[Q] Can I update Android version w/o AT&T service? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I just bought a used AT&T version of the HTX One X. I will eventually activate it with an AT&T MVNO but am not ready to do that now. The Android version is 4.0.4 and when I try to update it via wifi, I get a "no server found" which I assume it means no AT&T server. Is it possible to update the software OTA automatically or do I have to use the HTC sync manager and do it manually?

You can just use an RUU to update the phone. You can use the 3.18 RUU, which is Android 4.1 and Sense 4+. Or you can use the 5.18 RUU, which is Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5.
It's very important that we check a couple of things first though. First I need to see your bootloader details, to boot into the bootloader there are two methods.
With phone powered on
Hold the volume down button, then hold the power button (so you're holding both buttons together), the button lights will start to flash, they will stop flashing and the screen will go blank, after a couple of seconds let go of the power button but continue to hold the volume down button until you reach the white screen with text, this is your bootloader.
With phone powered off
Hold the volume down button, then hold the power button (so you're holding both buttons together), after a couple of seconds let go of the power button but continue to hold the volume down button until you reach the white screen with text, this is your bootloader.
Please post the first five lines.
The second thing I need to check is your CID. You will need to have adb & fastboot installed on your PC as well as HTC drivers (which are automatically installed when you install HTC Sync Manager. Once you have everything setup connect your phone to your PC in bootloader mode and issue this fastboot command:
Code:
fastboot oem readcid
Please post the results here. Do not under any circumstances rush ahead and run any RUU before I can check these things, if your phone is in a certain state the RUU will brick it.

No, s-off can only be obtained by deliberate action from the user. The OTA update doesn't work on a phone with SuperCID. You might not have SuperCID but we must make sure of that because s-on + SuperCID + jb RUU = brick.

I tried this and it said "waiting for device" but nothing happened. The phone is on the bootloader screen. I don't have a SIM installed since I am not ready to activate. Is that required to update the software?

Leave the HTC driver installed but uninstall HTC Sync then try again.

Does "My HTC" show up under the Android Devices node of the Device Manager tree while in the bootloader? They are listed alphabetically, so you should see it right on top, before Computer.
You will also need to get into Fastboot mode on the phone. If you're at the root bootloader menu that lists Fastboot/Recovery/Factory Reset/etc, you will need to highlight Fastboot with the volume rocker and select it using the power button. The Fastboot label should then change to Fastboot USB.

Yes, My HTC shows up in Device Manager.
My CID is CWS__001

Now you can just run the RUU. Don't relock your bootloader or anything, just connect your phone to your PC in f fastboot mode and run the RUU exe program through Windows. Make sure HTC Sync Manager is uninstalled, make sure no other programs are running, make sure screen saver and hibernation are turned off.

I'm having hard time to setting up adb to start.I've downloaded a recovery image.
There's nothing on top of PVT.
After some reading i worry thaat i'll screw it up if i flash the recovery without S-off and unlock bootloader.
I read somewhere that i could download a file from htcdev kernel section and flash but how to flash?i downloaded it.which program i should use to flash the file?
Get a newer RUU and flash. Check the CID and download the correct RUU for your CID.
And stop worrying so much, otherwise you won't fix anything. Flashing with different radio won't do a thing, as well as flashing a different RUU as long as you have goldcard. But since you don't have, just look for the correct RUU.
It seems like its hboot 98, just do the revolutionary ?
Sent from my HTC Desire S CoolDroid v6.0 via XDA Premium
Also a good solution. Just need to move to FASTBOOT screen.
Bluehawk, just go on with www.revolutionary.io , it will root and s-off the device. No need guide link, just open the web, and it will show you the guide, step by step, newb friendly. But remember to choose the right option, imei and sn.
By then, after complete revolutionary, be happy and fastboot flash any recovery image.
Kinda lucky situation, already hboot 98, easy to handle i think. Unless the device soft/hard bricked already.

