Back And Menu Buttons Not Working When Headphones Are Connected - General Questions and Answers

Hi guys
When I connect my headphones to my Samsung Galaxy S4 the menu and back buttons at the bottom stop working. The home button still works though. As soon as I unplug my headphones, all the buttons work again. And as soon as I plug my headphones back in, they stop working. I am using Carbon Rom. It seems as though plugging/unplugging my headphones toggles my menu and back buttons. I have tried rebooting and battery pull to no avail.
Any fixes for this? Thanks!

bump
any ideas?

bump. still having this issue. I am on Carbon Rom. I have tried stable and nightly builds

[Q] Volume down button does not work?

Just received my tf today, everything was working great so far but then I noticed that the volume down button doesn't do anything although the volume up button and power/lock button are clearly functional. Any idea if its a hardware/software issue? What should I do?

My tf's volume up and down works but my power button doesn't, I can't turn if off. To turn the screen on I have to plug my charger in or eject my micro sd.
Posting my issue because it sounds like we are having similar problems.

received mine today aswell and my volume rocker doesnt work. All it does is make the volume slider show up on the screen but doesnt lower the volume. Other than that love it
I'm having the same problem with my volume up button. Aside from that, I'm loving it.
Those with volume issues hold the power button and shut the tablet totally off, should be fixed after restart.
+1
It is a known bug and when I rebooted the TF, everything back to normal. Try it.

screen wont come on but I still have audio

So I've had my Transformer for several months now and it's been great. Today was the first time I've had this issue where my screen wont come back on but I can still hear emails and other audio happen in the background. This happened earlier today and then suddenly the screen came back on. Well about an hour ago it happened again. I tried turning the screen on and nothing but i'm still getting audio.
I've tried holding down the power button for 5+ seconds to try to get it to power off but it's not turning off that i'm aware of. Is there some other type of combo i can do to try to get it to respond? I've also pressed the power button, vol up and vol down to make sure no button is accidentally held in.
Any help? I would like to get this working again and not have to RMA it. I'm also running Prime v1.82 ROM.
When the screen went dark were you moving the TF at all? Any recent jarring? Sounds like possibly a connection has come loose. Just a thought.

how can i check the connection? Is there a "how to" for accessing the internals of this unit? I would like to check that before sending the unit back if possible.

Try holding down the Power + VolDown key at the same time. This will reboot your device...
I don't know if this pertains to your particular issue but are you running a different launcher? If so it may want you to choose which launcher at startup. If the picker window pops up and doesn't show because of a bug in Honeycomb the screen will go dark and you won't see the picker window. When it does it again try turning the screen to portrait and then back again to landscape and see if the picker window will show. Of course you will need to have Auto Rotate screen checked on in the settings for you to do this also.
I had this happen one day on my phone, and it was the launcher issue....

Headphone button control don't work sometimes!!

I bought galaxy s3 3 weeks ago and i found this problem. With stock 4.1.2 XELLA and original samsung headphones, sometimes, randomly, button on the headphone dont respond to press. After 1 or 2 plug-out,plug-in or a restart they come back to normal. The mic still work even when the buttons are unresponsive. Anyone had this problem? i dont want to hard reset the phone
sometimes that happens to me and if i hold down VOL DOWN on the phone for about 2 seconds, then press VOL UP it goes back to normal
i made an update from xella to emc2, made a hard reset, problem still here. The buttons only response to long press, like answer button that start google now. I try another headphones and still do the same. No solution for that?

Xperia J and headphones with buttons

Hi all
Just installed the AlienRom (I've got a locked bootloader) and taken back by the difference it has made to my phone. It's like a different phone. Great work!
One problem I had before and still have and was wondering if any one had any ideas or experience:
If I use head phones with a volume up/down/pause (3 buttons) I have to hold down a button as I plug them in to get sound out of them. If I don't press a button on them the music continues on the phone's speakers. The buttons do nothing afterwards either.
I've tried 2 different headphones with the remote buttons like this to the same effect, some Altec ones and some iPhone ones. I'd love to get the buttons working so I don't have to remove the phone from my pocket and turn the display on to skip tracks!
I've tried turning on the feature of holding down the volume buttons to skip tracks in the Xperia Xposed app but it has no effect, I think that's because that's aimed at 4.4 reading around. I'm stuck with 4.1 with this locked bootloader.
Thanks!

Nexus 5 buttons won't work

Hi, I'm having a problem here.
I've had my Nexus since Jan 2014. Today, I accidentally dropped it from around 50cm (With Spigen armor case on) and suddenly, the hard buttons stop working.
I cannot turn my phone on but I can force restart it (when I long-press it) so I know its a hardware problem. I can go on recovery mode/bootloader and use the volume buttons and power buttons to select and all but I can't use it on my 5.0.1 L. I tried reflashing 5.0.1 but to no avail. Any help?
Thank you.
Bump-chikki-chikki-bump. I really need help, guys! It's my daily driver.
What do you want us to do? You said it was a hardware problem. Repair shop or RMA it...

Best option is to have it fixed.
Quick fix would be to flash a ROM or kernel with double tap to wake (DT2W).
Hmm. Okay, noted. Thank you.
Are you sure it's a hardware problem? You said the power button works when you hold it down to restart the phone. I'm having the same issue where the power button (AND VOLUME BUTTONS) don't work in any ROM but I can hold down the power button and volume button to get into recovery and restart. It's only intermittent too so sometimes it will start working and then sometimes it stops for no reason and I can't work out any pattern. even reflashing a rom doesn't fix.

Same here!!
I've been searching for possible causes and fixes for the EXACT same issue - hardware buttons work fine in bootloader but unresponsive in Android. I've only ever run stock and reflashing made no difference.
I am of the assumption that it's NOT a hardware issue, since long-press to reset works fine and volume/power buttons consistently work OK in bootloader (not intermittent at all).
Since I've reflashed to stock several times to no avail, I guess the next option is RMA. I do keep pondering if this is a Lollipop-created issue, but that doesn't fit the symptoms...
exactly, if it was a lollipop issue a lot more people would be having the same problem.
