Refund or ANOTHER Replacement? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've now had about 6 or 7 replacements of Nexus 5's with varying ***K numbers and finally Google have asked me if I would accept a full refund instead of a replacement.
The main issue I've been getting that isn't being fixed by them is nobody can hear ever me properly as it's always muffled on their end although I can hear them perfectly.
If I were to get a replacement, there's a 99.99% chance that the issue will still be there but I love everything else about the phone too much.
If I were to get a refund, what alternative is there that's as good as the Nexus 5 offering a pure Android experience?

Weird... Since I bought this phone people say they hear me more clearly now.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Since the problem exists for everyone I can guarantee you the problem will still be there. Accept a refund or wait for a software fix. Cover up teh 2nd microphone to see if that si any better.

It's noise cancellation. depends on where you are (how much background noise and how close to the second microphone the noise is)

Doesn't matter why, but its crystal clear for me.

Well, there are obviously no devices which provide the pure android experience except the GPE editions of HTC One etc.
However, if you like to root, then you can basically buy any high end device and flash a custom rom and enjoy the pure aosp experience. But the Nexus 5 is Google's baby and the awesome support you will get here won't be available elsewhere! Nexus 5 is a cut above the rest when it comes to development
I would strongly suggest you to wait for Google's next update
---------- Post added at 06:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:49 PM ----------
Well, I won't say it's crystal clear but there isn't much muffling on my device. Yes, as rootsu explained, it surely does depend upon the environment you're in.

Well it does matter why because it's the "why" that teaches us why some people notice the problem and some people don't.

6 or 7 times, honestly i don't know how you have the patience. Luckily I haven't experienced this problem, what i do know is that when i had the S2 i used to get very good call quality. Its noise cancellation worked to well. I'd imagine its the same for the S4 and S5.
One thing I will say though, I don't think i'd happier with any phone currently more than the Nexus 5. I had the LG G2 briefly, expecting it to be a superior N5 I was shockingly disappointed. The build quality is relatively poor compared to the N5 and the screen isn't big enough for me to notice the difference. The back was a finger print nightmare (though the white version of the LG G2 might disguise this) and I personally found the buttons on the back awkward.
The deal breaker ultimately was knowing i'd not be able to get pure AOSP for the LG G2, not in the same manner as the Nexus 5, in that it comes with stock vanilla rom, to which i can simply add Xposed frameworks and tweak every aspect of my rom. The G2's would always be custom version from CM or AOKP etc, (which isn't necessarily a bad thing for most).
Anyway, all this made me appreciate the N5 even more. (The white one )

various results of it being successfully disabled in build.prop

I've had this issue on every single N5 I've had from Google. Every single person complains they can't hear me properly or I sound like I'm far away from the mic. Blocking the top noise cancelling mic helps but I really don't want to have to hold my phone a certain way just to speak to my contacts (reminds me of the iPhone 4 antenna issue).
I'll just get a replacement again one last time and then try to find out if they will be addressing the issue in a future update or something.
I don't think there's any other phone that's as good as the N5.
The HTC One is too old now and I can't get a GPE version here in the UK. Also I'm too used to having 3 buttons as opposed to HTC One's 2 button approach.
I hate Samsungs from the horrible Touchwiz to their plasticky uninspiring build quality. To get vanilla, I'd need to root which means a void warranty.
Not keen on the LG G2 or Sony's for similar reasons about voiding warranty as Samsungs to get vanilla.

No offence but what was the point in creating this thread then? You've pretty much explained everything in your previous post. The device which you're looking for is a Nexus and you yourself have pointed out as to why you don't want to buy any other devices!
In any case, lets just be patient and hope that THE BOSS releases this fix in their next update! Cheers!

I've sent Google an angry email regarding this issue asking them to look into fixing it.
In the meantime, I've asked for another replacement.

No but by testing that you identify that it IS noise cancellation.
Asking for a replacement is useless. I mean literally useless. The new one WILL have this issue. There is no fix yet. Either wait until there is or get a refund.

