Maybe you guys can help me out here. This is the second time this has happened. All of the sudden, without warning, all my contacts are gone. I sent a text not 10 mins ago, at that point everybody who I'd texted had their names and photos next to the texts. Now, I'm left with just a bunch of numbers. I checked my "Contacts" app, and it's empty. It did the same thing about a week ago, but it was early and I had a Nandroid backup from the night before, so I only lost about two texts. My last backup is from two days ago, too much for me to restore back that far. Any idea a) WHY this would happen, as randomly as it did? and b) How to get back any contacts that might not transfer from a GMail/Facebook Sync? Would this be a problem with the phone, or something I did to the phone that would make it do this literally randomly?
I guess I'll throw in that I mainly use Handcent, have ChompSMS on here as well, and haven't used the default messaging app since I downloaded Handcent. I also am no longer able to sync Facebook it appears.
Also, contacts are the only thing missing. All other data is still there, along with all apps and even my homescreen layout is still intact.

Check your sync options. On a different device, I've had the Contacts come unchecked, and when the phone sync'd it erased them all
I checked everything after it happened, there were no changes. I didn't have it set up for Auto-sync either, so it shouldn't have just randomly synced to nothing. And that wouldn't explain why my phone and SIM contacts aren't accessible either.
Anyways, it happened again today. I noticed it right after I replied to a text using LauncherPro's new Messaging widget. I'm wondering if that's not the common factor in the three times that it's happened. If it happens again, it'll be getting unrooted, restored to stock and exchanged under warranty. The most intrusive thing I've done to this phone is try to get a lagfix to work (that didn't even work), and I doubt the side effects of that would include random contact deletion...

Well.. I seemed to have somehow solved my SMS bug accidentally. I was suffering from it from day 1 when I restored my 2000+ messages. I gave up on trying to tweak it, and decided to concentrate on moving my picture MMSes over from my Diamond.
(along the way I concluded none of the backup softwares can really work with picture MMSes.. but that's another story.)
I'll state upfront I don't really know what I did that fixed the problem, but I'm very sure the problem of SMS stuck in the outbox is fixed, I seem to get all my SMSes and only my msg threads with more than 300 msgs take a while (3s - 5s?) to load.
The interface loads EVERY single msg. Doesn't anyone at HTC use MSN?
Here's what I did when I gave up with the MMSes. Something along the way solved the problem. Or maybe I got lucky.
1) deleted the messages that were previously MMSes in both inbox and sent box.
Every single one.
Didn't study much, but I realised through testing, my restored MMSes were causing some problems. In traditional mode, I could not reply to a single restored MMS, but a single restored SMS was fine. In conversation mode, conversations with restored MMSes had a lag, while those with only SMS didn't. The sent/received fields also seem screwed up somehow.
Furthermore, none of the softwares I tried using to restore couldn't bring my picture MMSes back to life. (sentimental value, else I'll just save the images)
That's why I decided to just kill all of them for now. I used Jeyo Mobile to delete those "former-MMSes" from my HD2.
2) Exited Sense by removing it from Today
BTW, this was fresh from a Hard Reset, so there's nothing else in the system.
3) Using Jeyo Mobile, deleted the (previously unseen) folder Conversations from the sms inbox
Don't know why, I keep seeing it reappear. Seems to cause problems when it's not properly indexed. the UI seems to duplicate the latest msg from each contact into it, and that'll be the start of the threads.
3) Clear the deleted items folder using Jeyo
Including manually deleting the Conversations folder that was stuck in it.
4) Back up the SMSes
I had no email, nothing in draft as the UI doesn't index them properly. Only left stuff in Inbox and Sent. I used Jeyo Mobile Companion 2.1. Feel free to try others.
5) Hard Reset
6) Restore the SMSes
Here's where it's hazy again. I might have tried alot of combis, as the UI doesn't index the msgs properly for conversations all the time. Idea was to restore and let the UI index it properly. Here's the possible permutations:
a) I might have exited Sense.
b) I might have left the HTC msging interface in traditional
c) I might have left the HTC msging interface in conversation
Chances are, it's in conversation.
I restored the msgs using Jeyo. (it's stored in a XML file, so other text based backups may work too)
-------------------------------------
I only realised that the problem is fixed a few days later, as I realised that the next few days, I got my SMS reports instantly, and I never had a SMS stuck. My newly received and sent MMSes worked perfectly too.
I'm trying not to touch that msging part of my phone now that it is working perfectly....
Just found out that HD2 I bought (at the same time) for my GF is suffering the sent/huge lag issue though. Maybe I'll try to pin point a fix using her phone. She shld have less than 50 messages, though I did back up and restore some mmses for her previously.
However as I'm about to go on a 19day tour/holiday, so I thought I'll just share my experience and maybe some experts can figure out what's wrong.
Just for your info, I'm using 1.48.707.2 (71294) WWE.

