[Q] Battery charging but not showing that its charging - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's charging just fine, but it doesn't show that it's charging. Running GT-P5100 CyanogenMod 4.2.2.
Keep in mind that it's charging fine, but doesn't show me that it's charging. Do I factory reset?

Try THIS way
1. Reboot in to recovery mode
2. Wipe battery status
3. Reboot
Hope it helps

This is not what I mean. My tablet is charging alright, but it just doesn't notify me that it's charging. You know up there, the charging circle spins when it's charging. Not for me, but it's still charging.
It DID spin in the past, though.

Have you changed charging cords? Is this through a wall or computer USB?

Well, not a wall... I used a plug extender, and tried it in the wall but still doesn't show. I might try buying a new charger.
By the way, the charger is a USB that is plugged in the you know, plug. I think you know.
Anyways, My friend borrowed me his white iPad, and I noticed that the plug is from his iPad. I called him to look at his plug, and it said it's made by Samsung.

[Q] Battery Staying at 100%

I've noticed that the battery meter will sometimes stay at 100% for a while and then all of the sudden drop to the actual percentage sometime later. A reboot after unplugging the phone will fix the problem and report the battery % at the correct level. I was wondering how many other people were experiencing this, or if it is just a hit or miss thing?
I'm still on stock, unrooted, no mods. It's a straight out of the box Skyrocket.
Also, does the problem remain after rooting, modding, etc.?
I asked this on the battery results thread in general, and only received one response, so I figured this would be better in Q&A.
I had the same issue, but it has only happened one or two times.
Showed 100% for hours then rebooted and it showed 73%
I don't know how long you've had your phone, but it takes several cycles from full to empty for the battery to calibrate correctly. During that time you can get some really funky readings on it.
I am experiencing the same problem.
I've also had a hard time charging the phone. I've left it plugged in upwards of 18 hours, only to find it saying its only 83% charged. That may just be another symptom of the same problem though.
Do you think this is a phone or a battery issue?

That sounds like you were plugged into a pc vs ac power and had heavy usage during that time.
Mine charges very quickly when at idle and plugged into the wall.
I've had my phone since the day it launched (the 6th) and just experienced this for the first time yesterday. It was indeed quite odd to see.
I have had this happen one time. I also noticed the phone got very hot.
It actually happend yesterday, stayed at 100% almost all day then just shut off and wouldnt reboot.... freaked me out!!

I think that the battery is pretty wonky. I am not sure if the NFC addition is causing these issues but some people are having amazing life ans some people (me included) get horrible. I am getting a warranty exchange on my battery. No way I should drop 12% in an hour and 20 minutes when the only usage is 19 minutes of checking email. If I have to have it plugged in every time I turn around it is not exactly a wireless device now is it?

Strange, I was just reading this thread and thinking I have never experienced this. Then I checked my battery stat and it showed 100% even though I've been using it for an hour and a half. I restarted and now reads 90%.
Had my phone for almost a month. Rooted only on stock ROM. Just took it off USB cable from laptop an hour and a half ago.

I think we narrowed it down to being a bad charging circuit in the phone or battery triggered by a .1a charger.
When we got our new skyrockets they stopped doing it.

I was powering my phone off, plugging the power in and allowing it to recharge. The phone would automatically power on as soon as I connected the power but I didn't think that mattered. It turns out it did. If I powered the phone on and then connected the power, the battery meter would work correctly.
This was different the Captivate I had previously. That phone had the capability to charge while powered off. There was even a charging graphic that displayed while the phone was off.
The Skyrocket did not have this same feature when I originally bought it. However, ATT did an update at some point and now it does. I've been unable to re-create the stuck battery gauge since that update.
please only use the charger that came with the phone. other chargers, after prolonged usage, may cause issues.
The charger that came with most skyrockets is a .1a charger and causes the issue as well. A few reported getting .7a chargers in the box but most have been .1
I have tested the iPhone charger theory on 5 phones now. Phone 1 and 2 experienced the issue. Phones 3-5 did not
Its more than just the charger. The phones experiencing this either have a bad battery or it's in the phone

From day 1 with the skyrocket, I have used an old wall charger and cable and had this problem daily. I plug it in at night and in the morning, it's at 100% until I reboot, or some other random event that drops the percentage to the real battery stats.
Because of this thread, I dug out the box and used the wall charger and cable that came with it, and this morning shortly after unplugging the phone, it was at 99% and dropping, just as it should. Very glad I tried this.

