Phone shutting down/SMS area code issues (Fixed) - Captivate General

Hi everybody. Although this is my first post I had registered a couple of weeks ago and have been lurking for a long time. I thought I would post my experiences with the issues in the title in hopes that they might help someone else.
Th first problem I tackled was the SMS issue. With some contacts I could not reply to messages because their displayed phone number did not contain the area code even though it was listed in my phone's contact page for them. I also could not initiate a text message from their contact profile as the area code would be dropped when typing the message. The only way I found to send or reply to a message was to start a new message and enter the beginning of their phone number or name then the phone number would be displayed correctly including the area code.
I tried all the suggestions I found here and other places. Such as deleting all cache and log files as well as deleting the individual contacts and recreating them. Nothing I did solved this issue. What was really weird is some of my contacts did not have the area code in their phone number yet it would be added when messaging.
Finally I sync'd my contacts with gmail. I then logged in and made sure all phone numbers had the correct ten digits. Then I performed a factory reset on the phone and resync'd my contacts with gmail. All messaging issues were resolved.
Doing a factory reset gave me the ambition of trying to solve the phone shutting off after being charged. This was a problem as long as the charge was at least 78% to 80%.
After fixing the SMS issue I left the phone completely stock for more then a week. Not once did I experience any shutdowns. I then installed LauncherPro Plus. Immediately the shutoff issue returned. After several days I performed a factory reset and left it at stock and experienced no issues for another week. Reinstalled LauncherPro Plus and the issues returned.
I performed another factory reset and installed ADWLauncher. After two weeks of use not a single shutdown. Thinking this was fixed I started installing apps. Although not as severe the shutdowns returned. Uninstalling all the apps resulted in the phone no longer shutting down. So I started installing apps one at a time and testing for a few days in-between the installs. Some apps would cause the phone to shut down while others were fine. There really was no pattern to which apps worked compared to the ones that didn't. Both Handcent and ChompSMS caused shutdowns.
After a couple of weeks of using the phone with installed apps that caused no shutdowns I installed Spirit Level Plus. Once again the phone randomly shut down when charged above 80%. This made no sense as this app should have minimum interaction with the operating system. Then, for whatever reason, I had an idea. I uninstalled Spirit Level and reinstalled it using TWLauncher and once installed switched back to ADWLauncher. The phone never shut down after this.
Thinking I might be on to something I installed both Handcent and ChompSMS using the same method. What a pleasant surprise it was when after a week there was not one shutdown. So I installed a few more apps and still did not see any issues. This was maybe a month ago and since that time I have probably installed 40 - 50 apps using the same method and have not seen one shutdown.
I apologize for this post being so long but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. Hopefully this will help someone else and also be a small repayment from me for all the valuable info I have gotten from the forum.

stock or not it will reboot. the phone has a hardware issue. warranty it asap.

Still no random shutdowns. As far as exchanging the phone I think I'll hold off for now. Sending it in under warranty will most likely get me a refurbished phone that may or may not have the same or other issues.

Extremely Strange Text Message and Voice Mail Behavior

The strangest thing. I just ported my number from att to sprint two weeks ago, and I haven't received any texts, calls or voicemails in the last few days and have been so busy with work I didn't think anything of it. However today I randomly received 15 texts and 5 voicemails. A lot of them were angrily asking me why I was ignoring their calls and texts. I was on the phone with sprint technical support and they reset my settings with the network and I started to receive all kinds of random texts from the last two days in random order. The technician said he never saw anything like that before. It's just so strange. My emails never stopped coming in, only the things that are sent directly from my phone from the sprint network. elguapo76 pointed out that I should have my phone on hybrid instead of just evdo, which I did. And diesel556 said
"I believe that text messages queue on the server if the device is unreachable. The same thing would happen if you went out of range on the Verizon network.
Unless you have a legitimate bug with the service."
Any ideas about what I should do to fix this? Or can anyone get more into depth with what this is? If there is a way to permanently fix this I would love to know. Thanks in advance!
Did you recently apply the update patch? It could have fixed an issue with the system throwing up a flag when your ROM gets low on storage. This was usually perpetuated by a ROM leak that many of us have experienced. Basically what happens is that if you have used bluetooth and it gets stuck connecting (hard to tell at times) it will create a 6mb-15mb core dump. Over time this will fill up your ROM storage memory. After your ROM gets filled to a certain point (whether by the bluetooth ROM leak or user function) it will throw up the flag to the server telling it to halt all sms and voicemails. Before the patch you could hard reset and recover your ROM storage memory but the flag would not come down. I know for myself it took me a couple of days to figure out I was not receiving sms/voicemails after I got some upset people emailing me why I had not got back to them. With the recent MR these bugs have been resolved and the flag could have been taken down thus freeing all your sms and voicemails from the pits of sms and voicemail hell. That's just a possible theory.
Would you say there were a plethora of bugs?
Interesting. Two days ago, I used my moto bluetooth headset for the first time. Curiouser and curiouser. However, I did use the update the day that it came out. I restored with nandroid and upgraded that same night, so I shouldn't have had that problem. Actually, when I tried to connect before the update, I couldn't even connect that headset to my phone.

