Long story short: I messed up with flashing a custom rom. But gladly, I got my phone fixed. Now, I wanna root again but I'm scared of rom flashing. I just wanna do the basic benefits of rooting like deleting stock aps and other things.
So what other 'rooting benefits' can I obtain without rom flashing? Or without having the risk of bricking my phone? The rooting process is kinda simple for me since I can use the z4root app.
Help? Anyone?

You can obtain lot of goodies, like install applications not coming from the market, i guess, edit system files, remove non needed system applications, do a lot of things, be sure when you flash a rom to have a fully charged battery, its really hard to brick it.
mmmmm ????
depending what phone you have?? Rooting is safe enough, you can "unroot" just as easy! I definitely recommend z4root If you flash another ROM be sure to do lots of research next time!!! If you experience any problems, dont forget google can be your best friend! You can count on the fact you wont be the only one having the same problem
I have LG p500. Basically, I'm now scared of anything that involves CMD. I can install non market apps like the ones from here. So yeah, after Z4root. what now?
These phones are great for bricking, because a lot of times they're easy to fix. Try out themes, custom roms, custom kernels, it's all available to you now.
Can you guide me a bit? Please

Oh! I read this thread in the news section. If i understand it correctly it will allow me to uninstall preset apps without cmd?

I recently bought a Droid 2 Global and decided to get my feet wet with android development. To familiarize myself with the platform I wrote a simple utility for managing the bloat that came pre-installed on my phone. I thought there might be other people who would get some use out of this so I am posting it here. You will need to be rooted and have busybox installed to use this application. If you used z4root to root your phone then you should have everything you need.
The application is pretty simple. When you start it you are presented with a list of the Bloat that the application recognizes. Each item in the list has a checkbox that indicates whether it is enabled or not. To disable bloat you just uncheck the boxes next to what you don't want and then press the Apply button that appears at the bottom of the screen. You can save what you have disabled as a profile by pressing the options button and then choosing Save Profile. This is convenient because you are going to need to turn all of this bloat back on if you want to receive updates. If you have saved a profile and a new update becomes available you can launch Bloat Manager, press the options button, choose Enable All and then click Apply to get your phone ready for the update. After the update installs you can launch Bloat Manager, press the options button, choose Load Profile and then click Apply to turn the bloat back off.
The following applications can be toggled on or off using Bloat Manager:
Amazon MP3 /system/app/amazonmp3_1_8_14_signed_zipaligned_Signed_2010-09-09_15-23-51.apk
Blockbuster /system/app/Blockbuster.apk
City ID /system/app/CityID.apk
Friend Feed /system/app/FriendFeed.apk
Kindle /system/app/Kindle-1_0_2-OEM-SingleSign_Signed_2010-09-20_17-31-57.apk
My Net /system/app/Mynet.apk
My Verizon /system/app/MyVerizon.apk
News Widget /system/app/NewsWidget.apk
Performance Manager /system/app/PerformanceManager.apk
Skype /system/app/Skype_mobile.live.apk
Social Messaging /system/app/SocialMessaging.apk
Social Share /system/app/SocialShare.apk
VZNavigator /system/app/vnav_6.1.0.160_Droid2Global_rel_PROD_signed.apk
Visual Voice Mail /system/app/Vvm.apk
Weather Widget /system/app/WeatherWidget.apk
World Clock Widget /system/app/WorldClockWidget.apk
When you disable an application using Bloat Manager it simply renames it to .bak. When you re-enable an application it is renamed back to .apk.
Bloat Manager remounts your /system partition as writable in order to make changes to applications. I came up with this list based on what other people have had success with removing, but I have not personally turned off everything on the list. Changing things in your system partition is always dangerous so please be careful.

