[Q] Xperia Play not booting, new flex cable, red LED - General Questions and Answers

Hello Fellow Forum Users and Gurus
I need some serious advice in regards with my Xperia Play R800i. I have had this phone for over two years now and have taken it in for servicing before (just for cracked digitizer, feel like I paid way more than I should have since digitizer costs a fraction of what I paid and is quite easy to install) and now I have an even bigger problem:
> My Xperia Play's flex cable wore out and my touchscreen was no longer responsive; in addition to this, my face buttons (home, search, menu, back).
> I purchased a new flex cable and had it installed - the face buttons work, but the screen does not display anything - my phone would flash a purple light and vibrate. Icing on the cake is that once I turn on my phone, the phone and battery start getting real hot within minutes.
Also, whenever it doesn't power on the LED flashes red (insufficient power going to phone? Hardware failure?)
> I decided to have a serviceman assess my phone, see if the cable was set in properly - he came back to me and said that there may be possible liquid damage that could have occurred before and only now presenting itself since I changed the flex cablethough this seems highly unlikely:laugh:.
> Tried to boot into fastboot and flashmode and instead of flashtool picking up my phone name, it picks the serial number and wont flash anything to it.
> I headed over to another serviceman who then mentioned that there may be some mis-communication (I think its what he said, accent threw me off) - I assumed he meant the flex cable could be defective? Or maybe my IC board has kicked the bucket?
Thinking of switching back my old flex cable but wanna hear from you guys what think it could be.
P.S. I have seen similar threads asking about flashing LEDs and flex cable issues, one thread in particular referred the poster to an application called SEtool but, for one, I cant use it since my phone (1) burns up fast and (2) wont boot up most of the time (drains/"kills" the battery whenever it heats up).

[Q] Nexus 5 screen showing colorful static

Has anyone come across this before? I was watching a video on MX Player not too long ago, and it seems to have resulted in a permanent colourful static for the phone.
I can't really tell if it's doing anything, but when I go through the motions of resetting it or booting into bootloader, the screen does not change at all.
Interestingly the volume buttons are still working, and if I press the area of the screen where I think the buttons are (e.g., the back/home/programs buttons) I get the right vibrations. Which leads me to believe my screen is broken, and that it's a hardware fault. I'm hoping pretty hard this isn't the case, as my phone is only two months old and it was a replacement for a 6 month old Nexus 4 which had stopped charging.
Anyone come across this before? I'm hoping there's a kind of solution somewhere out there... To make matters worse I bought this phone via a parallel importer AND I'm currently overseas and won't be back till the end of January.
Sigh. Photo of screen is as attached - please forgive the terrible quality as I had to use my laptop webcam.
Thanks in advance, everyone!

Only time I've seen something like this was when my integrated graphics card on my desktop overheated, everything still worked, but colorful static everywhere. I'd let it cool down for a while, chances are it was pretty hot when it did that, and see if high temps might make it happen again.
I just had the same thing happen. Phone had been in my pocket and I had just taken it out to check the time maybe 10 minutes before it happened. The only difference with mine was I bumped into a table and hit the phone in my pocket. It does have a case on it and there is no sign of damage at all such as a cracked screen or anything. The static only lasts for a few seconds and thats right after I force it to reboot. After that it just goes to an all black screen. My LED indicator light is still flashing at me telling me I have an email though so I'm not sure what the deal is.
Were you able to resolve this issue? I too just experienced this issue as well and my phone is currently unusable. Thanks!
Do a full wipe as in wiping the entire phone and making it as if you just got it out of the box. if it persist RMA

Hi, I broke my screen (really bad smash) and had have this static on my new screen. The new screen was apparently fully tested. When using the slim port i can display on my TV and the digitizer works fine, its just this same colour static on the handset. I am now waiting for a replacement USB flex (it was a bit bent in the break) and i expect the new USB flex will fix it. If not then its a bad screen.
Will post the results when i get the parts
Fixed!
Hi,
My new USB flex arrived today. I installed it and found my screen is working perfectly.
The first pic is the same colour static that the op had.. Second one is the USB flex board / ribbon. Ebay for 20 Euro. Please remember that USA users are LG D820 and Europe/rest of works LG D821. I think its important for this part as the aerials connect here ans they are different in USA.
Good luck everyone

