Hi,
I got my Nexus 5 from a 3rd party Sprint Dealer, known as Wirefly.com -- Is anyone having problems accessing 4G LTE from Sprint? I am in the 100% best coverage zones according to Sprint.
I have done heaps of troubleshooting steps with Sprint, to no avail. They are blaming it on a faulty phone.
Anyone else having this issue?
Its been happening since I received the phone on Dec 4th.
Thank you
Are you rooted? What radios are you on?

Sprint here too, but no issues. Do you have a SIM card installed? It is required to access LTE on sprint.

Are you on 4.4.2? Cuz im on sprint and i had to roll back to the 4.4 radios. The 4.4.1 radios were horrible. I too got my phone from wirefly. You have a 14 day guarantee with them

Yeah, I am on 4.4.2.
Wirefly is currently out of stock, otherwise they said they would replace it. I am going to keep checking back with them everyday to get a new one. Any suggestions in the mean time? Sprint tech support has been hit or miss. I have been told that there is tower problems from Baltimore to Southern Virginia, then another tech support agent tells me no problems at all!
I do not know what to believe anymore or what to do!
Well i know i got perfect lte the first two weeks i had my phone, then almost three weeks without it, then now its back. I know its a sprint thing. Are you getting lte anywhere at all?

First, thank you for your replies. I am not too up to date with rooting and such, so I apologize for that in advance.
The most I can get is LTE with 1 bar. That has been when I am driving around.
I can see the tower from my Condo, and according to their coverage maps, I should be getting "LTE Best" at home and work.
Thank you again.

I switched from TMobile to Sprint (in-contract, so I had to pay to get out of TMobile) with the hopes of Sprint being better, but as of now, I have not seen that at all!
Im pretty sure it will get better when sprint rolls out spark (officially), and Google updates the radio again

Well I have every intention of still getting a new phone from Wirefly.
It was odd, did Wirefly send you the phone with the SIM (or whatever they call it ICCA?? card) inside of it already?
Any ETA on the rollout of that?
Yes the sim is already in your phone. And i don't blame you for wanting a new phone, best to rule out a bad phone

Thank you for your help! It is much appreciated!
If you are on 4.4.2 then you need to root and flash a different modem or wait for google to send out an update.
Since you are getting lte but with a weak signal this is most likely the problem of course coverage maps are very vague and it may be that you are just too far from the tower.

I can literally see the tower from my balcony at my condo.
Leary of doing anything to the phone because I am going to get a new one from Wirefly when they have them in stock.
Thanks for your input!

Yeah, I am only able to get 3G with 2-3 bars at a time. Like I said, if I drive around, I will barely get LTE, maybe 1 bar.
How good is the signal strength?
Anyone know of an ETA on when Google will push out a new update?

Pretty good. -91dBm from here in my bedroom. You can force lte via dialer codes such as "*#*#4636#*#*" but you will not be able to receive calls or texts.

Ahh.
They did heaps of dialer codes when I called tech support. I forget exactly which ones, but they made me do them several times.
Also, when going into Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Preferred Network Type > does anyone's else default to GLOBAL instead of LTE? I keep switching mine to LTE, but it shunts it back to Global randomly.... I can't figure out why...

Here it is. Get a unlock code and it works on Rogers network, with 3G.
Just remember to set APN first.
So it is confirmed that Verizon is not messing up the 850/1900 bands outside US.
Canadian Droid lovers, you are safe.
Btw, this phone seems to have some serious reception issues. It only shows one signal bar in my house, while other phones would get full. Hope moto could fix this via a software update.

Thanks for confirming this for us. We hear in the US are still having those problems with AT&T and T-Mobile. Hopefully we will find a workaround soon.
Thanks so much. Thats what I've been searching for. BTW, where did you get the phone? Can you just go to Verizon store and buy it outright without signing any contract, not even the month by month plan?
Got the phone from a friend in the US. What he did was activate a month to month plan, and cancel it right away.

The unlock code is so you can use non-Verizon (Vodafone) SIMs. Rooting is being able to have full read / write access to the entire phone. Rooting alone will not unlock the radio to use 3rd party SIMs.

