AdBlock Plus + Nexus 5 - Blocks MMS - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running into an issue - curious if anyone else has had/seen the issue and knows of a fix. I have been using AdBlock on my phones for a long time. AdBlockPlus now on my Nexus 5, regardless of which list I select, any configuration and whether on WiFi or mobile data - doesn't matter, if I have AdBlock running, I cannot send or recieve MMS on my device. I have tried 5 different messaging apps including Hangouts and non of them work. I have this same problem running CM11 or KitKat, ROM doesn't seem to matter.
Anyone seen this?

Never tried ABP on my Android devices, so sorry, can't confirm. But if you are rooted, you could try adaway instead - I now that it doesn't cause any issues with sending/receiving MMS or any other issue (none that I can tell anyway)

+1 for Adaway. Never have any issues with that on my N5.

I guess I will have to try AdAway, it hasn't worked as well for me in the past but with this issue ABP is having, I'll have to settle. I have never had issues with ABP, especially it affecting something like MMS.
Thanks for the advice.

Assuming you are rooted, it is fairly straightforward. I've had an error in applying the updated lists once - but a reboot fixed that. Other than that, it works fine. No issues with ad blocking.
I did have to put in a whilelist of several redirect sites - when I click on a link at SD or FW, they redirect to the destination thru' an intermediary site (for revenue I think). AdAway blocks those redirects, so had to add those sites to the whitelist tab in adaway.

The issue isn't with ad blocking, it's with MMS also being blocked. That's the deal - no matter what I do to prevent it, AdBlockPlus still blocks it. A few emails exchanged and apparently it's a reoccuring issue with their most recent update. The developer for ABP says they've got a bug logged and working on fixing it.

I can confirm that"AdAway" works with no issues

I'm so glad I found this thread, thank you! I couldn't figure out why, for the last few weeks I was having one helluva time with my picture messages! Removed adblock and they're back to working.

Adblock doesn't work with anything newer than and including Android 4.2.2 anyways.
There's an inofficial Adaway thread here in the forums with a modified version of Adaway which handles installing any updates better.

The reason MMS is being blocked is because in your APN settings MMS is set to port 80.
Changing the MMS port from 80 to 8080 resolves this issue.

[WIFI Tether] [TMOUS] Work Around - No Root Needed

Do you have a T-Mobile US device that redirects you to T-Mo's site whenever you try to wireless or USB tether your computer? Here are two work arounds to stop that:
Difficulty: Easy. ROM: Any. Description: Spoof computer web browser to say 'Android' when loading web pages.
1) Install an EU ROM. Any ROM based on T-Mobile US has a script that will block tethering if Android is not recommended.
2) (SUGGESTED) (Avoiding the script) No root needed. No APN switching (because that sh!t does not work). You need to spoof your computer's web browser to an Android device. Go on your add-ons/extensions installing page (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, maybe more) and search for a user account spoofer / switcher. I am on Chrome and I use 'Chrome UA Spoofer'. Select the Android Motorola Xoom device to spoof to. Tether via wireless or USB and it works constantly. The only downside is that some pages load in mobile view. You can easily select to show full web page. I used this for multiple hours, multiple PCs, multiple different times and never was redirected to T-Mo asking me to add tethering to my plan.
Why does this happen? Ever since Android 4.0, they added a script in the OS which does this. You cannot uninstall it because it is located very deep in the system (maybe you can, but no one has figured it out.) If you have a EU ROM (no wifi calling), then you will be fine to tether with no problems and no spoofing. Please click thanks if I helped
The APN thing does work; I use it daily for my Fire, and my laptop on occasion. Not to mention the FCC just smacked Verizon for $1.25M for blocking customers from tethering with third party apps, so T-Mobile should follow soon to avoid a similar fine.

T-Mobile should be stopped for that. But I have to say the the APN did not work for me. It worked for about 20 minutes, then I was never able to connect again.

Actually they don't have to allow tethering, nor will they be fined. This was a rule specific to LTE implementations. Since T-Mo is on HSPA+, those rules in no way apply to them.
Also, to the OP -- this works, but you need to keep in mind that it only would apply to web browsing. Tethering is detected via packet identification. The combination of the TTL (time to live) and the device (Android vs computer, etc) gives tethering away. If you were to use bittorrent on your computer, the packets would be identified as computer, and with a computer TTL.
Dang, that sucks. I thought it had to do with data limits, since they aren't required to allow it for their unlimited customers.