Iinstead of asking and waiting for responses, search on the forum or read a sticky or something to expand your knowledge if you aren't comfortable with cmd you probably shouldn't be messing with root privileges. And bricked phones are dead phones, you can only recover from a brick by replacing hardware

Wow. Since you put it that way.
But there's just too much. You cant blame me for being like this. I bricked my phone and they replaced the mother board (for free) and I am worried to do this again. I tried learning, I failed. And I don't like to be a wannabe developer of some sort, I just want to maximize my phone to it's potential and do what most people do.
You can say that I haven't exerted too much effort. In that case, maybe you're not the person I should me asking help from. Sorry, I was hurt.

CMD (command shell in windows, mac or linux) is only used when you change ROMs or unlock the bootloader (the program that loads the ROM) apps and themes have nothing to do with it, you will read ADB a lot which is basically a way to access the whole device remotely, most of this you do on the handset itself. Root is a term the same as apples jailbreak, which gives you complete access to everything (most is protected bloatware (apps) that network providers don't want you to delete, there is also a percentage of protection stopping you messing up bits that bricking your phone! Bricking doesn't mean screen wont work, force closes or not booting...it means DEAD! If see something cool that you fancy doing, research a little first and if you don't know what it is or means...DONT DO IT! Its that simple root is what you make it, it opens a lot of options but there's no rush to get to the end, the you learn doing little bits, the quicker you'll be confident flashing ROMs and maybe even developing your own customisations

If you want to maximize your phone's full potential you have to deal with thoses things, e.g.: joy 845 comes with the stock rom, which is slow and contains many things not needed, thus you have to flash another rom, better, faster etc...so yeah you have to be a wannabe in the end if you want to do what you want.
Check out Youtube how-to vids on rooting. Some are invaluable, especially the longer ones. Most of these guys take you step by step in detail.

Hello,
I was wondering if there was an Android app like Activator on the iPhone? I have searched to the best of my abilities regarding this question but have not found a clear answer. The closest I have come to finding this answer was the app "LaunchKey." However, it does not seem to fit what I am looking for.
Reason for this search is due to my brief episode with the iPhone 3g and yes I know...(after finding out, android system is definitely better in terms of customizing and freedom) Thus during that time I came upon this app called "Activator", which is basically amazing. Now that I am back using the android system I realized the only I miss about the iPhone was that app.
So if anyone can help that would be great! Thanks!
BTW:
Background information on the iPhone jailbreak app "Activator." Basically you can launch any apps and system actions via gestures or hardware buttons. (such as long-press, short-press, double tap,etc...)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464
and for gestures Im not entirely sure where I saw it or or what it was called but it does exist.
Reply
Thanks for the reply, however, I did stumble upon that app but it does not really support long press, short press, double tap and other various hardware buttons. As for gestures, I guess it does not matter as much as the hardware button configuration. Basically can a button have more functions than just one ie: home button-going to home. Thanks
I'm hoping that this app exists, as its one of the first apps I discovered years ago that was auto installed after jail breaking my previous iPhone. The app basically allows you customize a very large range of settings as shortcuts.
http://m.lifehacker.com/5899492/mak...hen-you-connect-or-disconnect-your-headphones
not strongly related but here's an app which I found very useful:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tora.mamma.swipestart
Thanks!
Thanks for your input I however have found the app "SwipePad" to be extremely useful, albeit not the original application I was looking for but it does the job Thank you again!

Widgets are great but you still have to unlock the phone and look at the screen and press it. With activator you can, for example, press the power button of the phone twice and that will initiate the flash light... this is much better when you are in need of the flash light quickly...I wish android had something like that...

I believe since the time I have posted this question to the present, there have been alternatives as well as actual implementations to the hardware tweaks. Currently, there are baked in hardware tweaks in custom ROM such as CM10.1 (lock screen long press buttons do variety of different things) or software programs such as swipepad, or Trigger app (Both of which I use a lot)
My current ROM CM10.1 has the capability of accessing the flashlight from the longpress of home button while in lockscreen. Or even changing music volume and music track by volume press/longpress. This I consider the equivilent of what you were referring to.

