G2X Portable Wi-Fi hotspot - T-Mobile LG G2x

Not getting any ip on Portable Wi-Fi hotspot. Tried NC & laptop as wifi clients.
Have seen some talk about requiring some special package to do this?
Can't wait for CM.
plan: T-Mobile Android Unlimited Web + Unlimited Messages
Any thoughts?
go Canucks!

Why posting in development?. Thread moved. Please post in the correct forum.

No disrespect.....but this should probably go in the general section....

sorry, my bad.
wasn't sure how to move from-->to.
thanks for move.

no any extra package needed. works well with other iphone / G2x / ipod / laptop.
plan : family plan + $30 4G internet.

Can someone else chime in with some help on this? My mobile hotspot doesn't function either, nor does it make it so the SSID isn't broadcast, which I hate. Is there an app that can help with this? Thanks in advance, this phone has had a surprising number of headaches since I've gotten it.

opengarden wifi tether will do the trick

do I really want to root my device? whats the benefit? = jailbreaking iphones?

Benefit is apps that save battery, free wifi tether and cm7

G2X Mobile Hotspot
When I first bought my G2x, and it was not rooted, I had problems with the wifi hotspot feature. I think this is because T-Mobile has a 14.99 tethering fee which applies to the wifi hotspot as well. Once I rooted the phone I've had no trouble at all with the hotspot. Connects my laptop, ereaders, and my new Iconia Tab with 0 problems. Looks like you can pony up the extra cash per month or take 30 seconds to root the phone. I'm not advocating either course of action here, but if you weigh those options...
Hope this helps!

Thanks for reply. Yes, am rooted, should have mentioned that.
Not deeply troubled by it, as CM should definitively solve it when ROM drops.
Have tried 3.0-pre14 ***EXPERIMENTAL*** from android-wifi-tether.googlecode to no avail.
Will keep futzing with it based on suggestions.

[Q] Teathering and Wifi Extra T-Mobile?

I use my Touch Pro 2 to share internet with my laptop and I dont pay any extra for it with my current t-mobile plan. I avg about 200-250kb per second downloads (pretty decent) and when teathered with my gaming pc I play Battleground Europe online and get an avg ping time of 150ms so its great but t-mobile is telling me I will have to pay an additional $15 per month to teather with the G2x which I dont want to do since I dont have to now for internet. I'm using a custom Energy Windows Mobile 6.5 rom currently and it also works great with bluetooth internet sharing so I dont even need to teather using my bluetooth adapter on my laptop. Is there anyway to have the same data teathering with the G2x without having to pay the extra $15 per month to t-mobile? Is this just a matter of installing the necessary applications to make that work as it does on my Touch Pro 2?
Not sure this adds too much to the conversation but I had been able to tether with my Vibrant for free until a couple weeks ago when I got a text advising I would need to purchase the plan, the next time I tethered it blocked tethering, I think this is happnening to all ther phones now that they offer a tethering plan. Would be interested in hearing if there is a work around though, I may use mine 1x a month for a limited amount of data so I can't justify the extra $15.
I did some searching and found this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840539&highlight=t-mobile+teather&page=15
Sorry should have searched before posting. Plenty of information on this issue. But since I am eyeballing the G2x as my next phone and have very little experience with Android phones I would like to know if anyone that has this phone is teathering with it with no issues and of course not paying the additional $15 fee.
from what i have found is if you use the default tethering in the options you will see this happen. I have been using the Wifi Tether app http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ and have yet to see a problem. I used with my N1 as well as with my G2X right now and haven't got a text yet.
I've been tethering for the past year using Easy Tether with no problems. If they end up catching me I'll just do one of the many work arounds.

Good to know. Thanks for the info.
I think it's extra just for Tethering. I think HotSpot is included with Data plan. At least that's what the T-Mobile Website says.

USB Tethering

Hey guys,
I am from the Captivate forums and I was wondering if the roms for the droid charge have usb tethering and mobile hotpsot enabled out of the box with the current custom roms. I know Verizon is providing their mobile hotspot capabilities for a short term but I would really like to get some tethered 4G speeds without having to pay for separate hotspot capabilities.
I'm running GummyCharged 1.8.1 with the pbj lagfix kernel, and while there is not exactly a built in tethering app I was able to easily install PdaNet for usb tethering. I also downloaded Open Garden WiFi for my mobile hotspot alternative app which seems to work well. Verizon's built in tethering garbage is just plain ridiculously overpriced.

