Please help me! Can't connect my Nexus 5 to USB - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my Nexus 5 today, and I am trying to put things on the internal memory of the phone. However everytime I plug it in to install the drivers automatically, it says an error occurred during installation, and kicks me back out, and refuses to work. I use Windows XP still, 32 bit, and it asks me to search the web etc for hardware, and it never finds anything.
Does anyone know how to connect this thing? :'( I tried on my Windows 7 laptop too and same problem, except this time it worked as an SD card, but in the bootloader to root the phone it fails to install?

Google universal naked usb drivers. Try those

I managed to finally get my USB and camera to "install successfully" but no matter how long I wait, the storage never comes up.
:'( what is the problem?? All other phones they just install and are ready to go. This is my main Windows XP PC btw.

The mtp divers on xp can be a pain.. have a search for a thread that is somewhere on here, it covers most of the problems on xp

I have a Windows XP PC too and have MTP working. Try doing the following to get it working - Update windows media player to 10 or higher, install the mtppk12 = MTP porting kit and install the Microsoft user mode drivers for MTP. These should get you going.

That's way too much work. Just search for drivers in the N5 threads. I had the same problem, there's a universal driver like the person above said.

Windows 7 RC + Touch Pro

Hi guys,
I've just installed the Windows 7 ultimate RC on my PC and am now unable to sync my Raphael. I've installed Windows Mobile Device Center, but when I plug in my phone I get a message saying 'USB Device not recognized'.
I've tried both the stock rom and the Energy 3.0 ROM.
Anyone experiencing this also? Any solutions?
Thanks!
Same problem. But I couldnt even install the WDC? Which version did you install?
Weird
I'm using Windows 7 RC 1 (build 7100) and it works flawlessly with my TP. Installed WMDC 6.1 without difficulties.
PROBLEM FIXED for me

Could you specify as to whether that key is located in Windows 7 or your phones OS?

Sorry.In Windows 7
uh oh. i'm thinking of wiping vista from my machine and just using rc1. should i hold off on doing this?
Happened to me not 5min ago
1. Find the device in “Device manager” and remove it
2. Re-Plug in the device
3. A windows should try to install the software (Little popup in the task bar)
4. Click on it when it fails and tell it to check windows update to find drivers
I just installed RC1 last night. TP syncing just fine.
running windows 7...wmdc installed fine...
IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS SYNCHING!!
make sure to go into your phone settings
-go to connections
-go to usb to pc
-uncheck enable advanced network functionality
k thanks for the help guys, can't wait to get rc installed!
Thanks for the replies!
I tried all suggestions posted here, but none work.
The funny thing is that even when I put my phone in USB Drive mode, it still isn't recognized.
Updating the driver through windows update still results in 'An unknown device, your drivers are up to date'.
Syncing works without problems on my WindowsXP laptop..

This really worded for me. I installed Windows 7 the first day it was available and I was never able to figure it out how to make it worked until today. Thank you "The Muffin Man"
Running windows 7 RC and first few days when plugged phone in nothing happened. Was in no rush to get sync working as dual booting with Vista and was just plugging to charge phone. Other day I got a prompt to install device centre 6.1 and never done anything to initiate this. Wonder if an auto update may have caused this?
Works perfectly for me and tried with both Energy 3.0 and Elite RC4 (WM6.1 and WM6.5 ROMS).
In Vista atm so don't have W7 build number to hand.
I had a similar issue a few weeks back on my xp rig. Turns out I just needed to re seat my micro sd card, worked instantly.

go for it.. everything works great.. love the device support! plug in ur printer and thats pritty much it
Uninstall the "Windows Mobile Device Center" in your Control Panel, and plug your phone in again
Well i'm one step closer to fixing this..
I went into my bios and disabled USB2 (switching back to USB1).
After reboot my device was recognized and synced without problems.
As soon as I enabled USB2 again the device was undetectable again, even though Legacy USB support was enabled.
All other USB devices work, both in USB2 as USB1 mode.
Needless to say I don't want to run in USB1 mode.
Since I didn't have any of these problems with WinXP I assume it's a windows 7 issue.. Anyone knows where I can report this?

Sounds like a driver support issue with your USB device (Motherboard).
I just installed WMDC and it worked without any problems.

I've down loaded the tetherxp.inf file, but when point the setupwizard to it, it can't find it.

still getting the "the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software" pop up.

sucks as i'm trying this on a fresh XP os installed notebook. so i don't know what could be causing this... (yess all updates have been updated)...

no problemo
This definitely isn't working with Windows XP.
This worked fine with my Nexus One. I had to install tetherxp.inf for it to work.
With the Nexus S, I removed all devices, uninstalled the drivers and started from scratch. No go with either the tetherxp.inf file or the RAR file posted earlier in this thread.
I can't find any other documentation on the Net that shows that Nexus S can tether with Windows XP.
Has anyone gotten this to work?
try this...
go to the PDAnet website http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php download their software onto your computer(free), then follow the directions on the screen. it will install the latest drivers onto your computer. i had to do that with my work computer too.
Well, I did that and now I just have a copy of PDSNet on my machine
I still can't get XP to recognize my Nexus S. When I plug it in I still get the New Hardware box that asks to find software for USB Device.
What I did was to add entries to tetherxp.inf for Nexus S which matched the signatures in device manager after I connected my phone to xp and turned on usb tether. I then installed the driver from tetherxp.inf.
Bazinga.

