Thank you forums, I love you! Anyone get caught by Sprint for tethering?
10GB+ a month and no complaints from Sprint. My phone is my primary source of internet.
sweet thats good, i was prob pushing 2 gB max and was getting worried about getting caught...
How do u know how many gbs your using? For example, how much is 10gbs? how many hours on the internet is that? Or does it even work like that. Just curious cuz im tethering now as of yesterday I finally got it working and LOVE IT but dont wanna get a suprising $1000 phone bill, lol.

You can just keep track of the MB count at the bottom of the screen of the tethering program.
Is that up or down?? Also this story makes me VERY nervous!!!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7141935.stm
also i think in your bill it states how much data is being used
Been tethering for a couple of years with no issue. I never could get internet sharing to work to WiFi router then ps3 though. for a while, I had Bluetooth modem. setup, so blackberry would auto connect when at the house. With WiFi tether though, BAMMM. I play socom with it, and watch Justin tv; its sick I tell you. Sick

Every website carries a different ammount of data, some websites are less than 1 MB or 1/1000 (ok, so 1/1024) of a GB. Some are far more than that especailly with animations and flash. Streaming Audio and Video eat up big chunks.
You can go into Device Self Maintenance on your phone and it has an option to show data usage. I think some ROM's remove it though. And I think that because my phone is the primary line I have options that my wife's hero doesn't. Bill pay and what not.
Then again, Fresh ROM 1.1 doesn't have it in there and I have no clue what to tell you to select to find it. You could also log into Sprint.com and look at your bill, it has current data usage.
I too am happy to see the 10GB+ post. I've been tethering for over a year, first with windows mobile, and now with wifi-tether. On windows mobile things always went slow most of the time, so I never passed up 5 gigs in a month. Now that I have the hero, I've been using it a lot more since it is my primary source of internet. It goes really fast and I love it. I'm happy that now I don't have to worry quite so much about the usage. I don't see myself hitting the 10gb mark any time soon.
WiFi tethering is uber cool
Hello, can someone help me with something. I rooted my htc inspire a few months back. I did not change the room just left it as is. I am now trying to tethering my accer a500 to my htc inspire. I have tried the hot spot and also tried to hook cable to tablet from phone. when i try hot spot it turns on then turns off says i need to call att.
I am wondering do i have to flash phone with a differnet rom inorder to use those functions. or is their a way around the issue. Sorry for my lack of knowing lol. i am looking but I have not found a newbie guid covering this. I am asuming i do need to flash phone with custom rom but wanted to make sure.
update
I guess should of added more info. I have rooted my phone a long while back. I did not flash a custom Rom to my phone. I am running the Rom the phone came with just rooted. Thanks again for any help someone will be able to give. I am still reading the fourms just guess not understanding. From what I am getting if I want hot spot to work or tethering to work I need to flash my phone with a custom Rom.
a 30second search of putting 'free tether htc inspire' into google would have given you the answer you need. This has been asked over and over and over. You are technically breaching your agreement and if you get caught that is on you. Here is a link in the market for a simple to use app. Next time please search before making threads.

ok
Lol sorry but you really think I didn't do that like a month ago. Really I have read and re-read every topic even close to covering this topic. One topic saying yes you can the next saying it didn't work. Figured would find someone nice enough to say yes you can do it, and here is the topic area to look. Thank you for the link
Update, followed your link and it went no were. Google free tethering again and came up with the same thing. Someone saying they have a way to make it work. Then a bunch of posts after that with people saying it worked for a bit but not now. I'm just looking to see if it can be done, what has and has not worked and if I am right and I need a custom Rom.
I use EasyTether Pro, don't know if its safe, but I have been using it for almost 2 years on 2 different phones, and haven't been stuck with a higher bill yet

