[Q] Import Nexus S from USA to Europe (Austria) - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA Community!
I want to import a Nexus S from the States as soon as it is available there. As I am not totally sure if there can be problems using it in Austria, Europe, I would ask for your expertise.
I will buy the unbranded version without simlock from Best Buy.
Will GSM and UMTS work with the European frequencies?
Is the German language natively supported? I mean all the automatic word completing of the screen keyboard.
I do not care about the power plug, as I can recharge it using USB.
As for the HTC Hero there were two versions, one for Europe one for the States, I am afraid that I can run into problems with the Nexus S.
Thanks for your help,
Burt

I would also like to know about the frequencies as I will be studying abroad in Salzburg next semester and hope to bring this with me. I would assume you could look at what frequencies your carrier operates at in Austria and compare those to what the NS supports, but someone more knowledgeable on this should probably chime in.
I know German is natively supported with dictionary and word completion (at least in 2.2), I use it all the time. I couldn't imagine them removing this in 2.3. In fact I think they added MORE language support, I think it's pretty unlikely they would remove functionality for a language like German.
As for the power plug, couldn't you just use an adapter?

Hello,
I thought Best Buy only ships to US & UK ?(Even not sure for UK) So how do you manage to get from Best Buy?
Thanks!

There are options for him, and anyone else outside of the States for that matter.

@burtner22: I'm from Austria too and I think I will wait for the mobile until it's available in Germany, which will be in February (if the rumors are true).
best regards
mike

these are the supported bands:
# Quad-band GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900
# Tri-band HSPA: 900, 2100, 1700

"Best Buy does not ship to known freight forwarders, and orders to such will be canceled."
Best Buy, why don't you want my Euros???
I simply can't believe this, it's so dumb.

For GSM I am pretty sure there are no problems, we have 900 and 1800 MHz in Austria, depending on the operator.
With UMTS (HSPA) I am a bit suspicious. I "assume" that we use 2100 MHz here, but the network operators seem to make a secret of the frequency.
Burt

That's funny. I've never heard of carrier keeping freq. a secret...

I just called the operator (A1.net), not even the second level support could tell me the frequency of their UMTS network.
Strange?!

Would be great if you could post your experiences using the phone in Germany. Also about the German spell checker and language support. In Austria it will exactly match I suppose.
I will sadly have to wait until the 10th of January.

Ah, spontaneous New York shopping spree?

i think the language support wont be any problem. its android and no iOS as long as you have no asian version there will be german implemented. it will be my first pure android device. had an samsung i9000 before. samsung's android is a shame but now we will have samsung's high-end hardware with google's amazing android know how. this phone will be breathtaking

Nexus s sold in US will be without any logo from the us carriers?

No, 900/2100mhz UMTS, AT&T uses 850/1900mhz.

Well, that's the million dollar question, isn't it? Many of us are waiting to find out the answer. The AT&T ROM which has already been released on this site should enable access to UMTS 850/1900 bands which AT&T uses. The question is does this phone have the hardware to support this or will the US version have different hardware to access these bands. The answer to this question should be revealed in the next day or two as UK versions of this phone start showing up on US doorsteps including mine.
great, thanks for the response...please keep us updated! i want to pull the trigger very badly on one of these and i have very little patience!
I know it sounds stupid but why go through the trouble of purposefully crippling the european version? I dunno it just sounds weird to me, and more like their deal with att ( att doesnt want tons of these being imported before they release their version ) is causing this lack of U.S. UMTS via firmware.
Well the Diamonds over there can't get UMTS because they don't have the 850/1900 UMTS radio, the hardware was removed to make it smaller. We're hoping the Raphael has the same hardware, but you never know if that's the case.
let's just hope they don't name it something stupid,I don't know how well the sugar trick would work on the surface of the Touch Pro to remove any stupid branding att puts on the phone. ATT manages to make HTC's sexy into slight trailer trash every time.

