Some time back I got a bt gps to go with my PPC ... added OziExplorer and TomTom and now I don't get lost any more.
I've been reading ebooks on it since day 1.
I use it to play music in places that I could never have my own music before.
I sometimes take a movie or some episodes of my favorite shows when I'm going somewhere that involves a long wait (like waiting at the airport between flights).
I think being able to do all of the above is really COOL!
I got to wondering what other incredibly cool things I could do with my PPC that I haven't thought about yet.
So here's your chance to tell me (and everyone else here) what you think is a really great way of using your PPC.
It doesn't matter what particular unit you have, or if you think everyone already knows about it ... if you think it's really cool to be able to do whatever it is - I'd love to hear about it.
Can't say I've ever used it, but I think Fullscreen Terminal Services looks great. It'll freak you're friends out to see you using full Windows Media Center and Word on your universal

Thats cool
hey..a bit off topic but can some 1 please help me set a terminal client? i have absolutely no idea how to go about it..i have all necessary equipment.
*Hey VJ did you get time to look into the icon thingy for pocket plus and Vjphone tools.
Thanks..
Nish, I'm afraid I didn't get a chance to look at the icon thing. I need to backup before installing SPB, don't want it screwing up my system, but I was working late in the office last night. Can you try posting on this board as well. Not that many people see mine!
For terminal services, look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=172248#172248
I didn't know either, and it doesn't take much. Have a look at my VJFullscreenTSC thread to find the concurrent user patch (might be on my webpage also?)
Doormat: what's cool? I'm an ebook man also (I like converting chm files to htm and using Isilo. I converted the CIA World Factbook as well, very useful, if never used!) I love watching simpsons whilst washing the pots. That's about all I use my universal for (and developing for WM5)!
V
Doormat, you could use your PPC as a remote control for your home audio i.e TV DVD SKY STERIO. I use novii remote delux. Works great and means you have full control over the TV, even when the misses has got the SKY remote.
I find that using it to make calls is COOL
I just like that fact it is multiple devices in one: a phone, organiser, sat nav, MP3 player, the list goes on.
The JAM is my first PPC- although I have been working with PDAs (Microsoft based ones mainly) for a long time at work- I always wished for someone to bring out a fully fledged PDA with phone capabilities; the JAM (and now a few others) was the perfect one to wait for.
Next PPC: the O2 Atom or Prophet
I use it for terminal server access
Citrix server access
5250 emulation
Movies
TV Episodes
TomTom
Tourch
Phone
Internet access
Remote control
Games
thats about it for now, but im always doing more with em..
How about as a paper weight?

My first pda/phone was a jam which id used to use at work as a video player! Blimey them days used to fly as sit on my VNA (its like a big folk lift truck except its computer controlled for tall racked warehouse) I even got myself a spare battery! as one wouldnt last 8 hours! ohhh them was the days.... now im the boss and Id fire anyone who was watching videos at work

