[Q] LGL9 (P76920H) Rooting - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
Mods may want to move this as I couldn't figure out where to start it.
Anyway, I have an LGL9 (P76920H) pre-paid from T-Mobile. I have the $80 unlimited everything plan. I want to be able to take all the bloatware out of the phone as I need more space (plus it'll speed it up a bit- it's slow/lags). I also, and mainly want to be able to tether my unlimited data for free. I am being told that rooting the device is my best option, but I have never done this before and am sorta scared. =/
After looking all through these forums (for 2-3 days), I see a lot of root options, but some say that it won't work on the "20H" version. So, is there any new rooting option/guide out there that will work 100% on this device and 20H version? Also, how do I back everything up before I do this just in case it fails? Please help me!
Thanks much,
Tasha (Peace77)

[Q] New Inspire User with Stupid Questions

Howdy, folks. Hope I can rely on your feedback regarding a few Inspire related questions, because your answers will determine whether I bring it back or not.
For the record, I'm experienced with HSPL, MAGLDR and have been flashing ROMs since my Kaiser. However, I’m new to Android and only have experience working with DL’s DesireZ on my HD2.
Account Questions:
I picked up an Inspire today for $50 on an upgrade with 2 year commitment. I’ve been off contract for better than three years, but in the process the rep at the AT&T store told me I’d lose my $15/month unlimited MEdiaNet option and they migrated me to a $15/month 200MB data plan. Though I have never yet used more than 200MB per month, I worry about what happens the one month I go over. I’ve seen reports from some users here that they were allowed/able to have their old plans grandfathered. What would you say my chances are of calling AT&T and telling them to restore my MN account and grandfather me? Who should I talk to, or am I just kidding myself?
Stock ROM Questions:
Ok, so no secrets that the AT&T stock ROM is full of crap, and have the following problems:
I can’t run Titanium Backup because the ROM isn’t rooted. I see a couple rooting options, but if you can recommend which option is best and why, that would be helpful.
Android Market shows AT&T apps, rather than 'my installed apps'. How do I fix that?
If I’m able to root and use my (licensed) copy of TiBu, can’t that remove some of the ROM stuff by using the ‘Chuck Norris’ mode? If so, is it possible to incorporate an application in the ROM in its place as long as it fits?
Is there a ROM out there that replicates (identically) the stock ROM but removes the branding and market app issues?
Flashing Questions:
I’m no stranger to HSPL and MAGLDR, having installed it on my HD2. But if I can’t find a ROM that works for me and decide to return the phone, how can I restore the handset to the factory state so I don’t get a raft of $hit from them or void my warranty if I need to send it in for service? In other words, for WM, all I need to do is to reflash a factory ROM from SD. Is there a similar deal here?

Well first of all welcome to the Inspire.
Well first of all I have rooted 4 inspires with the inspire hack kit. I think it is the best method. If you root there are many att stock rooted roms with all the bloat removed. There are also gingerbread sense roms ready to go. ATT wont even release these roms for another year. If you want your apps att dont list just put you phone in airplane mod and turn on wifi to get them. I use right at 2gb per month. If you are always on wifi you should be ok. I would start on the 2gb plan then downgrade if needed. I used 200mb in 4 days.
If you have other questions just send me a pm.
And on another note, I was on a $30/month MediaNET/unlimited messaging plan that was lost when they did the upgrade. I called and did a little *****ing and they opened a case with the department that has the ability to put it back on (which I think is BS, as others have said managers have put it back on the spot for them). But anyway, about 8 days later I got a text saying my case had been resolved. They put me on a $30 unlimited plan, and $20 unlimited text plan. So it's a little more pricey, but that wasn't what I was worried about, I wanted my unlimited data back.
I've had unlimited since way back in 2008, during my iPhone days. I didn't have to call and ***** and moan about it until they gave it back, they actually gave me the regular unlimited data that works with the inspire when I switched from iPhone to inspire. Will come in mighty handy due to my modded apn for hotspot capabilities. Anyway, the only way you could get unlimited data now is if you called in and asked. It would be $30/mth, no txts included. Hope I helped in a small way at least!
Welcome to the inspire forums!

Personally, through all the threads and videos on the web it seems to be a consensus that the hack kit is the most complete step by step process that yields consistent results. I researched with the youtube videos and even tried to use the GUI, but it failed to push the img to my phone, so I ended up using the hack kit anyway.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352
I'm not sure which gold-card method the hack kit currently uses, but it is most likely a good idea just to replace those first steps with the Gold Card Maker that nelify came up with.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970157
Aside from that, just follow the hack kit's steps to a standard s-off rooted stock ROM. From there, I recommend flashing any ROM that uses the inspire as a base (ClearDroid or TPC come to mind first, though I haven't used them).

