With the recent announcement that HTC will be unlocking bootloaders on new devices via OTA releases in the "near" future, I find it odd that there wasn't a Verizon phone in the lineup. Especially since Verizon claimed that it was a manufacture issue, not one from the carrier. Is anyone privy to info that could ultimately reveal what the official stance and relation is?

I don't think HTC will unlock bootloaders at all, I think they gonna make unlockable bootloaders which is a different thing.
To the topic who know we'll know more when the photon 4G comes to Sprint since it sounds like the bionicand if the bootloader is unlockable then is most likely the Verizon doesn't like unlockable bootloaders

HTC said that the unlocking of bootloaders will ultimately be in the wireless carrier's hands as far as the final say so. Verizon does not have a good track record for being community friendly.

Because not caring about people rooting is very anti-community..
What phones were you expecting them to unlock? The ones that have bootloaders that have already been bypassed? lol

This.
Expect to have to continue unlocking bootloaders the hard way. At least HTC phones are relatively easy to crack. Now Motorola... my old Droid X is still not fully unlocked and likely never will be. Oh well, so happy I got my Thunderbolt. It's been one hell of a device. Even if HTC cannot fully uphold their claim to having unlockable bootloaders, I still prefer them because so far it seems most of the time they CAN be unlocked, eventually. That's reason enough for me to choose them over M anyday. Not to mention their build quality just feels nice.
Yeah, Verizon hasn't been very community-friendly. But that doesn't explain why certain LG and Samsung devices have launched without any sort of bootloader lockdowns.

Not to mention the fact one of the Grand Poobahs at Motorola came right out and said if you want an unlocked phone don't bother with the Bionic.

Verizon lie? NEVER!
I honestly believe that HTC, Motorola, etc. don't give a ****e about locking bootloaders. Blame the carriers.
Oh my, more choices.
Not sure if I should hold out for these versions but from my understanding either this dev or google version will only be 16gb?
Where as there is a 32gb currently with at&t?

Even more AT&T S4's will be on Swappa, craigslist, and ebay. All depending on the price of course. I would think it would have to come under the Google edition price for folks to be interested.
If this is priced under the Google Edition, I'll probably be putting mine up on craigslist when the Developer Edition it comes out.
Unless, of course, this could help Adam or Dan or someone else find a permanent unlock for the bootloader...

at&t pricing under the google edition? I seriously doubt it.
Wonder if at&t will release it before google. Samsung really whoring themselves out with this galaxy model this time around huh
Don't look now but rumor has it that HTC is coming out with a Google edition soon.
Nice! This is what I have been waiting for, best of both worlds. Just wish it was the 32gb.
If it's subsidized, I will be picking one up! Still have 2 upgrades available!!

Thank you for pointing this out.
Half of the people posting on these threads no idea how to root/mod/flash anything as it is and are learning. Half of the people I talk to about my s4 being rooted don't even know what it means, I say ROM, they go "Whats thats!"
When I sold my s3, the guy had no real concept of what it meant when I said It was rooted running a stock rom...
"What does that mean?"
"Um... let me put it this way... You're getting better battery life, features, and all sorts of stuff than a regular S3 is..."

Most developers have moved on from the VZW S3. And I'm leaning towards there will probably never be a fix for the locked bootloader

As far as I know, the only developer for the s4 is @mohammad.afaneh , and I don't think he is even working on the bootloader. It's three generations old, and I doubt any unlock will be made...
BUT
You can use JTAG to downgrade to the bootloader unlockable firmware... its around 100-150 bucks though from what I have heard.

Crazy how there is not much talk about the Note 7 with it only about 2 weeks away. I am really mixed about getting it still since I know it is going to be locked. The only thing that is really holding me back at this point is not being able to use Viper. There are a couple of other things that would be nice to still be able to do but those aren't major. Android has come a long way and the need for a custom rom just isn't what it used to be. I really like the Note line and prefer to stay with it so I may just bit the bullet and go without root. Whether I get it at launch will also depend on the special offers they are giving out. I got the Year of Netflix and free VR with the S7 Edge before I returned it so if they have a simular offer, I will probably jump on it.

I was just thinking this same thing...i own my note 5 outright so i may just trade it in if there's a good deal...progress has been made with root on the s7's so I'm hopeful similar leaps are made...nonetheless, i have to say, my girls note 5 is bone stock unrooted and with few exceptions there's little that can't be done...for her nothing, and for me, well, I'm just finally learning to develop on Linux so i definitely want to keep SOME rootable device in my stable as well, but that's might end up meaning a second device (next nexus?) and swapping my sim around smh...it's just that usb3.0, ip68, 256gb storage and 6gb ram PLUS a true edge screen is almost too much to resist, root or not, plus there's always samsung pay while it's still 0x0...i see myself getting it, only question is when and will i also spent flagship money on a second device (OP3? nexus? Htc?- pretty much all are sd820...) until a good root method or unlocked bootloader becomes a reality....

Nexus devices are so cheap, you can always pick up one for around $200, excluding the 6p. The devs here on XDA are top notch, so I'm always confident they'll come up with something.

Well a locked bootloader is a locked bootloader in most cases. The s7 exploit is really just a Samsung repair kernel that was leaked that's really not fit for prime time, unfortunately...
And even that is still limited in no custom recovery or roms, just stock debloat, xposed, viper/etc...

I wouldn't say can't, it can in fact happen and has. It just isn't easy. There are snapdragon devices that never got stable CM builds. Just in the case with the exynos, the odds aren't in their favor.
If I do get the Note 7, which I probably will, it will be with the knowledge that if most likely will never be unlocked. I have been running pure stock and not even rooted for a couple weeks now to see how unrooted life is. I have been rooted and running a custom rom for several years now. Like I said before, there are some cool features in custom roms but the need for them just isn't what it used to be. The only thing I am truly missing is Viper. So for me it comes down to the simple question of which is more important. What is more important, all of the new features of the new phone or the ability to use Viper.
I swore I wouldn't buy a locked phone and would move to the Nexus line but based on the rumors of the next Nexus phones, I am not thrilled with them. I just don't see anything that I would rather move to over the Note 7 based on what we know so far. That along with the fact that I am on the original Jump program so without needing to buy the phone outright, I need to pick from T-Mobiles selections.
A lot of the reasons to have root can be accomplished with apps so life without root isn't a huge deal for me anymore. I just wish there was a Viper alternative that can be used without root. Anyone know of one?