Same here. Love walking the streets with a wireless headset.
I use my mini as a periscope. When I am reading the newspaper in the toilet at work I check if the boss came in using the camera.
I also use outlook as a kind of data-base of everything I know. It helps a lot, I wish I knew a more versatile and free one so I could keep the contacts by them self.
Best of all it helps me sleep. I wrote a web service on my server at home so that when my wife stays up to late tappping on the keyboard I can launch an app on the server remotely that tells me what programs she has running and lets me kill them from my ppc from under the covers.
I use it with a BT GPS receiver + tomtom and I also use it with Salling Clicker http://www.salling.com/ to control itunes to wirelessly stream music to my stereo.
Thats a about the extent of the cool things that I do with it.
Use TT5 with a wired gps and cradle for navigation, the phone obviously, watch ripped DVD's whilst I'm waiting at places, play the occasional game and surf the web or read and write emails - So I suppose I use most of the functions at some point during the working week.
Streaming Digital Satellite reception to my Universal.
As I have a Dreambox Digital Satellite Receiver which is connected to my home network I can stream video to my PCs on the network using VLC which in turn I can stream back video to my Universal using TCPMP. It works not 100% as I am getting an elongated picture and it is turned 90° to the GUI of TCPMP, but I can live with it until I expermiment some more with VLC.
I will tell you : Praying for a firmware release that clear al bugs
this is probably a silly question but is this impossible?
somehow have a usb to svid lead and some software?
i forgot about sound.. could audio be run through miniusb also?
Well, while I can't say its IMPOSSIBLE, I can say its highly unlikely to exist.
The mini USB on these devices is designed only to be a slave port (meaning, it can connect to a host, such as a PC, but it cannot act as a host to other devices, such as a mouse or keyboard... the connected device needs to host it). That being said, the mini-USB wouldn't appear to have the capability on the surface.
I have seen mini-SD cards that use the SDIO interface to control a VGA output, but the problem with the Tornado is that the card slot is under the battery, making it impossible to have a wire sticking out to a screen. And even then, its not a "true WYSIWYG" video out, but rather the ability to show slides, such as powerpoint using their software.
Now, the reason I saw that its NOT impossible is because theoretically, I've already done something similar using a Media Center PC attached to my TV. I had a video on my phone that I wished to show someone on a bigger screen, so I plugged the tornado into the PC using the USB, and started WM5torage, which effectively made the tornado a mass storage device. Then, the media center PC played the video from my storage card on the TV.
While this may not be exactly what you had in mind, I think its possible (if someone were inclined to design it), to make a box that could pull off video files on demand from your device, and then output them to a svideo or RCA jack. It still wouldn't be a real VGA out, but it would sorta make you feel like you had an ipod video.
As far as audio, your device already has a stereo audio jack. You can plug that into a Television using a 3.5mm to RCA adaptor cable (similiar to the ones that sell for the ipod video), and then a 2.5mm to 3.5mm coming out of your phone (I did that once too, don't ask why...). Won't help with video though.
Some more information that is interesting to note:
-There ARE some windows mobile devices that have USB host capability, particularly the Toshiba pocket PC's of yesteryear. They allowed usb keyboards, printers, mice, flash drives, etc... to be connected to the port directly on the device. So, that would make what you are describing much more feasible. However, the Toshiba's also supports an expansion pack that included a VGA out, so you'd already be all set if you had one of those! too bad they haven't come out with a current device in a long time (there's some new ones on the horizon I've seen though).
-New Bluetooth specifications are being laid out that include protocols for transfer of video, much like A2DP is for audio. The problem is, much like A2DP for audio, there will most likely be many hurdles with compatibility, and it probably won't be so reliable even when working.
Good luck!
That would be pretty cool, to have something like "bluetooth audio/video distribution profile"

I'm pretty sure it will need BT 2.0's enhanced bandwidth to carry all that data smoothly, so either way when this comes out, we'll need to get new devices by then.
But yea, the concept IS cool... Bluetooth totally rocks when used properly!
inasmuch as i would like to believe that such a thing can be done, dishe's right. it is unlikely. theoretically, it possible - but the cost and hassle to create something like this would not be cost effective (and hassle-effective ^_^) for the inventor... unless there are reaaally generous people out there... sigh.
anyway, check this picture out. if this were real, that would make this the perfect phone (oh, and hot swappable SDIO... almost forgot about that ^_^)

A few ways do do this...
Run MyMobler via BT and use camtasia or windows media encoder to Live Screen cap the MyMobler window. Then Stream to any format and publish. You can also play out to webcam.
There was a miniSD video output cad you can get on ebay, but for some devices where the SD card is under the battery it wont work.
Lastly there is Comvu.com try thier cab it works well with wifi and 3g

Just found it in the market and was gonna make a post about it here. After fooling around with the app on my phone, I have to say it's pretty impressive for a first release. This is the first music app that I've seen that has basic UI elements well implemented. Definitely replacing Doubletwist on my phone.
Just connected my winamp through wifi. currently transfering new music to my phone over wifi. Works just like when you normally hook up devices with usb. About 10-15 secs per song to transfer.
Wow, that's impressive. Getting now

Love it, replacing MixZing... but I cant manage to set the lock screen widget be the only lock screen...
I can't seem to figure out where to go in Winamp to sync via Wifi. I've checked all through the menus, and I'm not seeing anything. Running the latest version of Winamp too. Any help?
Pretty good but I'd still like to see the add/remove button for songs.
i.e closer to the vintage winamp <3.0 look
My only issue with WinAmp (for the pc) is that even though I have a pro license, it always crashes after exactly 5 hours of use. Doesn't matter what I'm doing. Hopefully the android app is a little better.
Not bad at all but pale in comparision to PowerAMP.
Those who try out Winamp should also try PowerAMP below You will not regret.

