Hi,
I have a Vodaphone branded UK Moto G - I have just unlocked it successfully and flashed the stock FW. My friend has a Sim free Moto G. I was concerned because on my Moto G I cannot get 3G signal in the house, all I get is "G" rather than "3G/H+"
Using the same sim in my friends Sim Free Moto G, I can get H+ very eassily in the same house when the phone are placed still on a desk.
Does anyone know why this might be? I'd like to know if it's worth me getting mine replaced first before taking it back and paying the extra for a sim free model?
thanks

Are both devices on the same modem version?
They both seem to be identical in software (in the about phone section)
And the only visible difference is the back of the branded
One has a white M rather than black.

I don't know if this will solve your issue but download phone testing from diewland from playstore and set your network to "WCDMA ONLY" and see if it helps. If not it might need to reconfigure your apn.
You can check/select the network type by going to the dialer and dialing *#*#4636#*#* and looking in the phone information section

Guys, i need help. :|
I am brazilian and i'm about to take a RAZR HD used, but the phone is locked by VERIZON.
Is there any way to unlock the phone?
Help :|
The Droid RAZR HD from Verizon should be Global gsm sim unlocked, meaning you can buy it from Verizon go to Brazil and put a gsm sim card in it and it should work without any problems. No need to unlock it or anything.

But i heard the VERIZON devices is CDMA...they really compatible with GSM network? Your device is verizon, but you use the verizon services?
Hello,
I'm planning to buy a Razr HD too, i'm from India. I once bought the Motorola Photon 4G from eBay India and the network was working fine. I used an Aritel sim card, it was a Sprint device, but since Photon is a world phone it read the SIM. The major problem it had was that the internet wasn't working on it, and the phone had MANY bugs, I couldn't even connect it to WiFi. So, without internet connectivity I just used it as a MP3 Player.
I want to buy Razr HD, and Motorola is not launching it in India so the ebay one is a Verizon Unlocked. I'm pretty sure that the phone will read the sim, but i have my doubts wether it'll connect to the internet or not. Even in your case, I think you will be able to make calls etc. but i have my doubts on data services.
Should I go for it? Or just pick the LG Nexus 4?

well, the owner of the phone has cutted and inserted a micro sim on the razr, but the message "the sim card is from a unknown source" has appeared in the screen :|
Is it a GSM SIM or a CDMA one? Try to re-insert it, or try another carrier. If the phone is locked try unlocking it

Why do these threads continually appear? They have been answered at least a dozen times.
The Verizon model of the RAZR HD is UNLOCKED FOR INTERNATIONAL CARRIERS. No codes are required. If you want to use the Verizon model on a US GSM carrier (ATT/TMobile), you have to do a little hackery.
Yes, you will see an annoying "This SIM is from an unknown source" warning when you start the phone. Press OK to bypass it (or root the phone and freeze the APK that displays that warning.)
I have been to Australia numerous times with this phone -- there is no CDMA anything in Australia -- and the phone works just fine on AU carriers at HSPA+ speeds.
What about the internet connectivity? Data Connection? GPRS settings don't come automatically and dont work manually.

I've read on many sites...the Verizon Razr can't be unlocked... i'm confused. :|

I haven't unlocked any phone yet, so I dont know much details. There is an unlocking key which I think the service center guys know about. Not Sure

Did you not read what I said? The RAZR HD, is UNLOCKED OUT OF THE BOX. Do NOT pay a service to unlock the phone. IT IS ALREADY UNLOCKED. No code is required.
Everything works fine internationally (this includes data). You can manually enter APNs if you have to right from the settings page. Just pull out the Verizon SIM, and put in whatever international SIM you want. That's all you have to do. Note the phone uses Micro-SIMs, so you will need to cut a regular SIM down to size or buy a micro one.
The only time you will run into a problem is if you bring it to the US. The radio won't accept an ATT or TMobile SIM. If you fall into this small subset of people, then you will need to change some values in the radio. There's a thread on here somewhere about it.
As I said before, I have been to Australia many times with this thing. During these trips I removed the VZW SIM and used an Australian SIM to avoid Verizon's insane Australian Charges ($5/min voice, $25/MB data.)
I unlocked my moto g on the tesco network still on 4.3 and giffgaff worked great then i got the OTA too 4.4,
since then i lose network connection randomly i tried deleting all apns and starting fresh in case there was an issue,
but no luck figuring this out anyone else had this problem.
If i downgrade it works perfect unsure whats going on. :crying:
Not cool. Out of interest did you unlock via tesco themselves or code from eBay?
My dad is grabbing a phone from tesco tomorrow but uses giffgaff so I'll be interested to see how this turns out.

