[Q] PRL write? QPST does not work on Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On Galaxy S3 there was a way to do PRL write and load Sprint corporate PRL. I have spent past couple of days trying to search the forum and the interwebs for a way to do it on stock Nexus 5.
Anyone figured out a way to load in (and have it stick) PRL manually?

There is really no answer to this? Hard to believe

Why do you need it on a nexus 5?

Because I am on Sprint and most accounts don't get corporate PRL, which allows for more roaming on Verizon. Ever since Sprint deployed LTE in Boston, they have totally disregarded inadequate 3G coverage... So you can't get data on the subway, which I could do before on S3 with corporate PRL

Where does one find these "interwebs?"

Nexus 5 does not have Qualcomm chipset (I think it is VIA), so you can't use the popular QPST to manually write a PRL of your choice. Hence my question to see how it could be done on our chipsets.

Yes, I have seen this thread. Challenge it, it is more for flashing in other CDMA providers where you are only doing 3G.
If I follow steps outlined, I would kill the LTE.
All I want is to manually write in another PRL into the phone.

The Nexus 5 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC silly goose.
However, I researched this for you and the link posted by lilotimz has a post near the end of the thread using CDMA Workshop to flash PRLs.
After you get your Nexus 5 in Diag mode.
I remember using Sprint Tools on my galaxy nexus to flash the 00001 PRL, but I don't know if you can do it on this device.

I don't have this phone so I am not sure how to do it. You might do some other searches on loading prls with qpst on similar Motorola phones. To pull it is simple if you can get qpst working with it. You just hit read instead of write.

Looks like it's a bit more intensive. I'll have access to the phone all weekend on a family camping trip. If I can get wifey and mom to watch the kids, I'll dig it out of there
I don't mean to sound overly noobish... I understand what PRLs are, but how could changing them be beneficial? Is there some way to just simply have you phone lock to the tower with highest signal strength?
I live in an apartment where I get next to no sprint signal which drops calls like crazy, if I stand in certain spots in the building I can get it to roam which gives me 3 bars... and calls are clear and never drop... I assume the PRL has something to do with this?

With Sprint introducing 800Mhz 1xA for voice, PRLs can be used to search for that signal over 1900Mhz PCS. Also, it can be used to force roaming

Is this something that can be selected on demand similar to the wifi selections? I remember seeing somewhere on the phone to select a network, but it only has Auto and Sprint.
No, a PRL has to either be pushed/updated by the carrier via OTA or flashed by a user.

I second the Roam Control suggestion, have used it for a year and a half now on my Epic....I force into roaming every day in my home office at work. Even then the signal fluctuates some roaming Verizon, but its almost always crappy with Sprint while at work...our building sucks for cell penetration.

I called and complained about that very same thing and they offered me an Airave for free. Might be worth trying considering they can terminate your service if you roam too much.
http://support.sprint.com/support/device/Sprint/AIRAVE_by_Sprint-dvc1230001prd
Here's a zipped folder with some of Sprint's current LTE PRLs. The xx006 PRLs contain information pertaining to the future LTE developments that are rolling out. Below's the contents of what's in the zip and what they are, to my knowledge these are the ones that allow 3G roaming:
16006: LTE PRL (don't have much information on this one)
24006: CL LTE PRL (recommended)
54006: Advanced World Mode CL LTE PRL (CL and designed for international travel)
56006: LTE PRL (found on demo devices at the stores)
I'm not going to do a write up for how to flash PRLs or pull them from the Photon Q. Mostly because I'm lazy and can't be bothered, and there's plenty of well written tutorials floating around XDA as is.
QPST?
I tried to pull this guy up in QPST as soon as I got it to flash the 1119 PRL, but I wasn't able to get QPST to see the phone. Anyone else had this issue? Or resolve it?

Trying to get my PRL updated as well and QPST is not having any of it. I tried similar steps to the previous photon without success, anyone know what needs to be done here?
I have tried many different ways to get a custom PRL on this thing without success. I can get it into dev mode using ##3424# and then I also check developers mode in the Development menu and still can not do it. QPST just does not see it. One thing that does happen with the above steps is that windows tries to install drivers for various motorola stuff. QC interface and the like. I can not locate those drivers anywhere. Anyone?

The S3 is qualcomm from what I heard. Thought it was the same as the Evo Lte.
Hope it doesn't have those garbage Via licensed cdma chipset.
On another note, if you do load a different prl on this device, like 12124, let me know if LTE still works.

