[Q] Google Keyboard Update Causing Crash? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anybody else been experiencing any crashing when using the Google Keyboard? I've updated it to the latest version last week and every now and then the pop up letters when typing disappear, follows by no registry of input and then the application crashing .
Any idea how to resolve this? I've sent feedback to Google but not sure what else to do.

I have the very same issue. It happened maybe 4 times in the last week (I've got the phone three weeks ago). The three last occurrences happened all in the last 24 hours. I simply uninstalled all keyboard updates. Will see if it works.

Yes uninstall the updates

Uninstalling the updates is a temporary fix. Possibly because they get reinstalled automatically (I am not sure how to prevent that from happening from core apps like the Google keyboard). And resetting to factory setting makes me lose all the vocabulary I've taught it. It seems 4.4.3 should fix it but meanwhile does anyone have a keyboard app to suggest? Thanks

My maps editor crashes with ADP1.1h

After I upgraded my phone from RC33 to ADP1.1h a couple of days ago (wiped) the my maps editor app crashes seconds after loading, for me at least. Can anyone please confirm this and/or know a way to fix this?
I tried re-installing the program thinking it was that but mine is still crashing, too.
I never used that program, so I installed it, and I get the same thing.
Click on the app, it comes up, then 1 second later it disappears.
It must not be compatible with the new version of maps. Since it's a google app it will probably be updated soon
do you all have the JF builds with multitouch hack? might be related to that... just a guess

Phone shutting down/SMS area code issues (Fixed)

Hi everybody. Although this is my first post I had registered a couple of weeks ago and have been lurking for a long time. I thought I would post my experiences with the issues in the title in hopes that they might help someone else.
Th first problem I tackled was the SMS issue. With some contacts I could not reply to messages because their displayed phone number did not contain the area code even though it was listed in my phone's contact page for them. I also could not initiate a text message from their contact profile as the area code would be dropped when typing the message. The only way I found to send or reply to a message was to start a new message and enter the beginning of their phone number or name then the phone number would be displayed correctly including the area code.
I tried all the suggestions I found here and other places. Such as deleting all cache and log files as well as deleting the individual contacts and recreating them. Nothing I did solved this issue. What was really weird is some of my contacts did not have the area code in their phone number yet it would be added when messaging.
Finally I sync'd my contacts with gmail. I then logged in and made sure all phone numbers had the correct ten digits. Then I performed a factory reset on the phone and resync'd my contacts with gmail. All messaging issues were resolved.
Doing a factory reset gave me the ambition of trying to solve the phone shutting off after being charged. This was a problem as long as the charge was at least 78% to 80%.
After fixing the SMS issue I left the phone completely stock for more then a week. Not once did I experience any shutdowns. I then installed LauncherPro Plus. Immediately the shutoff issue returned. After several days I performed a factory reset and left it at stock and experienced no issues for another week. Reinstalled LauncherPro Plus and the issues returned.
I performed another factory reset and installed ADWLauncher. After two weeks of use not a single shutdown. Thinking this was fixed I started installing apps. Although not as severe the shutdowns returned. Uninstalling all the apps resulted in the phone no longer shutting down. So I started installing apps one at a time and testing for a few days in-between the installs. Some apps would cause the phone to shut down while others were fine. There really was no pattern to which apps worked compared to the ones that didn't. Both Handcent and ChompSMS caused shutdowns.
After a couple of weeks of using the phone with installed apps that caused no shutdowns I installed Spirit Level Plus. Once again the phone randomly shut down when charged above 80%. This made no sense as this app should have minimum interaction with the operating system. Then, for whatever reason, I had an idea. I uninstalled Spirit Level and reinstalled it using TWLauncher and once installed switched back to ADWLauncher. The phone never shut down after this.
Thinking I might be on to something I installed both Handcent and ChompSMS using the same method. What a pleasant surprise it was when after a week there was not one shutdown. So I installed a few more apps and still did not see any issues. This was maybe a month ago and since that time I have probably installed 40 - 50 apps using the same method and have not seen one shutdown.
I apologize for this post being so long but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. Hopefully this will help someone else and also be a small repayment from me for all the valuable info I have gotten from the forum.
stock or not it will reboot. the phone has a hardware issue. warranty it asap.
Still no random shutdowns. As far as exchanging the phone I think I'll hold off for now. Sending it in under warranty will most likely get me a refurbished phone that may or may not have the same or other issues.