Hi All,
I have been using Moto G for 2 weeks now. Aboslutley no notable issues till now but for one.
I have Airtel GSM connection in India. And when i am switched to 3G Network, I often notice N/W issues like my calls take time to get connected, 3G Internet goes slow and sometimes when i try to check my balance using *123# or *121*2# , I get this error message - "Connection Problem or Invalid MMI Code".
This never happens if i am switched to 2G Network. Happens only when i am in 3G.
Co-Incidently I had this problem in my older Samsung Galaxt SL i9003 too.
Kindly let me know if anyone else in India is facing this issue or can it be because of my device or my SIM.
P.S i happened to cut my normal SIM to Micro Sim to fit it into Moto G and my SIM is approx 4.7 years old.
It should be your sim card problem.. Try with some other sim and other networks like Vodafone

Are your sure that its because of SIM?
MMI code issue is known to exist on many devices and probably has nothing to do with your sim.
Its better to get a newer micro sim, moto g doesn't like cut sim cards. I had to get a new one, the cut one was simply not detected at all. YMMV though.

i mean literally is there no google
tbh means to be honest
many sims which were 4 years or older had some problems (moto g indian thread)
it can be mmi code but i'm not sure then
Actually i had the same problem with my sam y and now on moto g.. my wife has the same issue on her sam s duos.. imo it's the poor 3g network of airtel that causes this issue more than anything else..

It's due to poor network of some service providers. I have 2 sims: Docomo and Idea, Docomo gives me some problem with network connectivity and running USSD codes also but Idea works smooth.
Hi,
Yesterday I bought a new, sim-free Moto G 4G from Phones4U in York.
I put a Tesco Mobile PAYG sim in it and switched on waiting to be blown away by the 4G speed.
Unfortunately, the phone never got better than a 3G HSPA connection despite being in an area with good 4G coverage.
I tried the sim card in someone else's phone, and it went straight to 4G.
Today, I took my phone back to the shop. They had a Galaxy S4 on the desk showing a good 4G connection on EE, so they took the sim from that one and put it into my phone - as before, only a 3G signal, no sign of 4G.
They then got another Moto G 4G (sealed box) and put the EE sim into that one - STILL no 4G.
At that point they refunded my money.
I would be interested to hear if anyone has got a Moto G 4G in the UK and actually gets a 4G signal.
Cheers,
Stooby
I know I shouldn't reply to my own post, but I've now ordered another phone from Tesco Direct in the hope that this problem only affects a batch of them.

Hmmmmm. I wonder if Tesco have set 3G to be the default network on the Tesco-branded Moto G. I know on some devices there is a setting that will enable or disable connection to 4G. Might be in Wireless & networks > Mobile networks unless it has been moved. Haven't got a Moto G 4G yet so I can't be sure.
Thanks for the reply, but I did check that it was set to prefer 4G connections. Indeed, the people at Phones4U checked it a couple of times.
I also tried the service menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and changed the phone setting to "LTE only", at which point it lost all connection.
I'll see whether the one I've ordered from Tesco works.
Incidentally, I noticed that the specific model is XT1039 - I assume that's the correct version for the UK.

Could it be that the Moto G is not registered as an LTE-enabled phone on Tesco network? I seem to remember it happened to a French carrier some time ago : they didn't sell a specific model of phone themselves, so if you tried to use one on their network it wouldn't recognize it as an LTE phone.

