[Q] Any reasons not to get the Nexus 5? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, I just bought some blackberries on swappa to trade in to t-mobile , then I'm going to sell my higher priced devices for a bit more money. Anyways, when I go to T-Mobile, I wanted to get 2 Nexus 5's. Is there any reason that I should NOT get the Nexus 5?

Yeah wait a few days to see what the S5 looks like. Other than that no. Honestly if the battery life doesn't scare you then it is a great phone.

The only reasonable reason would be to wait for the upcoming devices the next few days, especially the HTC One v2.

Well, seeing as the S5 will almost certainly be locked, or a pita to flash custom stuff, I dont think I'll worry about that. Plus, I'm looking for a phone that already has a wide selection of custom roms and fun stuff. I'm not looking for the latest and the greatest. Just a dependable phone that isn't going to crap out on me like some of the $200 phones ive had in the past. The main reason I'm thinking of getting it is because of its ease to unlock and what not. I'm not a developer, but I'm also not your average joe who can't tell the difference between root and flashing.
Also, keep in mind I do have a Moto X Dev, so how would this compare? I can't keep my dev due to the way the t-mobile ETF deal works ( i have to buy a phone from them, versus buying one online ), so I want a phone that is easily unlockable. I do not care if it voids the warranty, because I'm extremely careful with my phones and I never flash anything that I'm even 1% unsure about.

Features Vs Latest Android Your choice
S5 and other flagships will eventually get the latest but always remember the Nexus line will be first

Right. I had an S4 and honestly... Aside from the whole KNOX crap, it was a sucky phone. Touchwiz just made it suck worse. By the time the Nexus 6 comes out, I'm sure I'll have money to upgrade to it, but in the present, I'm just looking for a phone thats easy to customize. Apparently rooting and unlocking the phone is easy from what I've read. Considering I have a Nexus 7, it is pretty much the same thing for the unlock process. And then if I need to trade it in toward the Nexus 6 later on, I'll just flash stock and lock.
I mean features are nice but... for instance: the Galaxy S4 comes with Screen Mirroring, S Beam, and all that stuff. Now i'm just pulling this out of my head, but how many people actually use the features on a daily basis to make it worth the extra 200? I know I dont, thus why I felt like an idiot for getting the S4 in the first place. With the Nexus 5, from what I understand, you get the latest updates, you don't get bloat, and it's easy to customize vs going around Knox or buying a certain firmware'd (yes I know that is grammatically incorrect) phone such as the MDK build for the S4 just to customize.

if you want a device that has a lot of stable custom roms then look no further. Nothing compares to nexus devices when it comes to the developer community

and also in terms of battery life I find it similar to my S4 (in my personal experience) - so it's not bad but nothing spectacular either

I just upgraded from an HTC One S, and believe me it's better to have a phone that will keep getting updates than getting one with the latest manufacturer features, because those features will get outdated, like HTC little stunt where they just stopped updating the One S after a year.
Additionally the battery life isn't so bad with some tweaking and management and is about the same for most smartphones with large displays and quad-core processors (main culprits for battery consumption. Had mine for a few weeks now and I'm getting 12-16 hours with normal use.

best phone ive ever owned. but s5 does look good.... but for an unlocked phone from google for cheap... is good.

Honestly, This phone sounds like the exact thing you (the op) is looking for. But, it warrants disclosing that there's a reason there is so much discussion about the battery and camera on this device... They are truly the weakest parts this phone has. And depending on your use, it could be crippling, even with modification. But if you only want customization and need nothing else, look no further.
for me, these "issues" coupled with a lack of sd expansion, has made for a tough ride. To the point that I've decided to wait for whatever new things get announced in the coming weeks and I'm jumping ship.. But those are just my needs, you, and most other people would probably be perfectly fine with this phone. it's a a great phone, don't get me wrong, it's just not for me, which is a bummer, because I love the concept of the nexus line..
Unfortunately, besides this phone, T-Mobile's current crop of phones don't really have customizability AND things like sd card slots and a better battery/camera, outside of Samsung, and those phones are hundreds of dollars more..
In my opinion, If the T-Mobile xperia line was unlockable, it would be a juggernaut actually worth the extra money.
Just thought a differing opinion might help you weigh out your decision.