thanks for the info
Was wondering do you guys use the cable, or set up a WiFi way. I don't plan on doing any downloading I use a program that looks up info for me on the net. Maybe some Facebook on the night ****. Once again thanks for the help with this very cool.
I dont have to DD an app to use hotspot because my dev built it in, which most roms do... but if you must stick with your stock rom... (thumbs down)
I used "open garden" wifi tether on a few different phones requiring that functionality. Its one of the best out there IMHO
P.S. If you like the stock feel and stability? of your stock rom, but are ready to open your phone up to a brand new life...
My suggestion for a jump off point(ROM) is 'COREDROID'! I dont rock it anymore, but it was imo the best, next very close runner up would be 'AndroidRevolution'...
Both of those have built in hotspot, plus a WAYYY faster UI than stock. Just My Opinion. good luck!
I have never tried to tether using stock rom, however almost all custom roms I have used have the ability to tether. Maybe try a custom rom, I like IceColdSandwich v 4.2. Good luck!
Thank u very much that was what I was really looking for. I will start looking for custom Rom that might work for me. I really need to learn how to back up the Rom I have so I can save it so I can flash it back to phone if need be. Thanks again all for all the help with this.
Start by looking for a recovery like "cwm recovery"... within the Inspire forums. Follow the directions exactly and read them ALL first, then reread them before flashing. Once youve achieved a recovery, you'll have opened yourself up to try ROMS i.e.Try coredroid for a few days then perform a backup of coredroid, then flash AR and run that for a few days.
As it seems in your OP, youre kinda used to a stock ROM and both of those are based on stock, with enhancements, and bloatware removed... MUCH FASTER and responsive.
So just start with one thing at a time - Recovery Time!!!
p.s. once youve installed your recovery, you should backup your current config before going to the next step - ROM!!! Practice good backup skills, and you'll limit your headaches considerably.
hello, thank you all for your replies. I am really wanting to move up to custom roms. Prob is I do not know how to back up my current rom, and how to check it to make sure its good. I am looking for the info and what app to use to get the best back up file. i want to be sure I know how to back up and also how to go back to the back up if need be before I move forward. If someone knows of a guide to do that stuff or has any good information could you pm me please. thanks a bunch for the help.

I used the EasyTether app a few times around last Christmas. Today I got the email from AT&T about tethering. So I guess now we can't use EasyTether?
I went to my local store yesterday and had a rep examine my phone to be sure there was no way I could tether. She noted it in my account. Today I got a txt msg saying I was tethering. So I called the 866 number in the msg and the phone rep told me they can now tell any time a computer or any other device is plugged into the phone and any time a tethering app is used. So according to her logic, we can't even use our computers to charge our phones.

no, she means they can detect the tethering. not the connection itself. u can still charge and xfer files and sync lol

*I* know that. But she apparently doesn't. She told me that ANY time ANYTHING is plugged into the phone now counts as tethering. Even if NO apps are being used. I know better than to believe that lol.

Sucks for EasyTether and PDANet users
This seems a good place to ask. Of course, the ref with whom I spoke claims that their system is flawless, but is there anyone here who kows AT&Ts systems that can speak as to the reliability of their inspection system?
The reason I ask, I was informed that "the data connection from your phone was opened to another device several times within the past 2 months." I used it once, I'm afraid that something looks like tethering to their system, and I'll end up with a more expensive capped plan rather than my unlimited plan (truth is that I've only gone over 3 GB once of which I'm aware, I just don't like the concept of caps.... or more cost).
I finaly put a custom rom on my phone and was able to hotspot and tether my phone to my laptop. Only used it to load one page of xda just to see if it worked or not. I never got a text meassage or phone call or anything. I also use a bunch of bandwidth on a daily bases. e-mail, web games and such. I had to re-lock my phone sending it to htc to get repaired, when i get it back it will be re rooted and custom rom and tethered again. Will let you know what happens then. lol
They will constantly improve the system. the more people that find ways around it the more they will invest in closing the holes. they didnt used to have the ability to see but more and more is pointing to packet inspection and TTL's on them to see if theres another device behind the phone. it's not just an apn setting anymore. it's best either to not tether and breach contract or just pay the $15 a month and use it. Getting around it now, could change next week or a month or tomorrow. companies will do what they can to protect their services from being taken advantage of, and with the number of users that are stealing tethering data, that is a considerable cost. do i think its fair that i need to pay $15 to connect my pc to phone for just a picture here and there, no, but the consumer always wants everything for free.
So I got my letter from ATT the other day saying that they have detected tethering software on my phone and that if I dont remove it by 12/31/12 they will automatically bump me up to the 5GB tethering plan for $50/mo
Whats the best way to resolve this and still be able to run custom roms? Ideally I would still like to be able to tether for free (obviously) but at the very least just be able to not pay the $50/mo and still run custom roms.
I spoke with a customer service rep and told her I had no idea how to tether and asked if they could just put a block on it or something, and she said no, the software has been detected and it has to be removed.
Maybe I should call back and ask for supervisor?
Alternatively she said if I go into the att store and they can look at my phone and see that there is no tethering software, they can make a notation on my account.
So I suppose I could unroot, go into att store, have them note the account, and then root again.... that would probly be my last resort.
Thanks in advance for any help!
No, you do understand the second you tether they can detect it right? They also aren't idiots and can tell if you're running a custom ROM as well
I've heard about Verizon reps commenting about custom ROMs before
So you flashing back to stock and showing them there's nothing on the phone does nothing.
If you don't want to be charged then stop
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk 2
I disagree, because if they make a notation on the account and they have proven that they can't find any programs or software to remove when I bring the phone into the store, then there is no way they can charge me.
But even if I didnt want to tether (which I have not tethered in quite a while and still got the letter) it would see to me that they are detecting the software (rom) and seeing that I have the ability to tether, so how do I run a custom rom (and not tether) and still not get charged?

