[Q]pay at&t for tethering? not if I can help it! - General Questions and Answers

Can anyone help me? Got an email yesterday from AT&T warning me to stop tethering (free), or else. My note 2 is rooted and running Scott's Rom's Clean Rom Ace 5.0. ? I was tethering with portable wi-fi hot spot app. Using about 8 gig per month.
My question is, since they have figured out that I have been tethering with this tethering app, should I have been using the hot spot toggle that is in the custom rom instead? Or would that make no difference. So, can anyone tell me if there is a way to continue to free tether without at&t finding out? I have a grandfathered in unlimited data plan and don't want to loose it. They tell me I have till the end of the month to stop tethering . If I dont, they will automatically enroll me in there fifty dollar for 5 gig plan. No way I'm going to let that happen. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

[Q] AT&T Teathering...

So anyone understand what this article is talking about?
http://www.softwaredownloadsguide.com/2011/02/htc-inspire-4g-htc-inspire-4g-on-att-release-date/
Here is the part I am curious about:
AT&T will charge monthly data plans for the HTC Inspire 4G will price $15 for 200MB of data and $25 per month for 2GB data plan. Data can be use through Hotspot capacity from Datapro Tethering plan for the user data allowance. HTC Inspire 4G will be available on AT&T stores and online from 13th February at price $99.99 with two years contract.

So does this mean that people with unlimited plans at $30 a month should be ok to tether their laptops via wifi?
No, you need a data pro plan with tethering. $45 for 4gb of data.
so i wonder if there will be a way around that cause i currently have a unlimited data plan and really don't want to pay for the tethering plan (have been using WMWifirouter for WM 6.5). Any ideas to help me out being a cheepskate!?

PDA.Net is an option since you have an unlimited plan.
once we get root (assuming we do) are there other tethering options (you will have to pardon me as i am still new to android). When i did searches there is some material on the subject but from what i understand the phone has to be rooted for these to work.

Yes once you root your phone you will have other options to choose from such as Android Wifi tether.
thanks.. now if the predictions continue at the same rate of what i continue to read the phone will be rooted before i ever get it home from the store
PDA.net is wired tethering, not a wifi hotspot
Ya I have the $30 unlimited data with AT&T. Using the HD2 Australian version (android OS) I am able to use the Wi-Fi Hotspot app, only problem is where I live they don't use 850 for 3G so I only have EDGE. I am really looking forward to what can be done with the Inspire, because having such an amazing phone kind of sucks with such slow data speeds.
This is something I am very interested in also. I am assuming the wifi tethering that ATT is talking about it the MobileAP that is already present on damn near every 2.2 rom. I heard that they are going to have a setting that will let ATT control whether your INSPIRE 4g will be able to use this feature. I am on the unlimited plan now with my craptivate and was just thinking about buying it off contract and dropping my sim in. does anyone think that this might be an issue?
My only worry is that ATT tries to screw you in almost every way possible if they think they can make more money off you. Technically we shouldn't have to pay for tethering IMHO we are already paying for the data why should it matter how or on what device we use it on??

I agree, although it seems like once they get it rooted we will be able to put our own tethering app on it and avoid having to pay for a ridiculous plan. I used WMWiFi Router on my incite and HTC's tethering on the windows mobile HD2 and now the WiFi Hotspot app on Android on the HD2 all on ATT with an unlimited data plan without tethering.

G2X Portable Wi-Fi hotspot

Not getting any ip on Portable Wi-Fi hotspot. Tried NC & laptop as wifi clients.
Have seen some talk about requiring some special package to do this?
Can't wait for CM.
plan: T-Mobile Android Unlimited Web + Unlimited Messages
Any thoughts?
go Canucks!
Why posting in development?. Thread moved. Please post in the correct forum.
No disrespect.....but this should probably go in the general section....
wrong forum - dev to gen
sorry, my bad.
wasn't sure how to move from-->to.
thanks for move.
no any extra package needed. works well with other iphone / G2x / ipod / laptop.
plan : family plan + $30 4G internet.
Can someone else chime in with some help on this? My mobile hotspot doesn't function either, nor does it make it so the SSID isn't broadcast, which I hate. Is there an app that can help with this? Thanks in advance, this phone has had a surprising number of headaches since I've gotten it.
opengarden wifi tether will do the trick
do I really want to root my device? whats the benefit? = jailbreaking iphones?
Benefit is apps that save battery, free wifi tether and cm7

G2X Mobile Hotspot
When I first bought my G2x, and it was not rooted, I had problems with the wifi hotspot feature. I think this is because T-Mobile has a 14.99 tethering fee which applies to the wifi hotspot as well. Once I rooted the phone I've had no trouble at all with the hotspot. Connects my laptop, ereaders, and my new Iconia Tab with 0 problems. Looks like you can pony up the extra cash per month or take 30 seconds to root the phone. I'm not advocating either course of action here, but if you weigh those options...
Hope this helps!
Thanks for reply. Yes, am rooted, should have mentioned that.
Not deeply troubled by it, as CM should definitively solve it when ROM drops.
Have tried 3.0-pre14 ***EXPERIMENTAL*** from android-wifi-tether.googlecode to no avail.
Will keep futzing with it based on suggestions.