Yeah I mean my S4 wasnt too bad on battery, but I'm sure the N5 will be better. I'm not one to sit on my phone all day long, so even 7 hours wouldnt be bad. Plus, if it gets to the point where I need more battery, I could always buy one of those ZeroLemon battery cases.

Oh yeah I know all about the camera, battery, volume level, etc. The thing is I rarely ever take pictures, so that solves the camera problem. The battery problem can be remedied with an external battery (right?). The volume level is just its own thing, so I'll have to max it for the ringtone, but as far as music goes, as long as I wear headphones (which I always do), the music quality should just depend on the bitrate and how good my headphones are.
I saw those Xperias' the other day. Your saying they will not SIM unlock the phones? or are you talking about the bootloader?

sound level is also remedied with a simple flash of zip.

After being accustomed to SD card slot, the lack of it in Nexus was the biggest draw back for me. Luckily, I managed to get around that issue by using a Meenova Microusb reader, very handy and certainly a must especially if you're going for the 16gig version. Other than that I managed to get around the battery life issue with Greenified and a custom kernel while UV the **** out of it. It gives me about 5-6 SOT which is on par with devices like the S4 or HO so no complains there. I'd say go for it. I was reluctant on getting the Nexus 5, but after seeing the rapid and consistent developments took place in a matter of weeks, I was sold.

Yeah I have a Moto X Dev atm and even though it has 32gb , I still wanted to do my nandroid backup to SD rather than internal storage (works with CWM, not sure about TWRP), so I got a little Meenova reader. The problem is my computer won't recognize the darn thing when I plug it into any USB port. I use the adapter, but for some reason it says device not recognized and then it won't work. I searched for drivers and there are none to be found. I don't want to have to buy a SD card reader for my PC, so if you have any tips please do let me know. Otherwise, I guess I can shell out 20-30 dollars for a sd reader.

Sounds like you could have used the 32Gb version. If you care about storage expansion yet buy the 16Gb (all that's offered in stores unfortunately) it's kind of shooting yourself in the foot.

That's not really the issue.. I use a 64gb SD card for all my music.. And it only has 4Gb left. I like to carry all my music with me. So 32gb minus formatting and system use for the phone and even less after apps.. Leaves around 22 gigs which is less than half of what I need for music... My solution is USB otg.. But is a huge battery hog... And I don't have the data to stream nonstop. So, like I said, It's a great phone, just not really for me.

I actually bought that little meenova reader. It's a great little device. But USB otg really works the battery over.. And I'm constantly listening to music, my job consists of me being in my car for extended periods and I stream my music over blue tooth. So my battery goes pretty quickly, even with a custom kernel that's been pretty heavily undervolted...

Your card will read outside of the reader? The stuff that came with my meenova works perfectly fine when plugged into the pc.. Maybe it's your SD card format? Either way, that's a bummer, I would just try to troubleshoot it before spending extra money on another card reader..

This phone is absolute garbage

This phone is garbage due to poor Motorola quality. I’ve had it for a month and going to sell it on eBay. If the phone worked the way it should, it would be perfect because I like the qHD display and compact size, however, the other quality problems make this phone a bad choice. Here’s the issues I’ve experienced: Can’t use my class 10 32GB Micro SD card because pictures keep getting deleted/corrupted, random reboots, and random signal losses. Also, knowing that the bootloader is locked, not able to store files on internal memory, and having the charging port on the side instead on the bottom sucks too. Another issue I’ve noticed, it seems that many good games don’t run on this processor, especially the Gameloft ones.
I think Motorola gave up on development once they knew Google was buying them. From now on, I’ll stay away from Motorola products until they clean up their act. It’s a shame really. I've had many Android phones, including the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Nexus 1, Evo 3D and all the iphones and this has to be one of the worst phones I ever had.
I hope my new HTC Vivid I ordered is a better replacement, I know HTC just started to unlock all their bootloaders a few weeks ago. I would prefer the Skyrocket overall, but I'd rather have the high res qHD screen on the Vivid.
Class 10 is pretty much unnecessary in phones anyways, although it is annoying if you already have one. There will eventually be workarounds for Tegra/Gameloft games, we have custom ROMs in the works (ICS in alpha already), a whole campaign going to get the bootloader unlocked, and mine runs fantastically. No reboots, beautiful screen, great camera, and snappy as hell.
K cool, cya!

