I am currently running stock with franco kernel 32...
i always see that my ram consumption is always very high about 1 gb...
i have auto sync off and by using gravity box module i often clear all the apps but still i get this high ram usage.. the apps i use are mostly paid version and dont have adds. I use greenify as well but still usage is high..
in my cached processes google search and aosp keyboard consume around 100 mb of memory
will this affect my battery life.?
pls can someone help?
Don't worry. Android uses as much ram as it can. Unless you're seeing performance issues if just leave it alone.
Hi,
Nothing abnormal to have about 1Gb used (there was a thing about RAM usage in the last version if I remember right, but not with R32 so...).
Maybe not necessary to clear often the recent apps (nor useful).
Nothing to worry about your battery life.
You apps stays in memory for faster use, let Android manage its ram, with 2Gb (a bit less for user/app) it's enough...
Ram is supposed to be used. The old adage "free ram is useless ram" applies here.
The ram device itself will use power as all components will however, it is "always on" it doesn't matter if its 1MB or 1GB.... it's same power regardless.

@viking37 thanks,so u mean its better to leave them as they are. no need of hibernating them?
@rootSU thanks u! ya i had heard that in linux as opposed to conventional windows belief its rather that free ram is wasted ram.. so even if i start a game a high requirement one the OS will do the job itself?

Re,
No, what I mean is let your apps currently running like they are, in the recent apps. If a day you are really very low in memory for whatever reason (like 200-300Mb free for example) and you experience lags, reboot ant it's fine. But Android will do the necessary before (unless a "huge memory leak" like we have seen or some wrong memory management settings caused by a "RAM manager app" or some "magic RAM script").
My opinion was not about Greenify in particular, I have no opinion about it... If you need or want to hibernate them, do it, for the other apps, leave them running
Not sure if I explain myself well
If you want post some screenshots of your apps running and cache process to see, but with what you said it seems that there is nothing wrong...

i shall leave it to the OS memory management..I just checked there's no rogue app consuming memory.. the ones which are running seem quite justified!:good:

ps. this applies to pretty much all desktop OS's as well as mobile in the past 10 years or so.. linux, windows, osx etc.. 90% ram usage or more should be normal unless you have an insane amount of ram in the system.

I would like to know what are your guys readings of RAM usage. Mine sits around 240MB/339MB
Is that high or normal? I do have quite a bit of widgets on different home screens so I dont know what the baseline is. Please share your results.

Task MAnagers!?!?!
I'm not sure if i am 100% right about this maybe won of the senior members who does know can enlighten us on this...
But I remember reading somewhere that task managers some times can hurt your phones RAM usage. I don't use one anymore unless it comes stock. and then I rarely find a reason to open it on mine. In standby I am running around 80-100 with 200-300 of freem RAM so with the SGS4G i don't think i will find a reason to use more than the stock utilities. I somtimes will installl a tool to monitor the RAM to see what I'm usin but every once in a while I go through and uninstall anything I don't need right away. I figure ussually being in good internet coverage I can always put something back.
So does anyone else know about wether or not the "Task Manager" could actually be a tantric in some cases?

So widgets are the ram hog on this phone? I have been constantly clearing ram in the task manager to help with speed. I only run clock, battery, and calender widgets on my device. Are they enough to boost me all the way to 240+ even after a RAM clearing? Considering the age of this thread is this still the case with new ROM's that are starting to roll out? I'm still stock, and very noob to android devices, but the urge for mods is growing given the positive responses to them.

You shouldn't have to worry too much about RAM usage. A lot of it used by the OS. But yeah widgets does lower it and whatever app you're using. But I hope you don't resort to using task killers just to save 50mb's of RAM. It's there for use and shouldn't be looked at too much.
Mine shows about 400/626, but haven't noticed any big difference in battery drain when it's at 300/626.
Simple answer....everything hogs ram. The best way to tell what's worse is settings » applications » manage applications and watch your ram usage when you have certain things running. You will notice what is hogging more than others.

