I have a day one N5. Not one problem (that wasn't because of KK bugs).
All of this worry would be better redirected to deciding what ROM you're going to put on it. And oh man, what kernel should you use?
I know it's personal preference, but I never understood the color thing. Just don't get it. To each their own, I guess.

No, it's just OP'sluck that he got one with small speaker holes. The 312, 401, 402 aren't revisions. In fact they are the month in which the device was manufactured/packed.
Yes, there was no revision. I have a brand new red one and a 311 white one and there are no differences. Besides color of course Lol
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
The larger speaker holes were for the black one specifically. They probably fixed the glue issue and figured they didn't need the larger speaker holes after a short while. Therefore the red and white ones don't have it. Maybe even the newer black ones don't have them anymore. Never know.
Guys, there are no "revisions" or batches. Devices are produced constantly on a line, where device 9999 may be revision 310 the one after it can be 311. Also no device can be exactly same as the other, thats why some have bigger holes, some have smaller.

Yea I understand. But you would assume all red would have the updated holes since they were made after the change. So now I'm just curious.

There are no "updated holes". Some have big ones. Some have little ones. Its not a conscious decision. Just different machines calibrated differently etc, hence the term "manufacturing tolerances"

That's because they aren't updated holes, just variances in the manufacturing process. Exactly why RootSU said tolerances.

One reason is that they are spares which some users say eventually the nib wears slightly and needs to be replaced, another reason is the different feel that you get when using the other type with the note. The choice is yours!
Actually thats a very good question! All I can tell you is that I didn't change it since I got the tablet mid of August.

When I said eventually, I read on one of the posts in xda somewhere that they changed it after a year or so. The one that comes fitted with the pen apparently has a rubber tip (little bit of grey on the tip) this may wear sooner than the plastic ones. It all depends on usage I suppose and how heavy handed you are on the screen.
Wacom includes extras with all their digital tablets so I suspect that they included the spares out of policy along with different types for the experience for the user.

We're discussing it here, also we have to wait for Nexus 5 Color Control by Francisco Franco
how do you like your note 3?
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/nexus/XmRTZ9IyBl0/XA0awB4IHYMJ
There are a lot of people with the same problem. My new RMA is yellowish when I compare it to my old N5 which I will ship back! Pretty annoying but not noticeable when I just use the phone.
Left - N5 16 GB white, ordered more than a month ago
Right - N5 16 GB black arrived few days ago.
Photo is taken with N7, and unfortunately the difference is not that visible as IRL, but I hope that it is still visible.
(Both phones were set to 100% brightness)
Strange part is that yellow tint is not visible when I tilt my phone away from my eyes and when watching it from CCA 45 degrees angle.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
When i first received my nexus 5 (2 weeks ago) it didn't look all that yellow maybe a tiny bit. i compared it to my nexus 7(2012) and found it a bit too yellow for my liking.
After 2 weeks of usage the yellow looks completely gone to me. i compared again and saw that the nexus 7 was a bit reddish looking.
I saw on some forums that because the glue beneath the screen wasn't dried yet that caused it to be yellow. But now it looks great!
I consider it a hardware defect but its also a panel lottery, how yellow your device is compared to the "warm" and "normal" colors on the N5 is anyone elses guess. Mine was pretty yellow but the phantom kernel based on franco's fixed it right up for me though its a little bit blue now but it is significantly better than a yellow tinted screen.
The yellow tint will go away after a couple weeks. Don't worry about it. It will disappear

same question here, bought it yesterday, and yellow as hell compared to my N7... what do you base on when saying it will disappear?

Yeah mine was yellow compared to the my mom's and brother's moto x. But my whites are better then their whites.
This is why reviews usually suck. They test for several hours and review. No not good enough.
MKBHD did his right (sort of). He did a first impression and didn't like it 100%. Turns out, after a while he realizes it is like a shoe, gotta break her in till it's comfortable.
Patience is key.