I'm not settling for a phone that is useless as a 'phone'. I'm going to keep getting them to send me replacements until they understand there's an issue here that needs addressing. I'll just keep doing it until the Nexus 6 comes out then sell on my latest replacement as a brand new unopened handset and get the Nexus 6.
If this was the iPhone, they'd have addressed and fixed it a long time ago!! Why should we have to suffer this issue.

I just got mine in the mail today and have yet to open it. I am seeing all these post with the issues of the phone and honestly they have given me allot of second thoughts. Now i am debating selling it and getting an LG G2 instead. If i open it and play with it i will immediately kill the value of the phone.
Anyone else feel like they didn't get quite what they were expecting?

Do you guys even read? The OP is not complaining about his Nexus 5 unit he received and he hasn't opened it yet so he can preserve the ability to return the unit and get a full refund. The OP is implying that he has been seeing issues with the Nexus 5 which he is a bit concerned about and is not sure if he wants to keep it or not. The OP didn't imply that his unit is defective nor did he say what he received is not what he expected. Sheesh learn to read.

Best phone I've ever owned. Can't speak to the G2, but I've owned Droid Charge, Droid RAZR, GNexus, GS3, Nexus 4, GS4, and Moto X. Nexus 5 is leagues better than all of those except the GS4. With the GS4, it comes down to preference, and I prefer the N5.

You're making decisions based on issues other people are experiencing.. Nothing is ever perfect considering this is the first batch of new N5's. Overtime LG and Google will work together to identify what the problems are with the devices. Especially when you aren't going to open the box and speculate that it "might" have issues. Even if if your phone had issues, you could always call Google and request an RMA to get a replacement device. Why bother buy the device if you're going to think twice about it?
Holy crap the reading comprehension of some of you guys is in the gutter. Did you not read anything i wrote? I made it pretty clear that from reading of the issues in other people post that its made me hesitant on even opening the box. That was the whole point of the post and was asking if other who had been using their phones were disappointing or would take back the action of buying. So next time you want to jump down someones throat READ the post.
As far as the guy that said i had to open it, are you serious? What do you think "New in Box" mean... it means unopened 99% of the time. Ive sold hundreds of unopened phones, they sell much faster when they are new and unopened.

Cool story bro.
I love this phone. It's fast, fluid, and a Nexus. Can't compare to a G2 or GS4 or any other current Gen phone because I haven't used any (coming from gnex), but the phone just feels great in my hand.
I'm assuming you ordered the phone because you wanted the Nexus experience over another OEM. If that's the case, go for it and enjoy your device. I haven't had any issues with mine at all and there are fixes out for some already (saw a thread here about a fix for the jiggly power button). And any real defects should be covered by warranty.
I say go for it. If you really want a different device, then sell it I guess.

Yes i wanted a unbloated Android, i have in the last 6 months had an S4 and a HTC One (current phone), i can get both of them with google editions however they both lose things(HTC One loses lots of cam functions with play edition) with that. When i saw the Nexus 5 it was a phone made for the Google edition and that was the selling point for me. I saw the fix for the button but considering we all just paid $400 for these phones we should not have to open the phone and put paper inside it so a button doesn't rattle lol

First of all this stuff isn't supposed to be talked about on XDA. Second of all, in what planet do people not notice needle holes in a speaker?! The person inspecting your phone either has to be blind, or close to blind.
The thing is, I don't think they'll inspect it.

You are sadly mistaken my friend. Of course they do. It's actually pretty easy to tell if this phone was opened. Once they see that, they'll open it, then happily charge your credit card. If you don't think they will, then take a chance and send it to them.

Pretty sure they will. Most the time they do some sort of inspection to ensure it was a warranty problem.
The thing is, my tampering of the device didn't cause the problems with my model, I've had them from the beginning, but attempted a work around instead of sending it back in the first place.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I was mainly just wondering if this can be disputed and looking for options from people who have had successful or unsuccessful experiences.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
You can dispute it if you flashed a custom rom / rooted and have a hardware failure that is unrelated. If you open the phone up, you void the warranty as per the terms and conditions you bought the device under. There is no disputing that. The warranty is void and thats that.

