The Nexus 5 has been on my potential purchase list along with the M8 Google Play and Moto X Dev Edition. Would any of you here recommend the Nexus with new phones on the horizon? Why? How about White vs Red?
Whatever I buy I only plan to keep until the Moto X2 and 360.
Thanks!

Yes these devices specs are net that much better and the full freedom to unlock is worth it nexus 5 100%

I updated my OP with what I've narrowed down to since posting it.
For me, unlocking/specs aren't too big of a concern with what I'm considering (they're all unlocked).
I'm more interested in the experience when using the phone and it's physical/UI feel.

You get regular android no bull**** everywhere. I would still reccomend it due to great price and the specs... phones don't get that much better
Still can't believe I got this much phone for so few $$$.

This is true. Price is a great aspect.
My concerns are
1. Screen breaking. From what I've heard, the screen on the N5 breaks more easily than some other phones.
2. Battery life. I use an iPhone 5s so I'm used to not superb battery life, but in contrast to the other phones I'm deciding between it seems to be a factor.
These two things are the biggest factors holding me back. M8 has insane battery, Moto has good, and they have other nice things (metal for the M8, active notifications on the Moto, etc.
Not trying to make a pure comparison thread here, but trying to see why current owners picked what they did over these devices (Moto X in particular because the M8 is really new).

I take the M8 insted of the S5 at any time.
If you are on a budget and enjoy of android development/updates, compact design and such, the nexus 5 is the way to go (everyone here who bought the red, loved it). Also don't get surprised if N5 works smoother than the M8 regardless of chipset.. Clean software makes the difference unless you are looking for GPE. Btw, I love Sense.
If you don't care about the size, love the look, build quality and don't care for paying much more, get the M8. Just remember that Xperia Z2 is coming too.
Go to a store where you can have them side by side, get which you like more. You wont go wrong these days. You are paying
I'm really only considering between stock android devices at this point (Nexus 5, M8 GPE, and Moto X). I've used the skinned M8 and Moto X at the store and was fairly impressed by the feel of each (Moto more so). I'm not on a budget, but wouldn't want to spend $700 and wait 2 weeks for the M8 if there wasn't some redeeming quality
Seeing as this is the Nexus forum I'm sure there will be some bias though XD

I've dropped my n5 plenty of times without a case (since rma was coming) nothing ever happened... i think it's just bad luck or i just get good luck.
thank god i'm a student... i would never spend 800$ for something that's gonna be outdated in less than a year
I think the main reason one would buy the m8 over the N5 is the speakers..
Battery life on the n5 is standard, nothing spectacular, not bad either.

IMO, M8 advantages are metal, MicroSD, speakers, S801 (fair bit faster than S800), and the biggest is battery life.
Of course, the N5 is easier to lock/unlock , is lighter, gets updates faster, and is cheaper. All good things that questionably outweigh the M8.

Where'd you get $800 from though (just curious)?
I should add that I only plan to keep this phone until the Moto X2 comes out

Also, how easy is it to press the lock button? From what I've seen, it's pretty high up on the side.

Haha I may get the X2 and Nexus 6, so no worries
I hold my phone with my left hand, and that's why I was semi-concerned about the lock button (it's funny though because I'm right handed XD). Is it easy to hit without moving your pointer finger?

Not sure if there will ever be a better phone to buy off contract for $350. That is until the next Nexus phone.
Battery life is one of the best aspects on the device for me and it compares favorably with most phones under proper testing conditions.

When I press the power button with my left index finger, I cant reach the Dock icons or navigation bar with my thumb without re- accommodating the phone in my hand. I have to slightly move the phone to be able to use my thumb.

That's what I was concerned about
I have fingers that are a bit longer than the guy in the picture's, but I don't know if I'd suffer the same problem. I noticed that one handed operation was very easy on the Moto X (and M8 believe it or not), but I never saw a Nexus to try.

So I been hearing about LTE and how fast it is and I couldn't believe it, so got me a thunderbolt, I came from iPhone 4 on Verizon and the speeds of data is ridiculous , I feel like I don't have to connected on WiFi anymore if 4G works, I also have a nexus s 4G and I wish the phone would come to Verizon with LTE or at least the nexus s, 2 things I saw that I don't like about the TB are the screen (resolution could be better and putting ambled right next to it make it look wash out ) and camera (I can't believe the iPhone 4 still kick ass in the department ) , other then that really like the pho.e

A couple of things if you wanted an AMOLED display, why not go with the droid charge? You still can for a modest restocking fee. And I will have to disagree with you on the camera. My fiance has an iphone 4 and its deceiving. The higher pixel density on iphone make photos look like they are clearer than the TB. But when you put them on a TV or a computer monitor you will find that the TB photos are sharper and more saturated. Not hating just suggesting.

