[Q] Is there a way to turn off mobile signal but keep wifi on? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
A few of us here in London are facing massive battery drain when on the tube, (metro,) as our phones are looking for the mobile signal. As we are underground, there is no signal.
One simple solution is to turn airplane mode on, but then we loose wifi, which is now present on the tube.
Is there a simple way to turn just mobile signal off, or airplane mode on, with wifi on?
Thanks.

Open the Phone app dail *#*#4636*#*#
Scroll down and tap turn off radio this will shutdown power to the cellular radio but not wifi radio
To turn back on same *#*#4636*#*#
then turn on radio

Simply go to airplane mode, then turn wi-fi back on. Your mobile radio will stay off until you come out of airplane mode.
Although they're turned off when airplane mode is activated, both wi-fi and bluetooth can be separately re-activated without disabling airplane mode.

Turn airplane mode on and then go back and turn Wi-Fi on.

I've tried this, but even though the wifi toggle is on, the wifi icon in the top right corner isn't.

Have to agree with JT and JD (how funny).
Airplane-mode and wifi on does the trick.

[Q] Wifi keeps disconnecting?

Hi I've juste bought the note, and its been like 1h i'm playing with it and the wifi always keep disconnecting and then reconnect it self :S and its not my internet connection!!
Dont know if someone had the same issu or if someone knows a way to make it stable?
Thanks
[Edit]
I've restarted my router, its still doing it. Every other devices is working perfectly on my internet connection. I can see the wifi bouton turning off by it self and sometimes the bouton is disable :S (not available to turn on or off anymore) I'm gonna try on another network to see if its my bote or the internet, and then I'll go get a new one!
[Edit]
I went to the store and they gave me another one so problem is now solved!

Uhm, I wouldn't be so sure. If it were a problem with the Note in general you'd have heard people screaming from a mile away. I've used my Note all over Europe, Asia, and the U.S. at hotels and airports and have never had a Wi-Fi drop issue. This is the only setting I can think of that would make a difference. That, or using the power saving settings.
Everything is factory settings :s Im trying a factory reset now but its like if its the wifi turn off then turns on back again all by it self :/ if I go to settings and just watches, the wifi turns off automaticly then turns back on :S I dont know its wierd

I've had my note for almost 3 weeks. Had this problem once. It kept continually disconnecting and switching access points. I powered off my router. Waited ten seconds. Turned it on again. It hasn't happened again. It's been at least one week. I have a Netgear router - WNDR3700.

I'm having the same problem. The wifi keeps automatically turning off and on it seems. It does automatically reconnect, but is a huge annoyance.
Tried with 3 different routers, same issue on all 3.
Tried factory restore twice.
Wifi sleep setting is set to be constantly on.
Mine would do the same thing every 5 or so minutes.
Then I installed CM10.

Wifi problem

In my battery stats my wifi and my awake are showing drops at the same time.
I have reset the phone twice. My wifi is on "Always on". I have no apps installed except the one that came pre loaded.
Also every-time I wake the screen its giving me the message "connected to my wifi"
Anyone have any ideas?
thanks

So did a factory reset. Did not install one app, charged phone to 100% and let it sit overnight and got this result.
I am starting to think this is a bad unit I got. Is anyone else having this problem with their wifi?

check advanced wifi settings. Always allow scanning or something like that is probably enabled for google location services. Every samsung device I've ever worked with has had this enabled by default.

I am going to give it another day or so see if it works itself out if not going to ask for a replacement.

K, I'm on sprint but my bat screen doesn't look anything like that . . . If you turn on airplane mode, what happens?
Got an idea. Settings-->Data usage-->Menu-->Show Wi-Fi usage
tap wifi
there should be a list of apps under the graph.
Do a full reset, then check the bat page to see if wifi is still on, and then check that list above to see if anything is actually using it.

Did u swap out at the T-mobile store? I am curious what they said.
Last night i charged to 100% just let it sit on my counter and completely dead battery in 3 hours without touching the phone once.
Just to give an update on this thread that I started.
I received yesterday a new unit from T-mobile and this unit works perfectly. No wifi dropouts at all.
So my first unit was a defect

WiFi drop on 5.1?

It's a couple of times i unlock my phone and i notice the wifi has disconnected, then it riconnects itself. It also happened at first flash of 5.1, right after the setup wizard.
Any known WiFi drops bugs on 5.1?
I am using Cataclysm + EX.
I am not able to provide any adb logcat because it doesn't seem to happen all the times, sorry.
It's becoming a week known issue.
Seems to be a fault in the Wi-Fi settings where the phone is not keeping the Wi-Fi on when the phone sleeps (even though it's set to do that).
I would go back to an older version (5.0.1) until these retards rectify.
I'm having the same problem.
Anyone got a solution yet?
Bump.
The real issue (at least for me) is that when the phone sleeps and the wifi drops, it enables data network, and I have not unlimited data plan...
How is possible nobody is talking about that wifi behavior ?!
Happened once or twice but that's it.
Someone on G+ that had our same issue said he turned off automatic wifi freq (wifi > advanced) and the drop never happened again.. yet.
That's not a proper fix but better than nothing.

