[Q] What are the Roms tweaked for ART? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
As title says, What are the roms tweaked for ART?
I'm using this virtual machine from the first day i had my N5, but dunno how many (if there is any) roms have tweaks for it. Thank you

no such rom exists, nor are there any special ART tweaks.

OK, let me put it another way...it's a good question
Are the ROMs that don't do well with ART...or particular apps that should be avoided?
thanks,
p-d

There is, check the rom sources and for a bunch of roms, there is some improvement for ART (AOSP), take a look on Github...

None, not really, as far as I know, well avoid CM nightlies and CM based rom for example, they broke ART in the previous nightly... but it's a "nightly" issue , so in general fixed in the next builds...
Check the OP of each rom threads and the last pages for feedbacks, go for a stable build and you will not have ART issue.

also, there are the bionic patches(i forgot) that help improve performance while on art.

I don't speak about patches, I speak about ART improvement from source (what you stated there is not a rom with ART improvement, false there is a bunch of AOSP roms with a bunch of commits for ART, so with some improvements for sure, or I agree, without sometimes, but there is still some new stuff). Again take a look in the sources...
The Bionic patch helps also with Dalvik runtime. Here in this thread, we are not talking about Dalvik and Bionic patches.

Liscio or Pure White Roms
Both the Liscio and the Pure White ROM have great art support, meaning whatever apps are bundled with it and whatever mods they have are tested and confirmed working with art runtime. I'm personally using Pure White ROM right now , because the ui is all White no more traces of holo. I'm using the odexed version with trinity b10 kernel, latest adreno drivers, speaker/headset booster mod, SuperSU 1.94, the camera mod 1.5 w/mic fix, and everything is working flawlessly on art ! Cold boot in 13seconds
Great on battery life too thanks to it being mostly stock ROM, with trinity kernel, -100mv on all frequencies up too 2.49ghz

Paranoid android do not support ART but it is rock solid and stable running ART is really a matter of which rom suits your needs best

Thanks a lot! Two questions:
1-do you expect better battery life than cm11 or hypnotoad??
2-can it be dirty flashed over cm 10.2.1?
THANKS THANKS THANKS!!
Should have great battery life...better than cyanogenmod....I only recommend dirtly flashing for future updates of this ROM only...a dirty flash will more than likely carry bugs from prior ROMs over to this.. Also the source code for device used in this rom does differ from CyanogenMod and TeamApexQ's source. While its similar there is quite a few changes me and snuzzo have made to prevent future issues as well as better the performance. i know @falle21 is getting some very good battery life on this rom even with moderate use
Today I have 4hours of screen on and 9 without charging and still have 20%, better than CM and similar Hypnotoad

Very little was changed. I'm planning on keeping a weekly kernel build up with merges of cm-11. Any future ROMs these kernel packages should work OK on. This will at least bring somewhat of a good standard for roms also that are based off cm's hardware device tree.
Looking into bringing some official builds for ROMs as well. Just trying to bring up what seemed to be a dead legacy device, bringing some life to it.

I like this legacy device because it has a keyboard. If someone comes out with some new hard-keyboard phones again, I might move on. But until (unless?) that happens, I'm grateful that you and others are working to keep the apexqtmo alive.

awesome! i love carbon! awesome features. can't wait for exciting updates!
Just gave this a go out of intrigue.
Knowing nothing about Carbon, other then watching a youtube clip prior to install & trying for self.
Basically a CM with further customisation from what I gather.
Although this is not to my tastes, it's a nice rom.
Well done
Good job lads

whats your taste? i may build something along what youd like....aside from popular roms i do plan on building one of my very own eventually. Carbon is more its own thing really...whilst having a cm style and features plus a bunch more especially in interface tweaking and such it does have its differences. especially battery life and performance on this differs from straight cm due to not using a straight cm kernel

[ROM][OFFICIAL][NIGHTLIES]Vanir-AOSP | Optimization Level Legendary|

List all Questions and Off-Topic discussions here
Welcome to VanirAOSP. Our mission is to deliver a clean optimized version of Android to as many devices as possible. This is not a kang rom. You will find versions of the features you love that we've rewritten and improved on plus a few we wrote ourselves. we've tried to acheive a more organized and cohesive setup to improve the user experience while correcting any performance regressions and improving functionality.
If you're the kind of person that needs options to change the font and color on every letter and expect the ROM to end up looking like kid's cereal box then GTFO. You will not find customizations that are done just because someone figured out how to do them. Everything in here has a purpose and is held to a high standard of coding.
General features:
stock mode - ability revert to stock AOSP code with the exception of a few custom features we chose to keep active
enhanced performance.. longer uptime with less slowdown
custom written CRON and init.d.
minor UI and graphics improvements
custom navbar, navring, and hardware key features
active notifications (improved active display + lockscreen notifications)
usability improvements like power reboot menu and sound
animation control
Improved Vanir keyboard
CM's profiles & quicksettings
additional quicksetting tiles
immersive desktop <- fully configurable immersive mode
low profile mode
statusbar mods
clock & battery mods
lockscreen blur and other mods
soon to come -> quick cam and flash notifications
busybox, embedded root, init.d, cron etc
many improvements and new features unique to vanir
more to come when i feel like updating the op
issues:
- stop flashing the moto X binaries. they do not improve anything for you and aren't even for your device.
- open source camera and launcher3 do not have the same featuers as the google versions. use the latest

