Just curious, I'm looking between the 2 Roms and loving different parts of them equally.
My biggest concern is when the updates come. Coming from Verizon, and locked bootloaders on my S4 and One, and lack of updates never caused me any of this concern.
If I decide to have CM11 nightlies or PA, will I be waiting for a stable version of, let's say, 5.0? And will I be stuck with buggy Roms? Or what would happen on either ROM with a large upgrade like that via OTA? I've never really had a stock experience coming from Verizon, and when I did on the GNex, there were never any real updates. Anyone whose had VZW feels my pain. So I wouldn't know what happens with a milestone upgrade like a newer version of android, or even 4.3 > 4.4 ...
Or would I be better off waiting on Stock and having the OTA via Google?

You will have to wait as long as it takes to merge the code and verify nothing is broken with the new code.
CM does nightlies and PA does weekly builds. Stay away from nightlies and stick to more stable versions if you don't want a possibility of a buggy build.
If a new version of Android comes out it will be merged with cm and PA and subsequently be in your hands as soon as possible.

So, for example, 5.0 comes out. I'm on CM11 M6, and CM releases a stable build of their 5.0 OS, will my phone upgrade to (CM12) or whatever it may be from CM11? Or will I have to flash it like a new ROM?

that entirely depends on what changes between versions.
there are many ways to prevent the need to reload all your apps and settings. titanium backup and helium are great options for being able to retain your data.
I cannot speak for CM, but at Paranoid Android we like to prevent the need for doing a full wipe upgrade, but sometimes it is just necessary.

Personally, I can't stand the UI of Titanium anymore. I have been using Helium for a while, but lately I've had so many issues restoring either from an SD Backup, after wiping my SD, or failing from a Cloud restore...
In a long story short, I am constantly going back and fourth between the 2 Roms. I love the simplicity and fluidity of PA, but love the customization of CM. I'm on CM at the moment, just flashed it from PA yesterday, I'm just curious if its really worth it to stick with a custom Rom, and lose out of the option of getting the newest OS, or do the Devs get their hand on the newest OS before its actually released to the masses, and usually taken care of beforehand...
Devs get the source code as soon as it is made public. Generally it is within a day or two of the ota rollout, and with the way ota rollouts happen, your favorite rom might have it before you receive the ota

Sorry if this is a dumb question I'm new to this but why are there two CM10 ROMs in the development forum? There is an "Official" build in the normal threads and an "Unofficial" one pinned at the top. Shouldn't the official one be pinned instead? What's the difference and is one better than the other? I'm just looking for the most stable/functioning JB rom.
Side note, is there a JB MIUI rom foe this phone?

No MIUI ROM yet. The "Unofficial" version was released before CM released theirs (and on my phone it never rebooted with it on phone calls like the official CM one does). The "Official" is the real deal from Cyanogenmod.
which is more stable? I am receiving my s3 Friday and plan on running cm10 asap.
I haven't had issues with either of them. However, there are things that I like in TW more, so before automatically going to CM10, I would recommend trying out the stock, or stock-like roms first.

I really do enjoy the stock that comes with the phone. I am not a huge fan of bare bones android I like skinned interfaces but I really do enjoy the speed and features that come with JB and Google Now.
I was running CM10 for while without issues, but when I upgraded to the latest nightly, it soft bricked.
So I've just been running a stock rooted flashable ROM nothing else. I want to have CM or a CM based ROM due to easy updating etc.. Anyway I'm ocd when it comes to what's on my phone I just don't want any bugs or issues.

Yes, CM and most other roms found in Android development forums are stable enough to be used as a daily driver. But obviously you will face fcs sometimes!
Why don't you try it out? If you're not happy with it, just restore the nandroid backup!
Don't use nightlies, use release candidates or releases those will be the most stable. I think the snapshot would be your best bet or read the CM thread and see what problems users are reporting if anything.

There are more ROMs besides CM. Those Devs work hard and don't want to be overlooked just because CM is the most well-known aftermarket ROM.
Depends how picky you are regarding stability/daily driver of a phone.
If you want to play it safe, just root phone and install Xposed + GravityBox.
If you want to explorer more capabilities, go with a stable build of CM.
However, from my past experience with CM/custom roms, it's really all random. I've had unstable experiences even on a stable CM build, and I've had fairly stable daily driver of a rom when using nightlies too. It's really all a gamble.
Always make backups.
But I will say from where you are coming at, I'd try the Xposed framework + GravityBox 1st before you attempt going CM.
I'm using CM11 snapshot M3 and it's working fine for me. No bugs so far. Give it a shot.

Thats what I'm currently doing... Lol. I only use the status bar signal colours and nothing else. I like stock with a little changes.

I too recommend gravity box, but give cm a shot, Just back up, play around with CM, if you don't like it just restore, good as new :good:
I'll be flashing the latest nightly right now, 3-5-14
I'm a little OCD myself, I dislike having all those Play Apps to be honest lol, :silly:
You can play it safe with multirom manager. Use it to keep your current rom and dual boot into other rom to test them out. That's what I'm doing.

I'm for GravityBox + stock honestly. Xposed gives me all the tweaks I really need.
IMO yes it is very stable. I've chosen to run PA purely because I love Pie. They are all very stable these days, only the ones which say that they are unstable are unstable.