You got lucky. I even have a dark spot you can only see on gray backgrounds near the center. It seems hit or miss with this phone because Motorola has some serious quality control issues. I still don't understand how they didn't fix the class 10 SD issue, alot of people have class 10 cards these days. You can buy 32GB Class 10 for near 30 to 40 bucks if you look around.
Sorry you had bad luck with your Atrix 2...I love mine. Good luck with your Vivid...

I just need something to hold me for a few months until the Galaxy S3 with a quad core or an iPhone 5 with a big screen comes out. The Vivid now has custom ROMS and an unlocked bootloader, so I don't think it will be too bad.
Se ya!
You know this was a completely wasted post in this community, right? And an insult to those in here working their arse off for people like you and others here to make this phone something to completely blow peoples socks off.
If you had a bad phone, that happens I have gotten them from old Compaqs, and Samsungs, Handsync / Palm, and yes even HTC and Apple. It happens but just because you had a bad phone does not make it crap.
Now stop messing up our community with junk like this.

I apologize, I got pretty frustrated. I was waiting for the bugs to get fixed by the hard working devs, but yesterday when I had 7 random reboots at work, I had enough. Today it hasn't rebooted and works normal, this phone must be possessed by a gremlin.

Ebay it. I hardly ever lose money on phones. I got this Atrix 2 brand new for 335, I got the a white Vivid thats also new for 387. I can probably sell the Atrix 2 and get my money back. Most likely I'll only lose a 50-100.
Let me break this a little bit ^_^v
Can’t use my class 10 32GB Micro SD card because pictures keep getting deleted/corrupted, random reboots, and random signal losses.
- http://developer.motorola.com/products/atrix-2-mb865/ It doesn't say it supports Class 10 or rather any class but it has been proven that class 4/6 works flawlessly.
Also, knowing that the boot loader is locked,
- Well you know only selected few comes out with boot loader unlocked, a little research will save you some time and money ^_^
not able to store files on internal memory
- Yeah that sucks but its good to keep everything on SD just in case your phone fails you still get to salvage your precious photos and backups.
and having the charging port on the side instead on the bottom sucks too.
- Did you look at the product before you buy?
Another issue I’ve noticed, it seems that many good games don’t run on this processor, especially the Gameloft ones.
- I believe most gameloft hd games for android are only supported by tegra devices but that is soon to change i think if not there is CF3d.
I think Motorola gave up on development once they knew Google was buying them.
- Probably that is why this community has great devs working on the A2.
From now on, I’ll stay away from Motorola products until they clean up their act.
- Hard to know when they will clean up their act
It’s a shame really. I've had many Android phones, including the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Nexus 1, Evo 3D and all the iphones and this has to be one of the worst phones I ever had.

Hello guys
i need the stock Motorola ROM for the phone for the Atrix ME865
any one can help me from where can i get it
i manage to found only the Chinese one which is waste of time due that everything is in Chinese language and even if you choose English some icon and options remains on Chinese i also manage to get the AT&T version for first is for the MB865 and second the software is lock only for AT&T sim card so no 3G connection
Please help me some one
Thanks
This phone is near flawless. As good a phone as it gets. It did not work with your 32GB card is not the reason to trash it. I have a class 6 16GB in it and it works fine, A little bit of research on whether something works or not is all you needed. I would spend 15$ on a 16GB card and keep the phone instead of getting a Vivid.... And of course, sell 32GB card on ebay....;-)
You should have got an exchange when you found the dead pixel. May be you got a bad unit.