Possible. But in order to test that out, I'd need to unlock the phone using an unlock code. Would that void warranty?
Carrier-unlock is different from bootloader-unlock as you probably know, and it won't void your manufacturer warranty with Motorola.
Tesco have these on payg now, so hopefully if that's the problem, they'll fix it soon

Hmm. If Phones4U placed an EE 4G SIM and a Tesco Mobile 4G SIM in a Galaxy S4 and established an LTE connection on both, yet failed to establish an LTE connection on either SIM when placed in two SIM-free Moto G 4G XT1039 (one yours, and one fresh from Phones4U's own stock), then surely this would suggest a problem with the first batch of SIM-free Moto G 4G XT1039 handsets themselves?

I got EE 4G, near York Railway Station (Museum)..
It took long time to search the network, which was more than the 3G... (H, or H+)
I tried the engineering mode, and forced the phone on LTE only.
Not a problem, the model supports LTE band 3/7/20 (less than IPhone A1457, but enough), I have no idea about the band 7. As far as I know, the 3 are major used by EE and Three and 20 for Voda and O2 in UK.

Hi all,
I'm having the same problem - not getting a 4G connection.
Got my unlocked version also from Tesco Direct, popped in my Three One Plan sim and all I'm getting is either 3G or H or H+
Phoned Three and they said I should be receiving good 4G coverage where I live - central Manchester - so am a bit disappointed
Have also tried that tip to force LTE mode only but just lost connection completely. Could it be a faulty phone?
Any ideas/advice welcome.
Cheers, Dan.
Edit to update:
I do indeed have 4G now
Was told by Three on phone to take it into a Three shop and they'd check my sim card ...so on way there only about 1/4 mile from my home boom - 4G on the phone! So I guess I must live just on the edge of a 4G signal. Oh well at least I know the phone isn't faulty... more like 4G coverage is still a bit choosy
2 months ago a friend of mine bought himself a bad esn motorola droid ultra for Verizon carrier on ebay and it works for T-mobile and AT&T just fine. His droid ultra was running stock android 4.2.2. Just recently I bought myself a bad esn motorola droid ultra for verizon on craigslist that's running android 4.4.4. I'm with T-mobile service, but I like verizon phones so I bought it thinking that it would work for T-mobile. Unfortunately to my surprise when I put in my T-mobile nano simcard, I notice that for the first 2 seconds it would seem like it's connecting because I can see two white bars then all of a sudden it would vanish. And all I see is a black triangle with dark-gray lines next to the wifi signal indicator, and not only that but I would also see something that reads: RESTRICTED ACCESS CHANGED on the upper top left corner. I tried changing the settings to GSM only and still that doesn't work. I tried using the Phone Info app to tweak the settings and still that doesn't work. So my best guesses are 1) sim tray is bad. 2) it has a bad esn so verizon blocked the phone from being used because an Apple tech person told me that Verizon, T-mobile, and AT&T shares one database where they keep and block all bad esn phones. 3) Motorola disabled the gsm radio on the 4.4.4 android update because Verizon didn't want people on T-mobile service using this particular droid ultra phone on the T-mobile network, so that's why Motorola was so quick to release the 4.4.4 android update for it. Well what other reasons for it not working for T-mobile I don't know. I guess I'm stuck with a giant ipod-touch like android media player. Any suggestions on how to get T-mobile to work on it would be great.

Just went tried it with an AT&T nano sim-card from my brother's iphone 5, and the droid ultra was able to pick up signal; and make phone calls and send text messages right off the bat. I figure it could be my T-mobile card so I went and bought a regular standard size T-mobile sim-card, and had it trim down into a nano size sim-card; but unfortunately it still wouldn't work. So my guess is that in order for the droid ultra to recognize the T-mobile sim-card it has to be an original nano sim-card. I will go to Tmobile store and buy a nano sim-card and see if it will make any difference. Thanks for your suggestion.

Dude any bad esn from verizon is not going to work with tmobile anymore. T-Mobile and verizon now share block list. At&t doesn't share verizon's bad imei thats why it works with at&t. Before Verizon bad esn phones worked with T-Mobile now it doesn't.
