[Q] Devs! Custom Roms and Ad-Blocking. - General Questions and Answers

Morning all, just had a few issues lately with using sites that require ads to work, ahem... Ad - fly with mobile browsers ect.. I've been flashing my note 2 with stock roms, aosp roms.. and not noticed a problem until last night (tried to use a certain ad sustainable site as mentioned above) and it came back telling me I'm using an ad blocker (none installed by myself) I'm almost certain I've used the site on my note once before... But have no idea what rom I'd of been on..so i have been searching around google loads, all the same answers are coming up..however they are simply not working for me ?!
I've deleted the host file, edited it to basic form( a simple one line entry as google suggested)... Tried apps that fix this type of error... All to no prevail... flashed zips via recovery that swapped the host files for another!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Btw i have even gone back to stock, to double check its just not a silly mobile browser thing, but nope, worked fine on stock.
This is on my mind all the time as its annoying when you cant seem to solve an issue !

[Q] GIF Troubles with certain ROMS

I noticed after installing Jordan Elliott's compile of the I997 UCKJ2 leak, that websites with GIF animations are not showing up no matter what browser I was using. After searching thru some sites it seems like Android by default doesn't support them or am I reading that wrong? Also I swappped back to gtg's Infused v2 ROM they work again. Is there added code that allows proper function? Only other phone I have messed with was an HTC Inspire but it's browser definitely was different then the default browser. Ultimately I would like to know if there is a way to fix or if I am installing ROMs incorrectly to cause that issue?
Well seems to be an issue with AdFree blocking stuff on certain websites. It apparently downloaded automatically when I set up my Google account. Works fine once I kept it from installing.

[Q] N7100 Keeps Reinstalling Google Crapware. (Long)

This is gonna be long, so please bear with me.
New Android user here, since December and never looked back.
But I have a big problem that just started two days ago, and coincided with the installation of Vonage for Android.
My N7100 is rooted and I also installed a new kernel (Perseus), but kept the stock ROM for the time being, but I'm getting closer to installing CyanogenMod ROM through ROManager Premium.
I just read the article posted here by Will Verduzco on Android security which led me to a bunch of articles on VOIP and it's scary.
My problem is that my N7100 will kind of do a half-baked reset without my doing anything... and then after watching the download light blinking on my router here in the house, Airport is downloading for about five minutes and then, BANG!!!, up comes the screen asking me for my language, and to set up a Google acct, Samsung acct, and I have to re-enter the passwords for my WiFi, etc, etc... you know the drill.
What's causing this?
I've been on XDA hundreds of times doing research on one thing or another, and I've removed all the Google bloatware possible except for the few things that I want to keep, and I got that comprehensive list from the XDA site... but after my device gets done doing it's thing, everything is back with dozens of notifications... AND Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, Triangle Away, SuperSu, Root Explorer, ES File Explorer/Task manager, etc are all missing and no backups on the SD card. WHAT!!!
One more thing which might be peripheral to my problem.
A couple of days ago I installed the new OS for my Mac... 10.9.
With my prior OS, I uninstalled almost all of anything that said "Google" from my computer but have to go through it again and repeat.
This morning, I do a search for anything Google on my drive, and came up with files with executable update files that all had "Android/GT-N7100 in the path.
Yes, I did connect to Kies by USB just once to check things out there but I don't think that's the underlying problem. Maybe it is.
I've seen some REAL genius help on this site, and hope that somebody that has a grasp on my problem can help.
I joined this site a few minutes ago just to ask this question, by the way.
If I went off track as to the posting guidelines on the site, just tell me.
Hey, I'm pushing 70 and the mind wanders. Haha!
Thanks in advance, guys!

as for your note 2 problem, so your saying you flashed Cyangenmod on it correct? if so did you flash a the current gapps for whatever version you flashed? im thinking that's the problem, otherwise another flash of the cyangenmod ROM might fix it.

