Hey guys, im planning on buying an usb stick and of course i will use it on my nexus 5 too. I am thinking of this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AXWOLO6/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=computers
But i don't know if 64 gb is supported by Usb OTG, has someone tried or can try and come back to me?
Edit: It worked, if anyone is wondering.

How are you powering the harddrive?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Via its usb 3.0 connection, there is no way to connect an additional power source, it's a portable drive so there is no additional power source

Ok. Its just that unlike Samsung galaxy s3 (onwards) the nexus 5 cannot power mechanical drives through its USB host port. I expect you'd need a powered USB hub to power and use a mechanical drive.

Ah ok that kinda sucks, I thought maybe it wasn't formatted properly and it was having trouble reading the file system or something.

Would a third party Rom like cyanogen make the drive work? Or is it a hardware issue?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hardware as far as I know. The S3 was the first that could do this without external power. Not all devices follow suit. Mechanical parts require a lot of power compared to flash
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
So any size usb stick or a external drive with its own power source. I'm using a 128gb stick.

I can't say if there's a limit on mechanical drives or not.

Hi, which kernel support USB OTG? Thanks
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Its built-in all ready. After rooting all you need is an app like stickmount. Or if you change rom most of them have the software you need allready in there.

Is your drive in NTSF format? Android only recognizes FAT32. Try a drive formatted as FAT32 and see what happens.
I am using my 1TB WD harddrive(ntfs).
It works fine with StickMount. I never needed external power source.
But it eats the battery extremely fast at almost 1%-2% per minute.
But the USB-Y cable should work fine for powering usb hard drive.

Are all 30-pin USB connectors created equally, or is an OTG cable different?
They are different. OTG has ground and sense shortened.
If your drive is powered from USB beware that this will not work. Drive must be externally powered.

Maybe a USB splitter?

Micro USB has a pin called sense.
Swyped on my Galaxy Note 10.1
Im using an powered USB-4port Hub over the OTG with my Note 10.1.. I'm able to use my 2TB USB HD without any issues

I got a cheap powered USB hub from Amazon (like http://www.amazon.co.uk/BG-Network-...35?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1354711206&sr=1-35) and it works fine ... just ensure you are taking a charger with sufficiant power to support your HD!
i'm looking at getting this 1tb external hard drive and using it with my OTG cable, but i'm not sure if the phone will detect that there is that much space available.
here's the link:

I don't think it's gonna work cause such a hard drive needs power and it didn't work for me

hi every body
i will be very thankful if anybody can help me
today i get a usb OTG cable and i was very excited to try on my nexus s but i was very disappointed that even if i have a custom kernel that supports usb OTG i have to support externel power supply along with the cable which make all the process of > on the go < .. absolute not on the go ..
later when searching i found a video for nexus 4 i guess having usb with really on the go mode i.e. without 20 meters of cable extended along the room to the wall..
is there a way to make this work on the nexus s .?

So my nexus 5 was working perfect was really happy with it... Rooted and unlocked, but after that I can't get ADB or mass storage... All it does when I plug in to PC is charge... I don't even get the sound on the pc when I plug it in??
Any ideas?

If you are connected via MTP try disabling USB Debug mode (settings >developer options)
Its the only solution I know for my N5
Sent from my Nexus 5
I've tried all that... I don't even get confirmation from windows that something is plugged in... It just charges
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Make sure you do the changes while the phone is not plugged in. Otherwise unplug the phone again and change the USB connection type from MTP to PTP and back again.
If that doesn't work then uninstall the adb files installed on your computer and reinstall them

You don't have the correct drivers installed, Google "Samsung nexus usb drivers" Yea, I know it's not a Samsung device, but they'll work.
It was all working fine before... I had an issue before with drivers but it was easily fixed... I don't even get an adb device in driver list I get no "installing" no beep when I plug it in nothing?? Really strange

try going to Settings>Storage, and tap the menu icon on the top right and check if mtp is on or off
mine was off somehow
No that's not it I've done all that... The only time the PC even acknowledges that its there is if I boot to recovery while plugged in... It freezes the PC up a bit then comes up that its not recognised

Can somebody do me a favour and have a close look at your charger cable are the pins all inline or are they in like a v shape?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I had the same problem, solved by Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit. Just follow the steps.
Your cable seems to be OK, I have a "V" shape too.
Hope it's going to help.
Did you manage to solve this issue? Same thing is happening to me, 3 different computers don't recognize the phone anymore, it only charges via usb.

While not as good as having an SD slot - this could be of some help. I'm sure you wouldn't leave it hanging all the time and most likely have to remove it to charge if your not using wireless charging.

I promise I'm not griefing but rather curious.... I am extremely satisfied with the 100 gigs of storage you get with OneDrive when you buy the Note 5. Any of my large files I have put in the cloud or if they are videos I either upload them to social media or put them on my PC for editing and don't forsee an issue with the 32 gigs of onboard storage. I guess I'm just wondering what sort of data an SD device like this accounts for due to a lack of expandable memory.
