Current Status for m8 Bootloader Unlock / S-Off: RELEASED
Update 4/6/14: A Firewater S-Off method is released for the HTC M8. Please see the following tweet: https://twitter.com/firewaterdevs/status/452934672063156224
Go here to do it: http://firewater-soff.com/
----(Begin Old OP)----
The HTC M8 has launched for Big Red, and much to our dismay, HTCDev does not allow for us to unlock the bootloader through the traditional avenues.
Presently, there is no known workaround.
Thus, this is a thread for conversations regarding any progress being made on a bootloader unlock/S-Off method for the VZW HTC One M8.
Try to avoid being speculative as much as possible. Please post any updates you see in other threads and on other sites. Also, if notable champions of previous unlock methods/exploits want to post their efforts here (*ehem beaups et. al...), by all means, feel free!
This is not a bounty thread.
----(End Old OP)----
My m8 will be here tomorrow and can't wait.

Had my M8 since yesterday morning. I tried HTC Dev Unlock as soon as I got it hoping it would work. No such luck. I hope I'm wrong but I think we have a long, long wait for S-Off.
On the M7 there was a 5k bounty to get S-Off. It took from March 8th until October 7th to get S-Off on the M7. Last I heard only around 1/2 the money was ever received by beaups.
No one has been able to achieve S-Off with software on any M7 with 4.4.2 so I doubt anything is close on the M8.

jtag service. They need to take your phone apart, pass. I'm sure the Java card would work too but most are looking for a software exploit. Other methods are risky and mean your need to send you phone away. Unless you want to buy a 1200 Java card.

Sure, if you get someone upstanding. The java card method is not risky, it's sending your phone through the mail to a stranger and getting it back in 1 piece that is risky.
The only solution for the majority of users is a software exploit. That I think is a long way off. Just my opinion and hope I'm wrong..
Have you seen the breakdown for this phone?its super hard to open.
To be honest...I don't even care about s-off. If I wanted aosp I'd switch to T-Mobile and get a nexus.

Lets not forget that this phone has a SD Card slot and that makes for easier exploits. Beaups will come through sooner than later probably. The phone is excellent stock just like the DNA I came from. No worries guys.

Like I said...I hope we get s-off. I've just noticed a trend with myself...and I don't need root like I thought I "needed" it a few years back.
The only things I use root for is WiFi Tether, Titanium Backup and occasionally I like to flash CM...but I always find myself going back to and Sense.
Hopefully Beaups will hook it up. Cross your fingers and say a prayer if you believe in that sort of thing.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe we're still out of luck on that. Unless you updated to 2.20 from 1.85 with superCID. Thats the only work around to my knowledge.
Doesnt HTC have to let us root within 90-120 days from release?
---------- Post added at 01:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:27 PM ----------
Ahulab- yes you are correct there or if you were previously unlocked(supercid hand in hand obviously) you could unlock using your original token instead of having to regenerate another
This video will tell you what you need to know: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvCpR45LKA
Any updates on the Unlocking of the Bootloader or the Root Access for 2.20? I did not koww about this before purchasing the AT&T HTC One X.....very disappointed but if it is just a matter of time then i can wait, not sure how it normally goes for these things??

To be a bit more specific, the write protection mentioned above is actually enabled in the 2.15 firmware rather than the 4.2.2 Android software version.

I agree, the thread title and the OP should be revised to mention 2.15, as those that were updated "officially" to that hboot version prior to SuperCID/S-off (or received their phone that way) are the only ones affected.

Having the correct thread title will make it clearer to those who may be able to help you. When asking for help you need to make sure you're as specific and correct with your terminology as possible, it makes it a lot easier for people to help. You can change the thread title by editing the first post in the thread while viewing in a web browser.

Naw.
Seriously, though I haven't heard of anyone working on it. Although all it takes is one talented individual to be working on it, for it to happen. And devs will often not admit to working on something for a variety of reasons. Not the least of which, is that they don't want to disappoint folks if they can't crack it, and they don't want people constantly nagging them "Did you hack it yet?".
There might be a spike in interest for such an exploit if/when AT&T deploys the same write protection on their Android 4.2/Sense 5 update. According to the poll on the ViperXL thread, 65% of those that responded are on AT&T.
I have to agree. I'd put money on the fact that when the at&t release comes there's gonna be a buttload of interest in getting this firmware haxxed. There simply aren't enough people (and devs) dealing with this problem at this stage. Wait until there are hordes of Americans complaining about it, then hopefully we'll see some action.

