Experiences with ART? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Was searching through dev settings when to my surprise I saw dalvik/art. Anybody want to share their experiences so far? Improvements or bugs?

I just turned ART on so I would like to know as well...

I haven't had any apps that didn't like ART yet. Definitely makes things faster/smoother having the apps pre-compiled.

ART is part of KK so yes, it would be included. I turned it on and things are really smooth. Loving my M8.

Just because it's part of KitKat doesn't mean it's guaranteed to be included; the HTC One M7 didn't have it because Sense 5.5 and below weren't optimized for it.
However, I just switched to ART to see how it runs - so far everything has been smooth but then again I only switched about 2 hours ago.

I used art on my i605 and Toro. Saw more of a difference on those phones. This phone is just too smooth for art I disabled it not long after enabling because a couple of my apps don't get along with it.

Threes. Order of chaos. A few older Gameloft games as well. And then some misc apps that have been abandoned.

Polaris Office Viewer doesnt seem to work with ART. Also the camera began to become a little finicky for some reason. had to switch back

I was using ART for a bit but honestly I don't see any speed improvements over dalvik on this phone. My DNA yes, it was night and day, but on this it's snappy as hell either way. I switched back to dalvik to use xposed
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk

Arts been working great with no issues for 3 days.

Why can't you use xposed if you use art

Because art is experimental and can change before final release. It is a lot of work to port xposed to art and the dev does not want to waste his time.

i tried last night. took FOREVER to reboot and then go through starting all the apps. then my tap to wake and gestures didnt work. i went back to dalvik and all is fine. did i need to let set in and cool off?? and yes the phone is stupid smooth normal can art make even smoother? idk

I've enabled art myself took forever to start up actually was getting a tad irritated then it finally came back on in my opinion it runs a little smoother haven't had any problems at all with apps

Some Good news, fixed more multitasking issues....

Good news is that after spending over a week or so digging into the framework to see what changes HTC did, I managed to undo some of the mods that HTC did, like kill(hibernate) the previous app after x mins, so now multitasking works for the most part like it should. I just now need to free up some more memory to able to run more apps simultaneously even tho I'm running the bare minimum for memfree settings
Goooooood wooooork

It's CM10.1 + paranoidandroid + aokp so the extra system overhead causes the lag.

I was just bout to say the same....... I'm sure with some tweaking, I can reduce this lag. Just have to wait and see. My OG is asleep on the Welcome Screen for the night, because that is how I usually do to let it ALL settle in. Although, I flashed the NoA2SD version straight up, so I don't know if that will make a difference. Either way, it is still PAC-man 4.2.2 on the OG. Can't say it hasn't been done.
Sweetness presented to us again from the great Wambo, nice stuff brother.
Like the NBA Jam game, Wambo is on fire! We are getting ROMs on the OG Evo I'd thought I'd never see.

To help a little with the lag, I go to settings/developer options, scroll down towards the middle & turn off the animations. Change all 3 from 1x to off. I think it makes a difference, you might not.
And by the way, I'll say it here too, thanks a sh!t ton for this Eric, love this on my og. Running great still, thanks bro!

No problem man. I appreciate it. As I said, as long as I have to use this phone, its gonna get 4.2.2. I saw the light with the Note2 for a little bit and there was nothing quite like it. I'm hooked on jellybean.
P.S. my default action is always turning animations to off, then sideloading Nova and disabling there too. Yes. Works like a champ here.
Yea I always either turn off animation or set it to.5x

Side load=have a backup copy from play store in an app folder on my sdcard. Go into file explorer and tap to install.
I meant to add it into the ROM, but I got lazy. Its a lot smoother than Trebuchet imho.

Not necessarily sideloading it makes it smoother, I mean nova in general. In Nova Settings - Look and Feel - Scroll Speed and Animation Speed set to faster than light.

Indesicive

Hey, so i have a question for all of you veterans on here. Im mildly experimental, so i just do the basic flash a rom here and there deal. However, im running hyperdrive rls14 with stock kernel on my Verizon s3. Since it gives me options to have beats audio, aosp email and clocks as well as other great features like the touchwiz motion controls, I've been running it for a few months now.But ive realized its heavy on my battery life, and my phone has been getting hot more often than before. I felt like that partially due to the amount of ram it takes up. So does anyone have any good suggestions as to what i run? Because ive heard things such as pure stock is boring and want to make a good decision.
You can still run this, but I suggest you try the things that you want installed, and those that you think you can live without remove them. I think that will make a huge difference.

If flashing something different I'd say check out Andybones bonestock ROM. Along with the AOSP theme. Slicker than owl snot as my dad would say.

Also = AOSP, right? Well there's Halo, nightlies, "less" lag, faster updates (currently at Jb 4.2.2, TW is at 4.1.2), no TW bloat, (customizable) soft keys, and a host of other things. It's not what AOSP has that TW doesn't, sometimes it's what AOSP does not have which is why folks choose to avoid TW.

Nexus 5 Began Lagging After Root?

Hi! So I just rooted my N5, flashed Franco Kernel, Xposed+Gravity Box. So after this when I'm at the home screen there is an ever so slight lag when I click the recents button or go home from app tray, etc. So basically it kind of lags on the home screen, no widgets or anything. Is this my fault and is there anything I can do to fix it? Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
mess with the settings, find what you like. if youre still unhappy, try a different kernel, or different rom. try a few, find what you enjoy and what fills your needs. then youll be trully happy

Okay I'll try to fix this or I'll flash a rom. I think it's Gravitybox that's making this beauty lag.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
It is gravity box. I quit using it for the same reason. Now, if I want features like what GB offers, I just use slimkat... Which has most if not all plus more hard coded

Oh I knew it may have been the culprit! Well I think I may just flash a custom rom for the features and avoid the lag. Thanks for the awesome advice!

ART vs Dalvik

Had anyone tried enabling ART in developer options? If so, what were the results? Just wondering if its worth a try.

I had Nexus 5 before this S5, Ive tried ART with some mixed results. With ART on Nexus 5, everything seems smoother and some battery effects (but may be placebo). With S5, everything seems similar in regards to smooth yet FCs from some installed apps like Connection Optimizer and few others. This is very brief on advantages/disadvantages. Its more like a personal preference when people choose one over the other, Dalvik/ART, but you'll have to test yourself and see what you think, form your own opinion about it. Honestly, I'd test it now before Android 4.5/5.0 comes with it by default runtime. Some say no, some say yes, its definitely though agreed to be in development and has a lot of potential towards being great.
wait until the next major android version before using ART, it's not stable enough yet, and there are many apps not compatible with it.

Bingo. It's not stable enough and many apps you know, lov, and use a lot are not compatible with ART yet. Hopefully Android 4.5/5.0 (whichever they decide) will make ART stable as hell and be able to be used 100% of the time.
