Asurion Replacements? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Has anyone had to get a replacement recently? I haven't seen a post or discussion on this recently and Google only brings up the 2012 shortage. Just wondering if they are sending S3's or switching devices on folks. If they are sending S3's, are they coming with the 4.3 locked bootloader and Knox. If so does anyone want to buy a refurb S3?
I can count on one hand how few times I've dropped my S3 since I got preordered it. I dropped it in the grass in my yard, face down with the extended battery, and the screen shattered. UGH!

I've seen a few people who said they got a replacement. Only 1 said it came with 4.1.2 and the rest came with 4.3. I'd guess you'd probably end up with a locked bootloader.
Maybe you can call asurion and ask them to ship you one with 4.1.2.

I ended up with a locked replacement sadly after my s3 died two weeks ago
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

After upgrading to 4.3 and its horrible battery life, I went and complained to my local Verizon store, and they put in a request for a free (yes, no deductible) replacement and it came with the MB1 firmware!! Instantly rooted and froze SDM
And this was within the last 3 weeks

Dang... Sounds like my only hope is that the local store doesn't suck. Either that or that someone eventually figures a way around the bootloader. I know there's the bootstrap method but I've had pretty miserable luck with bootstraps soft bricking.
Guess I'll look into the HTC One, their latest update to lock it down hasn't been pushing very long. Any mention of the S5 having Knox?

I had a Rezound, got a replacement that was the SGS3. 4.3, locked bootloader. If they are replacing other devices with SGS3s... they have to have some of them, eh?

It turns out that if you have a white 32GB GS3, they are out of stock. Your picks are a 32GB pebble blue GS3 or a 32GB white GS4. I guess it really doesn't matter since the bootloader would have been locked down anyways. I wasn't ever impressed with the GS4 but maybe I'll be able to sell it easier than an S3. I'm done with commercial Samsung devices, especially with this Knox crap. I'll be sticking to Nexus or GPE devices.

I got a replacement and mine was 4.1.2, I was really happy it didn't have 4.3

Only a few of the verizon phones have actually gotten into people's hands. Once next week hits and everybody starts to get there preorders delivered then we'll see some major improvement
I got mine today and I'm too much of a rookie to try any methods out there... sort of disappointing. I really want Google Wallet.

replacement phone is not new?

I just got a replacement for my GS3 since I had problem with the GPS. I'm a little surprised that it's not a new phone but a "Certified Like New" phone. Is that the normal Verizon warranty policy, or I somehow got the short end of the stick? I found out the GPS problem right after the 2 weeks period, that might be why I'm screwed?
The good thing is that I haven't found any problem in the new phone yet. I've run Quandrant, speed test, SD card test, screen test, GPS test. Anything else I should check?

I just got a replacement from Asurion and it was brand new . Or at least I think it was. There wasn't any stickers saying it was certified like new or refurbished.

He got a replacement through Verizon they are cln. Asurion when phones are not old will replace with brand new phones. When I had my nexus replaced through insurance it came brand new in the box but you do pay a deductible vzw replacements are free.

Also when phones have just came out in stock Verizon replacments are usually new phones with cln stickers. Pretty hard to have a refurbished phone when its only 3 weeks old.

GPS at least works now, still not great like other people were reporting (lock in few seconds even indoor).
This replacement is actually better than the one I had in all aspects. I had a few minor issues with the old one (a tiny scratch on the screen, a clicking sound when I press behind the volume button, home button sticks out too much), the replacement doesn't have any of those problems. maybe it really is new just with a CLN sticker. Anyway I'm a happy camper for the time being.