**ATTENTION: any of the information I have provided are based on my own experience/knowledge/research. IT IS IMPERATIVE(important) that you do your own research to double check my information and advice. If ever in DOUBT, ask/research around. (or dont follow through is usually the safest option) YOU are ultimately responsible for what you do with YOUR device, if you don't believe this, please do not continue dabbling in this area.
You should be able to do that, to "unroot" your phone, but it depends on the device as well as the instructions that other developers/rooters have given. (meaning not 100% probable, you need to do more research)
*JUST NOTICED YOU SAID YOU ARE ROOTED
-To get Stock ROM, just download the appropriate ROM zip files and then flash it.
-if you want to get warranty back, you will have to follow instructions for your device on how to unroot. (if even possible)
Follow the instructions given on the cyanogenmod website, usually involves flashing and wiping. (sounds like you have a samsung phone )
Based on question 3 statement, I believe you have to do MORE research. (as this is an extremely basic idea of rooting, unless of course I misread or the question was mistyped) Here is where you can start:CM about
Again, you have to do MORE research yourself, google is your friend for that. There is no one size fits all unrooting method.
Cyanogenmod (also known as CM) has an software release life cycle. (not counting the M snapshot nor experiments) You have Stable>Nightly> Release Candidates(RC).
Taken from this Forum
bassmadrigal:
Stable is after all the features desired by the CM devs have been put in and the code has been tested. Snapshots (M builds) are builds done roughly once a month that has had some testing to make sure things are mostly working and released to the public. These are the first builds that allow official bug reports on the project manager site, https://jira.cyanogenmod.org. Nightlies are automated builds that are built, well, every night. There is no human interaction with these and they are largely there just to see if the code added throughout the day will compile. As far as the devs are concerned, there are no bad builds with the nightlies, because if it doesn't build, that is news to let them know that something is screwed up in the code. They don't accept any bug reports on these builds.
Generally, the nightly builds, while extremely experimental and considered bleeding-edge, tend to be relatively stable and mostly bug-free. Many people use the nightlies as their so-called daily-driver, meaning that any bugs that they may have aren't so severe that they want to switch to a different version. For my Nexus 4, as soon as I got it I switched to a nightly build and haven't had any bugs pop up.
Also, all builds are full builds, so if you switch to a nightly, you aren't required to flash every single nightly. You can do it as you see fit. I've been known sometimes to flash a build every day, but then I've gone a month in between updating. Just grab the latest version you want to flash and flash that one.

Let me start by saying I'm not the new kid on the block. I've been using Android since it's inception. I am an Android fanatic. I root, tinker with roms, apps, settings, kernels, mods, etc. . You name it, I do it( as far as android is concerned). I say this with a singular purpose, don't flame me for this question because to me it seems completely valid.
Why does android not have the ability backup itself built in( this should not require root) ?
Why has Google not implemented the ability to do so from a computer? <<- This should be identical to how an iPhone is backed up ( don't flame on this because it's actually one of the things iPhone does better than anyone else, and I hate Apple. However I give credit where it's due)
Don't tell me we have plenty of options even if we're not rooted, if this we're the case then people would not rely on clockwork mod recoveries, twrp, or the like. Those types of restores should be available without having a custom recovery, custom rom, or root in and of itself.
Also don't bring up the backup using adb, it's hidden, and it is mediocre. It fails to backup a lot of things.
I'm asking only about a complete backup option, with possibly the option to select and deselect certain types of data<<--This to should be similar to backing up an iPhone .
Now who here would like this to be a feature implemented in the next version of android?
If you answer my questions please just be clear and concise.
I will respond should it be warranted, or requested.
This is not a flaming thread, don't do it.
I look forward to all of your responses.

