Hi guys,
I want to root my nexus 5 to get access to the root applications available but I am afraid of the repercussions of rooting. First of all, I want to keep my phone stock because I really like my phone the way it is. Pure android. So installing a custom rom is out of the question for me.
Here are some of my questions
1) Does rooting delete all current apps I have ?
2) Would I still be able to install OTA update from google after rooting?
3) Is the unroot process just as easy as rooting ?
Thanks in advance !
Hi,
1) [GUIDE] Nexus 5 - How to Unlock Bootloader, Install Custom Recovery and Root.
2) [INFO] Nexus 5 OTA Help-Desk.
3) [TUTORIAL] How to flash a factory image | Return to stock | Unroot your Nexus 5.
And additional reading: [HOW-TO] The Nexus 5 All-In-One Beginner's Guide...
All you need is in in the threads above, read closely and take your time. Rooting your device does not require you obviously to install a custom rom.

To backup use total commander with http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/android_adb.html. when you restore your data make sure you redownloaded the purshed apps since adb backup can't backup purshed apps' .apk files.

1) yes because you will be unlocking the bootloader. I recommend helium for backup purposes
2) There is an OTA help desk, it is not like updates come out that often, you can always just flash a stock ROM that is deodexed with the latest android.
3) Yes
If ever you should unroot don`t forget to flash the zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239421 to reset the `tampered flag`and lock the bootloader after you flashed the factory image.
I rooted for the same reason as you. IMO there is no longer need for custom roms. It's not like the days of ics etc. Kk is great as it is. Once you do root though it's hard not to want to wipe all the bloat apps out and put a good kernel in. Just make a full nandroid back up. You can't go wrong reading the above and google kindly provided the factory images. But read read read then make a cup of tea and read some more!

Hello. Well i got a Galaxy S2 and think of doing one step forward, but first i would
like to clear a few things in my mind. So here are my questions.
1) I read about secure and insecure kernels. What is the difference ? That on a secure kernel
the user has no root access while on an insecure the user has full access to the entire system ?
2) What is an insecure/original kernel ? Are those give to public by Samsung, therefor
called original ?
3) Lets asume i want to make that step and root my phone with Odin. What kernel do
i choose ? There are so many available online. I download just any? I have to take
into consideration the current kernel and firmware i have on my phone right now?
I see on xda GT-I9100_BOKE3_insecure,GT-I9100_BOKE3_insecure, GT-I9100_BOKG2_insecure
and many others. How do i know which one i need ?
4) It looks that Odin and adding a new kernel is not enough to root. There are applications
like SuperOneClick, that root the device, but what is the point in adding a new kernel.
5) After rooting, do i have to be careful installing any kind of applications? I mean
i dont want applications to be installed and not to be able to remove them in case i would
unroot my mobile.
6) Let's say i've done my job (changing some configuration files) and there is no reason
for me to have my phone root anymore. I just unroot it with SuperOneClick. But what happens
with the kernel and firmware? How to i reset them to default ? Again how do i know which
kernel or firmware i have to install again. Is there any topic for that in our forum?
7) Another topic is Samsung updates. Right now, if there is an available update, i get informed by
Kies. After rooting and adding a new kernel, will i still get notifications or i will
have to do all the updates manualy ?
8) As last, after rooting is it possible to get it 100% back to the stage where it was before rooting the device?
Thank you in advance.
Hi All,
I have the above and was thinking of rooting it but have some questions.
1/. If i root the phone do i also have to unlock the bootloader or is unlocking the bootloader only if i want to install a custom rom?
2/. If i only root the phone how can i make a backup of it in case i need to restore it to factory settings?
3/. Can someone recommened a custom rom and it features? I read alot about cleanrom.
4/. I also read about CM9 what does this do?
5/. One click unlock is that ok to use?
6/. What is the main difference when 1 roots there phone against not doing it? Does it change anything when installing? Does it give me extra abilitys with the phone?
Thanks in advance.
1/. If i root the phone do i also have to unlock the bootloader or is unlocking the bootloader only if i want to install a custom rom?
No you do not have to unlock the bootloader unless you want to install custom roms or recovery
2/. If i only root the phone how can i make a backup of it in case i need to restore it to factory settings?
You can you use an app like titanium back up to back up apps and data
If you unlock your bootloader you can install a custom recovery and create a nandroid back up which you can restore your phone to in the event of a problem
3/. Can someone recommened a custom rom and it features? I read alot about cleanrom.
This I really a matter of preference
4/. I also read about CM9 what does this do?
Cm 9 is close to vanilla android with some extra goodies like themes to name one
5/. One click unlock is that ok to use?
Should be fine just make sure to use the one that matches your current software ie 1.73 or 1.85
6/. What is the main difference when 1 roots there phone against not doing it? Does it change anything when installing? Does it give me extra abilitys with the phone?
Root in short gives permission to access and modify things in the system of your phone ie read and write privileges
Hope this helps