Yeah probably I ma take a few shots and compare them , I like ambled but Sammy has disappointed me in the past, idk but I'm scared gps not working properly so I got a thunderbolt I know I will get used to the screen is just went you put it side by side you can tell a big difference but other then that I'm happy with the phone

I like the OLED screens on samsung, but no way is it a deal breaker between having the thunderbolt and the charge. Better screen or not, it doesnt make up for the other shortcomings of the charge. If you want a samsung phone, I would try to wait it out until probably the end of the year for the Galaxy S2.

Samsung for at least the near future, seems to be hoarding their OLED screens for only their phones, which sucks. I've heard rumors of an LTE Nexus S phone in the works (since there's already a CDMA one on sprint), but I have no idea which carrier will get it (since att and sprint are rolling out LTE very soon). Just noticed your signature says sent from a Nexus S. You probably knew it was built by samsung I assume, though obviously it followed standards set by google so it wasnt the typical samsung phone.

Well yeah I got a nexus s and TB, to make the switch from sprint to Verizon , nexus s is a good phone and the OS is controlled by Google , Samsung just gave them the HW they need it for it , and nexus s have problems sometimes with gps but not really as big as some other Sammy phones, and I wanted to get a nexus s with LTE but I don't think that's happening anytime soon so I think the thunderbolt is a better choice

I am excited to receive my Thunderbolt, hopefully tomorrow (Wed).
I was waiting for LTE to be delivered. But, I was also waiting to compare the HTC Sensation on TMobile before making a choice.
Overall costs and VZW's unlimited 4G were the deciding factor.
I had a Samsung Captivate on AT&T and was severely underwhelmed. the screen was nice, and I liked the carbon-look aliminum body. But the GPS issues, AT&T craptastic voice quality and data network dropouts in my area made me hand it back in only three weeks.
MY GF has an iPhone 4, and had 3 and 3GS before that. The camera on my old Nokia 5800 is only 3.2MP and takes much clearer pictures than her iPhone 4. She asks me to take pix with my non-data phone just because hers is pixellated beyond belief. And it is slow to acquire lock and take the picture.
I really hope to love the TBolt.

Ok so here is my story first we were with att they sucked balls so we payed cancellation fee and moved to verizon and we got three lg revolutions we returned all three because the screen colors are nasty the screen looks like its made of yellow pixels and the battery and camera were just way to ****y. So next we got droid charges this is **** like the screen is nice but it scratches in a day ,the phone overheates after 5 minutes of use ( not overclocked) and would lose gps fast ,and it felt like a toy no kidding. So next we got thunderbolts had it for a week and love it No problems the screen is not as good but at least it dont scratch as fast and i like the thunderbolt because it has so much roms not like the lg where they have no roms or the charge where they have only debloated roms **** that ,Thunderbolt is king .

Anything else they add to this phone that can possibly effect battery would not be a good thing. This phone is light years better then the S3 except if pictures are important to you. Then I would wait and see if Google updates the shutter lag. If that happens there would be absolutely no reason to not get this phone.

The camera is atleast comparable to the S4 (better than the S3) maybe try the mod somewhere in the dev section with higher quality photos and sharpness as the results look pretty convincing .
The effect on the battery wouldn't be much as the S800 in the N5 has at least one Hexagon core which is an extremely low power DSP so essentially it works like the Moto X cores so it would be similar in power usage, just needs activating .

The camera is only good to take pictures of non moving objects. For anything else don't expect to capture the moment because that moment will be long gone before the camera actually takes the picture.
As far the s800 and what it can do. They also said it was an extremely overall battery efficient cpu but that is proving to be some BS as well. It uses battery like every other cpu we have seen in the past. No one is getting great battery because of having the s800 so I do not believe any other tasks it takes on will not effect battery life.

But still, it would be very difficult work to emulate how the Moto X works on the Nexus 5, even if it is possible, and the cpu allows it. Changing the purpose of the phone is a hard thing to do. Every phone is built with something in mind.
If you want the features on the Moto X, and have them fully working (not ported or emulated), you should buy that phone.