Static screen and freezing
Hi All,
Need help here with my 6 month old Nexus 5. It has been pretty good with no issues but since last evening, it started behaving weird. The chronological events are as follows
1. While browsing on Chrome some websites were not scrolling intermittently. This was only in the browser.
2. After about 10 mins of the above behavior the entire phone froze and didn't release itself. I had to force reboot by holding the power button down for about 10 secs. When the screen came on, it was the static screen
3. I again pressed the power button a couple of times but no use. Held it again for 10 secs, then phone rebooted and everything was fine.
4. Continued to use the phone and everything was normal until this afternoon, when the phone again froze while browsing a website
5. Since then the phone screen shows the static and if I press the power button once, the screen switches off and press again the screen comes on with the display showing properly. I can now only perform one touch which is registered and the screen freezes. If I switch off and on again the next screen / action is shown which is the action I did in the previous touch. Every time it registers one touch and I have to switch off and on again to see the next screen. Sometimes the phone just shows static and I have to wait a few seconds (30 sec) before using it again.
6. If I make a call to my phone, I hear one ring and then it is busy tone like I've cancelled the call. However the phone does not show the incoming call.
My phone has been intact and is well protected with screen guards and case. There is no physical misuse / abuse of the phone. I managed to shut down the phone and enter recovery. Here as well it only registered one touch, though the phone was processing and moving the next step. I somehow managed to initiate a factory reset through the settings, but no use.
Now in about 2-3 hrs the phone has become completely useless. I'm uncertain what the problem is, all my touch inputs are registered and processed. The screen just doesn't refresh to the next and requires a power off/on. I picked up this phone in the US and now in India. So I can't RMA the phone and I don't have warranty for this in India.
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

I'm getting the same issue. Tried soft and hard reset. Opened her up and seated all cables. The issue is still persisting. Is replacing the USB flex the way to go?
Hey I have a nexus 5 32GB and the screen started to do weird things and now it isn't working at all. Its the same in recovery mode also do I think that it's not a software problem.
I think there is an issue with the motherboard. Please help me out.
Thanks in advance.

Same thing, Screen now black. Won't turn on...
Hey everyone, I know that this is kind of late to the thread, but I have what I believe is the same problem as everybody else here. I had my Nexus 5 in my pocket for maybe five minutes, and in between the times that I put it in my pocket and took it out again to reply to a text, the screen went all colorful and static on me (Red tint, almost as if I had twilight on, but I didn't). I tapped the back, and the colors went back to normal, but the digitizer wasn't responding to touch. Then, It went black. No color, the speakers weren't working, neither was the backlight on the display. I took it apart, and figured its either the USB flex cable (which looked frayed), or the mainboard. If its the USB flex cable, then I know I can repair it. If it's the mainboard... well, as a sixteen year-old who has no current source of income, I'm out of a $400 phone.
Pictures attatched. Thanks!

I took the phone the LG service center and the technician seemed to know this issue and immediately said that the USB flex cable needs to be changed. The entire fix took about 5 mins and the phone is working fine since then.
Sorry for the delayed response.
I hate to necro up this thread but I'm having similar problems to the op with my nexus 5. About two weeks ago I saw my screen get grainy just like the op and many others mentioned and then the screen went completely black. The screen still "turns on" but it's just black with the backlight on. I can hear notifications and other things and I'm hoping that all I need to replace is just the flex cable. If it's a problem with the logic board then I'm screwed basically.
Anyway that's my story. Bought the flex cable and it'll be here by tuesday so I'll find out then if I'm lucky or not. Fingers crossed.

Hey man, did you ever try this out and get it to work? I have the same problem and was thinking of trying this out but wanted confirmation first.
Thanks!
Just wanted to post here to say that this thread just saved me a lot of money!
Had the same issue (static showing on the screen). Local phone repair shop told me it needed a new screen, without even looking at it(!), and it would be £120 + labour. Told them I would think about it, and came home and did some more research, found this thread. Ordered a replacement USB flex cable from eBay, and fit it by following a YouTube tutorial, and now the phone is back working fine. brilliant!
Thanks xda!
I had a problem where my screen looked like an old CRT TV with particles flashing all over on anything with a static dark background. Any ideas

[Q] ASUS TF300T stuck on boot. Can anyone help?