Firewater S-off for HTC One XL!
Firstly let me say that this isn't my own work, all credit goes to @beaups and @Fuses for bringing this to our device.
Firewater is a new method for achieving s-off on HTC devices.
For everyone that has taken the 5.18 at&t update before unlocking you should be able to use Firewater. It has a temp root feature which will enable you to get s-off on your device, once you have s-off you can get SuperCID via a simple fastboot command (fastboot oem writecid 11111111), then you can unlock your bootloader at htcdev. I'd really appreciate any feedback on whether this works for you.
This is just a simple thread to get this method some exposure for users with our device. As per the licensing section on the site and beaup's wishes I cannot include the download or instructions in this thread. However, we can have this thread serve as a troubleshooting/help location for the One XL. Alternatively, support for rumrunner s-off is available at #rumrunners on the freenode and andirc networks. Please make sure you meet all of the requirements before contacting support.
Firewater S-off.
Please go give beaups and Fuses a bunch of thanks for their work!

Since I like to run the updated AT&T ruu whenever they come out WeakSauce-1.0.1.apk worked great for temp root and to get everything going again without needing pc after initial ruu. I was wanting to test stock for abit then was on the road and wanted to go custom and weaksauce worked perfect.
I am on 5.18. temproot gives the same errors others have posted. Weaksauce enables a successful su but firewater fails, not always with the same messages. I would love for this to work, but it looks like I'm just going to get any M8 anyway and make sure I s-off while the exploits still work on it.

Not sure why anyone is suprised. Those of us with the M7 knew this month's ago. For the first day after the M7 was released you could use HTC DEV unlock then VZ made HTC lock that down for the M7.
I too hoped maybe VZ had not gotten to HTC yet for the M8 so I tried but no luck. Will need to wait for rumrunner or firewater to be updated to support the M8. It may take a while....

Yes sir. Rumrunner gave you S-Off which is "Signature Off". Once that is set, you can flash custom recoveries and then custom rom's. It took months for the team to get this working and I know it did not work on 4.4.2. I think we are in for a long wait. If you bought this hoping you could get custom rom's you might want to reconsdier. If you like the phone and can live with it stock for a few months, it's a great device.
The M7 was the best phone I ever had and I swap phones a lot.

I did catch it and as it turns out firewater just doesn't work on my phone for some reason. firewater is supposed to work on my verizon HTC One M8 and unfortunately I am out of luck in this. I suppose I am forced to wait until another method to s-off my phone is available.

I understand that it will give me S-Off now but as I said before I am currently broke. So i am hoping an alternative to Firewater and Sunshine will come soon.

I read through everything on that thread and tried getting the 1.84 SuperSU and it didn't have the binary issue. However, it still didn't have firewater work. I still got the Whelp message. I guess for whatever reason my Verizon M8 hates firewater. I'll just have to wait for an update to firewater or an alternative to firewater and sunshine. Thanks anyway.

You could be waiting for a long time.... Sunshine is the commercial successor to firewater. Why would they update the free Firewater if they are trying to sell Sunshine?
I wouldn't put any money on the odds of an alternative to firewater/sunshine coming out anytime soon (if ever) either......
$25 is the equivalent of 5 grande lattes with an extra shot. Most people can save that kind of money within a week - maybe two.
I would be curious to learn why Firewater works on some phones with the latest firmware, hboot, radio etc and doesn't on others which seem to have the same specs! Can anybody shed any light on that????

It's a great question one I have had since a bunch of threads popped up with people having firewater issues. I agree with you though $25 in the grand scheme of things isn't that much. I am feeling sleepy time for a latte : )

I just received a warranty replacement of my Verizon HTC One M8. My older unit had never taken the 1.55 OTA, I had simply flashed the radio and portions of the ROM via TWRP. The replacement unit had 1.55 on it before I could do anything. While I was able to use weaksauce to root, root was extremely unreliable, sometimes taking multiple reboots, and, as the OP points out, I could never get the binaries to download. Then I ran firewater (several tries) and got the same results, "whelp.....you're outta luck."
Yeah, that's $25 I could have spent elsewhere, but it's not unreasonable for Sunrise. Fact is that it gets S-OFF without wiping a thing, and for that alone and the time saved it's worth it.
