How To: Tether (VZW)

This is how I got my TP2 to tether with my laptop. (I have an unlimited data plan.)
The Internet Sharing app is 'hidden' in the /Windows folder. It's named "IntShrUI".
1. Go into your /Windows folder. (I sorted by name to help find it quicker)
2. Press and hold IntShrUI until the menu comes up. Select 'Copy'.
3. Navigate to your Start Menu/Programs folder.
4. Press and hold, then select 'Copy Shortcut'.
5. Rename it to whatever you'd like (I renamed it 'Internet Sharing')
It should now show up in your Programs. The only option available is USB, and I keep the Network Connection set to Verizon Wireless...not sure what the 'VZW Embedded GSM' option does. Connect your phone to the your laptop/desktop (make sure you have Activesync installed). Hit connect, wait about 5 seconds and you should be good to go. Again I have the unlimited data plan. This may work with the Sprint/T-Mo versions as well.
If anyone knows how to unlock the Bluetooth option instead of USB, please let me know...I know with my old LG Incite there was a Bluetooth option and it kept me from having to pull out my cord every time.

Does this make tethering available without paying for the tethering plan? I have the unlimited data/email 39.99 plan, but when I said I wanted to use it "with my computer to connect to the intnernet" they said it would be an extra 50 or 60 a month!
As an aside I've heard about software to turn your phone into a wireless router type hotspot? Does anyone know anything about this?

Not to hijack this but, is there a reason it's crippled? Once you've unlocked it, is there something else it can't do within the capability of the radios in it?

Oddly enough, my Internet Sharing was already there. Have ROM 1.18.605.12 with VZW

You want to be very careful with tethering this thing - I have been doing the tethering thing with VZW since my VX7000... Originally, they billed data by the minute, not the MB... They have since changed and with the new plans (the $29.99 Smartphone Data/Email and the $44.99 Wireless Sync or the $59.99 Broadband Connect - including Wireless Sync) they are monitoring data usage closely.
What you will first run into is the 'unlimited plan' has a ceiling of 5GB, which on a phone is tough to reach, but on a laptop, you can reach it pretty quickly. The second part is that VZW is very strict about data calls and will begin to throttle your data speeds if you exceed your bandwidth allowance.
The second part, is the browser you are using can be traced by their servers. If you log in directly - instead of using a program that masks your computer like PDANet - they will see that you are using IE or Chrome as your browser and begin tagging the extra $30 or $15 on to your account - or cancel your service completely.
Overall, there are many ways to get around paying for the tethering service, but they are all to be considered at your own risk type things. As far as the WiFi routing option, the GSM router hack doesn't seem to work correctly (at least not for me) yet...
That's just my 2 cents, and hopefully that helps a bit and eliminates some confusion.

I have the Sprint TP2, and was able to enable Bluetooth Dial Up Networking. This may work with the Verizon model as well.

If I remember correctly, step 4 was the one that allowed my PC to discover BT DUN service. The other steps were done to prevent carrier detection of tethering.

I have "Modem link" which appears to support USB or BT tethering. Standard VZW WM 6.5, ROM 3.04.605.3 11/17/09 RHOD500

Never mind: "Modem link" requires that you kick off VZW access manager. However, "IntShrUI" bypasses that requirement and tethers through USB but not bluetooth as you all already found out.

Ah ha! I knew there must be a way to get an internet connection on my laptop when my HD2 is just about out of battery power (often). Thanks Murphy, now I can use my laptop to power the HD2 and the HD2 to connect to the internet - Sweet!

Wifi Tethering using Fresh 1.0

My phone is rooted and I have flashed Fresh, but my cell phone plan does not allow for "phone as modem," even though I have the unlimited data plan. I don't want to change my plan and pay more money, but I can't very well ask Sprint if my hacked phone can still use tethering. So, I was curious. If using Fresh 1.0, can my phone still be used as a modem, or must I add the option to my plan in order to use it in that manner?

Yes it can be used for phone as a modem. I am not responsible for any charges you may incur though. That being said I tether and have been for the last couple years.

Yes you can, in fact I'm tethering wirelessly using Fresh 1.0 right now on my netbook sitting in a quiznos writing this post. Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Toasty.
We can also tether using USB from an ADB shell (which requires a bit to set up.)
Both of which don't show up to Sprint as far as I can tell, and I've been tethering on my sprint phones for a long time. Root in the Android case, vs registry fixes from a Windows Mobile standpoint are similar in my opinion. Root access allows you to turn on switches which effectively get around the Sprint error 67 messages that you'll receive by just trying to turn on Mobile Connection Sharing.
I can help explain further if necessary, but yes it can be done!

im tethering right now at home on my pc lol with fresh 1.0! and i work for sprint shhhh lol

its possible im doing it wrong, but when i open up wireless tether program that is included with fresh 1.0 i get a screen that says tap to tether, then i get a screen that says "su request" and it just sits there and istn able to be found by any of the devices i have running wireless internet.
what am i doing wrong?