so the question remains, has your yellow tint got better/dissapeared over time?
Ya. It was yellow at first compared to the moto X. Now mine has better whites.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I'm hoping some of you can help answer this question.
So i got my nexus 5 yesterday and after turning it on I immediately noticed the screen was very off and yellow compared to the nexus 4.
I did some searching online and found different answers. Some people say it gets better with time as the glue or solution on the screen dries, and other people say it never gets better and they RMA'd it for a new one.
I went back to the carphone warehouse today and one of the guys had his own personal nexus 5 ( good man ) and his screen was a lot better quality and the whites were much better. He agreed immediately that the screen looked poor and got a brand new unit out to do a straight swap but after turning that one on we found it looked the same as mine.
The guy had his from release day so his screen may have had time to break in making the glue / solution claims true.
I said i would give it a week or so to see if the screen got any better and take it from there.
Can any of you confirm if you have found this to be the case?
Ive put a picture below of the difference from my nexus 4 to my nexus 5. Sorry about the poor quality it was taken with my nexus 10 lol.
Thanks
Ye common problem I guess.
Mine is yellowish too, still, its from december 2013 and the yellowish stuff is not gone I guess.
Just try Display Control and test some color profiles, this should make it barely visible with some luck.
Of course you will need a compatible kernel like franco kernel
I just notice it when its close to a real white monitor.
I suggest a Kernel with color controls, as a previous poster Franco Comes to mind.

I had like 6 or 7 different N5's for now in my hand, all with the yellowish tint on it, on some it was better, on some it was even worse.
I even got mine replaced for some dead pixels and a fine crack and did end up with a more yellow display
But srsly, just stop thinking about it. Aslong as you dont compare it to a white monitor you wont notice it after using color controll to fix the colors
Yeah but it should be ok out of the box without having to mess with things to make it look better and manipulate the display. As I said the guys in the shop had an awesome display compared to mine. So its not just that that's how it is cos I've seen that his is better.
A woman at my work also has it so I'll look at hers too on Monday and compare cos I'm off this week

No matter how many times you keep exchanging it, it won't get better. This is just how they're made. It isn't the glue or anything like that, it's the screen itself. The only solution to this is to use a custom kernel with a customized color profile.
If everything else works, I would keep it and do what I suggested. There's more of a chance that a replacement will have other issues than just keeping the one you have if everything else works properly.

I'm having a problem with the back cover of my Nexus 5. When i touch around the flash LED i can hear a suspicious creaking sound. I had never heard a problem like this un this forum. Should i order a replacement?
Thanks
Did you drop your device? Could be a manufacturing fault as well... If you can bear the slight creaking, just ignore it.. Else RMA it...
However, I don't see the point in RMA'ing a device for such a petty reason. What if you could get a device with other defects?
No, I didnt drop it !

Ignore all those rumors. Only way to tell if you have a different newer revision is by checking in the Fast Boot Mode of your device. And as far as I know no production device has anything beyond rev 11. The difference in certain dimensions that you might have noticed is due to the different production assembly lines of various Nexus 5 devices.

Its impossible to notice the Nexus 5 creaking unless you put it in some sort of a chokehold. It's a phone, who squeezes a phone?
Some of these people are just looking for things to pick at instead of enjoying the phone.

I have heard some people voice concern over the volume rocker being loose, small gaps between speaker grill and screen or (in my case) it being slight raise in one corner. My issue with the screen is only something I notice if I run my finger over it slowly and if I point it out to someone I get a chuckle and a head shake lol. Build quality in my experience with every m8 I have seen with the exception of one has been great IMO. The poorly built m8 i did see the rep wouldnt sell it and took it back with out being ask which was nice. Sometimes I will get tiny pieces of lint in the speaker grill but its easy to remove with tape.

Yes, it's a supcase with a clear back, scratched up very badly just from being in my pocket. Also my duo camera and front camera kind of got really foggy, so my pictures came out all blurry. I had nothing else in my pocket and always took good care of it.
You might have a good model then. But once I had one scratch the rest came fairly quickly.

I happened to have taken mine with me on a jetski once by mistake and the results of it gave my phone a wiggly power button (i think, might have already been there) but other than that I've seen little to no faults in it.
Sorry for another question but I gotta ask about signal strength compared to say moto or LG. I went from a droid razr to a G2 last November and have seen some variance in signal.

Build quality for me is nice. I don't have the volume wiggle buttons problem. I will say some times lint from your pockets gets in the speaker grill but taking a cleaning cloth and wipe over the holes does it for me.

Yes, it's a supcase with a clear back, scratched up very badly just from being in my pocket. Also my duo camera and front camera kind of got really foggy, so my pictures came out all blurry. I had nothing else in my pocket and always took good care of it.

I'm sorry to hear that.. man that sucks. If it makes you feel any better I have a dead pixle that just popped up today.

Haha, thanks for the sympathy.
I think a dead pixel might be worse, after you scratch away that film the camera is good as new. Dead pixel all you can do is replace the screen. My camera is great now.

Is it dead or just stuck? Had it happen on my nexus 10 and dead pixel fixer took care of it in 15 minutes.

Sadly not just stuck...
Thanks to all who responded. I finally took the plunge and picked up the m8 and I've been very impressed so far.