Hye guys, first of all im amazed to see so many replies/solutions given by u guys.
Alright,i've do tried to s-off using revo but i couldn't get my device detected by revo, sigh.Tried many times but it still BLINKING ON WAITING FOR DEVICE.Tried on another pc,same result.I've installed all the driver and updated my device in device manager. On my phone,If enter vol-|power on hboot/connect usb/my device manager detects as ANDROID BOOTLOADER INTERFACE and when i entered fastboot it detects as MY HTC.I don't know where i'm doing it wrong.Or its some chip fkd up?
Now,i've installed adb/fastboot on my windows7 and adb seems not working but fastboot going good. Here's some info i've got while typing some commands:
Fastboot device - HTC14ctxxxxxx (simply typed it xx,security purpose?idk lol)
CIDNUM - HTC_621
Emmc should be Sandisk
Version-main 1.31.950.2
If possible i really wanted to S-off it so that i could flash custom recovery etc,not much hassle as official i guess. So yeah, revolutionary not detecting my device.Maybe i guess because the phone had not set to debugging etc or so prior it went dead?
So should i download a RUU and flash?which one should i go for with above cid?can i flash with fastboot command?which command should i use to locate a RUU?
Sorry guys,i'm new with android and htc.hope u guys could pardon my noobies.
Revolutionary might be running in ADB mode by default, and that's the reason it's not detecting your phone - you can't boot to the state when ADB is functional, ADB daemon starts running when the kernel is booted already. Since Revolutionary is an executable, it's not possible to manipulate it into starting directly in fastboot.
In that case, I guess, you're left with flashing the RUU.

My suggestion.
If you don't want to run into any problem try to make goldcard. It is easy. Use google search, and search for android gooldcard how to.
If you have a laptop, or cardreader it'll be a easy step.
Also before you run the RUU boot the device into fastboot. By volume down +poer button.
Don't worry.
I've messed my phone before and fix it without breaking it!
What you shouldn't do is pull out and rapid back in the battery while the phone stays at the white screen.
You can burn out the emmc chip that way.
[email protected] for the link buddy.I'll try it once i've prepared a goldcard, just incase.
[email protected] the midst of making a goldcard.Since i cant make goldcard on my phone,Tried readcid and goldcardhelper downloaded and plug my sd direct to laptop card reader but non working.I'll find someone who own an android phone and make golcard in their phone.
Appreciate you guys!Simply the best guiding forum!
UPDATE:
Got hold of a Samsung Galaxy SII,insert my 2gb unmount erase and did GoldCard Helper.I've got 2 CID as below:
mmc1:aaaa XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
mmc0:0001 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Which one should i use to create goldcard image?
Finally, the phone is up and running good!
I tried to make goldcard but not sure of the cid i should use to create image.
Went on to flash the RUU as per suggested by anaz and the phone came to life!I really appreciate everyone of you for the guide and advise.Thank you guys!

S-Off with no ROM installed?

Is it possible to get the phone back to S-Off when I have no ROM installed. The unrevoked-program is just "waiting for device".
I had my phone S-Off before, but had plans to return it to warranty so went back to S-On but without a ROM installed. So now I cant do anything with my phone, or is there a way to get a working ROM without making it S-OFF?

Super CID, then unlock bootloader through HTCDEV.com
SuperCID spoofs your CID so you can unlock from HTCDEV since AT&T phones cannot be unlocked by default, it tricks HTC into thinking it's not an AT&T Phone and allows you to unlock.
Once your bootloader is unlocked then you can flash recovery as you cannot write to the recovery with a Locked bootloader.
Make sense? Good. that being said, if you're not too sure what you're doing, why on earth do you want to root your phone?

Anytime friend. Hopefully I have not put you off to asking for help. It is in your best interest to read thoroughly before proceeding with any flashing. Also, now that you are super Cid' I suggest not RUUing until such a time that you are S-OFF. Good luck, have fun

Now you should make sure you are on TWRP 2.3.3.0. It will prevent future troubles.

[Q] Can't unlock my htc one x bootloader.

Hi,
I just got the HOX for at&t about a week ago, never thought about rooting OR unlocking the bootloader until recently when a friend borrowed my samsung galaxy s vibrant and asked if they could root it til they got their phone fixed. Got to thinking of how cool it would be if my one x was rooted, did the research on how to root it and hit a snag. I followed all the steps on HTCdev to the T, pasted my identifier token and hit submit and all i got was
"We're sorry, but it appears your attempt to unlock the bootloader on this device has failed. This could be caused by several factors including simple errors in the entry of the unlock token, problems with your device, or a lack of manufacturer support for the unlocking process. Please see the specific error code listed below, and try again if necessary.
Error Code: 160.
Error Reason: MID Not Allowed."
Anyone know wth is wrong? I haven't found another thread with the same problem as mine, too many to go through. would really like to experience the root benefits but this is killing me! =[
AT&T blocks the official method. What firmware are you on?
If you're on the latest firmware (3.18) you'll need to follow this method to unlock your bootloader.

I'm currently running on android version 4.0.3
Ok, you need to reboot to the bootloader and tell us what it says.
Hold the volume down button and the power button at the same time, the button lights will flash a bunch of times. When the screen goes blank let go of the power button but keep holding volume down. This will bring you to the bootloader.

He asks the guy that is still running 1.85.502.3, yet still locked.
Download the latest Android SDK with adb and download HTC Sync from the HTC website and it'll install the drivers. That SHOULD solve your problems.

What's wrong with asking if his drivers are up to date? A locked phone can still connect to a PC can it not.

No bad feelings just made me laugh. It was a statement about the op not you. Clearly updating things is not something the op actively does.

HTC One XL (AT&T) questions

Hi all. I'm kinda noob in this, and I would like to flash my current AT&T HTC One xl evita Android 4.0.3 to a newer and better version. I' ve had some troubles with the Bootloader unlocking, and I'm kinda confused on how should I do. I've tried the commands and installed drivers for the phone, but when I put the command I get the <xxx device>.
I also cannot determine wich Firmware I have (If it is under software information... i think i have 1.85.502.3 710RD)... Is this right?
I appreciate some help. I want to have my phone unlocked, rooted, S-Off and ready to flash roms.
Thank you!
To find out what firmware you're on I need to see your bootloader details. Power off your phone, once it's completely off hold the volume down button and then the power button so you're holding them together, after a few seconds let go of power but keep holding volume down until you reach the white screen with text, this is your bootloader, please post the first five lines.

Thank you for your responses. But before root, shouldn't I unlock my bootloader? How did you know I'm on 1.85?
On that particular firmware it's a bit different. You can gain root first using that method, then you need to get yourself SuperCID so you can unlock your bootloader at htcdev.
I can tell your firmware version by your hboot number and by the software number you mentioned earlier.

Ok, I'll try that and post my results later when I'm out of work. Thank you!
Hi. I just supposedly rooted the 1.85. Everything went fine, had some times of REALLY SLOW system between the command adb shell "echo 'ro.kernel.qemu=1' > /data/local.prop" and the end of the execution.
Is it ok that I have the same in my bootloader, buy just a line on top that says:
*** TAMPERED ***
*** LOCKED ***
EVITA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
... (then the same)
...
...
How should I proceed?
Thank you for your patience!
Cheers.
That tampered line is supposed to be there now, that means the process succeeded. Now you need SuperCID, try this:

Thank you very much. I'll try when I get home. Cheers!
Hi again. I cannot download the software from http://verified-download.com/file/0s98F8
Do you have it around by any chance?
EDIT: Ok got it from att_hox_prepare_rom.zip I had download some days ago...
Well, it now says unlocked so I guess it is ... How should I proceed? Am I ready to flash a rom?
OK so it says tampered and unlocked at the top of your bootloader now?
Sent from my Evita.
Yes, first tampered, then unlocked...
Cool. Now you can install a custom recovery. Download TWRP 2.6 from here. Put the file in your fastboot folder. Connect phone in fastboot mode, open command prompt from within fastboot folder, issue the following commands:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "filename.img"
(the exact filename, minus the talking marks)
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now you have TWRP recovery on your phone.

Ok, as soon as I get home I'll do. I'm not familiar with "Connect phone in fastboot mode"... What is that?
What rom would you consider if I want a non-much-tweaked one? I'm looking to go with KickDroid 4 or CyanogenMod 10.x... Wich would you choose? I want exlusively Sense 5...
Thank you again man!
To connect in fastboot mode you just boot into the bootloader and connect the USB cable, then it should say "fastboot USB" on the phone screen.
Asking which ROM is best/favourite/most stable/fastest/prettiest etc isn't allowed so I can't answer that question. It isn't allowed because to recommend one ROM over another infers that the other ROMs are inferior in some way, this isn't fair to the devs who spend their free time bringing us awesome roms free of charge.
If you want Sense 5 you'll need to look in the Android Development section. You'll also want to skip CM as that's an aosp ROM. Just have a look through the ROMs available and decide which one you think might suit you the best.
Sent from my Evita.
I cannot find the fastboot dir to copy the file... What am I missing?
It's wherever you have fastboot.exe and adb.exe located on your PC.
Sent from my Evita.
Ok done. So now I'm reeady to flash roms? What about S-ON and OFF?