Make sure you have USB debugging turned on. Settings < Applications < Development < USB Debugging. The SU request screen should have buttons asking if you allow or deny the SU request. If you don't see the buttons then usually usb debugging is turned off.

nope, no dice, usb debugging is back on, and still just takes me to that screen lemme try rebooting and see if that fixes it.
also, check your pm's
edit: ding ding! that fixed it!

The program goes through the motions but does nothing. I connect and press start tethering and then it asks to allow or deny, once I select accept it goes to a screen that shows 0kbs Up and 0kbs Down but I cant seem to connect to the web and it shows because there is no increase in upload or downloads. Is there something extra needed?

No, I don't see any exclamation points. It just goes through motions and has the option for you to stop the tethering as if I'm already connected.

After it has the "0k up" and "0k down" you need to connect your computer to the wifi network/device called "G1Tether" (by default.)
Once you do that you can get online no problem.

I would just like to clarify, to prevent ungodly fines. If I have an unlimited data plan (that is, if my plan includes unlimited in every category except for mobile to landline calling), but my unlimited data plan is not packaged with the "phone as a modem" services, I can still use it for wireless tethering from Fresh 1.0 without Sprint adding additional charges to my monthly bill cycle?
Those of you who do this attest that your plan does not carry the "phone as a modem" option?

yes, you can. sprint won't really know that you're tethering unless you incur some massive(and i mean MASSIVE, like many GBs) of usage. and they still shouldn't charge you or anything cause it is 'unlimited'.
so go ahead, tether. they just have the tethering option to get money, but its not illegal if you ahve the phone and find a way to tether it.

You mean, not illegal, other than that I rooted it and flashed a ROM onto it. Right? Any idea the average speed of this tethering thing? Can I tether with bluetooth rather than with USB?

i don't think rooting and installing custom ROMs is illegal either. i mean, thats like the point of Android being open source. so anybody can develop it and do what they want. there was also something about tethering not being illegal, like if you have the phone and a data plan and youf ound a way to tether with your phone, thats not illegal. i think thats an FCC rule or something.
the average speed is the speed of sprint's network, usually. but just test it out yourself. tether your computer and google speed test.

It's extremely obvious to providers if you are using your phone to tether. First of all, a mobile phone sends different packet headers than a desktop. Also, desktops are constantly making connections to places mobile phones don't, whether it be to a Microsoft update server, Starcraft II connecting to a game server, your automatic java or chrome updates, or itunes sending back your play count info to apple.
So the question is, how can we tether without leaving a single trace?
All I can think of to do would be to disable all connections with a firewall, and then only allow those connections which arent suspicious, such as a browser(of course the browser would also need a custom mobile identifier that matched your phones identifier).
Is there anything I'm not thinking of? Any other way the provider might figure out?
I use a Samsung Focus (windows phone 7) on att&t. I have no need for a pricey tethering plan because I only very infrequently and sporadically feel the need to tether just a few times a year. I understand that I'm probably okay if I only do it infrequently, but I would rather not find out for peace of mind's sake.

I was wondering this too. I went into AT&T today and asked if any Androids could tether without having a tethering plan (I'm looking for a new phone). Ask expected, I was told I needed to have a tethering plan to use tethering. Although, I did a little research and PdaNet apparently has the feature to "hide tether usage." It says so on their site, just google PdaNet. I would post a link, but I'm new and can't. Try it out and let me know if it works, I would but I don't currently have an Android.