It's been figured out over on the Sensation forum. It's a tether apn set to be hidden in the apn.xml found inside the framework.apk, if I recall correctly. Steve from the Elegancia Rom should be able to help.

How did you get FoxFi to work? I tried it and said it won't work on this device. And when I use bluetooth, the tethered device can't do certain things outside of the browser.

Then you are using the wrong rom,I was using Elegancia rom and it worked for me. You can't just root the stock rom and expect it to work, there is a separate hidden tether apn built into the framework.apk I believe.

[Q] Devs! Custom Roms and Ad-Blocking.

Morning all, just had a few issues lately with using sites that require ads to work, ahem... Ad - fly with mobile browsers ect.. I've been flashing my note 2 with stock roms, aosp roms.. and not noticed a problem until last night (tried to use a certain ad sustainable site as mentioned above) and it came back telling me I'm using an ad blocker (none installed by myself) I'm almost certain I've used the site on my note once before... But have no idea what rom I'd of been on..so i have been searching around google loads, all the same answers are coming up..however they are simply not working for me ?!
I've deleted the host file, edited it to basic form( a simple one line entry as google suggested)... Tried apps that fix this type of error... All to no prevail... flashed zips via recovery that swapped the host files for another!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Btw i have even gone back to stock, to double check its just not a silly mobile browser thing, but nope, worked fine on stock.
This is on my mind all the time as its annoying when you cant seem to solve an issue !

Can't download certain Apps: Error 497

Hello all,
So I have TWRP 2.6 for my boot recovery on my Transformer Prime TF300T and just installed CyanogenMod 10.1 Nightly build. I couldn't get the 10.0 most recent stable build to actually load up. But the problem that I'm having is now certain applications give me a "Can't download: Error 497" from the playstore. And I get this error with "Goo Manager", "Clean Master", and for some reason "X Comics". But everything else downloads just fine. I've uninstalled, reinstalled the ROMS several times. Done wipes up the wazoo, and so this should be as clean as can be. Like I said, everything works great, but I just can't get those applications. Hoping someone may have a solution.
Thanks.
This sounds similar to problems that I and others are having over here. Does it happen when using cellular data or WiFi? If it's only with WiFi, who is your ISP?
The TF300T is Wi-Fi only. So Cellular isn't an option for me on this device. My ISP is Comcast. Just seems really weird that it's only specific applications.

There are a few causes. Are you using app2sd? Have you fixed permissions? Have you cleared its Data and cache ( under settings / application manager )?
Have you modified your build.prop? Have you modified your dns ( or has another app modified it ) ?
Quoted from a wiki : " Error 497 is related to a downloading category and you usually encounter it while you try to update the applications using a WiFi connection. In this case, adding Google DNS addresses (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) to your router's configuration settings could solve the problem. "
If none of this works, just google for the app as an apk file and sideload it. Its not a fix for your issue but you can at least get the appp you want installed.
Download the following apk files using your tablet's browser. Then click to install. They are all the latest versions available on the market. I downloaded them on my note 2, backed them up, and uploaded to dropbox for ya.

Heres xcomics : http://db.tt/TfLdPn0O
Heres goo manager : http://db.tt/QmvZfkAN

I have done a number of complete factory resets, wipes of not just cache but also system and data, with fresh factory images placed down, and I still get the same problem. The only thing that has fixed it for me on my new Nexus 7 has been to use my cell phone's tether so I connect over Sprint instead of Comcast, or to VPN into work which accomplishes the same thing. There's definitely a network issue somewhere, I'd strongly suspect a problem with accessing Google's CDN for app updates.
To answer some of your questions, I have not done any of that, and I'm not sure if any applications messed with my DNS, although I don't have a DNS service setup on my router, so not really sure how that would happen. And I'm not sure if I've fixed permissions yet or not, I'll have to look in recovery and see if I can't figure out a way to do that.
If you haven't guessed by this point, I'm pretty new at all of this. So I'm kinda' learning as I go. I very much appreciate the links for the apk's, and I have downloaded them so you don't need to keep them on your dropbox if you don't want. They work just as expected, so I do appreciate the assistance.
Thanks
If you have a chance, try taking the tablet somewhere where internet isn't provided by Comcast. If you look at the other thread, most of the people there are on Comcast. In my case, as soon as I connect with my phone over WiFi tethering everything works as expected. It's only when I'm on Comcast that I have issues downloading or updating apps.

