Keep Pictures and Files on the Cloud - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried searching for a thread concerning my question but couldn't find one. I'm really surprised nobody brought this up. Or my searching skills are really messed up... in which case, I excuse myself.
What I want to do is to make some room in my sdcard by automatically uploading pictures, videos and files (if possible) to my Google Drive (or any other Cloud Storage Service) and delete them locally. Basically, making my cloud drive a truly virtual drive.
Has anyone tried/achieved such a thing?
Thanks.

The default photos app does that

DropBox does this. Check it out. www.dropbox.com
It allows you to view your files from any device you choose.

No, that way pics get backupped but won't be deleted locally (to free up space).

You're asking for functionality that is very hard to be implemented, even tho it sounds simple.
Basically there are no real viable ways to verify if a given file is not corrupted when uploaded to the cloud. At least not in a way that won't be creating singe huge overhead.
Anyway, if you find something that works, let us know, I'm also interested in such app/script/whatever.

I think I've partially achieved the goal by using DropBox. Unlike Google Drive, files aren't deleted from the cloud when they are deleted locally. But I have to manually delete files from the phone, since I haven't found a way to delete on upload. And, thought, this just works for pictures and videos, not for other files, that would have to be uploaded manually too.
I know that even when sounding simple it's not that easy to accomplish... but I believe Google made the Moto G with such a small storage capacity (to reduce costs too, I understand) to be complete with cloud storage, so...

Its in beta stages but I bought it a few hours ago. It works great for downloading from your dropbox account and most uploads have worked very well so far except some .jpg images. First app of its kind for dropbox and I love it well worth the 2 bucks!
This is tempting. I know Dropbox has an official app on the way, but who knows how long that will take!
Is there a big advantage to using Dropbox over, say, Gmail? That's where I tend to stick files I want to get at from anywhere.
Dropbox has an unobtrusive program which you put on your PCs and it automagically keeps the Dropbox folder sync'd on those machines. (Without bogging things down or any effort involved, I might add.) Plus, you get a very nice web UI.
Sharing with other Dropbox users quite easy, and also allows sharing with the world via a public folder. It does some other stuff, too. I really don't see much overlap between Dropbox and Gmail. I love them both.
If anyone wants a referral code for some extra free space on dropbox, feel free to PM me.
This is just a thumbs up for Dropbox.
The Droidbox app works great on my Nexus! Well worth 2.00.
Dropbox is probably one of the best apps I've ever used period. Once installed, it just works. No intervention is required at all, and it really is set and forget software. Once it's running you don't even know it's there. The best!
i didn't find the iPhone app useful at all, but with Android I can see it being much much more useful with the actual ability to properly browse files. I'll wait till the official client though..
Why is`nt anyone mentioning that there`s no thumbnails, a bit useless if you cant see the picture you want, other than that its perfect

Way to bump a year old thread. Have you tried the official Dropbox app?
Well I`m pretty sure I have Dropbox, has the open box, so I take it from what your saying that it does have thumbnails?
Maybe I need an update
No, no thumbnails.
Well for it to be perfect, it does need it other than that I wont be using it, to many pictures...

Awesome Drop

New app just popped up, 'Awesome Drop'. You just open the app on your phone, then go to http://labs.dashwire.com/drop and put the access code from the page onto your phone and drop files right into your browser and they get transfered to your phone. No account, just simple file transfer wherever you are.

neat, thanks
useful if you don't have the usb cable with you
This can be used to send files I have to my friends with Android phones. Awesome. Thanks for sharing.
This is great, just hope the site is able to stay up from the strain of a lot of concurrent file transfers.
Yeah I've had this for a little while, it's handy for transferring small files, but I noticed it tends to choke/hang on files over 100 megs.
How?