[HOW-TO] Enable Wifi and USB Tethering on AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 with Android 4.3 MK2
After some research on various forums including this one, I got both Wifi and USB Tethering working on my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 with Android 4.3 (build MK2). Figure others may look for similar solutions so I put together the steps I used in this post.
1. Background
I have been tethering with SVTP (paid version) since acquiring the Galaxy S4 in June 2013, with my unlimited data plan. Then it stopped working after a week when AT&T pushed out the software update. Furious, I googled around and found the "Click the home button when the checking popup appears" trick, and had been happily tethering, until AT&T push another update (MK2) two weeks ago. It defeated that trick and none of the tethering apps work. Oh man, not again!
I googled again and found FoxFi. The wifi tethering didn't work (it only work on Verizon as reported(), but the USB and Bluetooth tethering do work. I am relived as I had a temporal solution. However, both the USB and Bluetooth tethering drop and resume the internet connection every minute. Very annoying when downloading a bigger file, or playing online games that require constant connection. Finally can't stand it anymore. I keep googling around and found there's no other solution except rooting the device. And I decide to take the risk and give it a shot.
2. Result
After following the steps, I was able to get all tethering apps works. Specifically all these works;
SVTP
ES File Manager
FoxFi
And, the native Tethering from the phone also work. This give me the hint that probably most, if not all, tethering apps should work.
Furthermore,the built-in USB tethering also work! Unlike the one from FoxFi, this one work continuously without dropping/resuming the connection every minute. This can be handy as you can charge your phone while tethering. Pretty cool, uh?
Last but not least, I disable the AT&T Software update, so I don't have to do this again
3. Steps
Here's the steps I used. I piece them together from various sources. Many thanks to the folks who put them together, and to the folks who tried before me and post the positive result. Basically you need do to a few things:
a. Root the device
b. Modify the tethering file
c. Turn on tethering and verify it works
d. Disable the AT&T Software update (Optional)
Please see the next post for details.

Steps
a. Root your device
Scary, isn't it? I was in the same boat and really hesitated to do it. However with no other option available it may worth a try. It does work well and give you good control of the phone. Worthy in my opinion, especially when it allows you to do what you want to do.

b2. Pay attention to the mount /system as RW mode step. It is missing in the original post:
"I was not able to rename files or copy until I change 'Mount R/W'.
To do this, you click on globe/phone on top left corner.
Scroll down to "Root Explorer" and hold for a second or two.
When you let go, a pop-up screen appears. Click on Mount R/W,
and change "/system" from OR to RW."

c. Verify tethering works
c1. Use your favorite tethering app, it should work. Just disregard the AT&T Popup (click OK).
And if you don't use any tethering app before, rest at ease. Your phone's native Wifi and USB tethering also work. That maybe the best part as you don't need to purchase any "unlocked" version of those apps. Just go to "Settings->More networks->Tethering and portable hotspot". Turn on Mobile Hotspot and you can use Wifi tethering as usual.
c2. Or while at the same screen, connect your phone to the laptop with a USB cable and enable "USB tethering". Your laptop will automatically install a USB driver and you will be connected to the internet via USB. This option works especially well when all you need is connect one laptop to the internet. It not only saves the battery of your phone by not using Wifi, but also charge your battery while tethering!
c3. Stil not enough? How about make your laptop a wifi hotspot? Follow the steps here:

This way, you charge your phone while tethering using USB, your laptop is on the web, and others can connect to the internet via the Wifi hotspot on your laptop. It is a win-win-win situation
d. Finally, if you don't want to be annoyed in the future and redo all these again (which may or may not work anymore as they may close the door), turn of AT&T Software update. Follow the steps here:
Stopping AT&T Auto Software Update
Download and install "App Quarantine ROOT/FREEZE" from Play Store.
Open the app and go to settings by tapping on the wrench icon at the top right of the screen.
Uncheck the "Hide system services" option.
Go back to the app and select "AT&T Software update".
Tap on the lock icon on the top right of the screen.
It may ask you to enable the USB debugging.

Just found this thread today, I've been planning on rooting my phone for some time now and tethering is one of the biggest reasons why.
I just wanted to confirm that this fix has allowed you to tether using the native tethering function in android with an unlimited (grandfathered) AT&T data plan and you haven't had any problems with AT&T harassing you about it. I'm in the same boat and don't want to lose my unlimited data as I've heard as happened to some people.

Yes, it works fine with the AT&T unlimited data plan.

Does Z4 support MHL?

All I’m finding is conflicting information, for both stock or rooted z4’s. I’m living where there is no available internet, except for my unlimited data plan, which has hotspot data capped at 15 gigs. That means, I can not use chromecast.
What I’d like to find out is if it’s possible via MHL cord, to mirror media to my tv. If it requires rooting, I’ll need some serious research time, but I’m not an idiot and can figure it out. At this point, I’d buy more hardware if that’s required. I dig the phone, but I really need something I can run kodi, Netflix or other stuff on, and mirror to my tv’s.

I guess another option might be if there was a way to get around the hotspot caps?

If you're able to edit your APNs, you could probably make the device route tethering through the data APN instead of the tethering APN
That's what I did with my Galaxy S6 and unfortunately you have to be rooted to do it (at least with Sprint, they disable APN editing so you have to find the database file and use a program to edit it)
However, your carrier might still be able to tell you're tethering and if they find out they won't be happy about it. I was lucky, and Sprint seemed to not care.