AT&T Fusion is what we're hearing.
I just spoke to HTC tech support, the guy said that there is a touch pro version in Hong Kong that works on the UMTS 850, which would mean that it would work on ATT 3G here in the US, he gave me a number for the HTC kiosk in Beijing (they have a tech support location there during the Olympics for HTC customers visiting) the number he gave me is 400-700-7011, its in china i haven't been able to get through. He also said there is a ROM upgrade for the Hong Kong version that would enable 3G on the 850 band. I am just as confused as I was before I called.

That's the 850 GSM, not UMTS. Yes, this has been covered with the Diamond, a ROM update enabled the 850mhz GSM band for it to be quad-band.

The tech made it sound like it was a different Hardware version, he may not know what he is talking about, but i was able to contact the people in China (through skype) but they were not helpful. She gave me the HTC Hong Kong number I'll try them later. Hopefully we can rule out the fact that there might be hardware differences.

Well if you can find anything with the hardware ID of RAPH110, I can personally guarantee it has the hardware to run on AT&T 3G. Other than that, we'll see within the next few days as people will be getting and testing RAPH100's with the AT&T ROM.

Touch Pro 850mhz?!

Good afternoon,
First sorry for the bad English, but only speak Portuguese.
I bought a Touch Pro and it does not work on network 850mhz, 900mhz only in network. Its change it?
I seen that it is possible for the Diamond.
If possible, can someone help me?
Grateful
Where did you buy the phone from?
are you talking about voice voice call 850mhz? if it is, touch pro should be able to handle 850mhz.
but if you are talking about 3G 850mhz, i think only the US version supports it

If you are looking for the 850mhz 3G band then I would buy the HTC Fuze from at&t in the United States. I believe you should be able to purchase one for $500 without a contract. Given that you are in Portugal and on the Euro that would be about 355.40 Euros
I don't know if they ship the phone internationally but it's worth a try at least.

I'm sure you could also find a unlocked HTC Fuze on e-bay as well.
Can you return the Touch Pro?
Thanks for your help.
I am here in Brazil and have 2 3G networks, a 850mhz and a 2100mhz. The same operator has the two networks, depends on the state. In my state is 850mhz, in the neighboring state is 2100mhz. How much need the travel unit with the 2 bands.
It would be possible to change the ROM him to work on both bands?
Thanks

Asus Padfone in USA?

I want to know if someone is using the Asus Padfone in the USA. (or other Countries)
I'm a little confused with the issue of carriers and their specifications and compatibility.
I would like to use Padfone on GSM with 3G or HSPDA+ (i.e. AT&T)
I see Padfone for sale on eBay and information you can give me would help me to order Padfone from Taiwan to USA.
All info are welcome.
Thanks in advance.

After researching I discovered that compatibility of Padfone depends of UMST / HSDPA especification.
Asus Padfone USMT/HSDPA: 900, 2100 MHz
Compatibility: Europa (partial), Asia, Australia (NOT Americas)
Samsung Galaxy S2 (i9100) USMT/HSDPA: 800, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz
Compatibility: International (World)
That would explain why Asus Padfone launched in Australia and Italy soon.
Conclusions: we have to wait for the U.S. (or Americas) version. Very disappointing.
I hope this information will help you...
The Padfone will work on AT&T. It will only, however, work on Edge off of AT&T. You'll be stuck with 2G speeds. Unless you wait for the 3G/H+/LTE version released specifically for the US.
There wont be a US version, at least not anytime soon. I had emailed Hai Trat at asus a few months back asking about the padfone. He said that as of now there are no plans on bringing it to the US market. They feel (as well as the carriers) that the market is too saturated over here. He did say he would let me know if this ever changed but it doesnt look like it will.
exact quote from the email:
"For the Padfone. I do not think it will be released in North American shores. The market it too saturated over here with cellular devices and our partnerships with USA/CANADA cellular carriers view it the same way. I’ll let you know if this changes."
I do think the international version should be compatible with ATT bands. Most international phones seem to have the same bands as ATT. It's the TMO bands that are a pain in the ass because they use the AWS band for their 3G/H+

I brought one from mainland China to Austin, TX. It works fine with AT&T prepaid card but only works on the slow EDGE2 network. Because padfone runs 3G on WCDMA using the European frequency, I don't think it will be compatible with any US telecom operator regarding 3G net.