You could get another version of the market app perhaps... but generally this is something that would change using almost any other ROM.

Yes, but depending on what you want to remove you may want to be careful.

Thanks for the feedback. I was able to successfully create a gold card and unlocked and flashed REMix 5.3, and am very happy with it.
I would like to understand a bit more about how to remove some of the built-in apps and replace them with another of my liking. Is there a guide for how to do that?

[Q] tethering and my htc and att?

Hello, can someone help me with something. I rooted my htc inspire a few months back. I did not change the room just left it as is. I am now trying to tethering my accer a500 to my htc inspire. I have tried the hot spot and also tried to hook cable to tablet from phone. when i try hot spot it turns on then turns off says i need to call att.
I am wondering do i have to flash phone with a differnet rom inorder to use those functions. or is their a way around the issue. Sorry for my lack of knowing lol. i am looking but I have not found a newbie guid covering this. I am asuming i do need to flash phone with custom rom but wanted to make sure.
update
I guess should of added more info. I have rooted my phone a long while back. I did not flash a custom Rom to my phone. I am running the Rom the phone came with just rooted. Thanks again for any help someone will be able to give. I am still reading the fourms just guess not understanding. From what I am getting if I want hot spot to work or tethering to work I need to flash my phone with a custom Rom.
a 30second search of putting 'free tether htc inspire' into google would have given you the answer you need. This has been asked over and over and over. You are technically breaching your agreement and if you get caught that is on you. Here is a link in the market for a simple to use app. Next time please search before making threads.

ok
Lol sorry but you really think I didn't do that like a month ago. Really I have read and re-read every topic even close to covering this topic. One topic saying yes you can the next saying it didn't work. Figured would find someone nice enough to say yes you can do it, and here is the topic area to look. Thank you for the link
Update, followed your link and it went no were. Google free tethering again and came up with the same thing. Someone saying they have a way to make it work. Then a bunch of posts after that with people saying it worked for a bit but not now. I'm just looking to see if it can be done, what has and has not worked and if I am right and I need a custom Rom.
I use EasyTether Pro, don't know if its safe, but I have been using it for almost 2 years on 2 different phones, and haven't been stuck with a higher bill yet

I tether my HP Touchpad about an hour a day and have never got hit with the email from AT&T.

thanks for the info
Was wondering do you guys use the cable, or set up a WiFi way. I don't plan on doing any downloading I use a program that looks up info for me on the net. Maybe some Facebook on the night ****. Once again thanks for the help with this very cool.
I dont have to DD an app to use hotspot because my dev built it in, which most roms do... but if you must stick with your stock rom... (thumbs down)
I used "open garden" wifi tether on a few different phones requiring that functionality. Its one of the best out there IMHO
P.S. If you like the stock feel and stability? of your stock rom, but are ready to open your phone up to a brand new life...
My suggestion for a jump off point(ROM) is 'COREDROID'! I dont rock it anymore, but it was imo the best, next very close runner up would be 'AndroidRevolution'...
Both of those have built in hotspot, plus a WAYYY faster UI than stock. Just My Opinion. good luck!
I have never tried to tether using stock rom, however almost all custom roms I have used have the ability to tether. Maybe try a custom rom, I like IceColdSandwich v 4.2. Good luck!
Thank u very much that was what I was really looking for. I will start looking for custom Rom that might work for me. I really need to learn how to back up the Rom I have so I can save it so I can flash it back to phone if need be. Thanks again all for all the help with this.
Start by looking for a recovery like "cwm recovery"... within the Inspire forums. Follow the directions exactly and read them ALL first, then reread them before flashing. Once youve achieved a recovery, you'll have opened yourself up to try ROMS i.e.Try coredroid for a few days then perform a backup of coredroid, then flash AR and run that for a few days.
As it seems in your OP, youre kinda used to a stock ROM and both of those are based on stock, with enhancements, and bloatware removed... MUCH FASTER and responsive.
So just start with one thing at a time - Recovery Time!!!
p.s. once youve installed your recovery, you should backup your current config before going to the next step - ROM!!! Practice good backup skills, and you'll limit your headaches considerably.
hello, thank you all for your replies. I am really wanting to move up to custom roms. Prob is I do not know how to back up my current rom, and how to check it to make sure its good. I am looking for the info and what app to use to get the best back up file. i want to be sure I know how to back up and also how to go back to the back up if need be before I move forward. If someone knows of a guide to do that stuff or has any good information could you pm me please. thanks a bunch for the help.