Why didn't you just RMA it before opening it up. You may have gotten a better unit with a better speaker. At least that's what happened with me. I just received a replacement (it always said no signal for some reason) and it has a much better speaker than my first one. What exactly are you returning the phone for?

Because it wasn't purchased under my credit card it was purchased under another persons that gave me permission to use theirs, as I do not own a credit card. I thought the only way I'd be able to fix my issue would be to do that speaker mod, which improved the audio sound greatly, but it's still not up to standard compared to my brother's brand new nexus 5, which is why I want to return it. It was shipped with flaws to begin with and my modifications did nothing but improve the issue. I was under the impression that a warranty wouldn't be voided if it was a hardware issue that wasn't caused by the user as a friend of mine managed to get a replacement on his.

The thing is, he doesn't have the improved model he purchased his 2 weeks after I had purchased mine. I asked him if I could test his speakers, then he heard mine. His are twice as loud. I consider that a flaw, tbh.
Considering that there's no "Warning you might void your warranty sticker" I could easily dispute it. Especially if you're going by the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act.

Hello all, I am new to the Nexus 5. I bought mine two days ago. I was really impressed with it at first, but now I'm being told by everyone who I speak to on calls, I sound distant, fuzzy and my mic is crackling. Also, there's a few black dots on the screen. I have done some quick research and found lots and lots of information regarding this issue. However, what I really want to know is, considering this is annoying me like crazy, is it even worth returning it and getting another one? I seen a few posts on other sites and one user had returned 5 times and still had faults. I don't know if I can trust LG again. The problem is, I love this phone so much! :/ I have 30 days to return my phone because of these faults and can either get a refund or an exchange. I don't even think there are any alternatives in the £300 price range :/ I sold my iPhone 5C for this as well! :/

That's certainly promising. I can't see how they'd be able to overlook such a big hardware flaw if it is hardware, so I guess software could be the problem.

I'm definitely not pretending it doesn't exist. I guess I've never noticed the issue since I never used video recording on this phone. Also no one has told me anything about the call quality having static. If its a known issue that you can bear with then I'd say wait it out and see if the issue gets rectified with the next software update but then again black dots on the screen might be a bit annoying for me to view so I'd probably still do the replacement.

It is a well known issue and has easy fixes as well. Simply covering the secondary mic is one of them, check out the threads discussing this issue for more help.
Personally I haven't had anyone complain about my voice and they seem to hear me fine for the most part so I've not taken any action. You also mentioned you may have dead pixels and if so you might want to RMA because of that.
The vast majority of users don't come on to report "all is well here" and so when you read forums you get a concentration of people with issues, or some unlucky/overly picky RMAers.

The vast majority of users don't come on to report "all is well here" and so when you read forums you get a concentration of people with issues, or some unlucky/overly picky RMAers.

Thank you for your replies. I will go in store tomorrow and discuss my options with a staff member.
Just to update:
I returned my N5, the lady at Carphone was very friendly. She replaced it with a new black Nexus 5 and said its one fresh off the production line. All in all, I'm very impressed glad I returned

So far, no black dots - improved calls - bigger speaker and microphone holes and tight volume rocker buttons. GPS is accurate, and no light bleed. All in all, I'm very impressed glad I returned

I don't know - maybe the administrators/mods can do that, but I don't see an option to change username.
Theres a link somewhere to contact Admin. That's how I did it.

Camera focusing

Does anyone's unit have trouble focusing right in startup? Mine sometimes takes a couple seconds to focus from a very fuzzy picture and then is like lightning

Also dealing with this issue. Shaking it helps it focuses. I can almost hear a click as if something is stuck and becoming unstuck when shook.
It clicks on mine too. Weird.