Asus Padfone Infinity 2
Hi, guys a few days ago Asus present the second generation of Padfone Infinity, this new generation supports four UMTS bands (850, 900, 1900 and 2100) like Galaxy International version.
This fact is confirmed in GSMArena and Engadget website.

Buy nexus 5 from us and use it in Europe?

Hi
I'm thinking of buying the nexus 5, tho it has not arrived to my country yet and my resellers will put on a 100-200$ extra as they did with the nexus 4, so if I order one from Google play store (the unlocked one)(will order it through a post forwarding company) will it work in EU?
I have my doubts because I read a review that said " Network compatibility
Google has made two versions of the handset, one specifically for North America/Asia, and another for other regions like Europe."
Thanks in advance

I am also interested in this. Hope there is just one version that is compatible worldwide.
Thank you in anticipation to whoever can clarify this.
You can actually use the US model in Europe without problem, but you can't use LTE because the LTE bands supported in this US(& Canada) model are mostly not compatible in Europe & Asia.
The specs in the N5 page has clearly stated the different lte bands support.
North America:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41
Rest of World:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

Exactly the dilemma I'm having right now.
3G and 3,5G is quite fast in Europe. I'm getting 4-6 megs on 3,5G which is enough for me.
Heavy data usage costs more so I use WiFi for it anyway. In my case I'd buy one from US.
Considering LTE as a still early dev. technology in my part of the world I'm even more convinced.
I just bought a US version for use in Europe

If LG policy is still the same then you will have to send it to the country where you bought it. The question is: will they ship it back directly to your country...

Mi4 in europe

I just ordered my black Mi4 today and will hopefully switch from my z1c in a few days. Are there other users within europe to share knowledge with? Since 3g and 4g networks differ from the network bands used in the USA, it might be a good idea to get connected.
Of course, i'm still interested in sharing knowhow with everyone else of you too when it comes to non-network-related issues.

Of course, i'm still interested in sharing knowhow with everyone else of you too when it comes to non-network-related issues.

I have a white 3G one, since september and it works very well with european networks. Tested it in France and UK.

great! As France and Germany use the same frequency bands, everything should be fine then. I read a few complains about bad/no reception, but it seems like this wouldn't be a general problem after all.
No problem of reception at all. I get even better signal than my old S4 Mini, and better sound quality too.
whats best place to buy the mi4? just a reference is ok no need for full url..

it's available @ xiaomishop right now. Product ID M180
my order just went to status "shipped" today. Can't wait to get my hands on that cutie.
FDD LTE Band 20
The international version of the Mi4 is available today.
But there is no official support for FDD LTE 800 MHz (Band 20)
Maybe it comes out next year or we can get with a firmware update ?
FDD-LTE model is not available yet, you have to wait.

Nobody has reported success in unlocking bands on different model, likely hardware issue/impossible.

I do not think that this will happen with the MI4, just more in a new model like "MI5". In Germany you can use this Band 20 with t-mobile in some areas. You can not fix this problem with an simple software update, its more linked to the hardware conditions. But you can put me right
so i got my Mi4 yesterday. 2G/3G seem to work perfectly fine.
The only thing i'm still not quite sure about is localization. I currently use .12.12 dev-Edition. Seems like giving root-Access right out of MIUI is not available in stable editions. But sadly, the localized versions (in my case: german ) seem to lack behind. Not a big deal as i'm perfectly fine using english terms in my OS, but i wonder if there is any way to tell 3rd party apps (facebook etc.) that they should use foreign languages. Any ideas?
[edit] woohoo! This one did the trick: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.evanhe.locale
All 3rd party apps, that have any localization built in, now show up in german language

Being that Europe has the similar bands as the U.S. will it work in the States?