Try a factory reset. It was taking SO long to push some emails from an account that is relatively empty so I just had about enough of that and decided to do a reset and everything is peachy. Instantly the emails started to load up into the inbox and 5 seconds later it was done.. Amazing!

I have the same problem. Any other than a factory reset? because reinstalling everyting and reconfigure all my phone that's a bummer.

I agree. Got a weeks worth of time invested in getting this thing set up and programs installed (and paid for).
Mine too doesnt do anything until I go into the mail program. It wont even save my changes I make in the email settings. I set mine to automatic, so they arrive as soon as i get an email, but it keeps going back to the 15 and 30 minute settings. This is my only issue with the phone.
Can someone who has done a hard reset try saving their settings to automatic, go into task killer , kill the email program and go back into email and see if it saved??
Instead of using the "email" program I use the "gmail" built in program and I get instant emails. But then again, I use gmail.
Same here. I use gmail for my personal account but for work I use the regular mail app on the phone. I also set up gmail on that app as well. The actual gmail app works great but my gmail account in the regular mail app doesn't--it will tell me I have gmail mail a couple hours after I have already looked at it in the gmail app and marked as read. Same thing with the work mail, things show up much later then they should.
Haven't found a way to fix it yet.
Are you guys using a task killer? If so and the email program is not ignored, the task killer will close the email app...which at that point is running services to retrieve your email.
In the same boat. I have both GMail and the Email program. Gmail is of course instant, however the built in email is horrible (at least with Exchange). I'm not killing it with taskkiller, and I've deleted and reset it up multiple times. I installed Touchdown and gave it a try, however it really didn't seem to make a huge difference. Unfortunately I think it's something we are going to have to endure until 2.2, which supposedly has Active Synch improvements.
I don't have experience with Exchange but really, a reset will speed up a lot of the loading screen "lag". That's the only thing that will.

And after the reset do you use a restore of titanium backup or do you have to do all resinstall manually and re-configure everything (like home screeens and apps)
The issue isn't so much loading screen lag, it's a long period of waiting to do anything (open, reply, delete) when navigation in the program. I'm assuming (more like guessing) that other phones simply make everything appear to happen instantly, and then perform the tasks in the background unlike on Android where everything is done real time.
For instance on my Blackberry and iPhone when I selected 5 emails and chose delete, all 5 would disappear and I could continue working. In Email I select the 5 messages, the program says Messages Deleted then I watch for 5 to 10 seconds as the messages are deleted one at a time, preventing any meaningful use of the program until the process completes. I've checked the Exchange logs, no errors or anything out of the ordinary. It works, just very slowly.
I had the same problem, but K9 instead. After a _lot_ of testing, gnashing of teeth, and pulling of hair, I think I've found the cause.
Email and K9 both appear to store stuff in the /data dir. This is the exact same location that others online have found to be drag-ass slow and the general cause for black screens and/or lag in general. Which pretty much describes exactly what was happening to me with Email and K9. Search here or at MoDaCo for more info on the lag issue.
The solution is to either hope Samsung can somehow fix the speed of the internal SD card or store data elsewhere. I'd be amazed if Samsung ever fixes the speed issue. And storing data elsewhere isn't an option build into either application. K9 might eventually have that feature added, but I doubt Email ever will. There's a potential fix shown at MoDaCo, but it involves rooting, updating the kernel, and partitioning an external SD card. Nothing difficult, but not for everybody.
Touchdown has an option to store data on the external SD card, so it shouldn't suffer the same problem. I haven't played with it yet to see if it does or not.
As for why Gmail seems to work ok, that's a little trickier. It stores under the same path as the others, but it appears to work in an asynchronus mode, relying more on what you have on the server and only checking the local copy if it can't hit the network. At least that's the best explanation I can come up with for why it seems to work much better than Email or K9.
I was using the Nexus One 2.2, with 2 different Exchange syncs and gmail... NO Problem at all.
Different story with the Captivate... Not rooted, with ATT bloat... hardly any other apps loaded, tried both popular loaders. The email is all most unbearable (and unacceptable), reminds me of the iPhone 3g, if not worse.
Hopefully we'll see a straight 2.2 build soon, or I'm really considering returning the phone (already sold my N1 for a chunk of change).. I have 27 days remaining for a return.
Stock 2.2 is the only way to go.
I'd love a stock 2.2 build! But... unless we get lucky with a major change in the driver for the internal (non-sd) filesystem, I don't think it's going to help with the e-mail issue (or the general lag/blackscreen issue) at all.
It's definately not the at&t bloat, I have mine rooted and all of the at&t apps removed. I definately think the data parition fx is the best route to persue.