I did the same but with the Sandisk's new mobile ultra (class 6 standard) 16gb. A couple bucks more but better build quality and less likely to malfunction from my experience. It even says x-ray proof...
Interesting that you come here to complain about your problems and frustrations with the phone. Motorola would be the one to one to talk to, although it'd get you no further than you have here. It has it's issues, but most of us here are satisfied and have no deal-breaking issues.
im coming from a galaxy s II, i also have an iphone 4s, This has been my daily driver. It is a great device as it stands, i can't wait till we have some seriously tweaked ROMs/kernels... I honsestly cant disagree more, i think motorola makes a great product, and once google really puts their stamp on them the phones will be unstoppable. I do agree that there can be more dev support, but it will come, and its almost nice to see that i can flash a ROM and not have version 1,2,3 and 4 come out before i boot up!!

[Q] Gah; Handset Insanity! Help me choose my next phone

I know that you guys probably see dozens of these kinds of threads from confused geeks like me who just can't make up their minds, but I'm really stuck here. I've been up for hours reading about all of the handsets on the market right now and I just can't settle on one option that I like the best for my situation. I'm hoping that some of the more experienced users can help me out on this.
For context, I've been using an HTC Desire for the past two years no problem. I love the phone, but it is showing it's age and the internal memory is an issue. So I would like to get a new one, that can last me at the very least two more years. My budget is around 600 dollars.
I live in Canada, so the situation with carriers is pretty bad. I'm currently on Telus (HSPA+) and would prefer to own my phone so that I can bypass this whole contract crap and negotiate better prices for my monthly bills.
Anyways, boiled down, this is what I'm looking for:
Compatible with Telus HSPA+ Network (Rogers is a plus)
Either a MicroSD slot or 32+ onboard storage
At least 24 hours of battery life on a single charge
Decent performance, don't really play games but would like a lag free interface
Healthy hacking community
Good build quality and durability. It should be able to take a fall
Flash camera. Camera quality is a negligible factor but I use the flashlight every day.
Out of all of the devices I've seen thus far, I'm leaning most towards the OneX+. But I've also looked at the Galaxy Nexus and liked it as well. There is also the SGS3 but I think that phone is really ugly and don't really like it. Choices... choices... can I hear a voice of reason here?
What do you think about a Motorola Atrix 4G. It have a dual-core CPU (1Ghz), 16Go of internal memory + MicroSD slot up to 32Go. HSPA+ compatible, a great assembly quality with Kevlar. A high-capacity battery (more than one day of autonomy). A good healthed developers community.
I think it's the best phone for your requirements. It's not the all brand new smartphone, but you'll keep it for a longtime if you take care of it
GoL LuM
PS: I forgot to say it have two very powerful LEDs flash (more powerful than Galaxy S2 flash)
Sorry for my bad english

I hadn't though of that one actually. From the looks of it, everything that I want is there. However, from the development pages, it looks like Motorola is being quite active in suppressing the hacking community, especially by not providing them graphics drivers which leads to numerous bugs in ICS and JB. That might be a deal breaker for me unless an Atrix4G owner can weigh in and clear my suspicions.
Note 2 if that isn't too big for u! Idk y u don't like s3 but 20million + people who bought it can't go wrong! and u oughtta sacrifice somethin to gain somethin! Just sayin. Ur wish! And BTW one x + is great. Isn't nexus4 there? Cuz nexus is already too old!
Ps - and don't ever think of buying moto. I myself own an atrix2. They r too unresponsive / ignorant about their customers. Worst OEM ever. And they have everything locked down (bootloader), so not really much of development!

Ps - and don't ever think of buying moto. I myself own an atrix2. They r too unresponsive / ignorant about their customers. Worst OEM ever. And they have everything locked down (bootloader), so not really much of development!