When I get an opportunity to do so I will. Currently, I don't even know what apps won't work. Since I downloaded the apk's directly and what not, those were the only 3 that I knew were screwing up. But when I get a chance, I'll give the wi-fi a try somewhere else.

[Q] Wifi connection, no internet access.

Hi all,
This question has probably been asked; the problem is not a lack of solutions but there simply being too many - I've no idea where to begin with troubleshooting. Everything I've seen is just to general to be of any use.
Basically...
I installed CM11 (nightly build for my Motorola Moto G, AKA falcon). I've stripped down some of the GAPPS using the 'Barebones' guide on the CM wiki, e.g. removing the Google+ program I don't use, and the stock broswer (replacing with Lightning from the F-Droid repo). I've also installed various other programs to enable me to have absolute control over the device - AdAway, AFWall+ probably being the only two of interest.
I have no internet access either through data or via the house wifi; I have confirmation the problem is confined to my device since no one else in the house has problems, and my laptop and desktop work without trouble (incidently, the router has recently been changed also, so I now have the problem confirmed on two access points). It's not a reception issue either - the device connects fine to the router (albeit with fairly weak reception because of my distance away), in the 'Settings' dialogue I can see it 'Obtains IP address' etc without any obvious error message/hangs/stalling (and in settings displays itself as 'Connected').
Aside from being directed to a fix, I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me some kind of 'here's how you troubleshoot Android internet access' tutorial; I've got a bit of experience with desktop Linux, and more still with Windoze (albeit unwillingly) - I'm quite comfortable fiddling with the network manager or trying different kernel modules out. On Android, I've just no idea.
So far I have tried:
- Reinstalling the ROM (on both installs, the problem occurs after a few days to ~ a week of normal functioning).
- Uninstalling the AFWall+ (I think it's a DroidWall fork - acts as a frontend for iptables) on the last install, and on this one fiddling with the settings (unticking and re-ticking all boxes to allow on roaming/mobile data/wifi connections
- Uninstalling AdAway (on the last install only)
- Issuing 'ping' in the terminal. It's now just returning an "Error: Unknown host" message, yesterday when I was having trouble with the router, it was returning to do with insufficient privileges (even after I'd ran su to login as root).
-Turning the device on and off (in desperation only).
- I can also confirm the internet access affects not just Lightning (i.e. my browser) but is system wide - Skype, BBC iPlayer, weather updates in cLock etc.
As is probably obvious, I feel I've done little more than bash the screen with a rock and hoped for the best (metaphorically speaking).
I'm wondering if maybe there's something wrong with my hosts file - or else the way packets are sent/received, since Adaway will have altered that, and AFWall+ also. Maybe some bug whereby rules applied by AFWall+ are misinterpreted by iptables to block all access? Any help investigating this avenue in particular would be really helpful.
Also, just in case it wasn't clear, I've got full functionality of everything else, no crashes, able to make/receive calls and SMSes fine etc.
Cheers,
AA.

AFAIK the dev has had no problems, and the two different installs I've had have been different builds.
Also I've no idea where to start to find a new ROM; Linux has the fantastic DistroWatch, but no such resource exists for ROMs (AFAIK).
Finally...I'm quite fussy . CM is just the right balance of features - if you want 'em - and stock, vanilla (or even barebones) if you don't. I had a HOX+ in the past, and so many of the ROMs for that were all about eyecandy and glitter - fat I'd rather trim.

When I installed the ROM, yep. My method is to wipe everything then sideload (IMO it seems cleaner ).
Otherwise, no, and don't see why it would make a difference, and would have no idea how to do it anyway...through the recovery, or is there a way to do it when booted?
No offence, but I get the feeling this is the blind leading the blind xD.

TextSecure

Whilst waiting for RMA to return this phone I've decided to have another go at trying to setup the phone to my liking and if successful in doing so to keep it.
Had issues with Viber but sorted that out with changing APN settings.
The issue is now is that I can't for the life of me manage to get the Textsecure app working.
I never registered with the included Whisper Push app & have removed it via Titanium.
However the Textsecure app is unable to start a secure session with another android user with N4 phone ( which was used before on all previous Android phones). Texts don't get sent.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can get this app working?
Thanks.
Do you happen to usw xprivacy? It is known to Interferenz with textsecure. Besides I'd recommend to visit the github site of text secure, the guys over there are really helpful and probably able to address your issues.

Yes I do use Xprivacy and have set the permissions exactly as on previous phones and even allowed all permissions.
I'll look in the Github.