You thinking about jumping from att to verizon for the LTE lock in? That's exactly what I'm planning on doing either today or tomorrow. Don't you just love how easy it is to usb or wireless tether with our Captivates and custom roms?!
To USB tether, you can purchase EZ Tether (~ $10USD), or you can root and run this free app: Google Code Wired Tether
For Wireless Tethering, it's a little trickier - mostly because of the Wifi Access Point / Ad Hoc connection issue. I have heard that if you download this free app: Google Code Wifi Tether, and configure for the Samsung Fascinate, it will work fine. Haven't tested it yet, though.
Cheers,

Yeah that is exactly what I feel like doing, but I will probably keep my Captivate activated just in case because I still have AT&ts unlimited data plan. Yeah that is the reason I was asking becasue everything is baked into our custom roms and they inlcude all of the mods anyone could ever ask for.
I would never pay a seperate fee for wireless tethering to any wireless carrier especially if I already am paying for the data plan. Wireless providers are just too greedy at times *cough*tiered data plans*cough*
Thanks for the responses guys. I hope the custom roms on this phone one day are up to par with what I have come to expect from the Captivate forums.
Also I read that Verizon has been cracking down on wireless accounts that use third party tethering apps. Can anyone confirm this or point me to a reliable source?

Hey, if you get a chance, can you shoot me a PM. I got a couple questions for you and I think I can't send PMs or something.
everything is about to change. On July 7th est, there is be tiered data plans for verizon. 2gb for 29.99, 5 gb for 50 and 10 gb 80. So if your not already on the unlimited than you will not have unlimited more. sucky
Is there a fix to get android-wired-tether working on the charge?

I am running GummyCharged 1.8.1. I installed the wired_tether_1_4.apk, ran it, accepted root permission, but got the "Unsupported Kernel" popup. The adp-1_6-kernel-update_usbtether_r3.zip will not install as clockwork states it is outdated.
Is there a fix to get android-wired-tether working on the charge? I know pdanet/easytether/klink work, but are paid apps.
Thanks
@mrxhack - You are correct. I forgot that the SamChg won't run on the Google Code Wired Tether app. I like EasyTether, though - It works great, and doesn't cost too much. Try the free version first, to see if it works well with GC.

[Q] Tethering/Hotspot

Hello,
I was curious if performing an S-Off on my Sensation 4G would allow me to create a hotspot and tether?
I currently don't have a hotspot/tether plan with T-Mobile, but I've heard there are many ways around it.
I tried searching for the keywords "hotspot" and "tether" in the "Q&A" section but the posts were from before AlphaRevX & unrevoked's S-Off came out.
Does anyone know if this is possible and if so do you have any recommendations?
Thank you,
lilhugo

theres a app called android tether in the market or search google it works i have it on my girls hd2 not on my sensation because i have a tether plan
Doesn't under 'Settings - Wireless & networks', turning on 'Portable Wi-Fi hotspot' not essentially tethering out your phone's internet to whatever device connects wifi to it?
I had someone try this on an ipad2 but claim it was very slow.
I use the USB tethering setting to whatever device that can recognize the internet connection via usb...but things like tablets usually don't take usb like for that.
That's exactly what I had to do today.

Internet at the office was down so I lent them my Sensation to use as wifi hotspot for the rest of the week.
I haven't installed any special software for it, so I'm pretty sure I could have done that before S-OFF.

Thanks for the info guys. I was curious... Why have a tether plan if you can just use "Wireless tether for Root Users" instead of paying for the tethering plan??
Thanks again,

Why not just use the built-in hotspot app or tethering function?
Or does T-Mobile block that stuff in the US?

Not to worry. As you can see, I live in Sweden and I have no superficial limit on my data plan. Also, they only use it to surf and check emails.
Nope, I was using wifi tether the day I bought the phone long before S-off. The function has always been there for Tmo US. And you don't need a tether plan, just the data plan which is required anyway.
It has always been under the, Settings/Wireless/Portable Wifi hotspot.
Just set a password and ssid and enable the hotspot and connect your laptop, tablet ect.. and off you go!!