I used the EasyTether app a few times around last Christmas. Today I got the email from AT&T about tethering. So I guess now we can't use EasyTether?
I went to my local store yesterday and had a rep examine my phone to be sure there was no way I could tether. She noted it in my account. Today I got a txt msg saying I was tethering. So I called the 866 number in the msg and the phone rep told me they can now tell any time a computer or any other device is plugged into the phone and any time a tethering app is used. So according to her logic, we can't even use our computers to charge our phones.

no, she means they can detect the tethering. not the connection itself. u can still charge and xfer files and sync lol

*I* know that. But she apparently doesn't. She told me that ANY time ANYTHING is plugged into the phone now counts as tethering. Even if NO apps are being used. I know better than to believe that lol.

Sucks for EasyTether and PDANet users
This seems a good place to ask. Of course, the ref with whom I spoke claims that their system is flawless, but is there anyone here who kows AT&Ts systems that can speak as to the reliability of their inspection system?
The reason I ask, I was informed that "the data connection from your phone was opened to another device several times within the past 2 months." I used it once, I'm afraid that something looks like tethering to their system, and I'll end up with a more expensive capped plan rather than my unlimited plan (truth is that I've only gone over 3 GB once of which I'm aware, I just don't like the concept of caps.... or more cost).
I finaly put a custom rom on my phone and was able to hotspot and tether my phone to my laptop. Only used it to load one page of xda just to see if it worked or not. I never got a text meassage or phone call or anything. I also use a bunch of bandwidth on a daily bases. e-mail, web games and such. I had to re-lock my phone sending it to htc to get repaired, when i get it back it will be re rooted and custom rom and tethered again. Will let you know what happens then. lol
They will constantly improve the system. the more people that find ways around it the more they will invest in closing the holes. they didnt used to have the ability to see but more and more is pointing to packet inspection and TTL's on them to see if theres another device behind the phone. it's not just an apn setting anymore. it's best either to not tether and breach contract or just pay the $15 a month and use it. Getting around it now, could change next week or a month or tomorrow. companies will do what they can to protect their services from being taken advantage of, and with the number of users that are stealing tethering data, that is a considerable cost. do i think its fair that i need to pay $15 to connect my pc to phone for just a picture here and there, no, but the consumer always wants everything for free.

[Q] Why even unlock / boot load / roms for my GS3

Hey guys, just want to start off with an apology. I know these are stupid questions but I couldn't find an answer on the forums from searching that I could understand or that was made in the last 5 years. So here it goes.
I got a Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999) and like any new product it's stuffed full of garbage apps and bloatware. Well I want that all gone and I want full control of my device! I'm an electrical engineer, so I'm not an idiot I'm just not a software guy, so I need some very basic answers and I'll just google the rest I don't understand.
1. I know you can buy unlock codes and it lets me use other sim cards, I dont care about this, I'm keeping t-mobile for the next two years, not my choice. Does it do me any good otherwise?
2. I can install custom roms, I did this on my GS1 but it never worked out right and was really buggy. Is this the general idea of how it works? I want my phone to be as stable as possible and I want all its functionality.
3. The other apps you aren't supposed to have. I read an article in maximum PC about apps that aren't on the play store that let you under clock your CPU to get better battery life and make your phone more efficient. Do these exist, are they worth it?
4. WiFi tethering, I have T-mobile, and they want me to pay for tethering, this is bull****, if I don't go over my 2gb soft cap, then why should I be charged? If I unlock / boot load (what even is a boot load?!?!?) can I do that for free?
Thanks for the help, if you are kind enough to help me out, could you please not use short hand, I can't really google acronyms and expect an accurate result. Saves me and you time.

[Q] I'm a NOOB in NEED of Advise from the BEST! I feel I've come 2 the right spot...