US GS3s are Qualcomm. We have a few of the newer QPST build links on our site.
We're able to push/pull from VIA chipsets as well. The Galaxy Nexus was fully flashed to Cricket and that involves more than just a PRL.
I came to this thread looking for a method of obtaining the MSL/SPC for the Photon Q. I am not a Sprint customer.

[Q] Looking to update PRL on Sprint...

Looking for a way to update my own PRL running on the Sprint network. I have my MSL and already enabled the other LTE bands so I know that functions correctly. Thanks!
I am wanting to do this as well. Dial codes work but i cant find the one to write the prl. On samsung TW roms its ##DATA## but that dosnt work here. I tied *#*#data#*#* and that shows some menus but none to wright the prl
Seems like I remember seeing that there is a SprintHiddenMenu.apk that ships with the phone. Do you see it in /system/app? Not sure if it will have a PRL update option, but might be worth a look. I'll be using mine on Sprint too, so I'd be interested to know what you find.

I wouldn't be surprised if sprint hasn't had enough of your 00001 prl flashing.
Anyone figure out how to do this? We need diag mode, diag driver and probably a new version of qpst.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Definitely still looking...I saw they figured out how to do it with the LG G2 so since this phone is loosely similar I imagine the process should be close. The G2 has to have a diag mode enabled...I really think the key is figuring what dialer code this actually is.
Looking forward to this too. LTE keeps breaking after 30 seconds or so, not that the speeds are any good in Chicago anyway. Can't wait to do some Verizon roaming. Being stuck on Sprint 3g is not ideal.
Yeah but the problem is the LG G2 does not have the same software. This phone isn't only built for Sprint so I have a feeling it will be more difficult.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
It is built for Sprint. That's why it works on Sprint. It's capable of running on every network short done lte stuff with Verizon. It won't run Verizon as a primary but does roam there. I'm sure there is a way just weather or not you will have to use cdma tool to do it.

Has there been any new info on this? My girl is almost about to activate her Nexus 5 (once the sim card arrives). But really need to be able to force roam or at least use 00001 prl.
Bumpity Bump. You guys figured anything out yet? Would love to use the corporate PRL for actual 3G roaming.
Bump :X
Hoping someone finds something soon. I always roam on Verizon at my house but my plan only lets me use 1x... Need dat 3G xD.

Problems getting 4G LTE on Sprint Network

Hi,
I got my Nexus 5 from a 3rd party Sprint Dealer, known as Wirefly.com -- Is anyone having problems accessing 4G LTE from Sprint? I am in the 100% best coverage zones according to Sprint.
I have done heaps of troubleshooting steps with Sprint, to no avail. They are blaming it on a faulty phone.
Anyone else having this issue?
Its been happening since I received the phone on Dec 4th.
Thank you

Yeah, I am on 4.4.2.
Wirefly is currently out of stock, otherwise they said they would replace it. I am going to keep checking back with them everyday to get a new one. Any suggestions in the mean time? Sprint tech support has been hit or miss. I have been told that there is tower problems from Baltimore to Southern Virginia, then another tech support agent tells me no problems at all!
I do not know what to believe anymore or what to do!

First, thank you for your replies. I am not too up to date with rooting and such, so I apologize for that in advance.
The most I can get is LTE with 1 bar. That has been when I am driving around.

If you are on 4.4.2 then you need to root and flash a different modem or wait for google to send out an update.
Since you are getting lte but with a weak signal this is most likely the problem of course coverage maps are very vague and it may be that you are just too far from the tower.

But I think I got it figured out - You are right it works in LTE - when i had 4G on screen i used the app you send me link for and that app shows LTE as network. So the bottom line is that 4G stands for LTE in stock rom and it is possible that Nexus has a stronger radio than One so in some areas i do not get LTE.

The radio performance seems the same for me as my N5, I'm living in NYC.
Do note that "LTE" on a Nexus 5 is displayed as"4G" on the OnePlus One. Ensure that your APN is on T-Mobile 4G LTE IPv6 (fast.t-mobile.com), for some reason when I started my phone it was on MetroPCS instead.