The Note2 is far to big for my tiny hands, haha. The reason I don't like the S3 is because of the garish chamfered edges and the design that basically screams "no we aren't copying apple" while not offering any real inspired design. It's just too unrelentingly samsung. While Moto might be the worst OEM, I think samsung is pretty close.
Nexus 4 is out of the question because of it's pathetic amount of internal storage and no MicroSD slot. Also it is basically a glass enclosed phone so it won't have the durability of something like the one x+.
Honestly, I think I am going to go with the One X+ because it seems that it has the best internal battery, great specs, though I will probably hobble it a bit for extra battery life with a more efficient kernel. Also it seems that it could survive re-entry into the atmosphere with that fused ceramic/metal enclosure.
Then again... I might just go with the S3. I mean it is butt ugly but it has everything that I want in a phone. MicroSD, removable battery, nice screen, hacking community... damn. It's really not making it easy on my that the phone costs 150 dollars less than the OneX+. Plus the button is on the side as opposed to the top, which is nice.

Choices... choices... can I hear a voice of reason here?

man all this screams SGS3 and your better off getting it. everyone has said how much they love it. I would avoid htc though, theyve been changing for the worse...

Nexus 5 alternative choice

If the N5 doesn't live up to your expectations which phone would you prefer instead even if cost were not a factor?
Is there another carrier flagship phone that you are satisfied would be flexible enough for you to be able to do all of the following?
root, rom;
restore to stock rom if necessary;
return to store after restoring stock rom;
upgrade via carrier upgrade plan after restoring stock rom?
make a potential carrier warranty claim after restoring stock rom?
If the Nexus 5 doesn't list up to my expectations, I will go back to my Galaxy Nexus. It may not be the most state of the art device but with CM ROM's and faux123's kernels, I can't go wrong with it.

That's actually the phone I own also but I've got it pretty heavily loaded over the last 2 years. I really think I need at least another gig of ram to run well and a faster processor wouldn't hurt. The non-removable 2300 battery on the N5 is just a real disappointment. I've only owned nexus devices so far and I'm a bit concerned that a carrier flagship may not be flexible enough.

A non-removable battery might be a deal breaker for me. I like to be able to just swap batteries if needed. I sure hope it doesn't end up with a non-removable battery. I am not a fan of LG stuff in the first place and I avoided the Nexus 4 for various issues. With T-Mobile not announcing another Sidekick anytime soon, I need to upgrade. I don't like the physical home buttons on phones so that has kept me away from the S4 and other phones. My original Galaxy Nexus actually got damaged due to heavy rain I got caught in and I couldn't get another from my carrier. I ended up getting an S4 to trade my mother for her Galaxy Nexus.
To be honest, nothing beats the Nexus experience to me, and I can't even think of other choices with what I have experienced. When I think of a Nexus Phone I don't really give a huge deal for the hardware internals, because it's not really meant to be a show off with the latest hardware and the largest battery. Samsung soon will hit a 1000 cpu cores into their Exynos bully maybe, and yet their Touchwiz phone LAG and stutter. A properly minimally optimized OS over a good deal of hardware is what Google brings, not to forget the minimal design of the phone, and oh for a damn good price - I wouldn't ask for more.

I played with the LG G2 for over an hour, and decided it was too Samsung 'cheapie' plastic to suit me. The HTC One Max would be my next phone, despite an S600 chipset, based on durability and useability, and those speakers would come in quite handy at times.
prob moto x
If the Nexus is a no-go on Verizon I'll likely wait until the Moto Maker site goes live for VZW and at least get 32 gigs of internal storage. Feels really good in the hand and super smooth

+1 - love just been able to swap a fully charged battery. Extremely convenient... though from the leaks it looks very unlikely. Though I'm quite over my S4 atm and wanna try something different - the N5 looks like it could be a good choice.