I assume you're talking about the shutter lag? Without HDR i take photos in an instant with focus so maybe I am lucky, havent missed anything yet .
The S800 is an extremely efficient CPU, playing games it WILL use more power as its providing more frames but in every other task it will use less power (a lot less), the modem is integrated so using mobile and wifi data uses significantly less power and with some fancy tech Qualcomm and reduced mobile data battery drain with envelope tracking.
You're missing the point entirely, the Hexagon core in simple terms is an extremely low power processor that can stay on all the time, its not used at the moment so you have no idea what its potential is but power efficiency is similar to the Moto X! I did say the effect wouldnt be much, I didn't say it would be 0 lol you would probably see a few more % drained but not much.
Wait till its gets used and decide if you want the all ways on feature .

Also going to add to this. What about the people who live outside of the US and can't get a Moto X? I was hoping the Nexus 5 would have this feature and was really disappointed. I read another thread here that said the technology in the Nexus 5 would allow for this feature although it might mean it turns off the pedometer feature(which I don't care about)
I started this thread about getting a bounty going for getting touchless working through the co-processor. It seems to have died down.

There are a number of reviews comparing the two. I have the N5 now but am tempted to grab a Moto X. My biggest dislike on the N5 is the camera but it doesn't sound like Moto is much better.

I know... It's a damn shame the N5 doesn't have the same build quality and active notifications like the Moto X. Would be the perfect phone.
they are entirely different devices, really.
same category, different angles at the market.
Why do people even consider both options? If the nexus s was for $350, would people add that too?
Endless advantages to the nexus 5, but the moto x only has a few.
Trusted Bluetooth, always listening and colors... That's it.

Yes it is. But it doesn't take away from it being an excellent phone trust me. Although in my opinion the Nexus is the cleAr winner in performance, the moto x performs extremely well, you'll wouldn't know it had a dual core processor if no one told you so except for gaming.
It's really a matter of preference. The moto x is probably the better phone because it does the phone functionalities better (call, speaker, battery life) but to me the nexus is the better device (S800, stock android, unlockable bootloader, 4.95 inch 1080p display, better overall performance).

yes and no. while one of the the processors onboard the X is dual core (the snapdragon s4), there are a total of 8 cores shared between the S4 and the other 2 processors. that's what i call research and development.
That battery life has me considering it... My cousin has it & one charge lasts 2 days... That being said... I feel like not much beats a nexus. I'm sure I won't regret my n5 purchase when he is sitting on KitKat while the n5 will have great development & future updates.

I had both ended up returning the moto x. It's a great phone but I was spoiled by the N5 screen, which some don't even like. Test drive them both to see what works for you and your uses. It's really the only sure way of knowing. Return the one that looses.

This. I'm happy with my decision and I had researched it thoroughly before making the decision. Moto has been known to produce locked bootloaders and sell editions known as developer editions with the bootloaders unlocked. The main reason everyone is on XDA is for development. So IMHO just the fact the Nexus 5 comes with an unlockable boot loader alone is reason enough for me to love this phone. But then again, everything about the phone is great. And most flaws are software flaws and will be updated and fixed shortly as Google has said.

Nexus 5 vs Moto X
I think this is the most honest review of both phones that I've read on the web and it comes from a Nexus Disciple. If you don't want to read it he pretty much says the Moto X will be the better phone once it gets Kit Kat which it has. I have the Nexus 5, I'm getting the Moto X on Monday. I'll sell one of them after a week of use.
http://www.androidcentral.com/nexus-5-vs-moto-x
I had the Moto X for two weeks and then sold it when I got my Nexus 5.
In my opinion, there is no comparison. Active notifications is cool but I can accomplish almost the same thing with customized LED notifications.
The battery life was great, but with Franco kernel i'm easily lasting a whole day on the Nexus.
I cannot stand the screen on the Moto X. The resolution isn't really what bothers me but it just seems "weak" when compared to the Nexus.
Overall there is nothing that would make me use a Moto X again. I honestly can say the only thing I miss is the small size.
The bootloader on the Moto X can be unlocked pretty easily now. Google is serious about making Motorola a player in the smart phone market once again.

I'm with you. I started with a nexus 5 that I loved then tried the moto x but the display was painful to stare at, way too over saturated. Came back to the nexus and I'm so happy. The nexus 5 display is outstanding.