Google Messenger not working

Can anyone help me figure out why Google Messenger is showing all my contacts as Unknown Sender. Everything works fine if I use Textra or the native sms app. I'm using an Honor 8.
The exact same thing just started happening to me with my Honor 8. I don't know what caused it. I'm on the 7.0 EMUI 5.0 Official build, and it just started happening last night

I tried reinstalling it but it still persists.
It also stopped working for me with the update to 7.0. Extremely annoying considering its my go to SMS app and I can't stand the stock one :/ Considering a factory reset...Unless anyone knows of a fix. I've played around with every permissions setting and have zero luck thus far.
I've had this happen to me too. It's very frustrating. I'm considering a factory reset, but would be even angrier if that doesn't fix the problems. In addition to every conversation switching from "Unknown Caller" is that the keyboard or reply option is completely gone. I had to switch back to the native app.
Other issues I have with EMUI are that Google Camera doesn't work, although I heard that Google is only allowing that to be installed on Nexus devices. It doesn't show up in a Playstore search anymore. Attempts to side load it have failed.
Another issue I have is that the Email app won't dismiss the unread count bubble all the time. It seems to be intermittent. A reboot or several hours clears this issue up for awhile.
(Sorry for multiple bug reports in this thread, but Google Messenger not working is really bothering me most.)

SM-G955u Apps Randomly close

I can't find a solution to the issue I am having. It happens with all Gaming apps and if I click on a link in Facebook it will close out. The app will close out with no error message. Not sure how to fix it. If traced it down to the initial Google updates after activating phone. If you factory reset the device and stop the auto updates. It will work just fine. If you install the 30 something random google / bloatware apps. The issue comes back. ive also tried flashing the factory firmware a couple times and that didnt work. The S8+ is an ATT phone if that helps.
If anyone can enlighten me, with a fix for this issue that would be grand.
I've search google up and down and cannot find even a mention of this issue.

Updates stuck at 100%, Gmail does not notify, and other issues.

I am desperate, I can't find the issue here. I have a S10 (Xfinity unlocked on Verizon) , I can't seem to update apps, they get stuck at 100% or 99%, AND some things like Gmail and Instagram do not seem to notify that I am getting messages.
Here's the kicker, I factory reset the phone some 5 times now, and still have the issue. The Reset fixes it for a few days (if even a day) and then the issue starts up again!
the phone was just upgraded to 10, but it was happening on 9 also!
no clue what the problem is ! it kills me! Please anyone have any idea? I even had an authorized Samsung dealer do a "software refresh" and then wiped out the phone again, and I'm still having the same issue..
HELP! please.
thank you

Boot into safe mode, it will only load your system apps and not your user apps. Then try to update your apps, if it works then you know the issue is being cause one of your user apps. Then you just need to identify which user app is the offending app.
It also might be caused by a conflict between various settings or maybe you have some things disabled or turned off that are causing this.

That kinda works.. but again, as said, I have reloaded the phone over and over, and it works fine, until a few days later and stars over.. And updating is not the only problem, Geolocating is slow, sluggish or not working sometimes, Push updates of emails are slower or not happening. just weird things..
I am not sure what it could be! its like the phone is the problem!

Ok, everything I posted went completely over your head, I'll try again.
If it is working like it is supposed to while in safe mode(which is only loaded with system apps and system settings and not any of your user apps or data) that tells you that the issue is caused by some user app that you have installed or something in your user settings. In other other words, it is very likely something that you, as the user, have installed or setup/selected, it is probably not the device. It keeps happening after resetting because you are not changing what you are doing that it is causing it, it is something that you keep returning to after resetting the device. You just need to figure out which user app is causing the issue or whatever settings are causing the issue.
The way to do that will be trial and error. Uninstall one of the apps that you have installed, then use the device for a few hours, if the issue continues, that wasn't the app causing the issue, reinstall that app then choose another user app to uninstall and then use the device for a few hours, if the issue continues, that is t the app, reinstall that app, and so on and so on, etc... Get the picture? When you uninstall an app and the issue stops, the last app uninstalled is probably the app causing the issue.
I suggest resetting the device again. Then, only install one of your usual apps but don't install any others and don't change any settings, use the device a while, if the issue does not occur, install another one of your usual apps but don't install any others, basically, install one app at a time until the issue occurs, when it does, the last app installed is probably the offending app.
Or, if you don't find it that way and you get all of your usual apps installed without triggering the issue during the trial and error process, then you need to go through settings by trial and error. Changing one setting at a time and using the device a while to see if the issue occurs, if it does, it probably has something to do with the last setting that you changed before the issue occured.
Slowly changing one thing at a time over an extended amount with time between each change, will allow you to isolate exactly which app or setting is causing the issue.
Or maybe you need to flash your stock firmware via PC tools to start over with a clean installation.