I flashed ROM yesterday and WiFi was broken and today I flashed only kernel (torched 4.8) and WiFi is working
I have to say, this ROM is very impressive! Great UI tweaks, very fast, ART works very well. The only bug I've noticed is my cell signal goes out completely for a few seconds every once in a while. Otherwise, very awesome indeed!

The latest nightly is pretty stable, been having no issues whatsoever, except the need to flash a new radio every few days or so, but that could just be due to my own location.

And also WiFi doesn't work on stock kernel. Only working with torched 4.8. I guess it's related to the latest changes with the WiFi. When I first flashed the ROM it didn't work so I flashed torched to fix it but I've had a lot of random reboots since 3-4 days so I just got back on stock kernel only to remember WiFi is broken.
Edit : still getting random reboot also on stock kernel. I'll try and grab a last_kmsg next time it happens.

Well that's odd, I don't get reboots at all. Maybe that's because of an app incorrectly allocating memory?

I haven't but I will as soon as possible. I didn't know there was a new built. I'm actually on 0819 I'll let you know
I installed the 0902 nightly via vanir updater and WiFi now works very well I still get random reboots though, here's the last_kmsg I grabbed while on 0819 nightly, i'll try to grab another one while on the latest as well.
Newest nightly refused to boot for me.. Just endlessly sat on the Vanir splash screen.
Vanir 4.4.4 build required
Hi,
I see that the last vanir build for evita for 4.4.4 was this vanir_evita_4.4.4.112414
But the official repo for vanir only hosts 5.0 builds. If somebody has it downloaded can you please send it to me.
Any help is much appreciated.
TIA!
I love AOSP ROMs but the latest nightlies that I've installed have crashed right after the boot. Please, look into that.
Thanks.

[Q] Give a second life to my Nexus S

Hi,
I decided to post my own topic and not in the CM11 thread, because this is probably not a CM11 issue. As you know, the Nexus S has only 512MB of RAM including video. Mine has been having quite a lot of slowdowns (apps refreshes/restarts) for the past weeks. I am wondering what I could do to help it and avoid buying a new phone (no money and I still love that phone).
However now, there are few things that I can't do anymore.
- I can't listen to BeyondPod (podcasts) and receive/send SMS in Hangout. There's not enough RAM to run both apps and even when I am listening to BeyondPod, the SMS alert might not trigger when a SMS is received. This happens in few apps here and there.
- Sometimes, someone calls me and the screen stays black so I can't answer. Again, this is due to RAM usage.
- I use SwiftKey as keyboard and it can't take 30-45 seconds to load in some apps such as Chrome.
I am running CM11 Nightlies. I usually update CM11 once per 2 weeks with the lastest Nightly available. I don't wipe the entire configs, I just upgrade. It's been a while since I've wiped everything to be honest. I probably updated CM10 to CM11 without wiping the configs. This might be one thing to try but I am not sure if it would help to regain some RAM/juice. I am running the stock kernel of CM11. I know there are few kernels with a bigmem patch, but does it really work ?
As for launcher, I am running Apex Launcher as well with SwipePad. Greenify runs in the background and hibernate pretty much every apps it can. I don't have the Greenify donation package, so it won't hibernate on the system apps.
I am wondering if wiping everything and installing a stable version of CM11 (or another lighter ROM?) would help. I would use TItanium Backup to reinstall the apps and their settings. I wouldn't use TiB to push the configs of the ROM if CM11 is reinstalled. Would a kernel or ROM with bigmem patch a good idea ?
This would probably be a temporary fix, because apps and ROMs are asking for more and more CPU/RAM these days.
Thanks for any input,
Neo.
A clean flash isn't a bad idea, just backup your rom first.. Backup your apps/ data on your SD with titanium backup and then you can just restore them.. You could try my stable v1.1 script and use Guru (CM kernel with bigmem) or Devil and you will notice the improvement.. Also the CM m9 is a very nice rom.. Happy flashing..