Losing SMS messages - on 0.6 Fresh ROM

Hey everyone! Yesterday, for the first time since I rooted and upgraded my ROM, I did not receive txts from anyone even though I sent our several texts - even spoke to my friends today who said that they responded. And it wasn't Sprint's fault, cos even after rebooting my phone, they wouldn't come through. But texts sent after rebooting would come through successfully.
Any idea why? I went through a whole day thinking my friends were ignoring me. Not a great feeling on Thanksgiving's eve
FYI - I've just set up Google Calendar to send me an SMS alert every hour just to make sure that I'm receiving txts from now on. It's not the easiest workaround, but at least if I'm down, I'll know it's just for an hour. Any thoughts?
I'm gonna say it's not the ROM and blame it on Thanksgiving.
If HTCIQ force closes on your phone for any reason then every thing will functional properly including sending texts, but you won't receive any. And a reboot won't cause them to come through. I'm not saying that's what happened (did you have any FC's?) but it's possible.
But just like vox said, there's no reason to think it's the rom. There have been 325 downloads of 0.6 so if there was an issue, it would be a known one. Kind of one of those "if you are the only one experiencing the problem...." type of things.
FYI, so far I've received my Google Calendar hourly alerts for 12, 1, 3 & 4 pm (it's now 4.27pm PST) but the 2pm one did not come through I remember yesterday that I had a force close message for the Voice Recorder app. Could it be possible it's one of the apps running in the background?
What's HTCIQ? And how do I prevent it from FC'ing?
Do you have any themes or optimizations or anything other than fresh 0.6? Are you using clear as a bell?
How did you put voice recorder back on?
Nothing of the sort, just been installing apps. Haven't optimized or changed themes at all. So far today, every hourly txt from my Google Calendar came in except for the 2pm one. I'm going to have it send me hourly texts from now on just to make sure I won't go by more than an hour without receiving one. I know it's a random and sporadic issue and there's probably no fix, but I just wanted to put it out there in case it happens to someone else.
Are you using any sort of task killer?

Good question.
I have TasKiller installed but I stopped using it over the last few days. I'm still experiencing receiving issues. My Google calendar alerts have decided to skip every other hour now Especially in the middle of the night. Fri night, the last alert came in at 9pm and the next one came in at 1am. This sucks
I experienced this problem for the first time last night. Texts were sent and nothing showed on the phone. Once I rebooted texts came through but only new ones. Any texts sent while the phone was apparently having issues ended up in /dev/null. Since I've read about this happening previously on other, non-rooted and non-flashed, Heros I test occasionally just to make sure things are working as expected and always right before I go to sleep.
The force close theory makes a lot of sense to me. The Mail app did a force close 2-3 times yesterday. if HTCIQ did a force close I was not notified.
MoDaCo 1.1 -> fresh 0.6 + optimized apk