To OP: How old is your SIM card? Have you ever received LTE signal on a previous device? I receive LTE on TMobile 4G perfectly fine, I just wish the "4G" showed up as "LTE" as my Nexus 5 did. I guess I could personally go skin it to say LTE instead but its just cosmetics.
And I completely agree with unlocking the bootloader, even if OP doesn't have any intentions to rooting/flashing, at least do it now so when you do decide to do it then you will be able to back everything up without having your device get wiped.
Edit: OP also go into dialer and type in *#*#4636#*#* then go into phone information -> scroll down -> under set preferred network type: LTE/GSM auto (PRL).

I thought the same thing (coming from a Nexus 5). I was worried that the OnePlus One did not support LTE but it definitely does. For some reason Cyanogen did not include a separate LTE icon as what's found on the Nexus 5 and most other LTE capable phones.

For sure its weird how they didn't adopt "LTE" and used "4G" instead. You can always go and change it to "LTE" with some apk hacking. Pretty easy to do.

So does your phone get "4G" now? You can verify in Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Mobile network type -> should be LTE if the top right says "4G"
The best way to unlock/root is to NOT use a toolkit. Yeah a toolkit is easier, but honestly unlocking a bootloader is not hard and the skills you obtain by doing it yourself are important. You won't lose warranty, you can always relock it and use the bit mod and OnePlus will never know. Plus OnePlus encourages the whole custom rom scene since thats why they have a Development forum on their official forums.

I called AT&T to have the IMEI changed over to the OPO since I was on the Nexus5. CyanogenMod doesn't technically come with LTE icon, personally I can careless but it does look nice at top lol. And you're correct on my device under Mobile Network Type it shows LTE but icon on top shows 4G.
4G is LTE
H+ is HSPA+
3G is ... 3G
edge is edge :crying:
The first speed test in my sig is my LTE speeds using my OPO... Pretty typical, maybe a little faster than my old Galaxy Note 2. :good:
how does one change it to the LTE symbol?
I'm just curious. If you know 4G means LTE, whats the difference if it says LTE? Not trying to be an A-hole...just curious.
If you run the CM11 nightlies on the OnePlus One the phone will show LTE in an LTE area. Only the stock CM11S shows LTE as 4G.
I would think that people on xda are more well informed.
Carriers like to change the official terms to make you "buy" into a "technological" leap.
Most of the roms outside North America uses 4G (instead of LTE). This is all about marketing.
HSPA(+) are 3rd generation networks while LTE is the 4th generation.
back in the day:
iPhone = edge speed 2.75G
iPhone 3G = HSPA 3G (7.2) speed
iPhone 4 = HSPA+ 3.5G (carriers in north america tried really hard to change this to 4G)
iPhone 5 = LTE 4G
See this article (how At&t tried to play this game)
search on google as i m not able to post links yet.

I agree fully with Line 1 - especially here we should do more homework before posting...
my oneplus signal is terrible compared to my n5

mine is better then g2. Do note that your phone may or may not have the bands your provider has for lte. This you should have checked before you got the phone.
Also delete apn and reboot.
If it works better something went wrong there. If it doesnt check your providers website if setings are all correct.
If they are you might need a new sim/ or lte enabled via your provider.

Any method for using data while on call?? Is it even possible?

Im new to Sprint and found out this little bummer detail
Found this in the general section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3222940
Unsure myself if it works. Good luck

I use that method. Easy for me as I've always been using a Google Voice number. You would have to get a different numbet for Google Voice though.

I still have my Note 3 on Sprint and with that I can take a call and still use my data. Where as my Note 5 (also on Sprint) I can't do that. Not really seeing an answer as to why. Anybody have an idea?
Has to do with newer phones having one radio vs. the older phones having two. Googling "sprint data and voice at same time" has this as the first result. https://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/217875 Post two explains it. Probably not going to get simulaneous data and voice anytime in the near future unfortunately.
I found out the hard way with my note 4 i was shocked. Not sure why they don't let you do 3g or hspa over calls. I have sprint note 5 on metro pc and can surf the net on hspa while on a call with no problem.

I can use data while on a call. It is limited to 3G but it still works so that tells me the hardware is capable of doing both. I'm on n920p unlocked using on AT&T

That's because AT&T is using GSM. Different radio than CDMA Sprint uses. Note 5 must come with both but generally lock the GSM radio? That I'm not sure about. What I do know is older phones had two CDMA radios put in them (such as the S3 on Sprint). One dedicated to voice -- another dedicated to data. Therefore you could do voice and data. GSM has always been one radio because that one radio can do both tasks at the same time. They got around it on CDMA by simply adding another radio in there and dedicating each one to one task.