That it does. That's why I have been looking forward to it. The camera sticking out a bit also bugs me about the phone also. These two things are bugging me very much. With the time I get out of my Galaxy Nuxus battery on normal use, it might be fine for me for normal daily use. If I need to go out of town though, camping, or some where I just can't get to a charger, I'll have to hold on to my Galaxy Nexus to make sure I've got something I can stretch out for a couple of days.
The wireless recharging for the Nexus 5 is something that really caught my attention as a good thing. Being able to just sit my phone down on my desk when I get in and have it charge is awesome! The screen also looks very nice for slightly under 5 inches. Hopefully the announcement and launch kicks off today.

yeah me too about the battery thing. I like to have a removable batt so I can buy an extra and swap it if my other one drains. But I think powerbanks are also helpful for non-removable batteries as well. #confusing hahaha
The Nexus has always been a developer only phone. But as it is for the camera that megapixels don't matter, so it is for the battery that the mAh won't matter. We have previously seen that the phones with an extra large capacity battery yet not perform as per the expectations. Atleast Google doesn't stuff their phones with bloatware like Samsung. A Nexus always comes with a minimal OS coupled with a balanced hardware at an unrivalled price. A non-removable battery & no expandable memory have always been the let downs, yet 32GB is enough for me for storage & a battery lasting just over a day is well enough for me. Nexus ftw !

I'm currently on an OG Note, recently bought a new battery and I have little problems with it. I'm mainly bored with it now and the USB port has some problems (€10 to fix). Minor issues and I'm sure I could use the phone for another year without ever really being bothered by it. I don't play games, so I don't really need all that raw power the new devices have. I have been looking for a new device for some time, just to have a new gadget and all.
I work for HTC indirectly so I have a One lying around here that I can use, but I can't root it so I have no use for it. I can't get used to the new Sense and their strange softkey layout (though that's more the fault of developers that don't keep to the design guidelines of Android, than it is HTC's).
I also had the S4, which I liked overall, but I found it too expensive, it had useless functions which I didn't want to pay for. Especially since you lose a lot of them when you put a stock rom on it. It has an AMOLED screen which, after two years of the Note, I'm not very happy about (uniform colours are a pain, and it degrades too fast). And it looks just like any other Samsung device (and I'm bored now). - I did get hooked on the infrared functionality though. I miss that every day.
Then the Z1 came along, looked refreshing and the waterproof stuff is a giant pro. Useless camera, but the rest was pretty good. Unfortunately the screen dissapoints.
So now I'm waiting for the Nexus 5. Absolutely no useless functions. Just a good and powerfull device that can last for another two years. No screwing around with roms and stuff and a good price.
If it dissapoints, I might go for an S4 as they're now in the pricerange of the Nexus 5 or I'll stick to the Note for another year, to see if something better comes up.
If not the Nexus 5, I'd go for the Oppo N1.
With out of the box CyanogenMod, IPS 5.9 inch display, and top-notch camera optics and dual user-controllable flash.
I have (had) the S4 and sold it today. I was extremely dissapointed with it in just about every way, and with the addition of Knox locked bootloaders being sneaked in by Samdung, that iced the "sell it now" cake for me.
I'm actually back to using the SIII in the meantime, and even with piss-poor driver support, it runs CM very well.
my choise is between Nexus 4 or Nexus 5

Actually, as far as the hardware goes, I am quite impressed with g2. That display seems so much larger than other phones of the same physical dimensions. Battery, processor, storage, etc. no limitations except no wireless charging. (except verizon version)
A play edition would be very tempting. Unfortunately it doesn't seem likely with the N5 being a somewhat close cousin. If the N5 had the exact same g2 hardware it would be a no-brainer for me even at a much higher cost.

So would you buy one all over again?

Just curious to see how the nexus 5 has done now that it's been out for awhile. I bought a moto x a while back and it's nice and all but I've got the itch to get something else and is hard to pass up the value of the nexus 5. I owned the nexus 4 prior to the x and I loved it (also loved the amount of Dev support). So I guess as the title asks... Would you buy it all over again? Any problems you've encountered in the time you've spent with the device? I want to ask about battery life but I know that's pretty subjective and also completely user dependent so I guess that's only a major concern if anyone has seen drastic problems.
Best device I've owned! Very developmental on XDA! Even popular on eBay!
I've used an iPhone 4, 5 and 5s...
I've used an SI, SII and SIII...
Nothing beats this.
The customisability and knowing that I get updates before 99.99% of the rest of the world always makes me feel good .
I love how stock everything is compared to Samsung's "crapwiz".
Battery life is amazing and it feels like a premium device... Behaves like one and... Is one!
Sure it comes with minor defects (all Nexus 5's do), but the only regret I have is not buying the 32GB version.
I miss having expandable storage, just because I like having space (have never needed to make space... Never will either , just a weird need of mine).
Android is the future... Open-Source = Endless possibilities.
I'll never want anything else!
Do you mind elaborating on the minor defects? Its good to hear someone isn't unhappy about the battery life.
The battery life is the biggest complaint for me, seems way Underpowered