No, I haven't flashed CM yet, but as I said, I'm moving in that direction after looking a a bunch of ROMs.
This is gonna sound kind of dumb, but the reason that I'm holding on to the stock rooted ROM is just because of one active screen saver, and that's Windy Weather. Like when it's raining here, you get rain drops sliding down the inside of the glass. HA!
And believe it or not, I agonize over the small stuff... like whether or not I want to go with an AOSP or AOKP ROM.
Believe it or not, when I got done with massaging the stock ROM today, all of the junk that I had formerly removed through Titanium Backup were still gone even though it showed that it was all re-downloaded in the Notifications.
I just have a sneaking hunch that the Vonage VOIP App that I installed had "something" to do with my problem, so I have not reinstalled it, and I also destroyed all of the Play Store links with Titanium Backup and still no problem.
I'm still running the stock 4.1.2 stock ROM.
Even if I do go with CM, I'm a little worried that if I download Gapps, something in there just might want to gain control and zap my device again.
Anywhooo... for the last several hours, I'm not having any problems.
Thanks for your reply.

[Q] Wifi connection, no internet access.

Hi all,
This question has probably been asked; the problem is not a lack of solutions but there simply being too many - I've no idea where to begin with troubleshooting. Everything I've seen is just to general to be of any use.
Basically...
I installed CM11 (nightly build for my Motorola Moto G, AKA falcon). I've stripped down some of the GAPPS using the 'Barebones' guide on the CM wiki, e.g. removing the Google+ program I don't use, and the stock broswer (replacing with Lightning from the F-Droid repo). I've also installed various other programs to enable me to have absolute control over the device - AdAway, AFWall+ probably being the only two of interest.
I have no internet access either through data or via the house wifi; I have confirmation the problem is confined to my device since no one else in the house has problems, and my laptop and desktop work without trouble (incidently, the router has recently been changed also, so I now have the problem confirmed on two access points). It's not a reception issue either - the device connects fine to the router (albeit with fairly weak reception because of my distance away), in the 'Settings' dialogue I can see it 'Obtains IP address' etc without any obvious error message/hangs/stalling (and in settings displays itself as 'Connected').
Aside from being directed to a fix, I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me some kind of 'here's how you troubleshoot Android internet access' tutorial; I've got a bit of experience with desktop Linux, and more still with Windoze (albeit unwillingly) - I'm quite comfortable fiddling with the network manager or trying different kernel modules out. On Android, I've just no idea.
So far I have tried:
- Reinstalling the ROM (on both installs, the problem occurs after a few days to ~ a week of normal functioning).
- Uninstalling the AFWall+ (I think it's a DroidWall fork - acts as a frontend for iptables) on the last install, and on this one fiddling with the settings (unticking and re-ticking all boxes to allow on roaming/mobile data/wifi connections
- Uninstalling AdAway (on the last install only)
- Issuing 'ping' in the terminal. It's now just returning an "Error: Unknown host" message, yesterday when I was having trouble with the router, it was returning to do with insufficient privileges (even after I'd ran su to login as root).
-Turning the device on and off (in desperation only).
- I can also confirm the internet access affects not just Lightning (i.e. my browser) but is system wide - Skype, BBC iPlayer, weather updates in cLock etc.
As is probably obvious, I feel I've done little more than bash the screen with a rock and hoped for the best (metaphorically speaking).
I'm wondering if maybe there's something wrong with my hosts file - or else the way packets are sent/received, since Adaway will have altered that, and AFWall+ also. Maybe some bug whereby rules applied by AFWall+ are misinterpreted by iptables to block all access? Any help investigating this avenue in particular would be really helpful.
Also, just in case it wasn't clear, I've got full functionality of everything else, no crashes, able to make/receive calls and SMSes fine etc.
Cheers,
AA.

AFAIK the dev has had no problems, and the two different installs I've had have been different builds.
Also I've no idea where to start to find a new ROM; Linux has the fantastic DistroWatch, but no such resource exists for ROMs (AFAIK).
Finally...I'm quite fussy . CM is just the right balance of features - if you want 'em - and stock, vanilla (or even barebones) if you don't. I had a HOX+ in the past, and so many of the ROMs for that were all about eyecandy and glitter - fat I'd rather trim.