I did a recheck of my black cube SR wall charger (Samsung part # ETA0U80JBE).. It is NOT .1a it is 1.0amps - which - interestingly enough is EXACTLY what my iPhone3g power cube right next to it delivers.
The .7am Samsung charger has the usb connector on the side, and is part number ETA0U60JBE - delivering 5v at .7 amps (30% decrease over the little cube device). That was the charger my SGS-II had. My S/R came with the 1.0 amp ETA0U80JBE version.
One amp will charge the phone MUCH faster than the USB port. Per the spec, the typical USB device cannot drain more than 500mA (1/2 of what the power cube supplies to the phone).
Unfortunately Apple and Samsung both have the cubes pretty well locked up, so I cant compare the components, but at a first glace they appear to be absolutely identical, both putting out about 5.1 volts at zero load.

Chargins issue on NEW EVO SHIFT

My wife had a problem with the screen on her EVO SHIFT so she went to a sprint store and they ordered her a replacement phone. it came in on Friday. I have it rooted and running a custom rom and kernel. that part is OK. HOWEVER, it doesnt seem to charge. I have tried 5-6 different cables (AC Charger). It seems like it is charging and you can see the charge % go up SOME but it seems to never get past 50%. I also tried different batteries (I have 4 spare batteries). The Amber charger light is on and the phone says it is charging and connected to AC.
Any ideas what would be causing this? I thought about it being a bad charging port but it is showing connected and charging... Any help would be appreciated....

What ROM/Kernel are you running?
You might want to let the battery drain completely, then plug it in and see if a battery charges. If it does go to 100% (which it should), then thereafter, reset the Battery Stats.

Running Supreme Sense X with dodge kernel 1.6.. his evening I got it to charge to 100% and the green light came on.. took it upstairs and plugged it in after a few minutes... the light came on amber and it said it was charging but after about 2 minutes went off and was no longer charging.. I then pulled the charger out and pushed it back in and it started charging again. I giggled the cord and the light didnt go off.
HOWEVER... just went in and the light is green again.. picked up the phone and giggled the cord.. light when off.. then I unplugged the charger and plugged it back in.. now its amber again.. I wonder if it is the port.. this is a replacement phone we got from a service center that we had to wait over a week for. I would hate to have to un-root and take this back for a second time.. its a pain to unroot and then get a phone and have to downgrade and re-root.
Im reading that the EVO SHIFT has a LOT of bad charging ports.. is this true?

The EVO Shift does not have a history of Bad Charging ports. Because it's a Refurb, there may be a possibility of it. But it might also be that when you jiggle the USB Cord your momentarily interrupting the connection enough to make it think it's been Unplugged. Then the device detects that it's plugged in, it starts the charging process all over. Also as a built in safety most devices do not charge the Battery to 100%. What happens is the Battery is charged to a preset level. Usually between 95-98% , but it will register as 100% . This is to prevent overcharging of the Battery. That is why when you first unplug a device the battery appears to drop the first 1-5% very quickly. Then drain slower after that.

Do you have any other odd issues occurring? Did you do a Full Wipe before Flashing?
If you have another shift, check the battery in it. I've said before, and I'll say it again....some of these shifts end up with a bad sensor somewhere for the battery. GF has the same problem with hers, but when I use her battery, it's charged 100%. Phone needs to be replaced, or needs to be checked in hardware. It's not a rom isse, charging port issue, or anything else.