They wouldn't make a notation on the account because tethering is possible with the stock software, there's quite a few apps on the market that allow this. So you could just uninstall it.
You didn't get the letter because of the custom ROM, you got it because you violated your contract by tethering. It may have taken them some time to send out the letter.
They have detected it so they will be watching for future violations
So my suggestion stays the same, stop tethering or pay for it
Pretty simple

What Phil said although you may not agree with att's rules on tethering...its in the contact and you signed to it so you will get taken off your plan and to the 5gb plan if you continue
Gotcha, thanks for the input guys.
I am fairly new to ATT (came from Sprint)
Does this apply to wired tethering as well? Does someone using wired tether (such as pdanet) still have to pay, or is that free?
The way I think they catch people is # of hops it does to terminate data and packet sniffers so I'd just stay away even though pda may be a bit safer will LTE around theyre hunkering up
For the sake of mentioning this--its a topic which has been raked over in every phone forum, Android, Apple etc nd tablets too.
Doing a general and specific search on the Net seems to point to mostly theory. When I owned my previous iPhones and jailbroke, I used MyWi. However, the devs made it clear you could be caught.
That notion aside-many of us and this includes me, believe it comes down to being abusive with the tethering. Of course many would disagree but if you cared to specifically search iPhone sites and focused mostly on AT&T, it somewhat became clear they knew we were tethering since algorithms change when tethering. In conjunction, we also surmised they went after people who had unlimited data plans and really used the heck out of it.
I personally have tethered many times and many people I know too but we didn't use it too long. I've never gotten a notice from ATT but it doesn't mean they aren't watching. Not be be a jerk but your op is a topic I've seen literally hundreds of times. Everyone claims the same thing but no one seems to admit they abuse it. They noticed you for a reason is what it comes down to. I should also mention I've tethered my HOX as well.
In my personal opinion I believe we should be able to get a free amount of gigabytes to tether. Once over it, then you get charged. This is just a real touchy subject.
These are just my opinions.
Jon

I tethered without a tethering plan for years, first on my jailbroken iPhone and then on my HOX until I switched to the Mobile Share plans that include tethering. I never got caught, but I was also very careful not to abuse it by, for example, streaming video, moving large files, or doing things that a phone would never do untethered like updating my laptop's software.
I am convinced, from watching this issue over the years, that AT&T does two things: They mainly go after the data hogs, flagging people for tethering detection when they get close to or over their data caps; they also run spot checks on random accounts. Detecting tethering, should you get their attention, is dead simple, by the way. There are any number of ways to confirm it.
Once you're on their radar screen, the jig is up. Your only choices are to stop tethering or get a tethering plan.
hello everyone. i did a search and could not find anything in here and in google. i have been tethering via wifi for a fews months now. reaching about 100 gigs a month. today i was doing the same thing i always do, get home from work and get online using my phones wifi. i rooted my phone and have been using the stock rom but with the tethering. i used sqlite editor to add the "tether_dun_required" and it worked for a few months. till today. is there something wrong, did tmobile somehow find me out. i need help. any help would be greatly appreciated. and i have lollipop 5.0 it has been asking me to update but i dont want to lose the root. i used nexus root tool kit to do the root. please and thanks guys.

I'm assuming you are using Google Chrome? I am using this setup currently and I'm receiving desktop requests for every site I visit, nothing looks like a mobile version of a site at all.
* Download User-Agent Switcher For Chrome
* Select SAFARI -> Mac Safari 7
* Surf as usual.
Let me know. I'm using this setup as we speak and it looks like normal. Please be specific in your response.