True. My bad. OP was warranty and I didn't slow down to see the other poster was an insurance claim.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
ha ha take off the stickers when you go to sell it.
It all depends on Asurion's stock of phones. Typically with a phone that was just released they will end up having to send out brand new phones as replacements. As the days move along past the release date more and more individuals have returned them or sent it something that was minor to fix. This is when you are pretty well garunteed to get a CPO product.
The iphone for example has an higher insurance fee each month because the posibilities of them being able to fix whatever is wrong with the phone is much more unlikely than with an android. So the chances of getting a brand new iphone are like 45%.
Just some background as I work for Asurion.
I had the same issue with my gps. I think if it is within 2 weeks of your purchase they can give you a new phone. I was just outside of my 2 years and I was able to call customer service and request a new phone, but since i got it over the phone, they had to charge me for it and would refund it after I returned my old phone. I just shipped out my old phone a few days ago so I don't know when i'll see the refund.

AT&T Warranty replacements: 1.85 or 2.20?

Anyone that got a replacement recently from AT&T care to share if they are sending phones with 2.20 or 1.85? I was given this as an option to replace my phone with but if it's being sent with 2.20 I'm very reluctant to go for a phone that can't be rooted.
There are rhymes and reasons as to why there is a rooting snafu after 2.20, I would say hold on for a few days

PROFIT !!!!!
I had a defective screen and had to return/exchange for a new one on 8/22 and it has 2.2 on it. I am pissed and eagerly waiting for a solution to root. I am guessing they are selling off the 1.85 firmware first, so if you are going to take a gamble, the sooner the better.
Oh yeah, my refurb came with 1.85.

My Galaxy S2's USB port died on me and I got the One X as a replacement and it came with 1.85. I got it on Tuesday this week if that helps.
A bunch of us from the i777 forums ended up getting replacement One X's each have been 1.85 units.
Just a touch off topic, but since this thread is about warranty I thought I would post here.
I bought my One X about 2 weeks ago so it is still under warranty. Would just going into the ATT store and saying it's over heating qualify for an exchange? Seems like there is a chance that I can end up with a 1.85. I'm not really sure how the warranty/exchange program works though.
Also, first post! I've been lurking for about a week and will try my best to avoid the more common noob questions.

I did my warranty exchange by calling AT&T. Not sure how it would go by stopping at a store. If you are still within your initial 30 days you should be able to get a replacement in store just fine.

I'm going to stop over after work. I don't quite know enough yet to go through and root, but I want to learn and want the option to do so. I'll update later with how it goes at ATT and if I get something other than a 2.20
*Edit: Went into ATT and had a nice easy change to a nice brand new ...2.20 HOX. Guess it will give me plenty of time to learn about Android before I mess something up.

My screen was defective and just got a replacement phone (it was still under warranty) today. Software number:
2.20.502.7 ............****.
Question......I need to send my defective phone back to at&t for the warranty. Am I screwed because it is rooted/unlocked bootloader with cleanrom currently installed? The problem with the screen is that it seems to be stuck on sleep.....I can BARELY see it if I shine a very bright flashlight on it. I hope I don't have to pay the $500 or whatever it is (if I should be asking this question somewhere else, let me know)
Thanks
i just got a replacement from at&t and its 2.20 firmware. i too was unlocked rooted and had a custom rom, but my phone was completely dead. no charging and no turning on. flashed clockwork recovery from rom manager for htc one x (gsm). it saying gsm i thought it was for our but its not. wrote the recovery partition over m y bootloader partition. and to answer the question below, yes you just might have to pay for it seeing that they can still power on+volume up and get to your bootloader seeing it as unlocked and tampered. in such cases you should ruu back to stock rom if possible before sending it in.
something to check for since you get a refurb when you get a warranty replacement, see if it says locked or relocked and check if the CID is 111111 fastboot get var cid.