Well... to be honest, i really don't use backups much, just titanium backup and we've got non-root alternatives as you stated, so , it's not a matter of great attention to me.... I like fresh and clean installs

it seems like a interesting idea, when i had a ipod touch back then, i jail broke it and after a few days it decided to not want to turn on (stayed at apple logo) and iTunes detected it and i was able to restore it to brand spanking new. i dont think it would be possible for google to do so without root ( and a few Sues here and there from apple ) Android is based off linux right? we can make backups on linux because we have Super User permissions, we own this Computer, we can do all the Admin Crap we want. for android, Samsung owns your phone or HTC owns your phone, You do not have full Admin permissions on your device to make a backup (of the sort we are talking about) also im sure the OEM's would be angry with people easily being able to Restore their broken device so they wont buy that phone a second time or even get a bigger more expensive phone.
The reason I bring it up is not because of fresh installs, or whatever.
Here is an example:
A regular non techie person, has Android phone x. They make a complete backup using the aforementioned capabilities that isn't implemented yet. There phones screen goes out, they drop there phone in water, whatever the phone is not in working condition. Well if they had the capabilities that I'm referring to, that phone would need to be called on warranty, or for the latter insurance. Either way they are sent a new device, same model as they had previously. Now they sync there backup, and there back up and running.
The way it is now, that person would have to hope that Google syncs back there apps ( it has never worked for me, except for contacts, and for the most part developers aren't backing up there app data to Google so that is not something you get back).
Not to mention settings are never synced, so there's that.
Point being android does not have any good options to make a complete backup. The only real options require root, which an average consumer will not have. This is why I'm saying it should be simplified, to where we can do it via one click on a pc.
I personally would like to start a petition for this, as anyone could benefit from this function.

True, but if it's implemented within android that's not really an issue.
Look at it like this, we used to need root to screen shot, to Hotspot, to install apps out of the Android market ( not really been an issue since it hasn't been Google play because android was fairly mature by then). Point is Google gave those features, and implemented them natively, this removing need to root to do them. The same could be done with the ability to make backups.

well i think google has done enough to make google as great as it is today, im thinking the reason why we dont have one of these options could be that they want us to make a program for this? im sure eventually they will have such a option to download multiple apps on a que so we can install them quickly without have to go over Each specific one.
Well actually what I'm referring to would have to be done by Google.
Here's why, locked bootloaders, encrypted boot loaders, etc.
The developer community could make such a program, but it's going to need root to be able to do what I'm referring to.
Google would have to make the OEMs use a standard, so that it could be accomplished without exposing there software. This would probably mean our backups would have to be encrypted on a per Google account basis.
It's not an impossible feat.
1) It would simply require Google to make the standard, and ensure that it's enforced. Ignoring it would mean no Google services, which to most is a huge negative.
2) Google release the program.
3) OEM would need to ensure compliance with said program, and submit software drivers to Google, or simply distribute them via there website( as they do now). Preferably submitting them to Google.
4) Making backups would become so much easier, especially for the average joe

One big problem with this is the syncing of app data. I don't want to have to restart my games every time I get a different device( especially a replacement device that is the same model as my prior device).
Another thing, I keep an electronic checkbook, and would be thrilled if I could keep that app data from here on out, even when I change devices. However this definitely something I don't want Google's prying eyes on. So only local backup, which makes the complete backup via pc even more vital.
Maybe since businesses are the next aim, they will implement this feature because it can be vital certain data be absolutely private, but still have backups.

Dear Mangers,
I have Android 6.0.1 ROM source code for a Tablet.
I have to remove all the apps e.g., browser, playstore, video player, camera app etc.
I have to add my app in it.
Means there should be only my app and few settings in the device.
Please guide me how to do it.
Regards,
Tanveer
Not sure if its the right answer but I will try to answer it so that you can get a starting point.
It all depends on what you want to do. Your question is very vague...
1. If you just want to run your app and nothing else then you can run your tablet in kiosk mode. Seach "android in kiosk mode" and you shall see results. I am using my phone right now so cant write too much or post links. This would be an easy and quick fix method.
2. If you have source code and want to make own rom then you will have to learn it yourself. The starting point I assume would be finding the chipset of the tablet and then searching for tools that support customizatiin for that chipset. Then you can add or remove apps and oyher things like boot logo and boot animation ans build a rom of yourself. This is not a one day or two day job. Its time consuming. Have 1 or 2 tablets to mess up on the side.