See attached photo of notification from Tmobile that popped up on my Sensation (rooted, using the native Android tethering functionality)
List of phones I used for tethering in the past without getting in trouble:
Touch pro 2 via bluetooth and USB (was told at the time by tmo that there was no fee for tethering)
HD2 via bluetooth, wifi and USB (winmo and Android)
MyTouch 4g via wifi-tether (got a notice while downloading a 167MB custom ROM a month ago while driving Owned the MyTouch for 9 months without a notice, and i tethered many times a week. Even Skype video calls, and Netflix on a couple occasions)
Just got popped on my Sensation today with the attached notice. It came through "Push" messaging. I can't find where to view any previous pushed messages, but I took a screen capture before i navigated away. I think i was only watching a couple YouTube vids that were embedded in a page at 360p quality. I hadn't been tethering when the message hit my phone. It was an hour or two late.
You do have to pay if they catch you. Last month they didn't add anything to my bill. My impression is that they are starting to watch the network for signs of tethering (bittorrent would be an easy example) Or large 167MB files. They threaten to shut your connection off during tethering or severely throttle.
If you're doing light browsing on occasion, you should be fine. I'm still mad that I have a 5GB cap on 3g/4g (i average about 2GB) where they'll throttle me down to Edge if I exceed that cap. That doesn't really bother me. I don't mind the cap. Just let me tether occasionally under that cap for free. Sometimes i need to send files on my laptop to someone. Or i need the big screen for a few minutes to type a word doc to send out. It's not worth $10-15/month extra. I still have the cap to keep me honest...
The issue really came up when the Tmobile G2 was released a year ago as the first phone to take advantage of HSPA+. That's the first i ever heard of tethering requiring a special plan.

Not sure this is right place for your troubleshooting question. Try asking in a thread where the ROM is being discussed... This thread is more about not having to pay Tmo for the privilege of tethering. Most of us have a data cap (2GB or 5GB) and we want to use it up without being told which device has to be the end user of that data. Tmo is trying to make sure people don't abuse the network with high demand like replacing a home internet connection.
But, here's my advice:
Make sure you are getting a data connection on the phone. Then make sure the PC is truly getting an IP (not a private IP that usually starts 169.x.x.x i think?), it should be 192.168.x.x. If you have trouble still, try disabling the security [WEP or WPA] in the tethering app. Then see if you can connect. If you can after disabling security, then you might need to tweak the security settings in the app, and replicate them on the PC to get secure again. I don't have that ROM, so i can't be of more help.
Thanks for the reply, I would put it in the Rom thread, but don't have enough posts to do that yet.......

Tmous action against tether
Ok. Now Tmo has gone farther. I posted earlier in this thread about their notices against tethering. Now they've gone a step further. I was tethering this morning and uploading a 55MB youtube video from my laptop. I got another push message warning me against tethering without the add-on plan and then my upload failed. I tried to pull up google.com on my laptop, and it went to a tmobile page encouraging me to add the tether option to my monthly plan. (see attached).
I am rooted and even just installed a 3rd party app for tethering by barnacle. Somehow Tmo still figured it out. The worst part is i could email the 55MB (via gmail) to my phone and then I could upload it to youtube via 3g/4g on my phone. This would cost Tmobil data twice (once each way to my phone).
I'm not asking to abuse my internet connection (i'm capped at 5gb/month anyway, then EDGE speeds after that). On my phone, I could easily watch Netflix for a few hours and Skype video conference all day long, and tax their network like crazy. But even with tethering, i've only used 1-2 GB per month. Maybe I'll send the video to my dropbox, then download it to my phone, and upload it from there. F*%k you Tmo! I'm buying 5GB/month, let me used it on my 15" screen with a full keyboard! I'm not asking for unlimited high speed data to replace my DSL (yeah, i know DSL is no faster than my 4G. It's better at my house than my tmo connection though).

You have got to be kidding me .. what next?
I have never had this problem with tmous. I regularly tether laptops, tablets and ipods to my Sensation with no issue/message. Heck, I moved into my new apartment a few months ago, and while I didn't have internet, I tethered my xbox to my sensation and played on that. HSPA+ was more than fast enough to give me no lag while pwning n00bs.