You haven't tried a reset? The Email app syncs my GMail account quickly for me, however before I did a reset it was loading in my emails one at a time and was noticeably poor.
Woke up today, went to my call history and noticed that it didn't list any names. Instead it had everyones phone number. When I clicked a number to dial, it showed their name. So I reset the phone, numbers still showed. I cleared the list, and dialed a new person. Everything back to normal.
Then, when trying to call someone later on today, I noticed something else. All the links that I had made (Live + Facebook contact) were unlinked.
Anyone have a clue why this happened, or has anyone else experienced it? I hate having to relink everyone again.
Glad to know I'm not the only one that had this happen
Went thru the same process of rebooting & pulled the battery
The call history just mysteriously lost all association to the names?
New calls are showing up ok
I'm guessing that some AT&T system reset is the culprit

+1 on this bit.
I've noticed that very occasionally those contacts whose name doesn't exactly match their Facebook accounts become unlinked and I have to re-link them. I have no idea why that happens and have never been able to attribute a cause.
Although not the same, I am having a problem with my contact pics on the People tile on the homescreen. It looks as though all the pics I added myself are showing up as blue squares , Facebook pics are showing up ok. When I go into my contact list all pics show up correctly.
This happened to me too once, I figured it was just a bug... That and the call history being delayed at times... Calls won't show up for a few minutes randomly... Had only happened about two or three times.
I had the same problem last night, too.
I guess that it is the problem came from Hotmail server. It was corrupt when syncing and then all my contacts were reset and sync again. It made Live contacts and linked-facebook contacts unlink...
Cmon MS, hotmail must be stable like rock or user will have this problem again
HAd same Problem
Just about a hour ago all my contacts unlinked and i als lost all my home screen contacts they just vannished from my home screen.
Did not encounter this issue but I do agree MS should improve the live mail service...
At least make contact editing as good as gmail...
i also encountered this waking up this morning.
Are any of you guys using Micro-SD cards? That could possibly be the cause of the problem
i am on a trophy, so yes, it's built into the phone with a micro SD. given the amount of people who all experienced this at about the same time, i would say it would be something to do with the server.

I have the phone over a month and not having this problem so far until yesterday... So I dont think it is the SD Card problem...
/I have a HD7
About 2 minutes after my first post I noticed that this exact problem had happened to me (my gf had called, and in the call history it simply listed her number and not her name). I remembered that last night while configuring my email settings, under my windows live account it said "not synced" or something like that. Naturally, I did a long press and hit "sync." When it synced, it must have for some reason set everything back to default. This was probably the cause of my problem; I agree it must be some sort of Hotmail/Windows Live sync issue.
Happened to me too, 4x already. My Samsung Focus Windows Live contact becomes unlinked with my previously linked facebook contacts everytime i will sync in hotmail tile. I am annoyed as I have to linked my facebook contact with windows live contacts everytime. Do you have any idea why is this so?
Could someone send this feedback to MS?... Cause my English is not good enough...
I'm on the Omnia 7, bought it especially not to have microSD problems. And seeing how it all happened in this past day, it's gotta be a Windows Live problem. Unless we all installed the same person
It's kinda freaky, Microsoft being in total control, they could just brick all our phones overnight while we sleep.
Throw my hat in the ring too...all contacts in calls list appear as phone number and all contacts/facebook links unlinked. Not too big of a deal but kinda weird.
Happened to me too over the weekend. HD7 with original SD card. Lost my contact tiles from my start screen, lost all links between contacts and facebook friends where the names weren't the same.
If this happens again I'm going to change all my contact names to match the facebook names so they match themselves up, because doing it manually is a pain.

