USB connection - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my nexus 5 was working perfect was really happy with it... Rooted and unlocked, but after that I can't get ADB or mass storage... All it does when I plug in to PC is charge... I don't even get the sound on the pc when I plug it in??
Any ideas?

If you are connected via MTP try disabling USB Debug mode (settings >developer options)
Its the only solution I know for my N5
Sent from my Nexus 5

I've tried all that... I don't even get confirmation from windows that something is plugged in... It just charges

Make sure you do the changes while the phone is not plugged in. Otherwise unplug the phone again and change the USB connection type from MTP to PTP and back again.
If that doesn't work then uninstall the adb files installed on your computer and reinstall them

You don't have the correct drivers installed, Google "Samsung nexus usb drivers" Yea, I know it's not a Samsung device, but they'll work.

It was all working fine before... I had an issue before with drivers but it was easily fixed... I don't even get an adb device in driver list I get no "installing" no beep when I plug it in nothing?? Really strange

What happens if you're in the bootloader with the device connected and you type fastboot devices in a command window.

Nothing it doesn't connect at all :/

Have...have you tried a different cable?

Not yet as I don't seem to have one... I'm praying that a new cable works... It was all working fine before tho now all I get is "charging"
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

try going to Settings>Storage, and tap the menu icon on the top right and check if mtp is on or off
mine was off somehow

No that's not it I've done all that... The only time the PC even acknowledges that its there is if I boot to recovery while plugged in... It freezes the PC up a bit then comes up that its not recognised

Can somebody do me a favour and have a close look at your charger cable are the pins all inline or are they in like a v shape?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I had the same problem, solved by Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit. Just follow the steps.
Your cable seems to be OK, I have a "V" shape too.
Hope it's going to help.

Did you manage to solve this issue? Same thing is happening to me, 3 different computers don't recognize the phone anymore, it only charges via usb.

I have the drivers installed its not picking them up... And I'm not sure as to which one is for this phone to manually install it..

32 and 64 are your computer. Try turning off the phone, then plugging it in and turning it on, strangely enough that has fixed problems with USB before.

What do you mean it "won't recognize"
When you plug it in you get no notification? Or are you trying to mount the sd card in windows?
When I plug it in it recognizes that something usb was plugged in but it won't pick up the drivers

Try plugging your phone in, then go to the Device Manager in Windows, and look to see if any of the entries have a yellow or red exclamation point beside them.
got it!!!
thanks for all the help but after all the messing around it was the USB cord to be the blame!!!

Odd USB mounting issue

So I have a post floating around on XDA from months ago about my usb mounting not coming up when plugging my phone to PC. I have been using my digital cable box which has a usb connection to charge my phone. Oddly enough it shows my usb connected sometimes when plugged into that but never when connected to PC. Sorry if any typos i hate typing on my phone. Would love to get my usb mounting back. I just use airdroid for file transfer but need wifi to use it.

Make sure the correct drivers are installed. Connect it and check on device manager how your phone is identified.
you can find the drivers on the iset thread

HTC inspire 4G connect with pc problem

Ok so I picked up a inspire for 20 bucks and nothing is wrong with it except it won't connect to any pc. I tried factory resetting it. Installed the drivers every way possible through sync manager and just vs the drivers then self from the ace kit. Still nothing happens or pops up on either the phone or pc. Note: in one instants my computer did pop up once saying last device could not be recognized. IV tried on win 8, win xp, and even on my car stereo for mass storage for music and nothing. Yes usb debugging is on and I set it for charge only and ask every time when connected via ace kit notes. Any help would be appreciated.... Owe and I even cleaned the port out of all the lint and dust.

Did 4.4.2 just kill my MTP/mounting in Windows?

What the heck is going on
everything worked fine prior to the 4.4.2 update
now that im on 4.4.2, i dont see my nexus 5 in windows explorer anymore
My nexus 10 on 4.4.1 works fine
Nexus 5 on 4.4.2 doesn't
can anyone else confirm?
Just tested mine now, no problem here.

The windows 7 "something was just plugged in" chime only rings when i turn on and off debug mode
its almost as if the computer doesnt detect a usb is plugged in until i turn debug mode on
lol what the hell
Settings -> Storage -> Enable MTP
why the hell would it be turned off!
jesus, oh well - this topic can be closed
I was losing my mind here
thanks guys
Wow MTP is terrible
nexus 5 comes up as a device and not a drive, and therefore windows has no idea how to properly copy files from my phone to my desktop
and teracopy has no idea it exists either
ughhhh
guessing it works now hopefully?
It happened to my N5 4.4... so no idea...lol
Yea its working
MTP was just unchecked under Settings --> storage
And what if there are no options under storage? I have to turn off my tablet and take out sd card to copy/move something to/from it. Odin does not recognize the tablet either, tried various stock cables.

[Q] Usb OTG maximum storage?

Hey guys, im planning on buying an usb stick and of course i will use it on my nexus 5 too. I am thinking of this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AXWOLO6/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=computers
But i don't know if 64 gb is supported by Usb OTG, has someone tried or can try and come back to me?
Edit: It worked, if anyone is wondering.

How are you powering the harddrive?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Via its usb 3.0 connection, there is no way to connect an additional power source, it's a portable drive so there is no additional power source

Ok. Its just that unlike Samsung galaxy s3 (onwards) the nexus 5 cannot power mechanical drives through its USB host port. I expect you'd need a powered USB hub to power and use a mechanical drive.

Ah ok that kinda sucks, I thought maybe it wasn't formatted properly and it was having trouble reading the file system or something.

Would a third party Rom like cyanogen make the drive work? Or is it a hardware issue?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hardware as far as I know. The S3 was the first that could do this without external power. Not all devices follow suit. Mechanical parts require a lot of power compared to flash
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
So any size usb stick or a external drive with its own power source. I'm using a 128gb stick.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I can't say if there's a limit on mechanical drives or not.

Hi, which kernel support USB OTG? Thanks
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Its built-in all ready. After rooting all you need is an app like stickmount. Or if you change rom most of them have the software you need allready in there.

Is your drive in NTSF format? Android only recognizes FAT32. Try a drive formatted as FAT32 and see what happens.
I am using my 1TB WD harddrive(ntfs).
It works fine with StickMount. I never needed external power source.
But it eats the battery extremely fast at almost 1%-2% per minute.
But the USB-Y cable should work fine for powering usb hard drive.