definitely...the only time i ever had Nexus driver issues was when i changed from HTC to Nexus
the best i can offer is how i fixed it...get a copy of Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit and follow his instructions from deleting all other drivers and installing new ones...he offers (i think) 4 different options and you just work your way through them until one stick (the RAW drivers always work for me)
and note that the Toolkit doesn't work on 4.4 yet, so only use it to clear and update drivers

Thank you n7of9 the link you provided worked for me.
Another solution...
Plug the phone into your computer. Go to "Device Manager" and find the Nexus <x> device where-ever it's listed (may not be called "Nexus...", though on my machine with the real drivers it was).
Right click, choose "update driver software"
Select "browse my computer"
Select "let me pick..."
Choose the option. "usb composite device"
Apply and close all windows.
Disconnect and reconnect the phone to the computer.
The phone will now allow you to move files to it properly. Something weird with proper phone drivers. I believe you need to reverse this if you need to use ADB again in the future.
This worked and also fixed another popular issue
Not only does this fix the MTP connection issue to move folders to root folder. But it also now allows me to see the preview thumbnails of my media! This was a huge problem on my other phones and many many people including me were never able to fix that. All the ideas to get around or create USB Mass Storage instead of MTP after 4.1 were fails.

Worked perfect, thanks
what worked for me
In windows 8.1
I plugged in my nexus and browsed to device manager in control panel
I uninstalled the device (and deleted the driver)
I unplugged the nexus 5
I plugged it back in
Windows recognized it as a proper MTP device
I think the problem was something to do with windows recognizing it as an ADB device (I had installed the toolkit before etc)
This fixed it for me

Hi,
I did all the steps mentioned, and ran the driver test - everything works fine, success.
However, I still cant see my device in "This PC"...
What is even more weird, that it only disappeared couple of days ago, and I didnt do anything to my computer at all....
Any other way to get devices to show? (Nexus 10 or Nexus 4 stopped showing too).....
Maybe problem is that it is being shows as ACER ADB Interface? But i cant change that to MTP anyway..

works fine on 8.1 here
Oddly enough, I have no issues on my Windows 8.1 Desktop but on my 8.1 laptop, it doesn't work at all. Both we're upgraded from 8.0, no fresh install. Both worked before. Obviously something more to it than just Windows 8.1

Thanks, it helped halfways. It can't find drivers for Nexus 5 and MTP.
EDIT: Deactivated USB-Debugging and it worked! Thanks!
I´m looking for mass storage mode.
All I was able to do was to get working ADB mode and MTP mode. Totally easy....but whatever I do....no mass storage mode?!
Where did you read that? Google suppressed the mass storage mode with jb, since 'internal sdcard' is merely a folder of data partition mounted as a virtual vfat disk through fuse.
I can't imagine they suppressed a feature from android filesystem setup to introduce it back on a single flagship device.
And even if I'm not dev, every dev questioned about this said it's impossible with this filesystem setup. It would be only possible with a separate partition, (like on my sgs3) with external sdcard for example.
i have an original 8.1 and an win8 upgraded to 8.1...

If you mean to uninstall it, then I did it couple of times, and now again when the device was disconnected. Then I reconnected the device to the USB port, and scanned the deice manager for changes.
I got the same result - see attachement.
Delete then reboot both devices. Connect phone again. If same, delete device and reboot phone whilst still connected
If that fails, delete and use "universal naked driver"

Never seen that before. Your drivers obviously aren't set up right. Google 15 second adb drivers xda and use that to install the drivers. It'll also set up adb/fastboot which you may or may not need. It gives you the option

It's supposed to work fine even with it on, at least it did when I had it on. Tested on Win 7, 8, 8.1 and 8.1U1 lol. I never had any issues with USB ever.
Or use Linux, it'll work right away..
It's not set to Camera (PTP) instead of Media Device (MTP) ?

Guys.
Thank you all for your kind help.
I tried at least most of your advises - but there were no joy...
I think that the best I should do now is somehow clean up my system from old drivers and related installations.
So, taking aside the option of reinstalling windows, can you share with me some procedures that will enable me to get rid of all old drivers and files and to reach a state of a clean system, so I can then start reinstalling the drivers again?
Thanks a lot!

I have similar problems, and as many times as ive tried to uninstall and reinstall i cannot access it from my 1 laptop. However, another laptop connects fine to it- even though i used the same drivers on both laptops. thats the only way i was able to get it to work for me.

Hi Guys,
I had a rooted 4.4.2 device, when I got the the 4.4.3 upgrade and I think that from then I cannot see my device on my laptop.
(I am not sure of that because I CAN see it on my work desktop...)
Anyway, whatever I do - I get the following results:
1. Device manager shows me under the "Portable Devices" the brance F:\
2. When I try to install new ADB drivers, it tells me that "WPD fileSystem volume driver" is the best for me...
Storage usb connection setting is set to be MTP.
Meanwhile, I cannot see my nexus 5 files on my laptop
Please assist, Thanks!!!