Has anyone else noticed reception issues with this phone? I was waiting and waiting and waiting for the Milestone 2 originally and then this one came out and I want it sooooo bad. I need to upgrade from this HTC Magic but I don't want to buy a phone with hardware flaws.
I tried Googling it but all I'm finding is reception problems on the Droid 2 and the Droid X. Not a lot on the D2G but it seems like the entire Droid line has people reporting reception problems.
Is it just the number of bars showing thats a problem or do you also get frequent dropped calls?
I heard from a friend that Android 2.2 includes a new Battery Manager that reduces power to the radio when you're not making or receiving a call and that's probably why the number of bars showing is low when the phone is idle and there probably isn't really a reception problem unless calls are being dropped. Can anyone confirm this?
It's a long drive from where I am in Canada to the nearest Verizon store so I was going to make purchasing it part of a road trip to visit friends in Seattle in a couple weeks if I can get confirmation that the reception problem is not hardware related.
Any confirmations or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Reception hasn't really been an issue for me. Seems acceptable. Battery life marginal though but I had the same issue with an HTC Desire

The funny thing is, even though the phone is showing only one signal bar, I still have great call quality and 3g speed. Wired.

Thanks guys. That was the news I was hoping to hear.
I was having problems with the 3G in France. I never got more than one bar and that was in middle of Paris
Buy it on prepaid. Its $394 plus $104 of other stuff, total 537.

I just got the Droid 2 Global and have it unlocked on the Rogers network. I can't get the 3g to work. What APN settings are you using or how did you get it to work? I have input the apn settings that are being posted around the web but can't get 3g to work. Edge works however. Thanks for your help.

APN settings are same for 3G and EDGE. Are you sure you are not forcing EDGE somewhere in settings? Or maybe battery manager?
I figured out the problem. I had the phone in "gsm only" mode. When I switched back to"Global" mode in network settings I instantly got 3g and even "H". Thanks for the help anyway
I got my Nexus 5 yesterday and finally got it working. I live right next to a LTE tower and I can't seem to get LTE.
1. Checked PRL
2 Checked Sim
3 Checked Profile
4. Called sprint
5. Checked network settings.
When i put the phone in airplane mode, and back off. It jumps to LTE for 2 seconds then 3g
Anyone having these issues ???
*manual re-fresh*
*#*#72786#*#*
after that, phone will reboot and "re-fresh network"
Also, my phone wen't into global mode, which you will need to change that back to LTE mode.
- Still isn't fixed ...
will report back ..
Manual Programming Code
*#*#675#*#*
edit: MDN = phone number
MSID: split
UPDATE
doing *#*#4636#*#* and selecting LTE only does indeed make LTE work both visually and functionally, with a loss of voice of course, but as soon as you go back to LTE/CDMA auto it'll require a reboot to take effect and LTE is once again not working.
(from sprint forums) - confirmed

Here is how I fixed it for myself on Sprint.
Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Network Mode
Change Network Mode from Global to LTE.
It will still connect to Evdo, ehrpd and Lte and switches between them as needed.
Luckily I haven't got hit with 1x since trying this out. My area has maybe one or two spots where I'd get 1x instead of ehrpd.
Settings hold after a reboot. I was driving to work today with my phone playing my music and it seemlessly switched between 3g and lte on it's own.

Mine does that too.
BUT, nothing in the settings has been able to fix this.
How long since you activated? Mine would not connect to lte at all until last night... about 30 hours after activation.
Now it connects fine. I tried everything including flashing the modems posted in dev, swapping sims, trying every different network config and nothing worked except lte only mode which then kills 3g and voice.

I too am having the exact same problem as the OP. I can change the setting from Global to LTE and the phone will connect to LTE for a few seconds before switching back to 3g.
I am coming from the Note 3 on Sprint that got great LTE here at home, about 16mb down and 4mb up but I am hoping this gets resolved quick.
I'm on T-Mobile and it favors sticking on HSPA+ instead of LTE. If LTE gets down to one bar, the phone decides it's time to switch back. Compare this behavior to my Nexus 4 and it would stick on LTE come hell or high water. I would stay on LTE while in the office and this phone refuses to even get on LTE in the office. I don't get it.
Some have suggested this is a "power saving" feature, but I call BS on this because my Nexus 4 wasn't even intended to have its LTE radio used and LTE really didn't impact my battery. It felt like it lasted the same as it did before I enabled LTE on it.
Possible Sprint Fix
Customer: Is the SIM device specific? I reused the one from my Note 3. I have seen other information that the SIM's for the Nexus 5 are device specific.
Mitchell C.: Yes, you can get a SIM for the Nexus from a nearest Sprint store. I can fix an appointment for you.
Customer: so they are device specific?
Mitchell C.: Yes, they are.
Mitchell C.: We've come across a lot of these issues today.
Customer: SO just to be clear, I need to ask for a SIM for the Nexus 5?