Once again I agree. The moto x screen is really not that good in my opinion. I loved everything else but the display was a let down especially after having used so many great screens (note 3, G2, HTC One, nexus 5).

I was thinking about getting an X for my wife, IT guy at work has a Moto X on ATT and his battery lasts for two days, TWO days! He likes the phone very much so far and he just updated to KitKat and I have not been able to see how he likes that yet. N5 battery is very nice to me, I can sometimes go from 6am to bedtime on one charge but most days I need to top off the battery before I leave work or as soon as I get home.
I read a lot of people saying the Moto X runs very very smooth, and now that KitKat is out for it I am sure it is even better now.

Battery life on the moto x is absolutely outstanding, no doubt. It performs also very well but not quite like the nexus. The nexus feels like butter.

This is not true unless you get the developer edition.
As others have said its a matter of personal preference. This is my first nexus and coming from a moto bionic with locked bootloader to this is a huge breath of fresh air, for me. If you are as interested in tweaking your device as most around here are, you can't go wrong with the n5. If not, the x is probably a good choice.
Also the statement that the x has 8 core is wrong, it's highly optimized but definitely does not have 8 under the hood.

I still have my nexus 4 and wondering if I should sell that and get the moto x. I'll still have my nexus 5 as well but I really want those touch less controls. Its really something I can see myself using.

Have preordered Moto G 16GB from amazon uk and still not in stock. So Im looking at used Nexus 4 too at almost same price as Moto G and cant really decide which one will be better?
What will u choose beteen new Moto G or used sold by private persons Nexus 4?
- Batterytime?
- Screen?
- Functions/features?
- Camera? Read that N4 have better camera? How about video recording?
Know that N4 is faster, but mine woman dont care about speed and more about "design" of the phone and she like the violet back I also ordered for Moto G.
Or simple say, which one is prefered for a woman to use and easy to use?

I'd wait for the Moto G, the Nexus 4 is indeed faster, but the design (It's very wide... Not good for small lady hands) is very blocky and prone to breaking (being all glass). Also the screen looks better on the Moto G, and battery life is waay better. Camera's both suck.

Go for the MotoG. I had doubts when got mine, but its fantastic device. No regrets!
I got my Moto G today and my Nexus 4 goes on eBay later! I'm very impressed with the G. It's better than I expected.

Hi,
Just got my wife a moto g, I have a nexus 4.
I ran Antutu benchmark test, and the moto g got a higher score.
Personally, I like my nexus. Its got more ram, a bigger better screen, coloured notification lights and it gets updates quicker (I'm on 4.4).
But... If I were buying another phone now, I'd probably get the moto g. Don't like 2nd hand phones, can be asking for trouble. We paid £129, superb value. A nexus 5 is what? £350?

I wait for Amazon.uk to ship Moto G then. Too bad not gonna get it this year and shipping is after 25 Dec.

I was also deciding between the Nexus 4 and the Moto G.Since the 16GB version of the Moto G doesn't ship until mid december, I bought an used Nexus 4 about a week ago to test if it's battery life is good enough for my needs. It had about 3,5h-4,5h SOT during that week and there were several moments in which I wished it had more battery life. Next monday I'm gonna try out the Moto G in a shop and see if it feels as snappy as my Nexus 4. If it does, I'll definitly resell my Nexus4 and buy a Moto G instead.

Nexus 4 software is missing the bionic and dalvik optimizations, Google omits them. Moto includes software patches for the X and G that improve bench scores. Rooted n4 scores 20k+ normally, even as high as 24k.
However I am here about the topic. Recently someone knocked my phone out of my hand and the front glass shattered. The back glass is okay, so the person who said the build quality is bad, is wrong. Mine broke because the other person was moving fast while I was still. I've dropped it before with no damage, but this time was different.

Never heard about that webpage and after read about it. It doesnt ship international either and I dont live in UK. It doesnt have in stock either 16GB version and with Borderlinx. Total cost will be the same anyway.
I just received a Moto G for my friend and did some pics while setting it up compared to my Nexus 4.