Hey guys, I've heard y'all are the Best! I have a couple of DUMB QUESTIONS. I HAVEA VERIZON MOTOROLA DROID ULTRA RED. I WANT TO ROOT. IM SCARED, I DONT KNOW WHAT IM DOING. DONT WANT TO BRICK MY PHONE. HOW CAN I SAFELY DO IT? IM A SINGLE FATHER OF 2, MOM DIED TWO YRS AGO. THEY USE MY MOBILE WIFI FOR HOMEWORK, FUN, ETC. WITHOUT IT THEY HAVE NO WAY OF DOING THE THINGS THEY ENJOY. THEY HAVE VERY LITTLE. I BARELY CAN AFFORD IT ANYMORE. BILLS FROM THE CARRIER AR INSANE! I NEED TO ROOT, BUT IM SCARED. WHAT DO I DO? ALSO IF I DID ROOT AND HAD MY WIFI, WOULD I STILL NEED MY 7 GBS OF DATA I PAY A TON OF CASH FOR? WOULD I NEED IT? IM DUMB ABOUT THIS STUFF...PLEASE HELP
You should calm down a little bit, if you really want to root your phone you should search in the forums for a good tutorial, and make sure you do everything as it shows. And are you sure that you need to root your phone? you should really know why do you want to root your phone before rooting it.
Rooting is totally unnecessary, dont sweat it. there is some things you can only do with root, but if you are unsure if you should or not, and dont have a clear reason of why to root, then dont bother. its a risky proccess, and for someone who probably is not a power user, there is no real reason.
and your internet data, (and calls and texts) are the same even if you do root, you will not have any changes, since that is on the sim card, not the phone itself, so even if you root, nothing will happen to your gb.
Press Thanks if i helped!
Like all other's reply, I would also suggest you to keep calm and stay happy.
And about rooting your phone, Rooting isnt neccessary for you as you are handing it to your children the most, so just keep your phone as it is.
Good luck with your life. And again keep SMILING

Need advice on Samsung j7 perx j272p

Never rooted before, haven't run shell commands in years. Besides the point. I use this phone for a hotspot for my ps4. Boost is screwing me on data. 4 or maybe 5 days a month I can actually play online. Whole point of this root is only to bypass the data cap and throttling. I'm aware through searching and reading info that this phone has a lot of issues when it comes to root. Knox for one. Nougat 7.0 for two.
All I'm really looking for is a push in the right direction on a proven method for this phone that I can use to accomplish my only goal of hotspot cap bypass. I have used foxfi just fine for a long time, but that is now blocked and I get a force close of the app on connect and redirect to the boost mobile account payment page. I'm poor,if I could just throw money at more data I would. But I can't. I know some will try to discourage me and that's fine but this is going to happen one way or another. I would prefer for it to be the RIGHT way.
Also I know how stupid it is to root just for this one purpose really, but tbh I have a little meaningless miserable life and playing star trek online on my ps4 is kinda the only thing I have going for me. So thanks in advance for any guidance and help.
Sm-j727p boost
Boost now has the promo 60$ unlimited with 20 gigs of data hotspot..... I use to know how to hack my hotspot but the apn type is greyed out now.... the ##data## and edit... then enter your msl and I use to be able to add dun to the a on type and wala!!! Can't do it that way now... Look at my thread in questions and answers. I found really interesting files to edit my apns but nothing is working still. Please check my thread and see if we can figure this out... I found the files I think needed. Just need alil help. My son plays xbox live constantly so im constantly try to find out how to hack this hotspot again. It use to work..... but get that 60$ plan with 20 gigs of hotspot.
If you do root, I got a thread I made on how to get your MSL number. If you look at my profile and view my threads, you will find it.....
Thanks I will take a look at your thread for sure. Also I have the 60$ plan, but there are issues with the way they record usage? For example I just paid my bill less than a week ago and yet my phones hotspot has already been capped. By my count I have used 4-5 gigs. By theirs I'm at 19.9 gigs. There are just huge discrepancies between my records of usage and theirs. I understand that how my phone and how they record usage is not the same but it's just too big of a difference. So basically the last 2 months I've paid my bill only to have my service capped 2-3 days after.
Hotspot and editing APN FILES (APN.XML , APN-CONF.XML.....)
I understand I live alone without internet or CABLE. I use the xfinty to go account from a family member or use my phones hotspot. I'm limited on money and it sucks! Not worth the money when you also have a child on your own.... so it's hard. I had it working before and it was great if you read my thread on it. (If you root I can get you, your msl code to get into the ##data## menu and hit edit) any way I just wipe my PC and now have a working all took and adb and caseload back. Android studio and the best windows Rom kitchen finally back....
ASSAYYED KITCHEN V.182.... I developed a few thing and hope to edit this apn files to get a unlimited hotspot.... I been working on it along time now......