Non-functioning display (works now) vs "Like New Certified Replacement"

So what would you do in this situation. Last Friday my touch screen stopped working. I was getting emails, texts, phone calls (could answer on car BT only), etc. Stopped in Verizon(not a repair center), they pulled battery but no go. They ordered my a rplacement. On Saturday, in prep for new phone, I pulled SIM and SD out. Powered up, and the thing works perfect. Strange huh?
With that being said, what would you do? Keep current phone, which I bought brand new, or keep and use replacement? For some reason, I don't want the refurb. The verizon guy did say that they do send out brand new ones that have the same "Like New Certified Replacement" sticker on them. Anyway to tell if its brand new or refurb? It has an 8/8/12 date on it.
I'm not trying to be rude but, can you see any defects with the phone that make you think it's a refurb? Like scuffs or anything?
If not, that as far as you can tell it's new, why does it matter? If it looks exactly like a new phone than it may be new, or a very good condition refurb. Either way it's still an S3 in "new" condition
Sent from my UNLOCKED Verizon Galaxy S3
Someone once said that any 'void warranty' type stickers on a refurb, like they put over the screw heads, are a different color then they ones on a new unit. Not sure if that is true.
It looks like its new. For some reason I feel if its a refurb, it was defective and then fixed and that is worse than my brand new I bought. Although mine seems to be defective as well.

Dude most cln new replacements this early in the game are brand new devices. Verizon has these phones in stock use common sense the phone has been out for around 2 months now millions are out there there are not enough refurbs to replace everyones defective devices. That being said even if it is a true cln device they are usually perfectly acceptable. If you have problems with it swap it for another.

I guess at the end of the day, if there was a way of knowing what they sent me brand new its a no brainer. It looks like there is no way of really knowing for sure, which is no real big deal. My current phone seems to be working fine since that strange incident, but having it flake out last Friday was a nightmare. Having this for work email when out of the office is critical, so I should really just swap it to avoid the incident again.
Anycut will make short cut to veiw rtn this is what you'll see, under reconditioned mine says no

So I booted up the phone they sent me, and it says "safe mode" in the lower left corner of the screen. Did some app updates, rebooted and "safe mode" is gone. Any thoughts now on refurb or brand new? I did not boot mine original phone up myself to see if "safe mode" was there on that one. It was done by sales guy at verizon.
Now the new phone is acting really strange. While doing a google backup restore of all my apps, the phone became unresposive. Just did a battery pull, which was required, now working ok.
Could my problem be my sim card? Original problem was resolved when I booted without sim card.
i told you how to check
About 3 weeks ago I got fed up with my ridiculously poor radio and called CS. In the end they sent me a "certified replacement". My certified replacement was 100% certainly a refurb. All the micro antenna covers were missing. The Serial number sticker under battery was two times the size of original and looked like it had been printed on a 1980's dot matrix printer, and best of all, it had exactly ZERO wifi reception, probably the reason it went in in the first place. After fighting with these ignorant A$$hats at CS for another few hours, and being told a software update would repair it, I finally got them to send me another. The CS told me the same BS seen above, about how these aren’t really refurbs yet. I'm guessing the bulk of them aren't, but there sure as heck are some out there, and if mine is any example of their level of technical refurb prowess, then I would be very leery and fully test the device before accepting it as good. I ended up sending them the refurb back in it's same box. Third phone at least worked, seems new, and has marginally better radio so I guess I'm sticking with it.

Android/bootloader version shipped with new S3s?

I've searched around, but I can't seem to confirm the answer to this question. I've recently been hit by the locked bootloader issue after buying a used Verizon S3 that was already upgraded to 4.4.2. I would like to pay someone to do the JTAG bootloader downgrade, but I'm not having much luck finding help with that at this point.
My question is: did this phone ever ship from Verizon with 4.3 or 4.4.2 already installed? In other words, if I buy a new old stock Verizon S3, am I safe, or is there a chance it will have the locked bootloader too?

More than likely if you find a VZW S3 in the wild it will more than likely have a locked bootloader. When the device first was available I got it with 4.1.2 on it but that was quite a long time ago. Your best bet may be someone selling it on swappa

Thanks, ShapesBlue. That's kind of what I assumed, and of course, it happened with the one I picked up.
My hope, still, was that I could find one new in the box (there are a few on eBay right now) that shipped with and had never been updated from 4.1.2. I'll certainly shop around a bit more or maybe see if there's a custom rom one on Swappa.