Thank you for the info everybody. Been ruinning just fine all day with the ram almost maxed out, hard to break that task manager habit though lol. Goona keep reading before I root-flash-mod need to make sure I get it right the first time.
On the moon our weekends are so advanced they encompass the entire week
Samsung and Tmo set many bloatware to run ALL the time and hogs RAM
via Linda file manager and auto memory manager (which tweak's android's memory management, not a standard task killer), i saw many apps that always run (many with priority equals to android system and the phone app) such as "wifi calling, visual voice mail, my account, qik, device management, drm, etc.
not everyone use these apps and they take up precious RAM and tiny amount of CPU cycles.
worse, however, is how the phone keeps loading unused, unaccessed, unwanted apps into memory (been weeks since I used pandora, yet it keeps getting reloaded into memory).
from clean boot, I get 150mb free. after a week, I get 45-55mb. This causes memory manager to kill off app as soon as you switch away and alot of stutter (dont you hate it when your browser gets killed)
Dont know if theres a fix for this. I tried tweaking the OOM parameters but it doesnt seem to work on this phone. Samsung probably tweaked something that broke this.
I'm curious about how much free ram everyone has on average after their rom has finished booting and stabilized! Post it here!!!

how about a screenshot? that's pretty good!
Here it is. It bumped down to 237mb by the time I thought to screenshot it.
i run about 40-80mb free on average just the way i want it.
Android uses ram differently than other operating systems like windows or linux,
it fills your ram with things that you have run already in hopes that youll run them again and it will be alot faster the second time. if it needs that ram for something else, it just kills a program and removes it from ram (this takes VERY little time)
so the more ram used the better

thats about all it holds. the VM heap settings are what causes this (in part) each app gets its own virtual machine to run in, this has a limited heap (ram) size of whatever is set in there.
so if your VM heap size is set to 48mb... 48 * 5 = 240mb and 48 * 8 = 384mb
add in whats needed for Android system, kernel, and various background processes that you need... its all gone

that's what I'm sayin! if the OS already has the program your trying to launch in memory, it wont need to load it, saving time and power.
and if you kill programs forcefully, android (kinda) treats it like it crashed, and reloads it into memory soon after...

it all depends on what your min-free settings are.
the apps that fall into each category are slightly different for each ROM, but whatever the highest setting is at is what your free memory should sit around, and it can and will fluctuate alot for seemingly no reason.
and before you all go out and change them as high as you can, just know that free memory is wasted memory, it takes NO power to keep things in memory, but it does take power to put things in memory every time you open it!
This explains it a bit better than i can.

I don't think you can download RAM.. I know you can add RAM cards on computers and laptops but they have certain limitations(plus, they are hardware which you have to buy and apply correctly).. and on an android phone I'm not sure.. so if you could provide more details it would be great.

Sewrizer said:

You can't increase RAM without the hardware (again, as far as i know). the only thing you can do is to use less RAM, thus making the device faster and more effective. try freezing the apps that you are not using with titanium back-up. a lot of apps work on background and you don't even need them. by freezing them, you prevent them from auto-starting. you can unfreeze them to make them work again. (you need to be rooted for this)

And then we get into the old falacy that "Free RAM is good". This is simply NOT true on Android. If you start running too short on free RAM then the Android system starts to kill applications to free up more RAM, but RAM is there to be used.

Useless? Not necessarily, as long as you know what you are doing and are 100% certain about the apps you are freezing. However, I have never seen any real benefit in doing so. The Android built-in task manager normally does a failry good job of managing the memory without any real intervention.