I'd definitely purchase the N5 again. Usually I go from phone to phone but the N5 is the first phone that I've kept for so long. I've owned this phone since February and to me that's a long time to own a phone compared to what I usually do (buy/trade for every phone that comes out).
With this phone I haven't felt jealous of my girlfriends Galaxy S5 or of the G3, or even the M8. When I had the N4 I felt a bit like I was missing something but the N5 definitely does the job.

The m8 is definitely a premium phone at a premium price and I would of definitely jumped at it but decided not to for 2 reasons. I don't understand the 4 megapixel rear and 5 megapixel front shooter concept. I also dislike how tall the phone is. I think the bezels could of been a bit more slim but whatever.

Well, "megapixels" just specifies the amount of pixels in the taken pictures, doesn't necessarily define the actual quality. My Xperia Arc S (released 2011 lol) has an 8mp camera and it obviously takes worse pictures than my Nexus 5. I played around with an M8 before and the picture quality is actually pretty good.

Is this purely because its not "technically" up to date hardware-wise anymore, or because of a problem/experience with the device? Too close to the release of another nexus device perhaps?

Lol sorry, just wanted to be clear... Its age somewhat makes me want to move onto something else. Some other the new CPUs "seem" to have better power management in a lower power state. Plus the M8s build / feel-in-hand-quality are reeeeaaally tempting but of course the price reflects that. Buying off-contract makes that hard to stomach. The update cycle seems like a toss up- HTC seems to be better lately about updates and the nexus 5 is quite a ways into its 18mo update life cycle.
I would definitely buy it all over again. You can do pretty much anything you want with the phone; Unlocking the bootloader or rooting the phone is the easiest process compared to every other phone I've had. I've had an HTC Wildfire S (not great but it was the first device I rooted .. pita), an iPhone (which wasn't so bad, but it lacked the customization i wanted), a Galaxy S4 (a great phone if you can put up with Touchwiz and slow updates and etc. Of course you can get the Dev edition if you feel like paying an extra 300-400 dollars for a better battery and a removable sd card compared to the Nexus 5, which isn't worth it), a Moto X (no complaints other than it felt too small), and now a Nexus 5 (best phone ever).
To be completely honest, I would buy it three times over just because I don't like having what everyone else has. Everyone I see with a smartphone either has an iPhone or a Galaxy. I've never really had anyone ask me about my phone, but I've never seen anyone else in my area with a Nexus 5. I'm sure someone has one, but I've not seen one yet
EDIT: Oh yeah and getting the updates first with no bs. Of course that doesn't really matter to me because I run Paranoid Android, but just the fact that we get that is awesome.
Yeah the updates are the icing on the cake. Ease of use (as far as gaining root) is also a REALLY big deal for me. Took me FOREVER to finally build up the courage to root my nexus 4 when I had it. Im not your average end user, but I'm not the MOST tech savvy person on the planet that's for sure. The process is so simple to me now but I have nothing to compare it to (Samsung HTC or other devices)
I'm not quite sure. The HTC One M8 and Galaxy S5 each have their draws to me...
Galaxy S5:
Waterproof
WiFi Calling (I'm on T-Mobile)
VoLTE
HTC One M8:
Aluminum build
Audio quality (both speakers and headphone output)
WiFi Calling
My biggest complaint about the phone is the audio quality... The speaker is actually not terrible but the headphone output is very poor. Even my old Galaxy Nexus sounds better with my headphones. If I were buying it today, I'd probably get the M8. But the lack of an easy root would be a pain, primarily for tethering.

