I've been thinking of switching to T-Mobile. If I switch and get the Galaxy Note 2 (which will come with 4.3 installed), will I be able to root and flash like normal (CWM recovery and flash aosp 4.4.2 ROMS) OR will I be limited to safestrap and 4.3 TW Roms like we are on the Verizon models? I thought Verizon was the only carrier that still locked the boot loader.

Probably best to search for your answer in the T-Mobile Note 2 forum or ask your question there:

Yes, should go to Tmobile forum, but you should be in luck, since other carriers are not like stupid Verizon, you should able to unlock and flash custom rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2634341

Hi,
I spent last night getting my t-mobile galaxy s4 to work on ATT. I did a lot of research on the subject and it wasn't that difficult at all. I bought the phone off of EBAY.
I was able to accomplish this from all of the tools here and a little research. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2335109
The first thing i did was root the phone and install CWM. I then used the sim unlock found in the link above. The next step i took (because i like custom roms on my phone) was to install TASK650's AOKP rom. I flashed the rom and followed his instructions.
After the restart, I went through the welcome screen and shut the phone down. I put my sim in and started the phone. I noticed i was getting the H, but no LTE. This led me to more research. The fix was easy once I found it. The APN needs to be pointed to the ATT phone option. It defaults to wap.cingular. After about 5 minutes and a reboot the LTE appeared and after the speed tests confirmed.
This is not a guide. I am just sharing my experience. If you do this please do your own research as you can do damage to your phone. There are risks involved, flash and modify your phone at your own risk.
Just wondering, why did you get a tmobile s4 to use with att? Normally the att version can be found for cheaper price
Sent from my GT-I9505
I am confused here, what is it you were trying to accomplish? running a att rom on your tmo device? Because you say you have a tmo phone.
Why go thru all that, when this rom is already setup to work on tmo with the tmo apn settings already setup for you.
[ROM] Task650 AOKP (Jellybean 4.2.2)(6.26.2013)
Do you new people just go and see a rom you like, in any forum, and do not look in your devices forum and flash it? if so, your are asking to brick your phones.

4.3 OTA is LOCKED down! If you attempt to flash a ROM or recovery, you WILL HARD BRICK your phone
Doubtful because it hasn't happened to the s4 people. I would say hope for safestrap.

Yes, if you took the 4.3 OTA and try to flash an older stock build, you will brick your phone. As it stands right now, if you took the OTA you can root it, but you are still stuck on that stock ROM.
What would happen if we managed to flash a stock ROM like 4.4.x? I've seen so much talk about going backwards, they've locked us out of going backwards so let's go forward...maybe.

As of right now if you took the OTA update to Android 4.3 your hopes of doing anything custom other than rooting your phone are hopeless.
In order to flash a ROM such as Android 4.4.X aka KitKat you need a custom recovery manager. To be able to flash anything the first thing you need is an unlocked bootloader. The OTA update has locked the bootloader down so that you if you were to try and install CWM or TWRP recovery as soon as you boot into recovery mode you are going to get a Yellow Triangle that says "Verizon has detected unauthorized software on this phone, please turn off your phone and take it in to your nearest Verizon Store.
If you turn off your phone and power it back on you will keep getting that message...
The only way around it is to boot into Download Mode -> Vol Down + HOME for 2 Seconds then hit Power (if i remember correctly). After you boot into download mode you can then boot your phone back up regularly.
If you have made the mistake of trying to put a custom recovery on your phone you can put the stock recovery back on your SGS3 (stock recovery is better than no recovery) by downloading the recovery image and overwriting your custom recovery with the command "dd" in Android Terminal Emulator. For this to work you must be rooted.
Here is a link to the tutorial which shows you how to write the stock bootloader and stock recovery back to your Verizon (d2vzw) SGS3 in case you have made this mistake...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166
In that thread pay close attention to the 2nd post as it shows you the commands to use to write your stock recovery or stock bootloader back to your phone.
I know it sucks that we can't put custom ROM's or a custom recovery (this hurts the most!) on our Verizon phone for now at least...
COME ON VERIZON EMPLOYEES! LEAK THE UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER! WE WONT TELL!
Maybe we will get lucky and some international version will come out and we can use that...
I remember awhile back that ASUS locked their bootloader on their Transformer tablet and you could request it from ASUS and they made you fill out this form saying that you understood by unlocking your bootloader you could not make a claim for a warranty. Why can't Verizon do that!?
I pray someone works this out eventually...

That would still require you to have a custom recovery. Also that would still most likely brick your phone cause the only 4.4 ROMS are AOSP based, meaning it installs a different kernel than the stock one. Thus when when the phone would boot up it would check the the kernels signature and would brick upon not finding one.
So I guess all hopes of finding a way around this are hopeless...for now. If u remember, a few months ago, President Obama signed a bill for Verizon Wireless to monitor all cell phone activity without the consent of the user, in conjunction with the NSA. I suspect that this is the reason why only Verizon has opted to completely lock down the bootloader because it contains code embedded in the bootloader (or partitions pertaining to bootloaders, aboot, and such) that allow National Security Agencies to implement spyware and tracking or listening programs. This is a testament to the sub-communist movement that is slowly taking hold in this so-called "free" society that was brought forth by our forefathers.
But back on subject - I just upgraded from a HTC Thunderbolt to SGS3 because most development for the Thunderbolt was few and far between. Upon purchasing my shiny new device, this Abomination of Android that is 4.3 was already being OTA'd. Had I known then....man, had I known then. It's a sad time for superusers all-over Verizon's crummy wireless empire.

Is there anyway you could post the link for the safe strap recovery option? I am rooted on 4.3 but I want a recovery that may work so that if this thing gets cracked be that much closer to freedom.
Verizon is doing us like Andy Dufrane...locks us down forcing us to tunnel a hole in the wall and crawl through 3 football fields sh!t to free!

And most of them say specifically that they are for unlocked bootloaders or not compatible with safestrap. Is there some trick I need to know to flash these roms in safestrap on 4.3 with a locked bootloader?
So I just rooted my phone the other day and I was wondering if I am able to flash a rom. I disabled Knox and things seem to be okay so far. I want to flash Cyanogenmod or SlimKat to my phone and I want to know if I need to unlock the bootloader to get a custom recovery (twrp) and install the rom. Thanks in advance!

Nope, once you took the OTA 4.3 or 4.4 your boot loader is locked forever, unless someone from Samsung leaks it out for us.
EDIT: OK I was wrong, someone just got downgrade from 4.4 back to 4.1.2 with unlocked boot loader by send it out to a phone service company and the cost is $50.
I need some help here, I have an unlocked bootloader S3 with CleamRom 8. It's been sitting around unused for many months. I gave my S5 to my uncle in exchange for his upgrade and ordered a Note 4. In the meantime, now I am using this S3 again. I almost don't care about root anymore, can I just flash the 4.4.2 tar and have Kit Kat? If anyone ever uses this again after me, it would be someone in my family that busted their phone. I am guessing stock kit kat is far more stable than these AOSP roms. I have been out of the S3 game for atleast a year. Any feedback would be appreciated.

If you want to keep your bootloader unlocked, you need to flash a modified version of the stock firmware so your bootloader does not re-lock. I am using the official cyanogenmod rom and I have been for months. So far so good. No glitches or jumps or jitters.