When I installed the ROM, yep. My method is to wipe everything then sideload (IMO it seems cleaner ).
Otherwise, no, and don't see why it would make a difference, and would have no idea how to do it anyway...through the recovery, or is there a way to do it when booted?
No offence, but I get the feeling this is the blind leading the blind xD.

I dont know, try to flash different rom and see if it will happen again or not. If not, problem is in that rom you already have.

[Completed] Recovery with broken GooglePlay

So my Google Playstore app broke after a mod (or a few days after an app [Stickman"] was "botified" [strangely, GPlay reinstalled it after I flushed it]). The "not responding" toast popped up more and as the corrupted files spread throughout my GAPPS over a couple days. Resultingly, I lost use of my VPN and also TWRP, both of which apparently depend on GPlay to function, (because I PAYED for them). The many solutions sadly did not apply here. I had Flashify, which I had loaded with my backup ROM and GAPPS, but when I went to go into recovery, the android (a Galaxy S4 4.4.2), couldn't go to boot, instead going to the ODIN Download page. I guess Flashify ALSO depends on a working GooglePlay app system to function. The kicker is, I have an identical Galaxy s4 ALSO in bootloop (removing the more commercial elements is DANGEROUS!) that has no CWM or TWRP installed that I was hoping to be able to save. I have my apps backed up on Titanium, both user and (corrupted) system, but I realized too late that TiB is only good for user apps. GPlay is sadly lacking at backing up the non cash-cow apps, so TiB has proved extremely useful. I loaded the ADB drivers (thanks to an awesome dev) on my friends PC, along with the custom ROM & GAPPS, but have zero luck loading them on either device (the serial number etc. fails to appear), perhaps it's a timing thing, or wrong commands. I have been thrilled and fascinated during my experience exploring this fantastic tech, but perhaps the fun is over. Is there any way to save these things? I am disabled and cannot afford but to try and fix them myself. The tutorials I've repeatedly gone over seem to lack the precise circumstances I am experiencing. Certainly, the multitude of solutions to the Gplay failure, though helpful and edifying, also lacked these factors. I really hoped for the day when I would know all the "Why's"; and "How's" regarding these things, but it doesn't look promising here. ANY USEFUL ADVICE would be GRATEFULLY RECEIVED.
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. The best thing you can do at this point is flash the stock frimware with odin and start over. But, I don't know what variant of the S4 you have, i337, i9000, etc. so can't give you the proper link to help you.

Trying to unlock the bootloader, please help ??

Hi Folks.
Just picked up a very nice old EVO Shift and would like to root it.
Certain problems have arisen immediately and I hope someone can direct me in how to solve them, please.
To start with - right this minute all I have is an old XP PC, so the tools for newer OSes will not work for me right now.
I have searched here and in general extensively and found many possible answers - but cannot get anything to succeed yet.
The HTC Dev site allowed me to join, but instead of getting to the bootloader unlocking area it just demands that I log in over and over - so I cannot do it that way.
(I tried maybe 5 different browsers, clearing cookies, cache & all that - same results.)
Kingo has a specific tool for this - but apparently it just uses the HTC Dev site in the background and it fails as well.
The htcsupertoolv3 opens - but it also depends upon that site and also fails.
Many sites recommend downgrading the phone from 2.3.4 to 2.2 - but their files were uploaded aeons ago and I have not been able to find a complete solution anyplace.
The phone connects fine to my PC, I have the drivers & ADB & I've been working at this most of the day today without success.
Right now seems like a good time to give myself and the phone a rest and to resume tomorrow when I get some time...
Any help will be hugely appreciated.
Thanks

Is there no hope for this very nice older phone ??
As of now I have managed to find all but the ShiftRR tool and hope someone here still has that & will help me.
Thanks.
