Different screen mfrs/tecnology?? Polarized Sunglasses, 2 HTC One M8's test - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I remember seeing a post on polarized sungglasses about this but here is my first hand experience. I bought my "first" HTC One m8 on opening day. One thing I noticed is that with my polarized sunglasses I could not see the screen. And when I say that I couldn't see it I really mean it was almost black with my sunglasses on even with brightness all the way up. Only if I tilted my head certain angels could I slighyt see the screen. I figured no big deal, annoying but I've seen someone else comment about it on the forum so I figured it's normal on this phone or my brand of polarized lenses. Never had this issues with previous phones (Note 3, iPhone 5, Nexus 5) using these glasses but I dismissed it.
Then I had to exchange my phone because the speakers were crackling and just picked up my new HTC One M8. Now using the same glasses I can see the screen just fine, same as I was able to do on my previous iPhone 5.
Anyone else notice this? It's not unheard of that phone mfrs use different screen mfrs for the same phone.
Note: Both HTC One m8's were the Verizon version.

Was wondering about this too. Had a DNA that I could see clearly with sunglasses. I may try to exchange mine.

Same, 004

Looks like there are 2 different displays.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2705983

I have also 004 version.

I see some shift in color and a bit of shimmering when viewing the screen through polarized lenses, but it's still clearly readable at all angles. On the other hand, when viewing my laptop at severe angles the display is nearly black. Looks like I got lucky.

I have 004 as well....but what does that mean? The original thread didn't mention anything about hw versions...I did manage to copy my screen panel type from /proc/last_mesg/

I have T-Mobile HTC One m8 hardware version 0005 and I DO have the polarized sunglasses problem. Is this a manufacturing defect?

They probably just used a different, polarized glass when they built your batch. Polarization bends light. If you try to view polarized glass through polarized glasses, it won't work out so well. Aircraft instruments are made with polarized glass, that's why pilots can't wear polarized lenses. Next time you're at Wally-World, grab two pairs of polarized glasses, face them at each other and rotate one pair 90 degrees. It will be nearly impossible to see through them.

I'm curious to know what happens when someone who is having the issue turns the phone 90 degrees to landscape, can you see it then?

Seriously? Does what I was saying not make sense to you?
If you can't see the screen when wearing polarized lenses, it could be because the polarization lines are running perpendicular to one another, therefore blocking out all of the light. If you turn the phone 90 degrees, it would then align the polarization lines, allowing you to see the screen. Just like the post above mine explained with the sunglasses at Walmart, it would likely be the same thing, and show that the difference between the two hardware versions is just the direction of polarization in the glass.

I got what you were saying, but screen orientation makes no difference with my sunglasses - I actually use my phone in landscape as much as in portrait. Viewing angle makes much more difference with my sunglasses - head on, I see nothing, but turn a few degrees to the side and it's fine.

Screen protectors should fit better and not curl up on the edges.
How's the screen look, resolution, viewing angle, colors?
Any difference in how responsive it is?
Where was the phone made?
WTF, that's so strange. What's the build date on that?

Screen is solid and full of color from all viewing angles. It does NOT wash out at all.

It's been reported that some screen protectors curl up on the edges of the curved glass models. This one shouldn't have that problem which is a good thing.

How do we find out if we have curved glass? Only thing I can feel (can't see) is a slight curve up at the very top where the glass meets the ear speaker area.

Not sure if you are responding to my post, but to clarify, I am aware he doesn't have a permanent screen protector on there in those pics. It's just the temporary one that ships with the phone.
I was just saying that proper screen protectors can be installed that go all the way to the edge of the glass and not curl up on this flat screen, unlike the curved screen model. There have been several posts in other threads about this issue.

[Q]My screen is leaking a sticky clear fluid

I recently pulled out my tablet and noticed that it screen had cracked close to the top, an inch or two to the right of the camera down to where the volume rocker. The LCD screen itself seems fine but there is a weird fluid that is leaking out of one spot right at the top on the bezel. Its been happening for a few hours very slowly and I've yet to see any oddities with the LCD screen so I don't think its the fluid from the LCD screen, any ideas? I've searched everywhere and can't find anything.
I can live with the crack but would like to know if it's going to get worse/cause problems that might cost me more than replacing the screen. And if so is there any DIY way to make it a bit better
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

There should not be anything in your TF with liquid. Did you use your TF for some recreational pleasure?
Even the battery cells are solid.
My guess is the H2O from your Rubber Ducky battery level indicator. Or maybe the melting iceberg water from the Penguin. lol
There may be a layer of liquid in the LCD to improve transparency between layers. It shouldn't be leaking obviously so something is wrong.
Looks like many forgot what LCD stands for... it is Liquid Crystal Display, so it might be easily that when the bezel and the screen broke (mostly the screen, as it is directly attached to the display area, they are built together), it damaged the LCD crystal containers, and now that part leaks. Isn't there any weird artifacts on the screen, around the crack? Like dis-colorization, blind white spots, etc?

Are liquid crystals safe? Should you be touching them if it's them that are leaking?
Totally! It must be the LCD leaking. Defiantly don't touch it. If you think getting a splinter of glass out of your finger is hard just imagine a liquid splinter. It could work it's way into your blood steam and tear up your insides!