Manually killing them is something I do as well. I just don't buy into the task-killer type apps.
Sewrizer said:
I was suggesting freezing and killing unused apps on background because on phones with low RAM (his gio has less than 512 MB of ram) system is laggy, mostly because of pre-installed software which users don't use. He said he has just rooted his phone, therefore he can't have uninstalled the network carrier apps/social networks apps, which may be running on background. And in my experience as an android user, if anything is laggy or stops working, i restart the phone. And after restarting it always works smoother.
About the android built-in task manager, it does indeed do a good job, but on 2.x android versions is a little harder to find and use. thanks for replies

Freezing / killing the apps as root can be useful, but as I said you need to be certain what apps you are freezing and why. How many times have you read on XDA from someone who has frozen a load of the 'Background' apps, and then finds their device won't even boot up and they have to do a full flash to recover, often losing a load of data as well?

my phone is samsung galaxy gio s5660m and yes i rooted
So I Have been spending a lot of time and effort with my GS3, tweaking the kernal and rom for battery performance and it seems to be working well, now I need to address my Note. Its gotten really slow and feels laggy. My memory used by running apps is less then half. I have greenify freezing a bunch of stuff i dont really need. Im rooted on stock for Rom, with stock Kernel. I was eyeballing some Roms but really dont want to lose any TW functionality, but was hoping to hold off on that until some 2014 Roms popped up. I run Apex as a launcher right now.
Has anyone noticed speed differences with Custom TW Roms or Kernels? or have a good CPU monitor app, they all look pretty, meh, on the play store (i really wish you could see number of dl's and raters from the list view on the play store)...
Up for any suggestions....
Your problem likely has nothing to do with "available RAM" or "processes".

I'm sorry, but both of those apps are essentially useless. Task killers are completely unnecessary with the version of Android we're using, and "Seeder" type apps have been shown to have no benefit (the entropy pool is refreshed a different way in post 3.0 kernel versions).
I'm still waiting for the OP to tell me how much free space is left on his internal flash; that measurement has actual deterministic correlation to lag.

I'm aware that seeder does not work as well for Ics/Jb, compared to 2.x. On my Razr, seeder has more obvious effects on 4.0, 4.1 compared to 4.2 and 4.3. Perhaps I have a crapload of apps/games on my phone/tablet so the effects are more obvious.
Boths apps are free and are reversible so no harm trying.

Might as well be- its page says it "fine tunes android systems inner memory manager to keep your device fast over time", so it modifies the various low-memory-killer limits so Android does the killing, but the idea is the same. People have to get out of the mindset that "bloat" means anything, need to remember that unused memory is wasted memory and that the system has a better idea of how to manage the apps you've chosen.

OK, something isn't right here. Can you do me a favor? Run "adb shell df" and send me that?

Might as well be- its page says it "fine tunes android systems inner memory manager to keep your device fast over time", so it modifies the various low-memory-killer limits so Android does the killing, but the idea is the same. People have to get out of the mindset that "bloat" means anything, need to remember that unused memory is wasted memory and that the system has a better idea of how to manage the apps you've chosen.
You have a 32GB unit, right? If not you're looking at your SD-Card, and I need to know the used/free percentages on your /data (or /sdcard, close enough) partition. But if you do have a 32GB device, that's actually quite empty, which is a good thing. If you're rooted, have you tried running an "fstrim" app on the device like this app?
No, not at all- in fact, you're underusing most of your memory.
From where? When do these occur?

Yup, it tweaks Android internal memory killer. I won't recommend this if it didn't work for me.
Changing it to moderate preset is pretty safe.
Thanks, I'll send that probably Monday. Thanks again

While it may not seem like it, this im sure is the problem. I do get the "only xxmb left of internal memory" warnings, but im not sure where im looking to clear that up... im only using half of each..

How odd! I got today this same warning too. I have 2,2gig free space i my internal memory and I was installing some app and got a message that i have only 1,48mb free or so.

We have two note 10.1 tablets(wifi only). One is 16 gb the other is 32 gb... On the 16 there is about 5.6 gb free. When installing some apps from google play we get the same message . and it says 1.48 free.. I think this is a Bug with the new play store. The message will NOT Come up when side loading apps is what i have noticed.Unless it prevents you from installing the apps i would not worry about that message.
Wait for 4.3 and the TRIM support.

We have TRIM already.