...pretty sure it's not the charger. The charger doesn't decide when the battery stops filling. Something isn't reading correctly. Maybe it's a system issue, something software but not the rom (like a faulty BIOS as opposed to the OS)
Sent from my PG06100 using xda premium
The charger can sometimes be an issue if it's not the Factory Charger, or a suitable replacement. I've seen several people run into issues by not using the correct charger. It is quite possible to damage the device, and the battery by not using the correct charger. Also some of the cheaper car chargers do not have an over-charge protector built in. While saying "over-charge protector" is a misnomer, what your actually trying to avoid is the battery continually trying to be charged when it's already charged. With some of the cheaper chargers it will cause the battery, and or the device to overheat.

I have a feeling that the power saving mode on slows the charge down. That's the only setting I had changed recently.
Ill test tonight.

I had the same issue for a bit. Someone said to try disconnecting and reconnecting the usb from the power block about 4 or 5 time relatively quickly and that fixed it for them... tried it and have not had an issue since even when connected to an extension. But also make sure its firmly in.
Oh.. and do this with the note plugged into the mini end of course
I have to say that I have been very happy with the crazyondigital wall charger that was bundled with my case. I used the OEM charger for the initial charge but began using the crazyondigital charger because it's more convenient due to the fact that it's longer. It also seems to charge more qiuckly. Perhaps slow charging with the OEM charger has something to do with the USB wall wart wiring design.
I seem to have the same type of problem I had mine on charge for 2 days now I done nothing different in the way I normaly charge, I tried both having ny note off over nite and with it on both with no luck, both time my note not fully charged.

Had the same problem yesterday. my note went out of energy and shut down. So, after a while I connected it with the cable to charge. And what happened? After a hole night I got only 50% -.- I was like wtf?? then I tried the galaxy s3 charger and there was a red cross on the battery icon. Then I tried the note charger, again nothing, and like the other poster said, after a few times in and out it worked again.
another one here with slow charging, this is a big problem, its so slow it means it drains when you are using the tablet when its plugged in, you should be able to use it and charge at the same time. I could understand if it didnt charge much when I was using it but to not charge at all is a real fail.
Has anyone logged this issue to samsung?
Nothing has solved this problem for me.
Taking 8 hours to charge 79% is just beyond comprehension. Can't use it plugged in as it drains anyway. I want a update asap or I'm ditching this tab.
I don't know what caused this, it was fine a few weeks after the update and suddenly crippled.

So it's not the update then? If it was fine for a few weeks and then suddenly crippled JB is not the problem.
More likely an Application is NOT properly compliant with JB and is draining battery or hogging

Nothing shows up as running and hogging the battery. It doesn't drain fast once charged. It just charges slow.

Indeed, it charges so slow it drops when you are using it plugged in, if anyone has registered their tab properly with samsung perhaps they could log a fault, I havent had chance to do this yet.
Also, has anyone tried switching back to stock to see if it resolves it?