Hey guys, Im fairly new to this Note 20 Ultra and Android in general so I decided to ask this here but wasn't sure if I should make a separate topic for each anyways here we go I hope you can help me out:
1. How can I make it so when I receive text messages, notifications, etc... the phone screen turn on like iPhones?
2. I'm using Google Maps for navigation but it seems to be running at a very low FPS and it's not smooth at all, is there a way to make it run smoother/higher frame rate?
3. Whats the best way to fully format and reinstall the firmware on my Note 20 Ultra ( I have the unlocked US version purchased directly from Samsung )/ for reference I know I can do a reset from the settings but I wanna know if there is a way to hook it up to PC and have the phone completely wiped and install a fresh OS like I used be able to do on iPhone.

1: look into option within settings for edge lighting.
2: download maps locally to speed things up.
3: don't bother.
4: research the xda forums.

Thanks for taking the time to reply at least but:
1. Already have edge lightning which is not what i was asking: ( Turn the screen on when receiving txt messages )
2. done that as well, doesn't fix the low sub 30 fps issue. looking for any hidden settings/mods to get higher fps in Maps
3. honestly that was not helpful, I'm simply asking what's the best way to go about it, not bothering is simply wasn't what I was looking for.
4. again thanks for taking the time none the less.
1. For this I use a third party app as the Note 20 does not have anymore the notification LED. This app is called aodNotify (from Play Store) and it has option to wake up the screen when a notification arives.
The phone itself does not have such an option, it has something else called "lift to wake" that will wake the screen if you pick it up from where it was standing....but that's regardless if you get a notification or not
2. Dunno what to say here, Maps works fine for me. Maybe reinstall the app, wipe its cache, things like this. But I presume you already tried these
3. Download your official firmware either from Sammobile site or using a tool like Frija, Samfirm (is deprecated) and such, then write the firmware on your phone using Odin. This will ensure you won't trigger Knox and that you'll have official firmware written as new

Welcome to the forums, welcome to Android, and welcome to the Note family!!
To start off with, there's going to be hiccups switching platforms. Apple and Android do the same things, but for different people. Apple just works, but it's the same experience across every device. Android requires some tinkering and customization, but the beauty is you CAN do that.
And some people just can't make the switch, and that's cool. I left Android for Apple years ago, but after months of trying to make it like my Android, I realized that was stupid and switched back to Android and never looked back. Then there's some people who switch platforms and love it. Then there's others who carry and Apple in one pocket, and an Android in the other, because they appreciate the differences.
1. I second AOD notify. I love that app and have used it on my Note 10, my Note 20, and plan to see if it works on the Z Fold 2 when it arrives next week. It can mimic the LED notification light, wake your screen, etc. Also, remember you have an Always On Display that will show all notifications without turning on the screen. I know that's not what you asked, but OPTIONS.
2. Do you have the adaptive refresh rate on? My Google Maps has never been choppy. My work phone used to be an Apple, but I don't remember it having smoother navigation than my Android. I wish I could see your two phones side by side to see what you mean.
3. We don't have iTunes, so you have to do a little more research and work, but we do have an equivalent for reinstalling the factory firmware. For Pixels it's a few command line commands. For Samsung, it's using a Windows application called ODIN.
I say this not to be lazy, but because it will genuinely help you way more...but use the search bar and do some research here. Also check out the the other Galaxy forums (S series, Note 10, even Note 9 and 8). You'll find many tutorials on how to flash the firmware with ODIN. More in depth than I could ever type here. I think I even wrote a guide back in the Note 8 days and posted it here.
But honestly, 99.9% of the time, flashing the firmware isn't necessary and is a waste of time. But, if you want to do it, you can!
The learning this new platform will be fun if you really dive in and start reading and learning. We were all new to Android one time as well. Some of us old farts, like me, came Blackberry and have been doing this for a while. Some people tend to forget they were new once too.
Search, read, then ask questions, and you'll be fine. Welcome!!