Hello,
I have searched the threads but cannot find a situation similar to mine so am posting, but apologise in advance if this has been solved before. It's a bit of a long story. About a year ago I was foolish enough to have stood on my TF300T, cracking the screen. The tablet was still working, but it would not register touch. I put it to one side and left the battery to drain. For various reasons I have just got around to replacing the screen.
I found a screen and digitiser of the correct version for my UK TF300T (version G01) and I'd thought the replacement went without any problems, although I was slightly unsure of one digitiser connection. On pressing the power button (I had pre-charged the battery) the screen came to life just as I'd left it as if coming out of sleep rather than being off for a year. It was short lived though and soon the tablet went to black and would not turn on. I thought maybe it was the digitiser connection so went back in to re-fit it. It was only then that I noticed the power switch on the logic board itself under the plastic shell. I hadn't switched it to off before (duh) so did so then, refitted the digitiser cable much more securely, switched the power back on and tried to boot, but nothing happened at all, apart from the power LED flashing orange. After some experimenting (trying to charge the tablet again etc) I found I could only boot by charging the dock and plugging the tab in the dock, but the tablet would only get as far the ASUS screen (not the 3D one, just the flat lettering), with the 'device is unlocked' message in the top left corner and stops there. I can turn it off, but can't boot into recovery at all. And that's where I am now.
Things I have tried - a different logic board from a TF300T's scrounged from eBay which also had a cracked screen (this, weirdly, seemed to have the same problem as mine), swapping various parts out from some other TF300T's (without logic boards) from eBay and contacting the device through Sandix's ADB GUI (after downloading and extracting the SDK), which registered no device.
My best guess at what's happened is that the battery on the tab itself is totally gone (as are the three other batteries I have accumulated) after a last valiant effort and either that going or me messing with the on off switch has some how corrupted the boot process. Is that possible? What do people think? I could buy a brand new logic board, but the only ones I seem to be able to find have some different brand chips on them and appear to be different versions - versions probably not compatible with my digitiser. :S
I am quite a novice here (and maybe poking around the inside of my tab wasn't a great idea, but then neither is wearing boots in the house) so any help would be greatly appreciated! Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to give a detailed report. Let me know if you have any questions. Although unlocked, it is running the stock ROM.
I would make sure drivers are reinstalled properly, by removing the drivers, reboot the computer, reinstall the drivers and then reboot again.
See if that works.
I had something similar happen on a different tablet. That was one from Box.co.uk, but after trying to get it fixed under warranty (and missing the end date by 1 day), I opened it myself. When the charger was plugged in, it showed the charging LED, but it didn't actually charge it.
I don't suppose you've checked the terminals for the battery to the mainboard? On this other tablet, one had broken off. I re-soldered it on, charged it fully and it worked fine.

[Q] Problem With Moto G fallen, Broken Screen

First i must say hello to all recently i have bought 2 phones one for me and another to my girlfriend the phones are a moto g cdma from verizon mine is working ok but the other stopped working after a fall
My girlfriend had the phone but then fall to the floor
The phone shut down, also the lcd was completely broken, but the digitizer was intact. so i know that the digitizer is fused with the lcd, so if i need to replace it i just need to buy a new lcd+digitizer. alright let's tall about the logic board and battery
i oppened the phone and test the battery it says 3.7 V with a friend multimeter and i have removed it.
when i diassembly the logic board from the screen also took off the front camera, the flex also broken, but since the screen will not work anymore this will not be a problem i think.
well i just got the logic board, and wanted to connect to my pc to recover the photos but when i did it the pc didn't recognized it but when i connect it to my pc or a wall charger, a white light (notification led) turns on and doesn't turn of only if i disconnectthe usb cable.
i thought that i need the battery connected to turn it on. i just connected the battery flex , and connected it again. this time the led won't turn on instantly. just like a minute and then the notification led turns on, i don't know if that means that the logic board is broken too.
i just need to know if i need to connect the screen also to turn it on? because i don't want to purchase a replacement and see that the logic board is not working too.
if you have some thoughts to share with me just write here, please i hope you can help me
thanks in advance, henser.