LCDs don't actually contain liquid. The word "liquid" refers to the physical properties of the crystals in the screen - they're "liquid" in that they can bend and twist smoothly to turn the pixels on and off. They won't leak out though.
I did some googling on leaky LCDs and only found a few actual stories of people claiming to have leaky screens. A few of them turned around and posted back that they'd found another culprit - leaving the laptop under a leaky ceiling for instance, so liquid later dribbled out around the screen. I'm going to guess someone spilled a liquid in your tablet, and it's dribbling back out when you hold it just right. Try removing the bezel (screws by the docking port, carefully pry it loose - there are threads about it) and I bet you find more liquid in there somewhere.

Screen Issue w/pics

so at the bottom of the screen while on lightly colored pages (settings menu), it looks like there are little flashlights shining out from behind the buttons. if you hold the phone straight up and down, and try to look "down" behind the buttons, you can really see the "flashlight" effect. they are uniform in size and protrude about 1mm or so up into the screen (very hard to notice but when looking for easy to see). let me reiterate that this is only noticeable on lighter colored pages, like the settings menu...and they are only at the bottom of the screen.
is this normal?!!!
I think I am being picky, as I do see this to some extent on other LCD screens but for some reason it just stood out more on this phone to me...

The One X is an LCD screen while the SII is an LED screen. What you are seeing is the backlights of the screen. Every screen tech has its pros/cons.
so essentially this is normal...I guess for piece of mind I will run to the store and check the display models to make sure mine isn't any "worse" than usual.

Of what? From OP's pics you can see the backlight visibly showing at the bottom of the display. I'm assuming it's more visible in person otherwise he wouldn't have posted. I don't see it on mine no matter what angle I'm viewing the phone at. If this was never an issue than I guess it doesn't really matter anyway.

worse case than mine i guess. i thought at first mine was like yours, even my camera was taking pictures like yours. but i can truly see it at a curtain angle, just barely. take your phone and slowly angle it, at about 30-40 degrees it mirrors off something and can be seen. i can't see it on black, but on white i can on max brightness, it seems to dissappear at about 80-85% or lower brightness.

Let me try again. On my phone, at every conceivable angle, in a dark room, on light and dark backgrounds, the backlight is not visible. And if I rotate the screen, it's not visible from the top either. OP on the other hand can clearly see the backlight showing through because he sees it with the naked eye and was able to photograph it.
There’s one other thing to consider. My phone has an Acer display. Quite a few people have posted they have Sony displays. If OP has a Sony display there’s a possibility that they all look like what OP posted.
Damn I want an acer display phone

From what folks on here have posted, the more recent "Zagg HD" versions of the Zagg protectors have much less orange peel effect. But I can't say personally, as I haven't tried them.
Bodyguardz and Skinomi typically have less orange peel than at least the "older" version Zagg, and are great protectors.
Some can't stand the orange peel effect, and one of the main reasons for not using a protector. But for many people, its not very noticeable (especially once the screen is on), particularly with the brands I've mentioned, and depending on the light.

Although for what it's worth, I picked up a Zagg HD sort of hastily (found some very very tiny scratches on my screen and panicked) and applied it. "Orange peel" is noticeable with the screen off if you're looking for it, but compared to the iPhone 4s/Galaxy S2 in the above photo, it's very minimal. Protector feels just like glass.
Also, I think I'll start calling it "lemon peel" to throw people off

So Zaggs, have the peel, I did not know that.
I can steer clear of them by a country mile.
For $20, I had guys in kiosk apply my ghost armor little less then a month ago now almost.
I like the fact if it comes off or gets destroyed, they slap another one for $5, as long as you have the original piece left, whether front or rear halves.

Is this normal?

Hi everyone, this has been bothering me for some time now, actually since the first time i turned on my device.
As you can see from the images below, the first screenshot is of my lockscreen. On the right side you can see a huge white distorted image. So i was wondering if this was normal. It looks as though someone sat on my screen and mashed all the colors out making the right side color look washed out. Actually the whole screen looks washed compared to the homescreen.
Then the second image is my actual homescreen and it appears normal, so what gives? I have never seen this before.

There are actual screenshots right, not pictures taken of the screen? If it was a hardware defect it wouldn't show up in screenshots because to the software it would seem as if the screen was fully black. I would guess it's part of the "water" effect.
Yes, they are screensots taken using the device. Images do seem lower quality in the water screen compared to the homescreen, so i guess its just supposed to be that way.

Well I don't see any white spots in the supplied images.
I see it. Odd. But i have to zoom in to see it. I also see gray diagonal lines separating with a space in between. Looks haunted though for sure
Mate, the whole screen has that pattern, it's just that there's a heap of white writing on the left to distract from it. Look again....
Okay good to know im not the only one.
Oh and btw what makes my tablet look haunted? I choose the wallpaper as a demonstration cause you can really see the white spots pop out

Same here. I saw some brown spots, but that was just tiny chocolate bits on my screen (I need to clean it BADLY...)