Disable Wifi Power Saving Mode - Galaxy S7

By default the Galaxy S7 has a WiFi power saving mode which affects bandwidth and response when the device screen is off and on battery power.
New method to disable WiFi Power Saving mode. Should work for other Samsung devices.
The *#0011# method I've found creates a file /data/.psm.info and contains a 0 to disable power saving.
Open a Terminal session.
su
echo '0' > /data/.psm.info
chmod 664 /data/.psm.info
Or you can use my app to toggle the setting.
Play Store App
Power Saver On

Power Saver Off - Sees a fast response every other ping.
OLD Method
Follow the instructions below or use my own attached modded file to disable this power saving mode. The option is in a service menu but the activity hides the power saving button to toggle it.
My scheduled Wi-Fi tasks now don't struggle.
My S7 is a UK G930F. Will also work with G935F.
Copied /system/priv-app/serviceModeApp_FB/serviceModeApp_FB.apk
Decompiled using AndroidMultiTool and latest apktool.jar
Edit /res/layout/wifi_information.xml
Change the powersavemod lines - android:visibility from "gone" to "visible"
Recompile the apk
Copy back to device /system/priv-app/serviceModeApp_FB/serviceModeApp_FB.apk
Restart device.
Open the Dialer and type *#0011#
Click More
Click Wifi
You will now see the WIFI Power Save Mode option
With Power Saver of, screen off and no USB connected, you get better bandwidth and a quick response every other ping.

Stops the Wifi going really slow when the phone is sleeping. I have an app that queries a website every minute and it wasn't receiving results each time.
Disabling power saving mode gets me results every time.
I know about this. In fact, it was the first thing I did when I got my S7E. But I don't have that option. I'm on latest DBT firmware.

If disabled it turns off wifi during sleep like it says.
That said, do not know anything about the speed, I never use wifi, haha.....

Anyone managed to do something similar with no root ?
I'm pretty sure it's the doze feature that causes this, when I disable the doze feature the WiFi is always staying alive (it's done using adb and it resets after reboot), however, I've tried disabling all the apps in the 'optimized apps' and it doesn't help.

I did not see so much difference but it's a thing that you not use.....
what does it fix? which wifi problems?
Actually I do use Smart Network switch, I switches between LTE and Wi-Fi. I also keep LTE alive in the background for faster switching.
If that is turned OFF - I get periods of "no data" usually when I am trying to navigate and the device had locked on some "Xfinity wifi " as that is a very common open wifi.
I am and most of us are "not paying LTE so we don't use it" - This feature allows for better Network switch and less periods of No-Data, IMHO

That must be a regional issue. My S7e never lost a wireless connection or had problems moving between cellular and Wi-Fi. Regardless, both the radio h/w and s/w are going to be new on the S8 so things that affected previous phones aren't likely to affect it. We'll probably getting a totally different set of new issues and quirks.

As in you're in the EU and I'm the U.S. and haven't experienced what you're reporting. I also don't remember seeing chronic worldwide wireless issues on the S7e forum. So it doesn't seem like whatever the problem you're referencing is affected all S7e owners equally. And it certainly won't affect S8 owners because the radio h/w and accompanying s/w is new.

Seems like no matter what I turn off, wifi still toggles automatically, I've wiped cache, booted into safe mode, factory reset, took away permissions to system settings.
Is there a way to trace what is commanding wifi to toggle?
Maybe if I can trace it and will be able to disable it
I see that no apps have requested this through the "wifi control history"
I knew I couldn't be the only one experiencing this, so I'm glad there is at least discussion about it.
I made a related thread in the Q&A this morning before I found this thread.
I'm on the T-Mobile S8, and I do connect to a 5Ghz band. Thankfully I don't use smart network switch nor do I want my device scanning for bluetooth when I have bluetooth disabled (they say it's for "location accuracy", but it's actually for ad services).
I only disabled bluetooth scanning when bluetooth is off a few minutes before finding this thread, so I'll report back if wifi continues to drop in the coming days.

Same for me. Did you install some software update?
Well I've been messing around with this issue for hours and hours. The only solution is to set my routers to 2.4ghz because 5ghz makes this phone go crazy.
Just my 5 cents -> do this or stop wasting time until either Sammy releases a fix (doubtful) or root + custom ROMs start appearing (more likely) so a specific Dev fixes the problem.
This much money and I haveto change MY other equip to have it working.
Bah!

For those of you that are losing Wi-Fi connection and reconnecting, go into your router configuration and change the channel until you find the channel that is most reliable in your area. That's usually the main cause most of the time for disconnect issues. Change your 5Ghz channel and you most likely will find one that works fine. If the router is in "auto channel select" mode, take it out of auto and set a channel manually until you find the channel that works for your area.