Is there any way to tether past your data limit for free somehow?

Two-part question I suppose:
Is there any way to wirelessly tether past your monthly data limit without paying data overages? My phone is rooted and I have unlimited data and tether every day all the time with no problems at all.....but my friend has an unrooted, pure stock S3 with a 2gb data limit AND I am told that her father has her line set to shut off her data usage at 10:30p every night, so data won't work.
I can show her how to root, unlock bootloader, flash roms, and tether, but it is kinda pointless unless somehow she can get free data/avoid the overage charges past 2gb...is there any way around this? And also, whether it be tethering or just using data on her phone, how does one use data past 10:30p? Any way around that?
An answer or idea to either problem would be a big help, thanks!
I do not think there is a way to do it from yourside. Data goes through their towers and servers and it is logged there.
Unfortunately the answer is no for both of your questions.
Being unlocked and rooted will allow you to tether for free. But you're going to burn data anytime you're on the 3g/4g network. That's why do many of us opt to stay on unlimited.
As for using data past 10:30, that's your friend's dad exerting parental guidance - I'm assuming your friend's phone is on his account.

Ha. I'm glad my daughter is not quite old enough to have friends like this!
Unlimited is the way to go if you want this sort of freedom, 2Gb is 2Gb.
10:30 seems like a reasonable bed time.
Your friend is kind of stuck.... needs to utilize wifi as much as possible at home etc to conserve the 2gb for when its needed. Let them tether to you and use your unlimited when you're around.
I let a couple of poor ATT saps at work tether to me so they can stream pandora at work all day without blowing their 2gb loads.
Thanks guys for your advice. I know by being rooted/unlocked one can tether for free (where "free" means not paying Vzw the $20/mon for hotspot) because I do that everyday, I just wasn't sure whether there was some way to tether past your data limit/somehow fool verizon into thinking you had unlimited data.

[Q] Hot spot/tethering

Hello guys,
If this thread is in the wrong place then I do apologise, anyway...
I have a Nexus 7 and I want to be able to connect to the internet when I am not in a Wi-Fi area. To do this I use the hotspot feature on my iPhone. Does anyone know if this costs money?
Thanks in advanced
Rob
Like Sewrizer said you should call your carrier and check with them. I also heard of apps that will allow you to hide the fact that you are tethering... but not sure how effective that is.
For me I'm on an unlimited plan and the carrier doesn't care if I tether or not. I never understood why carriers charge more for tethering anyways, especially for limited plans. If I'm paying for a 10 GB plan, then I should be able to use that 10 GB however I want!

Sprint Nexus 5 and Wifi-tethering

I've searched around and wasn't able to find legitimate info on the subject - plus most of it was months old so I wasn't sure how to trust it.
Just trying to clear some things up.
If I want to get mobile hotspot for free, will rooting do the trick? Or does it still charge me because the Nexus comes unlocked? I've seen that it will instead take the data from your unlimited plan rather than charge you per/whatever for using hotspot without buying it.
Anyway, if someone can clear this up for me I'd appreciate it!
TL;DR, if I root, can I get hotspot for free or does it still charge?

rooting has nothing to do with your hotspots. all root does is give you permission to access system level files(and change them). sprint sees when you are on their network, as soon as your phone connects to it, for regular data use and as a hotspot. if you have an unlimited data plan with them, and they dont charge extra to use your phone as a hotspot, then cool. i know that tmobile doesnt charge for hotspots, unless you have unlimited high spped data. then they limit your hotspot usage to 2.5gb for free, then charge you if you want more usage.
Are you sure? I saw people in this thread talking about some work around - people saying that rooting and such would let you use the mobile hotspot for free and that it would take data from your unlimited data plan rather than charging you for using data on your hotspot. http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/nexus-5-sprint-tether-hotspot-t2509613/page10
I thought all paying for hotspot did was unlock it (on Sprint at least) and all data used would just come from your unlimited data.
Depends on the ROM. Stock you need to add tethering_dun_required with value of 0 to providers.settings SQL global database. Search and you'll find more info about this. But custom ROMs such as Liquid and Slim don't need it and tethering with Sprint works right away.

I only have experience with Sprint. I have an unlimited plan and I would still need to pay another $10 for them to "activate" WiFi tethering. Luckily if you are rooted you can do it yourself. Just follow the directions, it works great. You do not have to transfer any files to/from your computer if you buy a sqlite editor from the play store...

You answered your own question.
The link I posted is the OP of that thread. Just buy the sqlite editor on the play store, it is worth it.