I'm on T-Mobile too. T-Mobile starts looking for accounts that have an unusually high amount of traffic. They look at the user-agent, and if its a known desktop one, it'll auto-route to the upsell page. So to get around it, using a user-agent not on the t-mobile upsell routing list will allow you to continue as normal.
Proof of this, my cycle reset, I removed the user agent, and I was fine until I hit about 45gb in two days, then I got the upsell again. Kicked the user-agent back in gear (Safari -> Mac Safari 7) and I can tether as usual.
Even though we have tether_dun_required set to 0 making it look like traffic is coming from our phone, there is a "conflict of interest" what is being reported vs user-agent being used.
Hope that makes sense.

yes it does make sense. so putting a custom rom on my phone wont do any good will it? a friend of mine told me i should just put a custom rom and it SHOULD fix it. but what you are telling me makes sense. i just wish this wasnt the case. and what do you mena by CYCLE-RESET. also, i tried this on internet explorer and it gave me the upsell page.

New cycle in terms of my billing period for t-mobile (when they capture amount of data used, minutes, and texts). Yeah, IE is flagged as desktop browser, you'll get an upsell page for sure. Doesn't matter if you have a custom rom or rooted. At the end of the day, unless you use VPN to encryt the data transferred, simply looking at the user-agent of your browser is enough to trigger the upsell. Did Safari work for you and are you seeing the sites as usual?

Tmobile should give serious abusers the boot
100gb??? Jesus. I'm sorry to say but it is users like you that make carriers want to keep our phones locked down. There is nothing wrong with tethering when in a pinch, and maybe using <5gb of data /month but 100gb is just outright abuse. If you are using your phone as your primary data connection, then you should be paying for a tethering plan.

100g for one month. All the other months I use <4gb. Relax.
So I am running a HTC phone and have made some mistakes. I have been trying to change my NAT type on x bone in order to play Rainbow six online with open NAT.
I tried tether to laptop then to box using a cross over cable and forwarding ports over Internet connection sharing. I also tried installing multiple port forwarder applications onto my phone and tethering directly to the XB. One app was meant for a rooted phone (port forward ultimate), which mine isn't and it would let me stop the process before uninstalling.
Unfortunately for me it didn't work and now the tethering speed is INSANELY slow. It tells me there is an MTU error (1340) and the games which used to work fine are now completely unplayable. I wish I had never done all of it just to play one game as the others worked fine.
I am really upset, because the bit of internet I get to play video game is barely keeping my alive at the moment and now its gone.
If you have any advice you would be helping a very ill man get a little bit of joy.
Thanks
Does anyone know anywhere in the UK where I can speak to a professional about my issue. I never get responses on this forum. Any other forums where professionals dwell and give advice/help?
Nobody has the knowledge to help at all?
Can't bring myself to believe that no one has any knowledge of what to do in this situation.
I will pay for someone to help me if that's what it takes to get someone to respond here.
So...If your Phone isn't rooted, you can try (if you have one) to recover all the information. If the Phone has a Guarantee, go to the shop where you buyed it. Since it isn't rooted the Guarantee is still on it. If all of that isn't an Option, the easiest way is to root the Phone (totally worth it anyway) and try an equal App. Not the same just onenwith the same function. Write back if none of these helps, and give some more Information about your mobile (S/N number Android Version...)

Its nothing to do with being rooted or not, my ISP is throttling my tethering somehow and I don't know how or why they are doing it. It worked fine for months, but I tried opening my NAT. It think they are doing something with my IP, subnet mask or MTU, but I don't know how to get around it. Other than rooting and applying tether dun 0, which I would prefer not to do, I am at a loss
Correction, I do know why they are doing it, it's because I tried opening my NAT, which is not allowed. The latency in games has quadrupled. 4g was perfect before, now its barely playable. I want to know why this is happening. Can mobile providers throttle tethering? It still works just very badly.
So, you live in the UK. So you think it's a problem with the provider. Wich provider is it?
It's either my mobile provider or the only other thing I can think of is that I dropped my phone a few weeks back.
Could dropping your phone cause the wifihotspot to work incorrectly? Surely if it was broken it would just work or not work.
I get very decent speeds on my phone but when so tether my speeds are awful, which never used to happen.
I am trying to rule out various possiblities and although I am alright at tech, I don't know much about mobiles and though there were a few knowledgeable people on this forum.
.
I am going to see a professional. I didn't realise it was all amateurs here, my mistake.