Monthly, release candidates and releases are stable.
+1 to avoid nightlies w/out nandroid backup.
for example all of the nightlies sincd 03/01 breaking google dialer and voice+.
Why is the Cyanogen team putting more focus on CM11 unopposed to CM11s which is supposed to be their unique software for the Oneplus One? They even rolled out a Nexus-esque rom just yesterday.
This move doesn't make sense to me from a marketing standpoint. One would think the best way for them to go is to make sure CM11s is bug free and then focus on CM11 or whatever else.

there's only 1 phone that runs CM11S, where as almost every other phone has a build of CM11. There are even CM11 nightlies for the OPO if you would rather use that.
why would they focus all their efforts on one specific phone? THAT would not make good sense.
CM11S is meant to be a finished product. There will be stable finished builds in the future, but no nightlies.

From the Amount of bugs I can assure you that CM11s is far from finished.
I'm getting a better experience with CM11 + CM11S Apps. I'd recommend that.

I know it is meant to be a finished product, that's why I'm confused as to why they are still pushing the Nightlies so hard. Shouldn't CM11S be their main focus especially since this is their flagship?
Also isn't CM11 almost the same as CM11s except for subtle visual changes like the lock screen, etc? I would of thought that Cyanogen would of at least did CM11s nightlies.

nightlies are simply made available. they aren't pushing anything. the code base is compiled on a "nightly" schedule, and if anyone wants it they can go get it.

From what I've read the Nightlies are more stable than CM11s. What I would definitely want is the stability. There is too many bugs on the stock ROM but at the same time I don't want to have to flash a custom ROM to get stability.
I do understand that this phone isn't officially released yet so I am grateful for beta testing the software.

You should see cm11s updates no sooner than every two weeks and no later than ever month. Any sooner would be annoying.

It doesn't need to be certified by Google, its treated as a custom ROM and is not officially supported by the company. It has a separate gapps package to get Google Services/Play Store just like any other custom ROM.
Think of it as a 'reference rom' for other developers to get on the AOSP train if they choose to do so.

I do agree that CM11 nightly is much more stable than CM11s.
But I still like CM11 looks though. CM11s a bit weird for me.
OnePlus One will be getting a new version of CM11S very soon. And will get Android L one released also... why waste time on older versions? OP clearly has no business sense... There has already been one official OTA that fixed some things (nothing is broken on my OnePlus One, everything works great) There are also 4 or 5 official roms... flashing doesn't void warranty... so I'd say they're doing quite well actually.

I would like to know myself. I noticed there is a little bugs running cm.
I wouldn't say that there is a significant advantage from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4, the advantages are the newly cm code.
I say it would be worth updating to custom roms since they contain a lot of the fixes for the problems that you encounter on cm 11s that will be added in the next Ota. Ota will always take longer since they need to quality assure the stability and whatnot before it is sent out.
Some fixes but not limited to are:
- theme manager commits. No more force close when you go into wifi settings
- gestures being deactivated in your pocket (proximity sensor)
- fixes low in call volume
.... And more.

I prefer CM 11 over the other ROMs I have tried. Its all personal preference. It doesn't hurt to give other roms a try and find out wat u like.

Ok I'm lost. I've been reading around for the past few hours & I've been out of the loop for too long to make sense of this.
I have scrosler's [ROM][1/27/14] - Stock Rooted Knoxless - VRUCML1 - Android 4.3. I have the unlocked bootloader because I have TWRP installed (right?). I did NOT take the OTA to get to 4.3.
With baseband VRUCML1 can I jump to any other ROMS still? Or what should/shouldn't I be looking for?
I'm thinking of trying CM11 or SlimKat
If you can list the version then that would be great. If you do have TWRP installed, yes your bootloader is unlocked and you can flash any Touchwiz rom up to 4.3 or any AOSP rom.

I think you misinterpreted me. You can flash any AOSP rom that you want since you have TWRP installed. You're limited to 4.3 roms for Touchwiz. CM and SlimKat are ok.
Word of advice, if you're looking to use KitKat AOSP, the S3 has unified builds. One zip for multiple carriers. KitKat AOSP roms will be listed as "d2lte" when you search for recently updated downloads.

I have tried many ROMs and personally will suggest you to go with cm11 .
Slim is also cool but cm has good features and gets updated quickly as there is a Professional team working on it.
Where as on slim if some one ports or adds some more stuff then u will get update which won't be ota ( cm will have some ota update )
Cm is cool ASOP is also cool.

This is actually a question I've had for a while. What sorts of things have OTA updates on CM? Does CM update "OTA" often or rarely? I used CM years ago on my OG Droid, but they didn't have updates back then. I keep hearing there are some kinds of updates on CM, but I can never find out what this really means... can you elaborate for me, please?

It depends actually if the developers will fix and update your device ... its on luck ... for example if the developer has the device and he will update for himself. Also it depends on device if it is capable of running the new android , means the hardware capablitity .... You can install cm11 as they are fast in fixing stuff and if you have some problem , xda will help you as cm is common on xda...
I had used cm11 on galaxy tab 2 and it worked like charm ... i was update ( android version v4.4.4 where as on stock they use v4.2 ) f***ing nice.... thanks to xda and cm.... love you all....
