when I change it to Normal, then leave the screen and return to it, it's back at High again. I tried restarting then changing, changing then restarting, installing knox then changing, uninstalling knox then changing.. I don't know what else there is to do.
anyone know how to fix this? it was at Normal when I bought it but once it was changed to High it won't go back. before changing it to High I did run a security policy update.
I think it's blocking me from installing manually downloaded apps (something is...) despite Unknown Sources being checked
bump....

Hey, I'm having this same problem. Did you ever figure it out?
My phone did a software update and then some security policy update appeared and I accepted. Now I can't get my old versions of Google Maps and Google Music to install from the APK's. I also cannot change the 'Security Level' back to normal, it resets to high every time.
Very frustrating. Can someone offer a solution?

This app: Ultimate Rotation Control
has now claimed a second victim. A long time ago, I installed URC on my Motorola Atrix, as a way to force screen rotation in certain apps. Once I uninstalled URC, my Atrix could no longer use the system's auto rotate feature, until I completely wiped it and installed a new ROM.
Well I was hoping that it was just a fluke, a one-time incompatibility with the Atrix. Because I needed it on my new phone, a Samsung Galaxy S3, because it was the only way to get Tasker to rotate my screen.
Well sure enough, the moment I uninstalled it from my S3, I could no longer use the system's built-in auto rotate feature, AGAIN.
I have tried rebooting, reinstalling the app, uninstalling the app with different settings (like uninstalling it while in force-rotate mode), toggling system rotate in different conditions... NOTHING I've tried gets it working again!
I've contacted the developer, but in the mean time, does anyone have any suggestions to get my phone's auto-rotate working again? Perhaps there's some hidden system file that URC messed with, that I can go edit to fix all of this? I really don't want to have to do a factory reset again!

Flash what ROM? I'm running stock, rooted. My phone is unlocked.
But of course wiping the entire phone would fix it. I'm asking if there is any way to fix it without wiping everything.
Right now it seems like the only way I can get it working is to have the app installed and running at all times. Strange that I'm the only reviewer that has noticed this behaviour, maybe no one else has ever tried to uninstall it before?
I've got an Idol 3 that has been randomly shutting down. No warning, no specific activity happening... it just shuts off.
I checked to see if there are any pending updates, no dice... it is up to date.
I was thinking to start deleting installed apps to see if it might be related to something that is running. If no help there, perhaps a factory restore.
Has anyone seen anything like this? Any suggestions?
If a factory reset doesn't solve it, it is probably defective and hopefully you can return it for a different one. If a factory reset fixes it. Only add your apps back one at a time to see if it was a particular app that was causing the issue. Let us know if there is an app that isn't playing well with the idol.
Factory reset is a really good way to pin it down to either software or hardware. Run it with just the stock apps for a day to see if it's solid.
Also, if you have a micro SD card in there, pop it out. If there's any issues with the card, or if that specific one just doesn't happen to get along with the phone..it can cause odd things to happen.
What were the results? My device is doing that too...

Check the temperature of your device as soon after a shutdown as possible.....turn off location reporting in location settings to cut down on gps use which I'm told can cause excessive heat if you find the temp is high (over 100F)
The phone was cold to the touch the last time it restarted which was a few minutes ago. Also I was running the system update and the phone got pretty hot and did not shutdown or restart.
Now that I think of it It wasn't having this restart problem till I ran the update... Maybe it got too hot and broke something...
It did get stuck on updating one of the app packages for a lot longer then the rest. Maybe the update didn't install properly?
I've been having the same problem since the most recent software update. It normally happens when I change the volume in my Opera browser.
Did a factory reset and it didn't fix the problem... Alcatel said to contact returns to get a new phone
I love the phone! I just wish this process hadn't came up. I hope they ship the new one fast, Alcatel has been communicating very fast.
I have the same problem. Only for about two times a week. Has somebody a solution?
So I SWEAR I saw this mentioned somewhere earlier today but after searching I can't seem to locate it.
As the title says. I have Automatic system updates turned OFF. Turned that off right after I got it unlocked and rooted.
Verizon Pixel XL NDE63P
Today I get a notification regarding Android 7.1 Update. I didn't tap on it, couldn't clear it. Was concerned that the update might auto install without my permission or something. Well that hasn't happened, and NOW the notification is gone. I don't want to update yet...
I was thinking that turning off automatic system updates would mean it wouldn't even check to know there was an update. Am I going to be living with a nag that comes back with a hair trigger update button. Had that on Samsungs in the past. Will make you crazy always having to tell it NO try tomorrow every day...
Just wanted to see if anyone had seen this behavior or if I was just loosing my marbles here.
Thanks!
Screwit, just sideloaded the update. Everything is good, unlocked, rooted, customer kernel etc...
I'm having an issue getting into my lock screen and security settings. Every time I try to open it, it crashes. I can get into every other setting besides lock screen and security. Also can't use the search feature without it crashing. Galaxy S8+here. Anyone know a work around without having to factory reset my device?

strange,
please give more details
I'm having the exact same problem on my s8+. Cannot use search function in settings menu or settings just crashes. Only discovered today actually, that I can't access lock screen and security now. Clicking on lock screen and security causes settings to crash. Have you been able to fix this? I really don't want to have to do a reset.
try safe mode so you can find out if it is caused by an app
If you forgot the login password , you can not access your phone
I'm having the exact same problem. Only noticed after installing bixby and it recommending setting up smart lock from the lock screen and then not being able to get in to the settings. Was working fine when I used it just a couple days ago, not sure if bixby has anything to do with it but have tried wiping cache and safe mode with no luck?
Edit: so just after getting a new firmware update the problem seems to be fixed. Not sure if this was an actual issue with the old firmware or any update would have fixed it.

So this has actually happened to me 2x. It's effecting my phone currently. The first time it just kinda fixed itself after an update thru T-Mobile. Sucks. Can't use Google Maps or Inbox at all either. So frustrating.
My settings crashes when I go to set "Emergency Alerts" and the Advanced settings in Mobile Hotspot. Wiping cache doesn't help. Anyone else have this happen?
Is anybody experiencing problems with notifications after the B402 Update as well? If my phone is in standby for some time, i dont get notifications for Whatsapp and snapchat for example. Even if i turn on the screen or unlock it, they still dont show. I have to open the apps manually to get the messages, which is unacceptable. Anybody knows a solution? However, the battery life improved(who would have guessed that?)
That happens if you don't factory reset after update and/or restore apps from backup.
Try factory reset, install apps from store and restore just the user data of the apps.

Have you disabled "System wakeup" or enabled "Close app after screen off"? If you did, try toggling them and reboot the phone.
Having said that, I have WhatsApp with disabled System wakeup, and I still get notifications, because WhatsApp also utilises Google Play Services to wakeup the app when a notification arrives. I would check the settings of Google Play services on your phone in case something is killing it.

Source? If that was the case, all the people that update their phone would have myriads of problems. Upgrading without factory reset doesn't cause problems as far as I know. Certainly, I haven't had this type of malfunction, and I've never factory-reset the phone since I got it 18 months ago - that includes the Marshmallow to Nougat upgrade.

This is an old issue, as old as android updates.
Sometimes battery performance decreases with the update, some others is FCs, or notifications, missing stock apps.
Source is XDA, several devices, years of experience and other users that share the same experience.
Don't waste your time debating this, if you don't agree, that's fine.
Actually I think the most common is battery performance decrease which is really annoying when changelog says "battery performance optimisation". After a factory reset magic happens. It's due to old system files (internal and external storage) vs new system files.
Same thing happens after consecutive Windows updates, performance starts to decrease because update doesn't properly clean old files and configs.
