The way i did this on my nexus devices was to delete the downloaded update zip file and then launch the update from the notification. It tries to update but gives up as there is no file to update from. I never got another notification.
If rooted you can use greenify app to hibernate 'Motorola ota'. This seemed to do the job for me but didn't test too much as a week later I updated anyway anyway.

I think that tick box is asking whether to display notifications from the playstore for app updates.

the "show notifications" in app settings is related to the notifications of that particular app, not play store updates
if you want to disable playstore update notification. follow this
1. open playstore
2. settings
3. untick notifications
You need to root and then disable Motorola ota app .it wont let you without root.

Hi, I stand corrected. You are quite right. Whether all apps actually adhere to that option is another matter I guess, I wonder if an app can still display a notification even if that box is ticked.

You can download the AdAway app in market, if you are rooted, or searching in google for every app you have installed recently.

Thanks I will try this.
Addons Detector or AirPush Detector will tell you which app/theme/etc. is responsible.

I heard that google did something about that. It was carried by an app(s) that you downloaded. Apparently, they told the app devs to take them off in a certain timeframe, or else they'll be removed from the play store. And ad blocker apps, that I know of, can't block those ads either. At least, adfree doesn't.

It's true, but with adaway you can select the option "scan for adaware". It' simple, it can tell you the adware app or apps you have installed. The second solution is usin rom toolbox with the option autostart manager and find the app. Then you must long press the app, go to advanced and disable some receivers of the app. For example "Airmob". This isn't very simple, but with a few try you can stop these annoying ads in the statusbar. I did this with Mosquito killer and now it works. Usually it FC when it must send you an ad in the statusbar, but the app works fine.

I'm pretty sure that setting controls all popups but I don't use hangouts. In messages, click more to get options. Then click on notifications. There are settings behind it

With HeadsOff lollipop heads-up notifications can now be disabled!
No root needed.
You can also restore the ticker text in the statusbar!
Give it a try:
Download from Playstore
XDA thread
What about preventing text messages from turning the screen on every time one comes in? Any idea how to get do that?
If you rooted you can edit csc files to do that
I'm using stock rom and used the in phone software update to upgrade to Android Marshmallow, and since then the notification count stopped appearing on installed apps icon like whatsapp, facebook, etc.. Although it's still working on SMS, missed calls, emails, and other pre-installed apps
I've tried to uninstall and reinstall whatsapp but still not working
The notification count used to appear well on these apps icon under Android Lollipop
Anyone having the same? Any suggested solutions?
Do you have icon pack installed?

Go to app in settings menu, clear data until there's nothing to clear. That will fix the issue

That really doesn't fix the issue for me because I was doing it all night long and it wouldn't clear it up. I would actually have to uninstall one or two of the system installed apps and have it update and then it would show all the apps in the application list afterwards.

What really sucks is that it doesn't take immediately and it's kind of hit-or-miss. I hope I don't have to do it too many times.

Hi
Since a while I don't get any notifications from the xda app when I get quoted or mentioned. I checked settings of the app and from Android.
Anyone else?

Since xda app is based on tapatalk... Should be similar