I am very aware of what megapixels bring to the table, but what happens when you want to blow up that tiny 4 megapixel picture and print it on a larger scale for display?
HTC downgraded the pixels because they claimed most people only take pics to upload to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. I believe they are right about what majority use the camera for but what about those like myself that require higher resolution?

N5 to OnePlus?

Just got an invite and I have until 3pm tomorrow EDT to make up my mind. Is this a worthy upgrade from the N5?
I really like teh stock n5 UI with Gravity box and Xposed. It's really smooth and flawless, with no crashes for weeks at a time. How buggy is the firmware compared to stock N5?
Is the increased CPU power noticeable?
if you ask me, its not worth the upgrade, i mean the phone is amazing but so is the N5, the 1+1 is definitely better but not worth an upgrade. I came from a nexus 4 and it was a very worthy upgrade
Depends on how much you value your money. I don't think that you should be upgrading from a phone that is less than a year old and is going to be getting an android L update.

About the only thing worth up changing to the OnePlus for would be the battery life. It does outlast the nexus 5 by a fair bit.
Other than that it's all a bit sideways really.
Mmm bacon
Lol. It's definitely worth the upgrade. This phone outclasses the N5 in every way.

Worth the upgrade. While I don't have one sadly. It is, Better battery life. More customisation out of the box. I'm on the Xperia Z1 waiting to get my 1+1.
I'm thinking about moving to this also from the N5. Is it as buggy as some of the threads let on? Yellow band, touchscreen sensitivity, ghost swipes... I don't mind flashing things here and there but I'd like something that "just works" most of the time.
I left the note 3 and am happy with this phone. Battery is just about the same for the usage I put it through. I miss the use of s pen for a few things here and there, but that's about it. Only regret is not having an external SD card, but an otg cable kept handy does the trick quite well. The n5 is a great device, I played with one for a while, but I would probably get this one over it if I had the choice. I've had no issues with yellow band or any loops. But for people who mess with their device issues are to be expected. Isn't that why we are all here to begin with?

The negative people tend to be more vocal.
Ghost swipes have been fixed, it was a problem on Synaptics, not OnePlus or Cyanogen.
battery life is a lot better on OPO than N5. its day and night difference.
I moved from the n5 to the opo primarily because of the battery life - well worth it on that front. Though it will take a while to get used to the size difference.

I'm somewhat in the same boat as you, I'm coming from my N5 to the OPO. Battery life was bothering me with the N5, I had Franco's kernel, Greenify, etc. and nothing would really help. I was lucky enough to get an invite and figured why not, I will pass any phone I don't use to 1 of my kids, so no loss. I really anticipated the N6 and I was very disappointed with the price and the whole carrier thing, I hate to be indebted to ATT, but at $650, buying it was out of the question. Anyway, I got my OPO a few days ago and have to say I'm really enjoying it. I unlocked the bootloader, loaded TWRP and rooted it immediately, it would be painful to do that after you've got it all loaded up. It's been extremely smooth, fast and responsive, I love the additional real estate thats a real pleasure, the battery is lasting significantly longer, but I will keep an eye on it during the next few weeks. I've not had any of the issues I've seen others have, so thats also a relief.
CM is a very thorough ROM and has pretty much everything I would want and will not even bother with xposed at this point. Now I think the headphone/mic thing is a bit of a pita, something to do with 2 wiring standards and OPO's choice, but both headphones I use are ok.
So all in all I'm pretty happy with my choice. Good luck.
I also moved from the N5 to the OPO. I sold my N5 for the amount of money I needed to buy the OPO so it was easy for me.
I did it for the camera and especially the battery life. Both things are exceptional on the OPO compared to the N5.
My main issue is the size. It was this or the gen 2 Moto X which not much bigger than the N5. We'll see how it goes. My wife can always use it and I'll sell her N4 for 50 bux.

to OP: Yes, buy it and give the N5 to your wife. You won't regret it, plus, the newer 1+1s should not have yellow banding. I have no problems with my phone at all.