Before I receive your answer, I did some research on my side as well. It turns out that I have downloaded your ROM (the Farewell edition) and the cn.fyodor AOSP 4.4.3 ROM. I decided to go ahead and install the AOSP ROM instead of yours. I wanted to try AOSP instead of CM, being a CM user for the past 2-3 years. While I was satisfied with the AOSP ROM for the past day or 2, I am now unsure if I will keep it. While performances are good compared to what I was used to, I have some issues. The videos in YouTube are lagging like crazy (although videos in VLC work fine) and the audio stutter sometimes. I listen to a lot of music and each few minutes, it will stutter for a split second. I never had that issue with CM11. Also, I can't find a kernel with bigmem on AOSP. There is the marmite kernel from bedalus which seemed promising, but everyone is having FC with the Google Play Store and BLN/BLD isn't working anymore on this kernel.
How does your ROM compare with CM11 ? I know yours is CM based. Is there less "bloatwares" in yours ? CM install lots of stuff (themes, bugs reporting, etc) and I don't want that. I prefer to use the Xposed Framework instead of a ROM with multiple settings that I don't use. Having a CM based ROM would be nice to be able to flash the Guru kernel.

It basically is CM11, a little less bloated, but similar feature set.. Give it a try, you can always flash another rom if it doesn't suite you.. Slim 5.1 is another favorite of mine, if you'd like to try that one you'll need to search their thread as it wasn't a public release..

Your "Farewell edition" is Kitkat 4.4.4 or 4.4.2 ? So that I can download the appropriate Gapps. I also understand that the Gapps you provide in your thread are a minimal package, so my Nexus S doesn't run out of space (which happened to me few months ago due to the new official Gapps package).

[Q] CAF Patch and ART

I'm new to xda, so I couldn't ask in the dev forums... I been using Carbon rom, but they recently updated to a CM base for the rom, so w/o the CAF patch it doesn't support AOSP kernels nor ART cache. I tried their latest nightly w/ ART, it wasn't pretty; however, I did not try the caf patch, then aosp kernel, then art. In theory, should that combination get ART to work on a CM based rom? Or am I barking up the wrong tree on this one? I know it's a very specific question, but I been kinda bummed b/c I can't update the rom since I refuse to go back to dalvik, and CM don't support ART. Ever since they updated the rom (since 8/28.. they're on build 8/31 now), I been sticking with the 8/24 build! (their last AOSP based build) Any leads would be a big help. Thank you!
ART should work on a cm ROM. When they say they don't support it, they mean its a Google experimental feature so they cannot help you if you have problems with ART.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I tried it and it did not work well. Like I said many FC's, apps didn't work, and system shutdowns. Maybe it wasn't the fact that it was CM, but more so that they just switched to CM, and so the build is unstable still? But on the Dev forum for that rom, a lot of people are saying that the newest build works great with CAF patch and an AOSP kernel. That may be so, but it also may be so that they're using dalvik not ART. What I'm trying to clear up is, will that same patch make the rom play friendly with art also?

Well the CAF thread suggests this order: Clean flash of cm rom, flash the caf patch, then flash the desired aosp kernel. As far as art goes, aosp roms boot right up w/o problems in art. I don't know if that's because those roms are built on aosp from the ground up, or if it's because of the aosp kernel. I'm wondering if the cm rom that allows aosp kernels with the patch will also allow art to run smoothly. Again, I tried the new nightly (CM based) w/o the patch/ aosp kernel on art and it was buggy as all hell. Others are saying that the build is working well w/ caf patch and aosp kernel... but that still leaves the question: is that on dalvik only? If I turn on art with those three combined will art be good to go? I'm trying to see if anyone knows if it's purely a kernel thing that makes it compatible with art, before investing a ton of time with a clean flash, reinstalling all apps, and trying them one by one only to be disappointed by bugs and having to stick with the 8/24 build anyway. (that was their last aosp build for that rom)
ART works fine, either stock, aosp, or cm based. running aosp kernels on cm or cm kernels on aosp is a no no. you are asking for a long list of issues. and running the patch on an aosp kernel with cm does not guarantee that there wont be issues.

[Q] Can someone recommend a ROM please?

I have been running Paranoid Android 5.0.2 and keep having battery life issues. I have trimmed my apps down and even re-enabled the SystemUpdateService for the Google Play Framework which doesn't help. The service also keeps automatically being disabled. Another issue I have is lack of xPrivacy on this version in addition to various OS 'quirks'.
What is the recommended 5.1 ROM for this device that does work with the newer versions of xPosed/xPrivacy?

AFAIK all ROMs work with Xposed except TeamEOS (bootloop) and Temasek (you need a modified version of Xposed). Xprivacy works well now on 5.1.

Is there a recommended ROm that does not add much bloat to the stock OS? That is why I chose Paranoid to start with. It is not stock but yet doesn't add a bunch of unnessesary things.

CM, Terminus, OptiPop... but I didn't try all ROMs so you should read the OPs in Android Development and Original Android Development.

Let the users make their own decisions. Cataclysm is closed source and will never include themes. 2 points for which some users won't flash it

Not interested in Cyanogen anymore. No real reason other than they got a bit big.

While open source is a plus and is preferred I can sacrifice if enough people recommend it.
I cannot seem to find screenshots of either OptiPop or Terminus.

Try by yourself. Screenshots are useless as long as you know what are the main features. You can apply layers or themes (ROM related) if you want custom UIs.