Tethering A Computer vs. Tablet

Tried to ask this in the general forums and didn't get an answer, wondering f you guys could help. Got an s3 to keep my unlimited data. Reading it says that Verizon can tell if you tethering to a computer due to TTL packets. I don't know much about networking but reading it says that windows computers while tethering push a value of 124 or 128 packets unless configured while android devices have a value of 64. The thing is I never tether to my computer only my tablet. So can I safely go nuts tethering to my tablet as if it was my phone due to it looking like I'm using my phone or am I way off and can Verizon tell I'm tethering and using my tablet. I really just want tot tether the hell out f my tablet when I need it. Anyways as this is XDA can I hide it safely? I have an unlimited data plan so the whole OK to tether thing since that lawsuit doesn't apply to me with this.

I don't know about the packet size issue you mentioned.
Otherwise, I have read that if*your Verizon tethering indicator turns on or your usage suddenly goes quite high for a month or more, they might suspect you of tethering without a plan and look into it. It's also said that apps like PDAnet make it very difficult for the service provider to figure out if you are tethering or not - regardless of what you're connected to.
- ooofest
VZW can no longer block tethering on 4g phones. Due to FCC saying so. Simple Google search will fond multiple articles.
There is no restrictions on unlimited versus tiered data plan. What counts is that you have a 4g phone. Check out this article ans the tether away.

Rocking T2 on the unlocked VSG3!
I've read differently. It sounds like if you have an unlimited data plan you can only use that data plan for a single device meaning that you can't tether the unlimited data. I read multiple places that this is part of the terms of service and it doesn't apply to unlimited data plan users... M
aybe somebody can clarify this for me because it would be great to use my unlimited data for tethering when on vacations.

Tethering
Its like not paying you bill. You get a warning. You can always deny it or ignore it. Modern PDANet if thats what you are boing to use has some countermeasures. At least 2 I think. Don't know if they are effective. You can just use Orobot to tunnel your traffic and I'm pretty certain that would work. I don't know what you plan to do but I wouldn't go download something shady from some torrent site though. Web browsing and getting email is probably fine.
I've been tethering my laptop to my phone since I first figured out how to do it with the Droid X. Meaning basically since I rooted it and found a decent tether app. Out of 5 people on a business share plan(business version of family plan - add a line for 9.99 etc) I've always had significantly highest usage. 5 gigs at a bare minimum, and not once has verizon figured out I'm tethering.
I honestly dont think they can really tell if you are or arent tehtering. 4g or 3g.
Curious, is Verizon still charging people today who were paying before the ruling? Is it possible now for me to use built in hotspot instead of wifi tether, regardless of whether or not i am on a custom rom? I am using latest synergy atm with wifi tether, i should have no problem using built in right?

atm no. the software is still there to keep you from doing that. IF you root, the world is your oyster though... and they aren't actually allowed to do anything to do. They just aren't rushing to open everyone up to free hotspotting.

[Q] Very slow kbps on a rooted Tmobile Galaxy s3

I'm hoping someone might provide some insight into this situation: I have a Galaxy s3 with Tmobile 5gigabyte data plan. I rooted it, installed Jellybean and am running a wifi tether app to "try" to circumvent the $14.99 wifi tethering surcharge they now want to charge. I tether my ipad to my phone, or at least that was the plan. Right after making all the OS changes, the tether worked great. Within 2-3 weeks, however, the speed on the wifi tether app is showing a download speed of 0.2kbps -- just enough for my iPad to see the tether, but not enough to do any browsing with the iPad.
I talked with a tmobile tier 2 tech and he said that their network can see when another device is using my phone (and their network) to access the internet... I thought that a rooted phone broke me free from the tmobile shackles, but is it possible that they can still see -- by IP address, etc. -- that my dataplan is using unauthorized access? I'm not clear on what exactly I'm asking here, but the point is is I cannot seem to keep an adequate speed on a rooted phone to tether my iPad to it and it is frustrating! I haven't seen one post on this issue, but I cannot be the only one out there experiencing this. Thanks in advance for any advice/help...
Yes, they can tell.
There's something about user agents, but I don't know if you can make that pass from an iOS device.