Yes. The stock kernel has it, see that "discard" option:
Code:
/dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /data ext4 noatime,nosuid,nodev,discard,noauto_da_alloc,journal_async_commit,errors=panic wait,check,encryptable=footer
... and my kernels have that, plus at boot time I run "fstrim" on every partition:
Code:
/system/bin/logwrapper /sbin/fstrim -v /data
/system/bin/logwrapper /sbin/fstrim -v /cache
/system/bin/logwrapper /sbin/fstrim -v /system
4.3 runs that last part more often, but technically if the system is running the "discard" option on the filesystems, at least once at boot should really be enough.

hmm. I dont have a PC to connect to, and am having an hard time finding something i can run from my Note. any suggestions on how to run ADB Shell DF locally?
i use system tuner pro. esp if you are rooted. gives a great overall outlook on what is going on with the system.
i personally haven't tried any custom rom's yet. and i can tell also my Note starting to feel laggy.
really hoping a 4.4 custom rom comes along. I heard they added IR blaster support in 4.4 and would really love that to be available. really the only functionality holding me back from custom roms atm.

Hello guys!
First of all, my english isn't that good, so I will try to do my best!
So, I have two questions (and sorry if this is the wrong place):
1-) About RAM management: Where can I check what's running in the background (and using my RAM)? And how can I "kill" all these applications rapidly?
2-) I noticed that my SD card can be used as an "extension" of my internal storage. So, im using a Sandisk Class 10 card, but, when I picked the option where it uses my SD card as "extension", it said that my card seems to be slow, and I may improve it. Then, I ask you:
2.1-) Why am I receiving this message?
2.2-) Using this option, may I suffer more "lags" and framerate slowdowns (while playing) than if I picked the another option?
That's it.
Thank you guys!
1) you don't, and can't in the stock ROM... You shouldn't ever manually kill tasks. This hasn't been an acceptable thing since Gingerbread or maybe early Jellybean. This will literally slow down your device, the Android (Linux) kernel handles this job, free RAM is wasted RAM, this isn't Windows. You can see average RAM usage in Settings, Memory, but you can't close anything here
2) to my knowledge everyone gets this message regardless of its speed, it's kind of a "bug" I guess. The second part of your question is tougher to answer because people's experience vary widely with no consist variable like card speed, RAM, or variant. Best I can say is try it and see.

ok! Thank you for the answer!
But, i.e. if a game (or an application) need more RAM to run smootlhy (just an example), how will the system manage the memory?

Android will automatically remove stale or older tasks as an application needs resources.

But how the multi-task function works then?
Only the active task will use CPU&RAM?

Google is your friend here, but I think this article will give you the answers your looking for, even though it's focus is on something else, it explains ram management quite well...

Have you tried ES Task Manager?
While I read these articles, just another question:
By clicking on the recents apps button (square) and dashing them to the left or right, am I killing them?
Thanks

Yes, but unless you have a very good reason to, don't.
I have one app I do this with, Pokémon Shuffle, because if I just home out instead of back out and close, it keeps my phone awake and it won't go into deep sleep.
Kernel RAM management since KitKat is very good most of the time, unless you have a very good reason just let the kernel do it's job.

Running services is in developer options now if you really have to kill a pesky app
I generally kill apps like games, chrome, whats app, in the recent apps tab.

Killing Chrome and Whatsapp will only slow down opening them later... There is no other gain, same with games unless leaving them in the background prevents the device from sleeping. The kernel will kill the tasks when needed.
This isn't opinion, it's verifiable fact. Killing tasks manually has a negative effect on performance and battery life 99% of the time in modern Android devices.

So, these apps wont "consume" CPU & RAM while background? I will never fell any performance issue (gaming) due to background applications running?

Correct, you should not... RAM is treated differently in Android (Linux) than Windows.

Ok, brother!
Thank you for your help! I appreciate it!
Since my questions about RAM are gone, i will test the performance using the games stocked in the SD card.
EDIT: Definitively, no difference between stock the game in internal, or SD. At least talking about framerate.