Yup, guessing it is the OIS engaging. Wonder if this is hardware or software...
I'm not sure. Imma hitch a tmobile store and ask them ...probably try for a replacement.
I had the Note 4 which was plagued by this issue in a large number of units. However, I got the s6 (edge) and have not had this problem at all. In the Note 4, people had to get replacements to truly fix the issue permanently.
I think I am gonna go and get a replacement. I hate paying this much for a device and have issues. I do love the phone other than this one issue.
Went to T-mobile today to show the camera problem and get a replacement. The rep got on the phone and about 25 minutes later I was told I'll be getting my replacement in the mail tomorrow! Just have to ship back the defective unit once the new one comes. Hopefully the new one won't have any issues.
Just disable "auto HDR"
Problem solved.

Well, at the risk of sounding condescending, HDR is a more complicated process than just simply taking a photo. Typically, it's going to involve capturing multiple shots at different exposures and combining them through software. I'd imagine that the camera is trying to compensate for this and is taking an extra second in contrast detection to determine it's focus point, which to me, would be totally expected. Turning it off and finding a faster focus would be the trade off (and photography is ALL about trade offs lol).
Tried.... problem not solved.

Usually only a problem in low light or the first time you open the camera that day in my experience once auto HDR is disabled..

On phone with tmobile now....let see what they say

I didn't even talk to tech support. As soon as I said the problem they transferred me to someone and a brand new phone us being overnighted to me. Must be a semi common problem. Idk. Love the phone othere than this Issue.
UGHH. I have the very same issue. I spent 2 hours yesterday setting up my phone and would hate to have to return it. I'm beyond annoyed by this. Let us know if this is a defect with the hardware or if it's just the OIS needing to adjust. I don't wan to go through the trouble of returning my phone and having the same issue.
Also, is there a good way to back up my phone? Helium sadly does not work, but I'm wondering if Samsung backup will do the trick, in case I need to get a new phone.

Can you please let us know how it goes? I'd like to get this sorted out, but don't want to take the time to set up my phone again, if it's just an issue with OIS.
Thanks!
I'll let yall know when I gety new phone.
Mine got worse (go figure) and now it refuses to focus unless I shake the phone.
Replacement on the way...

Mine did too. I couldn't get it to focus anymore, even when shaking. For it while it seemed like it was getting better, but then NOPE. My replacement is on the way as well. What are you guys using to back up and restore your s6. Usually I use TI, but I wanted to see how the samsung play situation played out first before rooting.

[Q] Should I buy this phone?

Hi guys i'm in a need of a new phone I and want to buy the OPO but I have heard many bad things about this device, all the bugs, yellow screen etc so should I buy this phone or not? What phone would you recommend? Thanks!
Its a great phone overall, The price for it right now is great for the phone. Its the cheapest thing for the specs that you get. Tho its an old 801 Snapdragon Chip, it gets the work done even by today's standards.
There has been bugs but those has been gone by now.
The Yellow tint happens to people once in a while now but mostly can be solved by colors or some fixes by users.
The Touchscreen inresponsivesness has now been solved with a new firmware that fixes that and its really great now.
The bugs are still here but come on dude. Its Lolipop, all the bugs that are present here are usually present everywhere else since its lolipop.
Overall, yes i do recommend this phone only if ur willing to live with the bugs and slowly let them be squashed by Devs, CM, and time
Thank you for the answer I found one bug that that still are unresolved the late calls issue I live in Sweden and I use a carrier called Comviq, many people have reported that they can't recive calls and when they reboot their devices they get a ton of missed calls
No. Too old and outdated now. Get something better.

This is more on the CM bug sides and is currently being fixed. Some of the issues go slowly by time so yeah.

The One Plus One is not old nor outdated. Its still a great phone for the price. Not everyone goes mainstream and buys the LG G4 or Galaxy S6/S6 Edge. I would love to buy them cause they are great phones but hey if ur talking about Specs, its something we lose but if you're gonna talk price, the OPO wins all the mainstreams by a huge mile.

Indeed, the 801 and 3 GB RAM is outdated and even the calculator app is lagging. Also the screen is 1080p only which is soooo 2010. /sarcasm
This isn't a CM bug maybe a lollipop bug, people have tried with other roms and they still receive late calls