I don't know about you guys, but it's not showing up under Portables. I am connected to my home wifi and have wifi enabled in the Winamp settings. Is there some search function that we have to do?
it doesn't recognize your pre-existing songs on your android as being the same as your computer. it wants to re-copy them (presumably to a winamp folder on the android).
Then it doesn't exactly ask where to put them... making me think it's going on the internal SD card.... eh.
Hope they fix that in the next release.
I really wish CyanogenMod's "press trackball twice to skip track" feature worked with this media player, as it only seems to work with the stock music player
Update:
It copies all your music folders via WiFi to / , effectively making browsing supremely difficult.
It also manages to copy music to two different folders depending on if you connect via WiFi or USB, so if you finish copying via WiFi, then connect using USB, it tries to duplicate every song, and comes up with an error message that you don't have any free space left.
What the ???
New! Actual graphics and styles!
This app controls a Roku streaming video player over wifi using Roku's External Control Protocol. It's the best (possibly the only working) free one on the market and can even do a few things the paid apps can't!
Features:
Find and connect to your player in less than 10 seconds without having to manually enter its address - even works with players connected over wifi!
Roku ECP - way more reliable than the old Telnet protocol some other remote apps use
Full 12-button control including Back and Instant Replay
List and launch channels directly from your phone
Automatically jump to search screens using your phone's search button*
Enter text on your phone and send it to the player - never use the on-screen letter picker again!
*Most channels support this on most screens. Hulu is a notable exception

Changelog:
2.3 - Improved layouts and graphics
2.2 - Improved auto-scan
2.1 - Added search, channel picker, and text entry
2.0 - Added auto-detect, multi-player support, optimized layouts, and more!
1.1 - Fixed a problem where some screens on the Roku player (like Netflix menus) wouldn't respond to commands.
Updated to 1.1. Now works way better with Netflix.
MAJOR update! Auto-detect, better screen support, and more! If you thought it sucked before, it's worth another look because I sucked out all the suck.
Updated again. Now you can pick channels, search, and enter text directly from your phone!
Updated to 2.2. This adds a few UI tweaks and methods to deal with some unreproducible force closes on startup I'm seeing in around 1% of my users. If you get one, please report it with as much information as possible!
Updated to 2.3. Finally added a custom layout and graphics, so now it's not quite as ugly.
Very cool app.
Would you consider releasing open source so others could port it to Windows Phone, etc.?

Windows Phone is in a totally different language (C# I think) - there's nothing you could really port and the Roku control protocol is documented on their website.
Quite useful, thankss!
what's the difference between the free version and the pro version?
Would it even be possible to get this working with the games?
Love this app, thanks for your hard work. Better than the paid ones imo.

Roku WiFi FC on Toshiba Thrive
Ethan-
Thanks for a great program! I use it all the time, since the remote is persistently lost at my house.
I just fired version version 2.10 (as reported by Titanium Backup) up on my Toshiba Thrive (HC 3.2), which was hardware locked (with a switch) in landscape mode, and got an Force Close each time. Suspecting the rotation to be the issue, I unlocked rotation, and started Roku WiFi in portrait mode. Voila! It worked correctly. (I did a similar test on my Droid Bionic GB 2.3.4 - no problem.) With the app still running, I then unlocked the tablet, rotated the tablet to landscape, locked it, and checked again. Strangely enough, no FC when switching back and forth between another app and Roku Wifi. (Roku WiFi always came up in portrait.) However, if I actually exit the app and restart, FC comes back.
As a separate issue, please note that the auto-find feature doesn't work on my network (on neither the Thrive nor the Bionic). I have 4 Roku units, which Fing sees just fine in network discovery, and identifies by the MAC address. Manually connecting to the Roku units by IP address works perfectly.
If you are interested in suggestions, some way of accommodating multiple Roku units would be handy. At the very least, please consider pre-populating the manual connect IP address dialog with the current address so it's easier to change (rather than having to re-edit it each time).
Let me know if you'd like more debugging information to help find this problem.
Best regards,
-Jim

Hello @levuphuong,
I tried your app. It works with my samsung smart TV after setting the device (OnePlus X) as server from settings. After some minutes it showed content in "home" and played it on the TV, although pause and transport didn't work (they showed an "unsupported" notification on the TV).
I was taking a look around for some DLNA implementation on Android, as I wanted to include a "transmit via DLNA" feature in my app; something similar to the Samsung app "smart view" or the "cast" option for media file in my OPX; simply click on the file and share it to the TV.
Black screen and no detecting of media
Appearently at startup the app is searching the lan for dlna servers. During that time there is just nothing like a black screen, and it blocks any other operation on my device. So it looks like the app crashed. It would be better to have a screen with a moving bar which informs about the state of the app. When it comes back after a long time, it discovered a dlna server on another computer in my network. But it does not show media, so nothing to play. There are even no directories for vidro, audio, and pics.
So at the moment not usable. My device is a JiaYu S3 3GB

i think that problem happens when you enable your phone as dlna server and return home (it needs time to start server in phone). May be I need to improve it.
And some server show nothing because you didn't add media to that server. Recommend to use Tverisy for PC. it is free and really good.
Thanks
OK, thanks for your answer!