All contacts disappeared

Maybe you guys can help me out here. This is the second time this has happened. All of the sudden, without warning, all my contacts are gone. I sent a text not 10 mins ago, at that point everybody who I'd texted had their names and photos next to the texts. Now, I'm left with just a bunch of numbers. I checked my "Contacts" app, and it's empty. It did the same thing about a week ago, but it was early and I had a Nandroid backup from the night before, so I only lost about two texts. My last backup is from two days ago, too much for me to restore back that far. Any idea a) WHY this would happen, as randomly as it did? and b) How to get back any contacts that might not transfer from a GMail/Facebook Sync? Would this be a problem with the phone, or something I did to the phone that would make it do this literally randomly?
I guess I'll throw in that I mainly use Handcent, have ChompSMS on here as well, and haven't used the default messaging app since I downloaded Handcent. I also am no longer able to sync Facebook it appears.
Also, contacts are the only thing missing. All other data is still there, along with all apps and even my homescreen layout is still intact.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Check your sync options. On a different device, I've had the Contacts come unchecked, and when the phone sync'd it erased them all
I checked everything after it happened, there were no changes. I didn't have it set up for Auto-sync either, so it shouldn't have just randomly synced to nothing. And that wouldn't explain why my phone and SIM contacts aren't accessible either.
Anyways, it happened again today. I noticed it right after I replied to a text using LauncherPro's new Messaging widget. I'm wondering if that's not the common factor in the three times that it's happened. If it happens again, it'll be getting unrooted, restored to stock and exchanged under warranty. The most intrusive thing I've done to this phone is try to get a lagfix to work (that didn't even work), and I doubt the side effects of that would include random contact deletion...

How can I see a log of system changes that have been made to my phone?

Recently my phone suddenly exhibited weird behavior which I remedied by running 'com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity'. You can see the exact problem and solution here.
Everything returned to normal and just the way it was before the problem started except for a few things that went back to default settings (e.g. I had to reenter wifi passwords).
But now I'm noticing something weird...
A couple of apps/services that I use have suspended and restricted my account. Reaching out to their customer service, one of them is saying it's due to using third party apps/tools, of which I haven't. The other says I violated their terms and conditions but are not saying which one.
Something triggered a security violation to warrant a suspension of my accounts. They are not saying what exactly. But putting two and two together, this is right after the problem with my phone.
Another weird thing that happened which is causing me to think that this is the reason I've been suspended is when I opened Titanium backup, there was a pop up message that said that my Android ID has been changed and if I'd like to return it to the previous ID.
Now I want to know what other changes have happened since running 'com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity' or since the problem started. How can I find out?

Keep re-receiving old texts, how do I make this stop?

Basically what happens is I get old texts from previous conversations as if they were new. They will come in randomly but tend to follow the sequence of the conversation, so it basically replays the conversation but slowly over the day. Seems to affect group chats more. It makes following conversations very hard since they are full of old texts that are not relevant but they show up as new. Also annoying to keep getting notifications when I'm actually waiting for a text only to see that it's an old text that I got days ago.
Current phone is Google Pixel 4A with CalyxOS, but I've also tried Graphene OS and had the same issue. I've tried the stock app as well as QKSMS. I did not get the issue with Signal (using as SMS client) but they dropped support for SMS, so this started back again as soon as I switched off Signal. I even tried putting the sim card in my old phone (stock android) and it's still doing it! This part is strange to me because when this problem first surfaced, doing this did fix the problem.
How do I make this stop or begin troubleshooting this? Nobody in my contacts is having this issue so trying to convince them to switch to another messaging system is kind of futile, this is my problem. I am starting to wonder if I should just get an iphone like everyone else because it just works, but I really hate the closed nature of apple ecosystem.
I was thinking of looking into how to do app development and modify an existing open source client so that it ignores texts that have a send date older than 24h, but before I do that, is there already a text client for Android available in the F droid store or as an APK that would have such a feature?
So this is not just group chats like I thought. Starting to get old texts I got from single conversations now. Even pictures get resent. These show up as new texts, though they still have the original send date. This will at least make it easier to filter these out.
Anyone have an ideas how to make this stop? Driving me insane. I really don't want to have to write my own app.
Anyone? This problem is driving me insane. It started happening with a vengeonce again. I am being bombarded by old texts that I already got days ago. It's just playing out the entire conversation over the course of a few days. Have to put the phone in airplane mode to make it stop otherwise the phone is just lit up non stop with old texts coming in.
At very least is there some kind of logging of sorts I can enable that would help me better troubleshoot this?
Inreally dont know but i Remember this happened to me sometime ,maybe Just try a factory reset or change rom , i dont know
I tried several roms, resets etc. While it was happening I even put the sim card in another phone and it started doing it on that phone too. It's also not a carrier issue since I'm the only person having this issue. I've also tried all sorts of text apps. The only one it didn't do it with was Signal but they dropped SMS support, which really sucks.