it's a one way app, use 'websharing' or something like that if you want 2-way
Actually quite awesome.
I wish the reverse was possible though.
A tab that you could open and then drop files from a built in file exp. into the drop box.
Well, the only thing that stops me of using this "Awsome Drop" is the lack of Opera.
But that might be the lack of HTML5 support from Opera, rather then the app. and website creators fault thou..Even thou Opera 10.60 was a "giant step" towords "full" HTML 5
heres a video that i did on the application to give users visual on how easy this really is:
Hi agian!
I couldnt wait on Opera Software or the app website too like each other so I downloaded a firefox.paf.exe too the computer I was using yesterday. And it worked like a charm, the only thing Im woundering about is when the "prossesbar" at the website is finished the prossesbar in the app. isnt full.Does the prossesbar installed and running on the phone view an other prosses?Like total amount how many MiB Ive downloaded or how much I can download to my cell before its full?
Just use drop box.... and share folders with friends...

Dropbox. If the 3.25 free gigs of space isn't enough, just set up multiple DB accounts. Upload pics to one, phone backups to another, docs/etc. to a different one for example. Anyway, that's what I've been doing for years now and it's worked out fine besides the signing in and out under different accounts.
•any site offering 5gb or more for free is usually a scam, phishing technique, or some other cyber STD, hack.
Stick to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box.
You're better off using Google Photos which connects to your Google account when you start up the app. You get unlimited storage when you upload your photos in a specific resolution or lower. I forgot the exact resolution. It does everything in the background or when you tell it to and it's completely free.

I guess you never specified if you want your photos made public or private?! Default Google settings have your uploaded photos readily available/visible to prying public eyes. Just a forwarning.

Not true at all. They're private until you decide to share them. And if you're lucky enough to be a Google Fiber customer you get 1TB of storage.
I use Flickr, works seemlessly for me so far. Default values are private... Creates an Auto Upload album (or something similar). You get 1TB i think for free.

Looks pretty attractive with free 1TB. Is there a file size or resolution limit? I don't want my photos to be altered after uploading.
Google photos works fine for me.

[Q]Can anyone help...how to free up my phone's storage?

my phone( HTC desire) has not enough storage now. But in fact i don’t know how to free up my phone’s storage. i’m afraid that i will clean up the useful files by mistake. So could you tell me the best way to fee up my phone’s storage?
Thanks in advance.
firstly, i think you can buy another storage card. maybe you can store more important files in your phone.
if you want to save money, i’d love to recommend a kind of android PC suite which i often use for you.
that’s MoboPlay. it can automatically free up your phone’s storage. it has unique feature named space(junk) cleaner. it includes two functions, APK Files Cleanup and Large Files Cleanup.
hope you have a try. Both are useful.

of course.
MoboPlay is a free mobile phone application, you can download from its offical website.MoboPlay you will know more from it.
after installing this PC suite, you can go to the “ToolBox” tab and select the option “Space Cleaner”. As soon as you do that, a popup window will appear with two tabs named, APK Files Cleanup and Large Files Cleanup.

}
It automatically scans through all the APK files to find and clear junk file. But if you want to free up more space, then try the large files cleanup.
then, you just simply click the “Large Files Cleanup” tab and hit the “Scan” button. It will scan your entire phone for large videos, images, unnecessary documents, etc. You can click the “Clean” button associated with each junk or large file to remove it instantly.
that’s all. very easy.

Videos becoming corrupted on sd card??!!!

I posted about this before but found the screenshot I took when I changed my storage for videos to my SD card. There were only videos/photos on one day that became corrupted literally in front of my eyes. My question... where can I find the locations mentioned in this screenshot? It's like only part of the data was saved on the SD card... all Metadata missing and videos show all binary zeroes... yet the size is still reflected on the file....

Usually it is /storage/.../DCIM/... on either location, isn't it?
Does "details" of the video/picture (within gallery) tell you anything useful?

I'll try anything! Thank you! I tried several programs to restore based on data from other videos recorded and nothing worked so far.

No luck!
Forget it, it's lost for good. SD Cards are crap. Always. Not to mention inadequate filesystems.
Simply don't rely on them but for the future: Make sure to have a proper backup, for example:
