[Q] USB confusion (mass storage/adb link setup) - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Edited following @Shawnsch's post, as I referred to MTP/PTP as "mass storage" which might be true but is confusing
I just got a Moto G (XT1032) 3 days ago. Like my previous phone, I've rooted/CWM/CM11. I'm getting pretty confused because the PC to USB link side of things isn't going smoothly like my previous phone did. I'm probably just confused, but not sure where I'm muddled, and I need things set out clearly.
On my old phone/firmware (Samsung + 2.3.x / CM7.2), I installed a manufacturers' USB driver (Win7 or Win8 x64) and ADB on the PC side. The phone then presented itself on connecting as a mass storage device and was assigned a letter, and also responded to adb if that was used too. On the phone side a USB icon appeared in the status bar when connected.
Fast forward to my new Moto G and... yeah, chaos. Sorry if this is a bit of a brain dump, I'm confused myself.
I got the basics fine - Motorola x64 drivers (Motorola_Mobile_Drivers_64bit.msi, 3533312 bytes) and TechGlen's adb/fastboot (v1.1.3). They both work as I've had adb install and file copying both working at different times, and unlocking+flashing was fine. But I'm not getting a stable situation where I can use both (MP or PTP) and adb. When I get the device recognised in "My Computer", it takes forever (with driver uninstall/reinstalls and pure luck) to get adb back again; once adb's working it's a nightmare getting Windows Explorer file transfer working again. I'm in and out of device manager and rebooting - I'm sure something's not done as it should be but what?
Each time I re-install the devices I get several kinds of device/driver it "knows" about - ADB Interface and Android device are both listed, but each has several drivers to choose from (Android ADB, Android composite adb, Mot composite adb, Mot single adb,and several others). I have no idea which to use or the differences between them. Sometimes it says "drivers not installed" with a yellow mark, but other times it says "this device doesn't need drivers" instead. Right now Device Manager shows both an Android device and an "Other devices->Motorola ADB interface" (The 2nd of those has "drivers not installed" although surely I've installed them many times now), and MTP/PTP aren't working since, although it audio-alerts on the phone and pops up in device manager, and sometimes I get the "driver installing" taskbar item, no storage device appears under "My Computer".
When I did get them working, the Moto no longer lists as a drive with a letter, it's listed as some kind of media device instead, so some software and disk management utils can't access it. It appears instead at the bottom of "my computer" as a separate kind of item. I also can't find how to enable/disable/control the USB connection in CM11. On my previous phone there was a clear status bar icon.
My questions are:
Which drivers and setup should I be using, to get Windows Explorer recognition and adb to both work smoothly? Is there a difference between an adb connection and a MTP/PTP connection in CM11 (by which I mean, do I need to "change mode" between them or can they both be used in parallel?)
Where is the usb status bar icon, and how do I disconnect/reconnect/turn on+off USB at the phone end
Can the Moto appear as a "regular" drive letter so that disk management tools with USB disk capability can act properly on it?

Yeah - referring to MTP/PTP as "mass storage" wasn't a good idea. I corrected my use of "mass storage" in the OP so people reading this won't get misinformed.
Odd thing I found as well - I got one machine to connect - if I put it in MTP mode it'll be recognised in Explorer but not ADB, and if I switch the Moto to PTP mode then ADB will not recognise it but Explorer won't.

Infuse Drives Not Showing Up In Windows, Device Is.

So the problem I'm having with my infuse is that the disk drives (E:/F are not showing up in Windows Explorer. I've done some trial and error to diagnose the problem but I'm currently at a loss. Here's what I know:
The cable is fine, I just purchased to new cable to make sure that it wasn't the problem after I thought that the original cable was the issue.
The phone works perfectly fine on linux, I'm able to mount the two devices (/dev/sdb, /dev/sdc) without problems and transfer files without any delay or trouble.
In windows the computer recognizes when the phone is plugged in and if you go into "Printers and Devices" you can see the "Samsung_Android" device. If you right click on it before you turn on USB storage on the device the context menu pops up and you can go into properties and see that all the functions are recognized for the phone, (two disk drives (it recognizes them as E and F), modem, two mtp devices, etc.)
Once you enable USB mass storage on the phone you can no longer right click on the device and see properties, if you do it takes a minute or two for the menu to pop up and clicking anything in the menu makes the lag unuseable.
Sometimes drive E: will show up in Explorer but not F: and when I click on it it still just stalls in loading the drive.
If I go into command line and type "e:" on windows to cd to that drive it also just stalls out rather than saying that the drive has not been found.
If I go into the disk manager to see if maybe it's just a drive name conflict in the management console it doesn't load because the manager just stalls out at "Connecting to Virtual Disk Manager Service"
I was originally having this problem on stock rooted FROYO, I was able to use Kies (through the same windows machine) and upgrade to stock GB but on GB I was still having the problem. Then I switched over to the stock rooted GB rom and I'm also still having the problem.
I'm pretty convinced the problem has to do with windows not my phone because I seem to have isolated it to just this windows install (I haven't had the opportunity to try on another windows machine but I figure it will probably work fine there) since it can't be due to the cable or a faulty Froyo/GB install.
Do you have any ideas on how I can fix this? I'll gladly provide anymore information regarding my problem if you think it will help.

I would uninstall all phone drives....download new set...reinstall....and see what happens.
And like you said....i would try another windows pc....

[Q] Trouble connecting Nexus 5 to new laptop in MTP mode

Not sure how many would read such a long post for a question, but here goes...
Any help is appreciated!!
1. Problem
In short, I plugged in my Nexus 5 to my laptop in MTP mode, it does not show up in "My Computer".
I just wanted to transfer files to my phone via USB, not even using ADB yet.
I have yet to solve the problem after googling around for a bit.
Relevant XDA threads that I remember reading are this, this, this, this and this.
I have tried numerous combinations of (un)plugging my phone / (un)installing drivers / rebooting my laptop and phone / switching usb ports / turning USB debugging on and off / connect in PTP mode / ...
As a workaround, I am now transferring files using the AirDroid app, which is really convenient with acceptable speed.
Still, it would be nice to know why the problem occurred and see if others have similar problem.
Below I will describe the devices I have on hand and more details on the failures I have encountered will follow.
2. My Devices
A. an old Galaxy Note
B. the new Nexus 5 with the stock micro USB cord
C. new laptop
- 64-bit Windows 8 Pro (not upgraded to 8.1 yet)
- only USB 3.0 ports
D. old laptop
- 32-bit Windows XP Home
- only USB 2.0 ports
3. Details
Scenario A. Nexus 5 not showing up in "My Computer"
Naturally, the first thing I tried is to simply plug my Nexus 5 in to my new laptop. I was used to Android devices working just like that!
However, my Nexus 5 does not show up in "My Computer" after a loooong wait.
On a closer look, my Nexus 5 (only) appears in the "Device Manager" under "Portable Devices" as "MTP USB Device".
It shows my device to be "working properly". However, I cannot uninstall/disable it when my phone is plugged in (normal?)
Frustrated, I decided to unplug my phone. I have the option to "Unplug Nexus 5" under "Safely Remove Hardware", but the operation always times out, so I simply unplugged it.
Then I tried with my Note using the same cable. It works flawlessly either in MTP mode or Mass Storage mode.
Scenario B. Nexus 5 shows up, but is really sloooooooooooooow
At some point, I turned on USB debugging.
With USB debugging on, my phone appears under "Portable Devices" as "Nexus 5" (and in some other places according to what drivers I have installed).
I was quite pleased for a few seconds as my Nexus 5 now shows up in "My Computer"!
However, it took a few minutes to list the folders I have under my phone's internal storage.
Attempting to copy a 12MB file to it gives an estimated time of over 2 hours.
Scenario C. Success?
After tinkering with it for some time to no avail, I was beginning to worry if I have gotten a defective hardware.
Then I remembered I had an old laptop stashed somewhere, so I tried connecting my Nexus 5 to that.
And... voila! It works without a hitch (MTP mode, USB debugging off).
A maybe useful note is that I have used both the old and new laptops to transfer files to my Note before.
4. Possible causes
While many seems to have solved the issue by simply unplugging and letting Windows reinstall the drivers, I have no such luck.
I sincerely hope that it is not due to any hardware defects since
a) my Note can talk to my new laptop through the same micro USB with no problems, and
b) my Nexus 5 can talk to my old laptop.
I feel that this is a driver-related issue but I am not sure.
Is it possible that there are compatibility issues with using USB 3.0 port (which should be backward compatible...) or a 64-bit Win 8 Pro?
Any help is appreciated!
It is so strange..
I just bought a USB 2.0 hub and connected my phone to my new laptop through it.
Guess what... it works perfectly!
Apparently my problem was that my new laptop only had USB 3.0 ports for me to test on?
Doesn't make sense... thought 3.0 is backward compatible and my old Note works on it!
Maybe I'm missing something but I'm happy it is solved for me now

My laptop also only has USB 3.0 ports and Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit installed.
The Nexus 5 doesn't get installed, in MTP mode it is just shown with the yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. Downloading different USB drivers including Google's and trying to manually install it doesn't work at all. I specifically checked that all older similar drivers are gone, so I doubt that older Android devices could be interfering.
On the other hand, as you noted, using an older computer with USB 2.0 works perfectly, I had the same result.
To be honest, I'm not much of a developer or Android tinkerer, so I'm not really making any progreess... In the end, I think I will follow your example and test it with a USB 2.0 adapter.
Did you manage to get it to work without this workaround?

I had a lot of issues with my S3 and my work computer (windows XP SP3) and it was because I had half installed some USB driver that windows tried installing.
I fixed the problem in device manager by manually uninstalling EVERY SINGLE USB DEVICE attached to the computer while I had my phone plugged in.
Word of caution: You'll probably uninstall your mouse/keyboard doing this.
Once everything was uninstalled I reinstalled the Samsung drivers and it worked fine.
The same computer only required me to install the Google drivers for my N5. If I enable USB debugging, I all of a sudden can't install MTP drivers, but USB debugging disabled works fine.
USB & MTP mode
I have the same problem with my Nexus 5. The only workaround to transfer files to my phone from a computer via USB cable is to enable USB debuging, set the phone to PTP mode instead of MTP and then it shows in My Computer as a camera. I can only access the DCIM and Pictures folders but for now I have to settle for this...I copy all the files I need to let's say Pictures and then using a file explorer (on the phone) I cut and paste them to the folders I wish...e.g. movies to Movies, music to Music and so on...
I had same problem. Developer Mode...USB Debugging ON worked.
I have this problem too, but I got it to work using a galaxy s3 cable. for some reasons the cable that came with N5 did not work.
Its usually just missing drivers.. You can get them straight from Google or a toolkit as mentioned! (P.s you need to download a little applet like thing from Google if you want to hook up your Mac to your n5)

The problem I am having now connecting is that my phone got wet recently. I dried it immediately and used dessicant to withrow the water and now it works (sort of). Now when I plug my phone into my pc, the usb debugging icon doesn't even show up.
I tried connecting to both my work pc and home laptop and they both say the same thing, that the usb device has malfunstioned and that windows doesn't recognize it.
Is it time for a new phone?

Sounds like the usb is shorting. How long did you let it dry. Give it more time and try it again.

Yeah maybe thats what happened. It's been drying now for about a week. The screen was the major problem at first but has since dried there mostly.
Hopefully it will come back. Would suck to have to buy a new phone because of that.

MTP connecting problem solved
Going back to the subject of the thread: I am pretty sure that ADB drivers and SDK (I am confident that a lot of nexus users have their devices rooted and that means they must have the above installed) is what is causing some sort of conflict when trying to connect the Nexus 5 as MTP. After I reinstalled the windows (W8) on my computer and connected my Nexus 5 it took @1-2 minutes to auto install the drivers and then worked fine...I have no ideea what happens if I install ADB and SDK again...

If you tell the SDK not to install the drivers it'll be fine
The simplest and shortest way to connect google nexus5 with PC as MTP(Media device)
When I plugged it, there wasn't any yellow exclamation mark within Device Manager. So for me, the drivers were OK. But the device was not listed within my Eclipse DDMS. After a little bit of searching, it was just an option to change in the device settings. By default, the Nexus 5 USB computer connection is in MTP mode (Media Device).
What you have to do is:
Unplug the device from the computer
Go to Settings -> Storage.
In the ActionBar, click the option menu and choose "USB computer connection".
Then select Media device(MTP) or Camera(PTP) based on your requirement...
Plug the device and you should have a popup on the device allowing you to accept the computer's incoming connection..

I faced the same problem with mine...
Couldn't connect my phone with my laptop.
It installs the driver but not displaying the folder in my computer.
I uninstalled the Existing samsung driver in control panel.
Then the issue has been solved,
Or uninstall previous mobile's drivers
Try this!?!
Search for Universal Driver here in XDA. Had the same problem most of you are having. First try and BAM! Works like a champ...

Problem solved for me
I have no more issues what-so-ever after I unninstalled ADB & SKD drivers...Windows(8) installed my phone by itself after a restart and it works as it should in MTP mode and PTP mode.

I've had this problem before, but I have always been able to fix it by uninstalling ADB and drivers, through WUG's toolkit, changing cables, device manager/update drivers, jumping up and down while spinning and plugging cable in, among other things. However, this time is different and I'm not sure if it is because of M on my phone or the Windows 10 update. This problem has been going on for over a month now, and I've had both since it started. I've tried all the above mentioned things, along with everything else I can find, and none of them work.
The only way I can get my computer to recognize my phone to share files is to go into device manager every I plug it in is to; go to device manager, right click to update driver, select do it from my pc, select driver in folder. After doing this it works perfectly fine, but I have to do it every time I plug my phone in or every time my phone turns off while it's plugged in. The error message I get on my computer is "USB device not recognized" when I go into device manager it says "device descriptor request failed" It does this on both of my PCs. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

I think I'm getting something similar since I've installed "M"....
Under:
Settings -> Developer Options -> Select USB Configuration
It say's it's set to "MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)"; it really isn't. When I plug the phone in, under Win 8.1, a desktop window opens with "AOSP on Hammerhead" (or something like that), but there's nothing in it. Now for some magic....
With the phone in one hand, and the mouse in the other:
1. Open Settings -> Developer Options -> Select USB Configuration
2. Touch "MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)" (even if it's already selected)
3. Listen for the PC/Windows Desktop (it should give an audible sound)
4. Immediately click on the "AOSP on Hammerhead" text in the path listed on the open Windows widow ("This PC -> AOSP on Hammerhead")
5. You should see an "Internal Storage" folder appear
6. Open the folder, enjoy MTP

Can't connect to PC for file Transfer

Brand New Unlocked S8+... Tried to connect it to my PC to use a previous copy of smart switch backup but it never connects.. Windows Explorer never displays a mounted drive either. Smart Switch Eventually comes back with Failed to connect to the device.
The Phone displays the "Attention The connected device is unable to access data pm this device. Reconnect the USB cable and try again...."
Phone is on Transfer Media files (MTP)
USB Debugging is one.
Device Manager says "Samsung Android Phone - SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface" two times - No red or yellow exclamations.
I've removed the software in device manager and restarted both the phone and the laptop multiple times.
I updated Smart Switch and did More\Reinstall Device Driver.
Does anyone else have any workarounds for this? I found one article (https://www.recovery-android.com/connect-samsung-to-computer.html) but still no success.

Doesn't seem like there is much help here on the 2 Samsung formums I posted on....
I know its not my windows profile as I have tried 3 different profiles as well as safe mode.
Tried 2 different sets of Samsung USB drivers and no improvement.
Like I said I had no issues on a windows XP machine or a windows 10. I didn't even need to install the USB drivers/Smartswitch on either of those machines.
We can't be the only 2 people!

Firstly, i cannot give you direct answers.
Just my thoughts.
i have a S8+. No root stock as is.
I have Lenovo laptop Win 10.
From day one, out of box, i connected
S8+ and it connected. I can do whatever
i want. Transfer data, photos videos.
ADB etc
So it should work...?
However i do realize there are quite a few things to consider......
Samsung drivers on laptop and a few other
issues..... eg
For one,
have you enabled
in Phone /Settings /Developers Option /Usb debugging.?
Normally first time when you connect
With pc /laptop you should get
a small pop-up message(on device) to allow
phone to connect.?
(that's my experience, over years)

Yes, USB Debugging is on and connection is set to MTP.
Windows recognizes "USB Android" but dosnt install the driver successfully.
It will appear as a modem in Device manager but nothing is mountable.
I have 2 desktop pcs with win 10. One with samsung software Kies 3 and smart switch installed and the other no samsung software. Both find the device Galaxy S8+, in device manager under universal serial device controllers i have Samsung Mobile USB Composite Device. You have an adb driver I think because you have usb debugging on, i would turn usb debugging off. The pc should find a device connected to the usb and download a driver, once done the device is recognised as galaxy S8+ in my case but will not communicate with the pc until the phone has given permission. On the phone will be a message asking you to allow the connection. Hope this helps ??

Firstly i do understand that you
must be quite annoyed trying to figure
out issues. (I would) Thankfully i don't.
Bottom line is that it should work..!
My experience confirms, that S8+/laptop Win 10 works.... 100%when connected
However a few suggestions.
If you feel you checked all checkbox.?
However you never said anything
about popup notice ? granting premission
for device to connect.?
So device /laptop /pc is not "seeing" each other?
All Samsung devices I have used, first time connection gives me this popup a notice

Have you tried connecting to a friend pc laptop.
An option is to go to a Samsung Care Center
and as them to test and connect.
My experience (in past) is that they should
assist you.
If it connects to friend pc or Service provider /Samsung Care Centre.
Then surely it has to be your pc/laptop?
So I turned off usb debugging and revoked the permissions on the phone, connected it to my PC.
Samsung Android (with a Yellow Exclamation) was already present in Device Manager under "other devices" so I uninstalled that.... and rescanned. My laptop attempted to reinstall but it generated a Driver Installation Failed message on "SAMSUNG_Android" - no driver found.
Device Manager once again shows the Yellow Exclamation Point
I would go on to Samsung support look up the phone and download the usb driver and install from the download. Good luck
I've downloaded the drivers from Samsung 2x.

I can vaguely remember that i had this same
issues with my Note 5 and Win 10.
This was many months/year or two, ago.
I also had yellow exclamation etc.
Further in Device manager( laptop) kept installing wrong Samsung drivers.!
I uninstalled drivers/installed and battle for a few months like this Then one day Windows
did an update and in update i noticed
Samsung drivers included etc. (must have been correct)
Ever since that update i had no issues again.
Bottom line... some drivers issue?
Not S8 +?

In the past I had this problem I downloaded USBDeview to my PC and deleted all of the old Samsung drivers, after rebooting the PC the phone was able to connect with the PC.
Tried USBDeview and removing the Samsung drivers but no difference
Still unable to connect.
I'm having this problem as well. I'm still trying to work it out, but when I remove and re-add the device through Device Manager I get this error: "An existing device was found that is a duplicate of the device being manually installed" and the device DOES connect as a camera, just not for full file transfer.
I had the same problem and tried many of the fixes, including different USB cables and different computers and different phones. I finally figured out that the case I had on the S8+ was the problem (at least for me). I took it off and everything works.

I have Windows on Lenovo Laptop with latest Windows updates installed. Yesterday, I downloaded Samsung Smart Switch unlocked the phone and connected it to the laptop. Smart Switch found it immediately and I did a backup. I did not need to check Device Manager. It must be a drivers problem as mentioned above.
Note 8, getting "Attention The connected device is unable to access data pm this device."
And I am only able to see some files, Sammy is a crazy fool, this is basic stuff
installed the windows fall update a week ago now connect my phone to my laptop and nothing is recognised, no phone memory and no memory card just a empty space when i click the icon where my phone should be, i've had samsung drivers installed and they have worked fine so far till today, any ideas where to find the latest drivers? and what else i can do to get access to my phone on my laptop?
solution that worked for me
On my windows 10 PC, I opened device manager (open up start and just type 'device manager') and under portable devices there was a usb device called MTP USB device or something like that (I forget the exact name) with a small triange and an exclamation mark next to it. I clicked on that and then clicked "update drivers." When the prompt comes up I chose the automatically look for drivers option. This fixed the issue and now my Galaxy s8 is recognized (it no longer says MTP USB device or whatever it was). Hopefully this works for others as well. You can also probably download the usb drivers for the phone from samsung.

When I plug in my pixel into my Windows 10 laptop, neither device responds. This means that I get neither the AutoPlay pop up on the laptop, or the USB option notification on the phone.
What I have tried:
Plugging into a Windows 7 laptop; the AutoPlay box appears on the laptop, the USB options notification appears on the phone
Tried all USB ports on the Windows 10 laptop.
Confirmed that other USB devices appear correctly on the Windows 10 laptop
Any thoughts?

Have you installed the latest fastboot and adb. If not download them here and make sure to add the folder containing the files in your path or unzip the files to your Windows directory. I had the same problem on Windows 10 when I was running it and that fixed it for me.
Check in Device Manager to see if the Android device is listed. If it's listed but is indicated as not having a driver loaded, you can always download the latest drivers from https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb.html and the latest platform tools at https://dl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools-latest-windows.zip.
Extract the drivers, right click the non-working Android entry in Device Manager, point it to the main folder you extracted the drivers into and see if it'll load the drivers. This may not be the problem but worth a try. Even if it doesn't solve it on Windows 10, try the same thing on Windows 7. Windows 7 may be too old that it won't automatically find the correct necessary driver like it should on 10.

 @bobby janow I am familiar with Google. Believe it or not, I even went to page 3 of the search. The solution you found has been tried and does not work.
Install Linux, no drivers to install, it just works
Some dumbed down versions you might have to do
apt install adb fastboot
You never have to reboot, only if new kernel, and that too is going to change

Until you can get it to show up in Device Manager, there's nothing else you can do. Try a different USB port? Reboot the PC? Try a different cable if you have one? I can't think of anything else to try other than reinstalling Windows. I haven't had any trouble on Windows 7 or 10.

clutching at straws but worth trying as tell the computer sees the phone and lists it you are stuck so enable developer options then enable usb debugging and set usb configuration to MTP then with the phone connected and the phone unlocked reboot the phone keeping the phone unlocked all the time.

It's not the use of it, it's the installation of a dual boot that doesn't take up too much space.
I did go have a look, suggestions are Ubuntu or Mint. Would like the smaller one.

Make a bootable USB of each distro you want to try. It's super easy with Rufus. This way you can try it without installing anything or wasting blank disks. I like Mint, it's basically Ubuntu with a face-lift.
No app needed to do simple things from command line ?

i'm not having much luck.. the device manager still either shows "pixel?" if the phone is set to no transfer.. or "MTP?" if phone set to file transfer... if I update drivers.. it says it tries then fails / had an error... any ideas?
@tithij You ever figure this out? I have the same problem I've even replaced the daughterboard but can't get the phone to show up in device manager when in bootloader mode.

I haven't actually done anything to fix it except to upgrade my phone and laptop.
Phone is on Android 9
Windows enterprise is on 1709
Now when I plug the phone in, I get the options on the phone and laptop. I choose File transfer and it works.
Not really helpful. But sometimes it seems apathy solves all problems.
If Pixel phone on connecting to windows only shows up in File Manager when you choose PTP option in the Pixel’s USB Preferences (and disappears from Explorer when you select File Transfer), you will be restricted to the DCIM and photos directory, thanks to the miserable ADB Composite driver that keeps getting updated or installed for morons who can’t handle full drive access in their pixels. ADB and PTP were designed so idiots would not need to worry about anything other than their media directories on their Pixel phones.
For anyone above age 4, full access to the Pixel SD memory is preferred. To fix the above, it is necessary to ditch the ADB drivers and get the generic MTP drivers back instead in Windows. Here’s how I did it on a Pixel 4XL with android 12 or 13:
Unplug phone, make sure Developer’s Options is ‘on’ and that USB Debugging is ‘on’
Ensure that in USB Preferences, it is defaulted to File Transfer/Android Auto and NOT to PTP
In Windows, open Device Manager, View, and check ‘show hidden files’
Then, open View-Devices by Type-Portable and delete/uninstall your Pixel phone, all of them if there’s more than one.
Then start looking for anything that says Android or ADB, and delete every shred of anything that’s an ADB Driver interface, whether composite, USB, whatever. If it has ADB in it alone or under LeMobile or Acer, it’s got to go. Uninstall and delete them
Plug in phone
Under Device Manager-View-Devices by Type-Portable find your Pixel device. Right click and Update Driver. Then, click Browse My computer, then click Let Me Choose, and then click MTB USB Device… I picked the bottom-most one
That’s it, it should work