[Q] Tab won"t boot/charge has power

Heard my tab dying from across the room so I went and got it to charge it and it won't bring up the charging animation. It also will not power on while plugged in or unplugged. It still has some remaining power because I can get it to boot into Odin mode but that's it. PC will recognize it in ODIN mode but no visible signs of charging.I am rooted on stock everything else besides CWM. I have left it on in ODIN mode unplugged to try and drain the battery 100% to see if it will charge from dead but its been 10 minutes already so I'm not sure how long that will take. No charging via original charger, PC, generic charger, Galaxy S3 charger, iPad charger, etc...
Try put your wall charger in and leave it for at least 15 mins..
then long hold the power button for at least 15 secs..
this will wake it from deep sleep.you should see the charger icon flashing then can power again and turn it on.If the answer is no sounds like needs to be repaired.ive had this before mine went into deep sleep and i thought it died but came back.
Left it plugged in for 7 hours and it won't do anything now...
EDIT I'm gonna hope it s the battery. I ordered a new one from Samsung today, we'll see when it gets here. said 10-20 days. It seemed to me that the battery life was very short anyways when I got it secondhand. I could go like 5 days or so with my transformer as opposed to a day or so with this tab.
Ok, so I got the new battery and installed it. tab booted right up with 40% battery life. I shut it off and plugged it into my PC to charge as my oem charger is broken and I'm waiting for my new one in the mail. It (finally) charged to 99%. I let it drain completely so as to calibrate the battery and now it won't charge off the PC USB again...
Hit it with a TWO AMP SAMSUNG A/C charger. ie. SGS4 (Sorry for shouting). Max charging A/C rate (from memory) it's actually 1.5 A. Edit : here it is....
https://github.com/UpInTheAir/P6800...mmit/064a3f7de67380c997e21f9a899a5d4996eb80c4
I hope you never deplete the battery to zero again.....
Although there are "protection" circuit to hopefully prevent battery damage, deleting to zero can still do this. There is no memory effect in modern device batteries, but a large (uninterrupted) charge cycle will help with calibrating your battery. But to be always on the "safe side", not from zero.
Depleting to zero might not be the only cause, but hope using a better A.C.charger (that your tab recognises and allows full input) will help you. some chargers will supply the full charge current, but the tab won't accept it.

I found that if it goes flat it wont charge off USB, you need to charge it from the wall charger, like UpInTheAir said, not enough amp off the USB ones
I fiddled around with my charger and removed the connector that plugs into the wall and plugged a cable into it (prong was broken off my charger) and it charges fine now. Thanks for all of your time guys, looks like it should be OK now. Still waiting for a new oem charger in the mail.

No problem, but I mentioned a TWO amp charger...... Give it a good "kick start"
So how were the sockets?
There might be some useful info here:

Thanks for the guide , I will study it when I get back from work but the internal connector looks fine. I did forget one thing that maybe important,
When I had tab open and plugged ito my note 2 wall charger ( which is 2.0 amp 5v output) the battery stayed cold but the long silver metal strip to tbe right of the battery became warm to the touch...... not sure what tbat means though.
Is the note 2 charger too weak to kick start battery?
Again thanks for your time and effort.

If the Note 2 charger works with other device, I can't imagine being a problem with it.
Sorry, haven't studied the internal hardware, so can't offer any comment on that.
If you could somehow connect up a external power supply and try charge you might have success or narrow down the problem (if it's actually the battery or part of the charging circuit). Maybe you could PM the OP of that guide for further advice. Seems he's been fairly thorough and recent experience with our device internals. But please report here your outcome, we can all learn something.

Adding to my previous post, there are many examples of this suggestion on the internet..........
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-tips-for-extending-lithium-ion-battery-life/
4: Avoid completely discharging lithium-ion batteries
If a lithium-ion battery is discharged below 2.5 volts per cell, a safety circuit built into the battery opens and the battery appears to be dead. The original charger will be of no use. Only battery analyzers with the boost function have a chance of recharging the battery

.
The cut-off level may be different, but same principle..... That's why it's been reported that a high capacity and good quality charger has been able to "kick-start" dead (sleeping) batteries into life.
I have no idea about using or obtaining / connecting "battery analyzers with the boost function" to your battery. Please refer to the previous tutorial link I gave you (which may or may not help).
Cheers,
UITA
Update on my tab. All efforts have failed so have ordered new batt and am awaiting arrival. Will post if it works or not so orhers may gain some insight if they experience similar issues.
Fingers crossed chaps.

