I know how to use adb and I'm not too inexperienced with it. Is there a way that I could push files to the system partition without having root on the device? I'm on stock ROM and I do not want to unlock the boot loader or root it, I just need to push a file to the system partition.

I am pretty sure you can only push files to the SD card without root. Rooting/ unlocking doesn't hurt. Try helium for a backup.
I know it doesn't hurt, I just came back to the stock ROM after using my own compiled ROM. I just didn't want to mod it except that one file, thanks though

Hmmm. Not sure if you can access /data without root via adb. Helium backs everything up so maybe it can. Try it. Im never unrooted enough to know

Unlocking your bootloader is what deletes everything. And no, if you're not unlocked, there's no way around it. Just back up everything to a PC beforehand.

Rooting won't erase anything, however unlocking the bootloader, if you have't already will wipe all of your data.

You can't root without first unlocking the bootloader. If you don't know that maybe you shouldn't be messing around with your phone, at least not until you've done all your homework.

It cannot be done. You must use fastboot commands to flash a custom recovery first, then you can root from there
Well you unlocked the bootloader so why not fallow the next step wile you were plugged in?

dd if=recovery.img of= recovery partition
You'd have to make sure you know the recovery partition precisely, there's a thread here some where, Google nexus 5 partitions xda
Ps, make sure you know the exact command because dd commands can be dangerous

I think you still needed Odin to put a recovery on, unless Mobil Odin worked on your s2. I had a skyrocket where Mobil Odin didn't work. There is nothing like Mobil Odin for the nexus 5.
It was a backdoor method exynos abuse apk you could root without Odin.

The galaxy s2 had a different version of android than the nexus 5 with different (known) security vulnerabilities that could be exploited to achieve root.
The Nexus 5 / KitKat has no known vulnerabilities that can be exploited. You must believe us when we tell you, there is no way to root the phone without a computer using fastboot!

If you're unlocked and rooted, you can use flashify to flash recovery from the phone. Like mobile Odin though, it still needs root

We only need to unlock the bootloader to flash recovery. If an exploit has been found in kitkat, it is possible to root without unlocking the bootloader.
This could mean a full, end-to-end rooting process without the need to use a pc

Yeah.. My bootloader is locked and can flash recovery via flashify.
Although that's assuming bootunlocker truly locks the same as fastboot does because that's how I locked my bl.

yes. if you have root you can. worst case, there are apps to lock/unlock your bootloader if you do have root. can unlock, flash recovery via flashify, then relock.

Because I think an app that can root without a pc (and fastboot) will promote a lack of the need to learn the basics, giving us members here a hard time supporting people who don't know the basics

Understood, but this tool is handy for me that decided to root my phone after had everything setup and I was lazy to backup everything > unlocked, root etc and restore.

Yeah but someone who wipes /system on a train has at least possibly previously used fastboot or has a backup stored off their phone.
I see a lot of twrp users wiping /system and /sdcard.. If these people do the whole process on the way to work,, there's 0 chance of any backup anywhere.

Here's my stance.
I will not mention it as an option. If anyone asks if they can root without a pc I will not answer.. If anyone else mentions this app to them or someone asks about it specifically, I will advise on a best practice. I will also give warnings

We could make a guide but I haven't time to do that right now. But if we could create our own guide with our warnings about not flashing anything until Nandroid and always being extra sure not to wipe stuff whilst away etc,, maybe there is a chance?

Just wanted to know if its possible to root (towel root) flash custom recovery and custom roms and then if I decide to later revert totally back to stock unrooted nexus without a PC. Ive attempted to read up on this but I'm a little confused that ill need to use SDK and ADB which i can't have access to at the moment or have the skills to use.
I've seen apps on google play to unlock boot loader once towel rooted but I'm just unsure if i can revert totally back to an unrooted nexus 5 with original recovery, without a pc as I'm using an iMac and having really unreliability with it :/

There are a couple different options.
I'm not sure if flashify requires a unlocked bootloader. Root, flash custom recovery with flashify, make a backup. When you are done either restore backup or if stock already use flashify to flash stock recovery, delete root apps, unroot via supersu.
Boot unlocker I have heard will work to lock and unlock boot loader but I'm not sure about resetting the tamper flag.
Using fastboot and adb is always going to be the surest and safest way to root etc. Unless you are going to be submitting your phone for RMA there should be no reason to unroot. You can always flash a stock rooted ROM and just leave it.

Steps are;
-Download boot unlocker fr on play
-Download flashify from play (just in case)
-Download vomers stock ROM (number 6 in resources section in the link in my signature)
-Download stock recovery (number 7 in resources section in the link in my signature)
Firstly, flash the recovery zip via your current recovery and reboot
Then, reset The tamper flag and lock the boot loader
Finally, open SuperSU and use the full indoor option to remove Root
Good as new.