I had exactly the same problem for the first time yesterday. Weird.
Add me to the list. Also emails I deleted on my Hotmail inbox are still showing up on the phone.
Ever since the ICS upgrade, one contact's message thread refuses to open and is stuck on "O Loading" with that little circle revolving.
I downloaded go sms pro before and I was able to access his thread through that and the message count wasn't over the maximum limit per contact. I've since gone back to the stock app as he's out of the country and it's faster than go sms pro but he recently txted me and caused the problem to occur with other contacts (though a reset of the phone solves their issue)
Does anyone have a solution and failing that, advice? I should say right now that deleting his message thread is the last resort.

You could try to backup your messages (you can find some apps for that in the market), then delete all your contacts, and afterwards restore them again~
Though no idea if it will work :/

Aye I could try it with a contact whose messages I don't mind losing and seeing if that works, thanks for the tip!
You can also use Google Voice, and have it copy all the messages to your Gmail account.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
So I started backing up and restoring and I was able to open all contacts' threads. The backup never fully restores all messages though and I have to keep hitting "restore" so that it'll restore them all up to the present day. Don't know why it's doing it this way.
Just now I've checked and that one contact won't open again. What I might do is try and restore all to the present, delete loads of messages I don't want, and backup this new message history.
I know this is most likely far too late but I was having the same problems and found this thread while trying to sort it and hope it will help anyone else in future who has the same problems. I tried backing up and restoring (Using both the default and sms back-up and restore) deleting the thread and restoring, eventually I solved it by installing handscent, deleting the messages sent/received back to when the problem started in that thread and a few before, then went in settings, apps, then all, messages cleared the cache, restarted and it is sorted!!

Yeah it never resolved itself but I love the customisation of go sms pro so much that I don't mind anymore. Pity go sms pro crashes every so often and I think it slows the phone down.
I was going to start a new thread but see that this is the same problem I have.
I have a mt4gs (Doubleshot) and the problem described in this thread has happened twice. Both times i was receiving a text message and did something else with the phone at the same moment, and it seems to have jammed up the receipt of that text. The first time, i sent a text to the person at the same moment i received one. The second time, i locked the screen at the moment one arrived. Now that thread never loads, and loading other threads or contacts takes much longer than it should. In fact, i don't think contacts would ever load if i were willing to wait forever.
The first time I backed up the texts, reset the device, and restored, and everything worked fine, but that's a really time-consuming process and it seems like a ridiculous workaround for some broken buffer or queue in Android messaging.
It seems that there must be a direct fix for this. If it's easy enough to break messaging that it has happened to me twice, it must be a fairly common problem. But a search has turned up nothing but people saying there are too many messages or to use an alternative app for messaging. That's (1) incorrect and (2) again an ugly workaround for a problem with core functionality.
Starting off, I am completely new to rooting and this forum all together so if I use a word that is just completely wrong, let me know haha. So today I rooted my phone and put the Synergy ROM on it. It worked out all fine and I got all my apps back and my contacts. Today, I was at work, not using my phone at all but when I finished work and was calling my buddy, I realized it deleted all my contacts. Not mad, I realized they were all my facebook ones so I just re-synced and they came back. Unfortunately, others were missing as well, some that were saved on my phone. Confused, I tried re-syncing with Google to retrieve them but no luck. I also tried getting them from a back up. I accept them being gone but now, my facebook does not want to sync the pictures for my contacts like previously. I am wondering what happened and how should I go about fixing this? Is it something that just happens on occasion or was mine just a freak accident?
its most likly a glitch with facebook