1. You only need to unlock the bootloader if you want to install a custom recovery and rom
2. You can use an RUU for that, otherwise you need to unlock your bootloader and install a custom recovery in order to make backups (like restorable system snapshots)
3. The 3 versions of CleanROM are pretty good. Very stable and I'd say that all the features work that are supposed to. CM9 and AOKP are still in alpha at the moment and not everything works quite right. I can't speak for any other roms but I'm sure they're in the same boat as CleanROM
4. CM9 is a custom rom based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project). It's completely stock android but with lots of new features and tweaks. Right now it's in its 4th alpha. From what I've seen it's usable as a daily driver but there are still a lot of kinks to work out.
5. Yes
6. Rooting the phones gives you (and apps that you allow) access to the root file system of the phone. You can install custom bootanimations, remove carrier bloat, and do lots of other things that you wouldn't normally be able to do. I'm not gonna go over everything because that would take awhile
Thanks heaps for that.
Now just need a good place to get games for my HTC One Xl.
btw how does 1 say thanks without replying?
I am thinking of rooting my note 10.1 (GT-N8010). I understand how to root it, since I have read through a few threads about that, but my question is about when, or IF, I'd want to return the software to stock. I have never done this before, so I need practically all help and tips regarding reversing the rooting.
1. What must I do BEFORE rooting the tablet?
2. After I have rooted it and installed a rom, How do I unroot the tablet and install stock android?
Again, I need all tips and please don't use abbreviations. Thank you

If you make a nandroid backup right after you install your custom recovery going back to stock is as easy as flashing the nandriod any time you want to go back.Alternatively, you could download the stock rom from http://www.sammobile.com and flash the md5 file in odin to get back to stock.Read up on this stuff in the 10.1 general and development forum threads because there is way too much information to type it all in this post. You will find everything you need to know in these threads including walk through videos.
Hi, my name is Anthony and I have a T-Mobile S5 running the latest version of android (I think it's 5.0.1 or 5.0). I'm kinda a newb with flashing and rooting. I had my phone rooted using towel root a while ago, but I lost that root in an update and it is no longer supportive of my phone.
I'm looking to install custom roms but before I do so, I would like to make a full backup of my current stock touch wiz so I can revert to it in case I don't like the new rom. I also would like to root my phone. Oh, and before anyone tells me that I need to install Odin, I have a Mac running Yosemite.... A lot of people have told me that I need to install clock work in order for this whole process to work.
Recap:
1. Make backup rom
2. Root phone
3. Teach me how to flash roms using a Mac.
4. Include any other important info and links for downloads.
I mainly want to install CM12, but I still want a backup rom to revert to later
Thanks, and please don't post any hate
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. Some pro tips, figure out how to use Odin. You'll need it eventually if you want to root and flash roms. Either in a Windows vm or heimdall. If something goes wrong you'll need to flash the stock firmware.
There's a whole forum for your device,http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5. And the best place to ask your specific question is here,http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/help

I'm trying to backup my Nexus 4 and then install Cyanogenmod. I am a complete beginner to all this, and I have never had anything other than Stock Android on my phone - it is 100% stock and has never been rooted or anything. So I really have no clue about it.
I have googled a bit, and it's confusing, because most articles about this phone are 2-3 years old and I'm not sure how it is nowadays. I did find this program on the PC called "Nexus Root Toolkit", which I guess I should be using? I've seen somewhere, that I need to create a backup of my stock phone (Android 5.1.1), before I attempt to do anything. However, if I click "Create Nandroid Backup w/ Custom Recovery" on Nexus Root Toolkit, it says my device needs to be "unlocked", but if I want to unlock it using this Toolkit, it says, unlocking will wipe my data. So I'm completely confused about what to do now.
Is there maybe a current guide (at least for Lollipop) on the Nexus 4, that explains EVERYTHING from backup to flashing the ROM, step by step, for someone who's never done this before? Or could someone help me out here? Thanks a lot!