Black screen after getting hot while charging

Hello together,
I have a Z5 (6653) that didn't start anymore and got extremely hot while charging. To be more clear: after connecting the phone to the charger the red LED turned on, then after about 10 seconds later it turned off again. From this moment on the phone's back started to get extremely hot. The source of the heat is about 1cm right and 1 cm down to the back camera (so you can say 1cm diagonal from the camera to the phone middle). Because of this I doubt it has to do with the battery as it should heat the lower two-third and not the upper third of the phone. Maybe the processor is at this place?
I tried to connect the phone in flash mode with the PC and it connected, but disconnected after a few seconds, probably because battery was empty. I repeated this procedure (connecting to charger, disconnecting, reconnecting, connecting to PC) a few days and suddenly the red LED kept on and the phone didn't get hot anymore.
So I charged the phone fully and wanted to start it, but the screen won't turn on anymore. Connecting it to the PC and the Phone drive (MTP) is displayed but empty, because you need to unlock screen. Also I hear the connecting sound of the phone and touch feedback sounds.
I tried the following things:
Xperia Companion Repair
Flashtool flashing newest ROM
Flashtool downgrading to 32.0.A.6.152_R5B (LP ROM)
Nothing helped. Well, the idea it is an hardware issue might be at hand, but maybe there is something else I can try first?
And if it is an Hardware issue, what is the cause? The Display itself? Then why was a single point at the phone back the source of heat and not a large area on the phone front?
A short summary:
Phone gets hot while connected to charger
Battery won't charge (LED indicator turns off after few seconds)
Source of heat is 1cm to the right and down to the back camera; after 2 minutes whole phone is hot and you can't recognize the source
After days of repeating the action (connect to charger, disconnect, connect to PC, connect to charger) it suddenly charged the battery and didn't get hot anymore
Display won't start anymore; still responsive
Tried Xperia Companion Software repair
flashed latest Stock ROM
flashed Lollipop Stock ROM
Phone has locked bootloader and is/was not rooted. I'm grateful for all help!
I guess its a dead screen maybe u droped it and the pins of the screens got ejected from the motherboard.. Ignoring the fact that it was empty of charge and you charged it.
From what i understand that the phone is working but there is no screen.
The best thing u can do is to check a hardware store that is capable of diagnosing the issue.
Im not helping here i know but wanted to share my thoughts..
Gd luck with that.
Thanks for this anyway. But phone didn't drop.
The fact that the phone wasn't charging and got hot instead at the beginning is very irritating. Especially that it wasn't the front but a point at the back near the camera. Is there a way to check if it's a Display issue and not a Mainboard/Processor/other Chip issue?
At least in Germany are a lot of stores that aren't too competent at all. But nobody would tell you, so its very helpful to know as much as possible before going to a store.
I think it might have something to do with the gpu inside the soc? The heat might have burned something inside the mainboard (how hot was it btw, like running intensive apps or even hotter than that?) Another thing that might have happened is the display cable is loose.
I've seen some Z5's screens and they're not that easy to die.
The best thing I can suggest is that you repair it in a trusted shop that lets you observe the repair procedure directly (open the phone, take the parts out, identify the problem).
Good luck with your phone.

I never played any game so it is hard to compare, but I never had a phone in my hands that got this hot before. You didn't get instantly burned touching the phone but it was already inconvenient hot for your fingers/hand.
There might be some trust able stores to find, but I doubt somebody will let you observe it, not even Apple store does. If you see the trick of how to repair it easy and fast, you might do it yourself next time. And it is also a question of the price. If I can buy a used but totally unharmed Z5 for the same price, why should I let it repair?
As far as I could see in Germany repairing Display starts at 99€ for the Z5. Buying display with adhesive would start at 49€. But if they change the Display and it's still broken you have to pay for the Display and also for the mainboard i.e.

S7 - Wont start after battery&camera replacement.

Hi, my situation is; got a galaxy s7, the rear camera was bad, bought a new original one, stripped the phone down, fitted the camera, followed the tutorial (ifixit), put a new battery in at the same time, now rebuilt it all, (without the rear case on so can still easily take it apart again) and it wont turn on, wont go into safe mode, recovery mode, soft reset etc, tried every method, also via usb to my laptop, however it does charge, it comes up on the screen with the green battery icon and the LED light illuminates as if it is charging. Therefore, the screen is not damaged. And as far as i can see, all the connections are back joined onto the motherboard, it just wont boot up.
Also, if this makes any difference, I am running the Superman rom.
Any help would be massively appreciated as I have scowered so many websites searching for someone with a similar issue with a solution and I'm struggling, massively!
Are you sure you have connected the battery as required and no other circuit was touched?
Also, do you have the certainty this "new" battery works? I suggest you do the next 2 things:
1. Take this battery out and connect your old one. this way you can check if the new battery is faulty.
2. If doesn't work, even after inserting again the old battery, take your phone to a local repair center. (probably you messed something up).

I'd start by reversing everything you did until it powers on again, if it still doesn't power on with the old camera module & old battery in then start looking at other things, i'd probably start with the battery though as it is a power issue
The new battery charges and it comes up on my screen showing the green battery image charging so it is being recognised. Tried the old battery and its the same situation. I genuinely believe I didnt accidently short anything and im confident everythinf is where it needs to be. Ive just booked in to go to the samsung shop this weekend so hopefully they manage to find skmething althpugh probably end up costing a daft amount. Thanks for the replies so far

New camera module? Did you remove it to see if it is causing the problem?
I know there are different sensors, and if the wrong one is replaced the camera won't work, not heard about it stopping the phone booting but you never know
Just taken it to the local phone repair shop, lets hope they can find something with it. Keep you updated. Thanks so far.
