[Q] Can I get a N5 GSM from Google Play? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm outside the US so I don't have access to the Google Play store to look at a Nexus 5. Can I buy a GSM version directly from Google Play? Or am I going to have to spend an extra 50 bucks to get it from Amazon?
Thanks a bunch!

A GSM Version? Both are GSM:
North America:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41
Rest of World:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

Cool! So that means I can't even get a CDMA version? That makes things easier, cause my sister in law is buying it.
Whenever I try to access Nexus 5 in Google Play I'm taken to a page that says it isn't available in my country.
Thanks!

Nope. The CDMA version is only available for North Americans.
I didn't see that you are living in Brazil... Unfortunately the Nexus 5 is only available in the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, India, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States.
You have to buy it through Amazon.

Actually that's the point... my sister in law is buying it in the US. I'm trying to figure out whether she can get the GSM version from Google Play... I can't look at it myself because it's not available here. I'd ask her to look at it but I'm not sure she'd know where to look (since I wouldn't).

If she is in the US she can only buy the US version. Google Play Store detects your IP to show up the products matching with your localization.
Anyway if you want to use a Nexus 5 in Brazil you need the D821 version so don't buy the device through an US IP address.

I'm not sure I follow. Can you not get a Nexus 5 to use with AT&T? AFAIK AT&T uses 850/1900 frequencies for 3G, which is the same as my operator here. I'm not sure about 4G but I'm not really worried about that. Other than that, as long as it's GSM you just snap in your microSIM and you're good, isn't it?

The difference between the the d820 and d821 is simply which LTE (4g) bands they operate on. That's the only difference.
If you're never using 4g on this phone, either will work fine
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

So, to sum it all up:
- Every Nexus 5 is GSM and those sold in the US are both GSM (micro SIM) and CDMA capable;
- The US version (D820) supports different LTE bands than the international version (D821).
There's a chance Brazil will start using Band 17 (700mhz) some time soon. In that case the Nexus 5 US (D820) would be LTE-capable here.
Otherwise, both versions will work with 2 and 3G anywhere.
Any mistakes there?

[Q] Import Nexus S from USA to Europe (Austria)

Hi XDA Community!
I want to import a Nexus S from the States as soon as it is available there. As I am not totally sure if there can be problems using it in Austria, Europe, I would ask for your expertise.
I will buy the unbranded version without simlock from Best Buy.
Will GSM and UMTS work with the European frequencies?
Is the German language natively supported? I mean all the automatic word completing of the screen keyboard.
I do not care about the power plug, as I can recharge it using USB.
As for the HTC Hero there were two versions, one for Europe one for the States, I am afraid that I can run into problems with the Nexus S.
Thanks for your help,
Burt

I would also like to know about the frequencies as I will be studying abroad in Salzburg next semester and hope to bring this with me. I would assume you could look at what frequencies your carrier operates at in Austria and compare those to what the NS supports, but someone more knowledgeable on this should probably chime in.
I know German is natively supported with dictionary and word completion (at least in 2.2), I use it all the time. I couldn't imagine them removing this in 2.3. In fact I think they added MORE language support, I think it's pretty unlikely they would remove functionality for a language like German.
As for the power plug, couldn't you just use an adapter?

For GSM I am pretty sure there are no problems, we have 900 and 1800 MHz in Austria, depending on the operator.
With UMTS (HSPA) I am a bit suspicious. I "assume" that we use 2100 MHz here, but the network operators seem to make a secret of the frequency.
Burt
That's funny. I've never heard of carrier keeping freq. a secret...

Would be great if you could post your experiences using the phone in Germany. Also about the German spell checker and language support. In Austria it will exactly match I suppose.

Buy nexus 5 from us and use it in Europe?

Hi
I'm thinking of buying the nexus 5, tho it has not arrived to my country yet and my resellers will put on a 100-200$ extra as they did with the nexus 4, so if I order one from Google play store (the unlocked one)(will order it through a post forwarding company) will it work in EU?
I have my doubts because I read a review that said " Network compatibility
Google has made two versions of the handset, one specifically for North America/Asia, and another for other regions like Europe."
Thanks in advance
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I am also interested in this. Hope there is just one version that is compatible worldwide.
Thank you in anticipation to whoever can clarify this.
You can actually use the US model in Europe without problem, but you can't use LTE because the LTE bands supported in this US(& Canada) model are mostly not compatible in Europe & Asia.
The specs in the N5 page has clearly stated the different lte bands support.
North America:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41
Rest of World:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

Buy from Play Store in Malta
Malta is not yet a supported country for the Play Store. Can anyone suggest a way to get the new Nexus 5?
Through the US play store it is way cheaper.
I've used the N4 US model in EU without an issue, so the N5 should be no different.

Borderlinx will calculate the import taxes in your country. when paying Borderlinx for the shipping, you will also be paying the taxes to them. tey will pay the taxes to your customs. Therefore DHL will directly deliver to you without delay at the customs.

Exactly the dilemma I'm having right now.
3G and 3,5G is quite fast in Europe. I'm getting 4-6 megs on 3,5G which is enough for me.
Heavy data usage costs more so I use WiFi for it anyway. In my case I'd buy one from US.
Considering LTE as a still early dev. technology in my part of the world I'm even more convinced.
I just bought a US version for use in Europe

does anyone know whether buying the n5 from a country you don't reside in will affect warranty? I'm assuming warranty is only covered by the country that the device is issued for...
If LG policy is still the same then you will have to send it to the country where you bought it. The question is: will they ship it back directly to your country...

The US version just has some extra frequency bands for T-Mobile. They mostly operate on a different band in the US than they do in other countries. If you're not using US T-Mobile, there's really no reason to buy the US version. The Global version will work a little more reliably for you.

The global version will likely work a *lot* more reliably for you if you're outside the United States. The U.S. version doesn't add extra frequencies, it trades those frequencies for other frequencies. So the U.S. version cannot work on certain frequencies that the global version can, and vice-versa. (The U.S. version cannot do HSPA on 900MHz while the global one can, and the U.S. version doesn't support networks that use 2100MHz for the downlink and 1900 for the uplink...its 2100MHz support is limited to AWS downlink.) This means that the U.S. version will, in a large percentage of countries, be limited to using EDGE networks. It really is too bad that Motorola couldn't manage to make a single model that covers all of these bands...
My impression is that there are very few carriers worldwide that operate on band 4/AWS-1. T-Mobile U.S. is probably the largest one, and even they are actually in the process of refarming their spectrum. My understanding is that they are turning down some 850MHz 2G transmitters, moving some HSPA+ over to that spectrum and some to 1900/2100 (band 1), and then re-using their AWS-1 spectrum for LTE. Once that happens, even the global version of the Moto G will work fine on T-Mobile. The global version already works on AT&T, and if you are in a metro area where T-Mobile has already completed the spectrum shuffle, the global version will work for you, too (and allow you to use your phone on HSPA networks if you ever travel outside of the country!). So for many people in the U.S., I would argue that the global version might actually make more sense, especially looking forward.

the US version will only have internet with Claro bc it has hspa 850mhz while its missing 900mhz in hspa (orange internet)

The united states version and the United Kingdom version are different.
- The Italian N5 is the same as the British/UK version. (Model: D821)
- The USA version is another model D820.
You can use both N5 versions in Italy for 2G and 3G networks.
BUT if you want to use LTE/4G networks you must choose the D821 variant from UK/Europe/etc. NOT the D820 variant from USA.