Although the Motorola's phone is a really nice, fast and smooth device, I think the Nexus 4 is a better option if you have any chance to get it.
I saw a thread on here started by someone who thought that their Note 3 purchase lost a lot of value because it's a Samsung product and I decided to investigate the validity of this perception.
I took data from the most recent 1000 Ebay SOLD Listings...listings where the item was actually SOLD and a buyer paid money for it. I did this for 1 year old mobile devices from both Samsung and Apple flagship models for the Verizon network:
Galaxy Note II 16gb
iPhone 5 16gb
Here are the results:
AVERAGE
$341.47 - Note 2
$392.19 - iPhone 5
$220.87 - Nexus 4
AVG - 10 highest/lowest values
$340.73 - Note 2
$392.01 - iPhone 5
$221.25 - Nexus 4
RESIDUAL VALUE
65% - iPhone 5
63% - Nexus 4
57% - Note 2
Of course, I'm not claiming this to be scientific but it gives us a rough idea.
No matter what phone you buy, this industry is seriously broken when the product you buy loses ~50% of its value in just one year. People are drunk on this stupidity and Samsung and Apple are both getting rich from feeding this crazy addiction!
I'm glad that the bar for "cheap" phones keeps being raised by Google Nexus devices. As these fairly high end cheap phones enter the used market and as consumer realize what a ripoff brand new phones are, the used phone market is going to increase in my opinion.
I think a used Note 3 will hold its value much better than the Note 2 since its specs are so far ahead of the pack, even as a used device, it will hold its own. This is all speculation, we'll find out for sure when the Note 4 comes out and people start selling their Note 3's.
Please see the PDF for details. At first, I was only planning to compare the Note and iphone, but then threw in the Nexus as well at the last minute. Again...NOT SCIENTIFIC, just a general idea.
BOTTOM LINE: You want to lose a lot of money in a year? Buy a mobile device! It probably has one of the worst residual values of anything you can buy! LOL!
This is great information. I got my note 3 at an upgrade price of $188. If I can get anything near that for it in two years I will be very happy. Thanks for the investigation

Ah yeah and thanks to diminishing returns, I think this market will start to slow down soon, just as the pc market has. It gets to the point where it's just not worth the effort to upgrade. Note 4 is rumoured to have an even higher resolution screen for example. What's the point when the Note 3 screen is already crystal clear?

I agree! Anything above 350ppi is just a waste of GPU cycles and battery. If you were President of the Note division at Samsung, what would you do to the Note 4 to improve it? I mean, it's a highly competitive market, how else do you impress consumers and fend off your competitors' spec jabs at your product?
Only way to get ppl to buy the next phone is if:
1.) Rollup Flexible Screen
2.) x86 compatible
3.) Last > a week (removable battery) (same weight and volume)

Doesn't take much to impress you does it?
Lots of HTC phones have dual front facing cameras and all cameras pretty much already exceed expectations for their typical intended purposes.

Respectfully disagree. I have a Canon S120 that costs 1/3 as much as any super phone, but no super phone can take pictures like this little thing.
Cell phone cameras have come a long way, but they still have a long way to go before equaling point and shoots like the Canon S120.
Personally, I'm not too worried about battery life because it's easy to swap in a fresh one. One week on heavy use? That seems too long. Three full days on heavy use seems more reasonable to me.
Roll up screen would be nice but that might not come until the Note 7/8/9. I would be happy if they made the screen with flexible AMOLED so that if you dropped it, it would not break. Then, coat it with something scratch proof so it won't scratch either.
I liked where Sony is going with their waterproof models.
If the Note 4 has unbreakable glass on the front with a scratch proof coating AND exceeds Sony's waterproof phones' ratings, then I would definitely upgrade again.
They can spend the rest of their time optimizing TW and maybe adding one or two new features (if they are really cool features) but for the most part, optimize and stabilize.
And lastly, improve the camera, add OIS...try to make it as good as a Canon.
Oh wait...how about dual micro SD card slots? That would be dope! 64gb micro SD x 2 + 32gb onboard = 160gb total for those of us who hate using the NSA monitored cloud.
Well, just remember, Samsung is staffed by people and people enjoy vacations and holidays as much as anyone else. Gotta pick and choose your battles. We can't get everything we want in just one year.
Amazing post, thank-you. I posed myself this exact question this morning, and then 20 minutes later I see your post.

Don't know if you know this, but dual facing cameras actually don't exist on any HTC phone, you know what? In fact they don't exist on ANY phone.
On the contrary, dual SPEAKERS exist on quite many HTC Phones.
Heres the interesting question, based on logic, What do you think is the liklihood that "camera" was actually a mistype of "speaker"?

I'd like to see the Note 4 have a full size SD slot so we can have 256GB on one card. Managing filesystem across two microSDs would be a mess. One SD doesn't have that problem.