I had a similar problem where I let my Tab battery drop too low. I tried various fixes, similar to the ones in this thread. Finally got it to work by letting the battery totally drain by leaving it on the Samsung logo, then opened it up, disconnect then reconnect the battery. Then charge using the wall charger. All good.
P.S. Be careful when opening the case. Refer to Youtube ''How To" vids.
Has anyone seen, or recovered from the below symbol (battery with yellow triangle and a crossed out plug)?
I left it in my luggage for a few days and when I took it out it was around 20% so I just turned it off. Later it wouldn't turn back on so I charged it overnight, over 9 hours.
I've tried holding power and volume down and I can get into Oden mode but otherwise it won't respond.
I tried the hold power button and touch screen for 30 seconds method as well, the farthest I got was the swirling Samsung screen during bootup, then it shuts off.
Afterwords it alternates between a battery charging icon and a (see attached) battery icon with a yellow triangle and a crossed out plug. Has anyone recovered from this?
I just passed one year since I purchased it and am in the middle of a long business trip where I typically depend on it so will be bummed if it's trashed. I don't mind replacing the battery but am not sure if this is the solution, and won't be able to get a battery for about two weeks so I hope there is another way. Many thanks!

For the sake of anyone who has a similar problem. I believe this was due to a faulty charger, which I bought off Amazon so assumed was good. I took it to Bestbuy and tried with one of the display chargers and everything worked as expected. It's a pain but at least I know the battery isn't bad.

[Q] Charging decharges w/data on

My phone's battery goes down if it's charging and the data is on until the phone dies. I'm using miktouch and Hyperion's extended battery. It also doesn't seem to charge fast at all (12+ hours). Once it's "dead"it will power off, then randomly go back to 100% battery (orange light to green light).
Anyone else have this issue?

First guess is you have a defective battery. Draining while connected to the charger should never happen with a good battery.
I guessed as much too. These Hyperion batteries go bad quickly. I've had five since January.

Have you ever used the Anker batteries?

I've not used them, but everyone I've talked to says they're the best.

I just got mine. It says to not use more than 4.2V to charge it. My chargers are all 5.0V. What kind of danger am I playing with buy not buying a compatible charger?

With LiPo batteries there is the danger of explosion/fire. I have an Anker universal charger and note that the output when plugged in is 4.2V. However, USB ports output 5V, so I would think the Anker battery can tolerate that otherwise you would not be able to charge the phone by plugging into a USB port.

I hope so too.
So, brand new anker and the battery still decharges when plugged in and goes full charge once the phone is off. I'm thinking there's something broken with the phone and not so much the batteries.

From a lot of the comments in this forum, I suspect the phone has a charging circuit controlled by software rather than hardware. Before you do anything hardware drastic, you might try flashing a different kernel.
Also, you report that the battery leaps to 'full' when you disconnect the charger. Have you tried measuring the battery voltage physically with a multimeter to see if the battery is charging at all. Should be 4.2V when fully charged. Something like 3.6V when empty. Obviously if you put the battery in for half an hour and the voltage goes up, it's charging no matter what the UI says!
I've not tried either of those. I don't completely understand what the kernel is. I'm using Miktouch rom, but I don't know how much that has to do with the kernel. I know the battery is being charged because if I leave it plugged in for a good 8 hours it holds its charge for the day. And if I leave it plugged in for say, half a day, and turn off data/wifi, it will slowly show increased charge, like a percentage per half hours of charging.
What do I need to know and do to flash a new kernel on here?

Your the only one of my users to ever have this issue, including me. And the doubleshot was my last device before going Nexus last February.
What I would do is:
1. Backup all your user downloaded apps with Titanium Backup.
2. *Do a full wipe from recovery*
*Wipe data/factory reset
*Format system
*Format Data
*Format cache
3. Flash MikTouch and reboot.
4. Once rebooted don't go cramming apps and settings back into your phone just yet. Make sure its going to charge and drain like its supposed to. If all is well, then start 1 by 1 with your apps, making sure each of them are not causing your issues. If all tests are passed then something in the ROM its self went stupid.
Sounds like hardware though.
