So wanted to play San Andreas, noticed it wants to download game data again, but still reported that it is using 2.4 GB of space, which meant the files should be there. Searched around for them, didn't find, copied them again from PC. It didn't overwrite the files, the app then used 4.8 GB of space (although still reported 2.4 GB). I uninstalled the game, added up the GBs of stuff on my phone, and found that I am missing 2.4 GB. Where did it go?

Maybe I downloaded the files once on my phone, then copied them to PC because not everybody has uncapped internet.
Ah ok. Then maybe you remember where you copied them from

The problem is that when I add up all the used space by apps, music, pictures, movies+free space, I am about 3 GBs short of the amount of total space.

No, I don't. I bought it, let it download all the necessary files once, then copied them to PC so I wouldn't have to download them again when doing full wipes for example.
Disk usage tells me system data is using 3.6 GB. Is it normal for it to use so much?

Nope, GTA wanted to download all files again, while storage under settings told me GTA:SA is using 2.4 GB memory (data+apk). I didn't find the files in Android/obb either.

You can look up for san andreas files and folders on many places with a file explorer
1: SDcard
2: SDcard/android/data
3: Cache/dalvik-cache
4: Data/app
5: Data/app-asec
6: Data/app-lib
7: Data/dalvik-cache
8: Data/data
and more.

Yeah I was the one who called. I even went and exchanged my phone for a new one and the memory problem was still there. Best thing you can do is call and complain really. They told me no one else had complained about the problem to them yet so they had no idea what to say. The more people who complain the bigger the problem becomes and they'll fix it.
But I agree, we will have a fix here on xda before an OTA is issued
So, in a test, I just deleted almost everything on my phone, except the required items for it to run properly. Checked my memory, and it s now LESS available!!!! WTF Samsung?!?!?!?

I think I should have realized the application storage is counted in /data partition. Delete ANYTHING from /system/app doesn't help.
There should be something can be done on partitioning.
I used this method and it worked great for me. I Had 151mb free now I have 369mb free. Scroll down to the How to Delete Fota files and follows the steps.
Here is the link.

Unzip attached files and move them to the data\fota directory.
these files will replace the actual files and will free 250 Mb/
any more questions, look for the thread in development
Did the Fota fix also and got 300mb

The easiest way is to use "root explorer" or "super manager" copy them and drop them in the fota file and it will over write them. I actually made a copy of the original fota files on my sdcard just in case.

If you use root explorer make sure you click on the "Mount r/w" at the top. that ensures you have permissions to write to the /data/fota folder
A little more on this is that you're replacing the Firmware(?) Over The Air (FOTA) files. They are each 125MB so you should gain about 250MB of storage.
Make sure you look at the size, the new files are 0k. I used super manager, it was really easy to use. Don't forget to make the system R/W.
thanx 4 sharing guys, i will try again as soon as i get a break from work...

Have you been making nandroid back ups ? How much is under "Misc" ? Looks around 700mb ? ( but the yellow maker is covering it up )
Looks to me you need to do some house keeping to tidy up the storage space, easy enough to do.
What recovery are you using on the device ?
you've got OVER 2 gigs of app data folders on the internal there, open your file browser and look for folders of apps you've deleted and delete them, also remember YOU HAVE A MICROSD SLOT, you can add more storage for music and movies.
do any of your streaming apps keep a large "buffer", could try clearing app data.

That's just the way it is. Kind of like when you insert a 32gb micro sd card you automatically lose nearly 4gb down to 29.7gb.
If you've been making backups chances are the cwm folder has a nice size file well over 1gb

Pretty sure you can go to a folder browser then couldn't u sort all them by size by bigger sizes descending. So what i mean is the biggest files would show up on top. Then you could look around and see if one of the bigger files is not needed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1970961 here is another thread talking about pretty much the same thing. I agree with one of the posters, about just swapping the storage with the external sd card. I haven't personally had great luck with android 4.2.x, but there is a great script for p311x on xda that swaps them on ics and jb 4.1.x just fine. Its what I use, and also why im not running anything past 4.1.2.

Low memroy or low storage space ? 2 hugely different issues !!!
In stock ICS or JB , the samsung app widget has an option to close apps and to clear RAM..
If low storage , connect to PC using USB and clear unused junk in your sd and external..
Hi, I have not updated my phone in a while, I currently have cyanogenmod version (11-20140221-NIGHTLY-t769)(android version 4.4.2). I am planning on updating to newer versions of cm11 but I've had this one issue that has been bugging me for a while now. I think there is a problem with the storage on my phone. Whenever i try to download something it says "not enough space available". I am aware that some apps can not be moved to sd card but I am getting different reads when i check my phone storages. When i connect my phone to the computer it says (Internal storage 1.39 Gb totalsize, 920mb free) and (sdcard 7.38gb totalsize,2.78free) Is it normal to have 2 internal storages? I've been trying to resolve this issue for a while now but I do not know what the problem is. Below are some screenshots of what i am talking about:

Also, is it okay to delete the files listen from /clockworkmod?
Thanks in advance!!!