Customer: that should correct my connectivity problem?

I hope they fix this soon! Maybe they gave me the wrong SIM? Idk
Doubtful Mitchell knows what he is talking about. People have used HTC One SIMS and GS4 sims and have LTE. But, today is the big day the Sprint phones go on sale. Will be interesting to see if any of those people have the issue.

Still stuck on 3G after activating around 72 hours ago.
To follow up on the Nexus 5's "special" SIM card. I'm also skeptical about this. I'm using a SIM from a GS4 (part #: SIMGLW206R) which is the same SIM mentioned in this post about activating the Nexus 5 on Sprint: http://qbking77.com/google-nexus-5/activate-nexus-5-sprint/.
However, I called a nearby Sprint store to ask if they had any SIM cards available. They said yes but when I mentioned the Nexus 5 the representative seemed to think there was some additional procedure for coupling the phone and the SIM. I don't know any more about this. Could be misinformation of course.

Are you getting excellent HSPA+ reception, but the phone isn't switching to LTE or connects to LTE, but jumps back to HSPA+?
Go to a T-Mobile store and tell them about your situation (don't chat with them online because that did not fix my situation). The rep that I spoke with called tech support and they did some sort of reset on my account. I also asked for a new SIM and was given that new ISIS SIM. As soon as my phone booted, it was on LTE and stayed on LTE. I was like you, thinking that my device was messed up, but T-Mobile fixed it.

We have the same issue with Nexus 5 with Tmobile in greater NYC metro area. When i tried with my old Samsung mobile there is no issue and it works fine. The problem, I can't make and receive any calls. Most of the callers told me, it goes to voice message after couple of rings. I didn't get even single ring and voice mail message. Frustrating Nexus 5.
My friend and I have the same problem too.
Both 16gb White
What colour of nexus 5 you guys have?
I see some have white, maybe white causes this issue??
Having the same issue as well. I have a 32gb white model and I randomly lose all bars when my friend calls me. It is very random and only happens a few times. Going to go and switch out the SIM from T-Mobile and have them reset my line and see if that fixes the problem.

32GB black with miserable cell reception here, so not a color issue.
Maybe an LTE issue? Might explain why our old devices got better reception, if they were using older gen signals/antennas? Not that we'd want to in the long term, can we disable the LTE services and live off the previous gen, at least to test?

Having the same issue as well. I have a 32gb white model and I randomly lose all bars when my friend calls me. It is very random and only happens a few times. Going to go and switch out the SIM from T-Mobile and have them reset my line and see if that fixes the problem.

I get lots of complete dead drop outs too, even on Wifi. One moment cruising along, the next I'm disconnected, the next I'm back on. Something is not right with this device.
Hmm I need to also find some time to visit a t-mobile store and check out why my reception just drops and gets spotty all of the sudden sometimes.
I have the 32gb white model. I never get LTE while two of my friends with Nexus 5 that were next to me both got LTE.
I also had my signal drop to 0 in a starbucks before, and I never had that happen with my previous Nexus 4, was frustrating since I couldn't get the promo code for my starbucks reward drink x.x
Ok guys Google is definitely on its game with replacing your your nexus 5 placed my RMA Sunday night got it today and I can report my new phone is working as it should I wouldn't say it gets as good a signal as my one did but a minimal difference that you would expect between two different devices so if your having an issue call up Google tell them you already spoke to T-Mobile about your service issues and they couldn't help you and that your certain its a device issue as a side note their RMA process has you basically buy a new device and send them the old one
Also I had a black 32gb so I don't think the color matters

After my research, When we switch back to 2G (GSM Only) option there is no issue with voice calls but the data speed is very slow as expected. It seems that there is an issue with T-mobile towers LTE/3G/4G for voice calls. Below is the problem with Sprint network, looks like same thing happening for Tmobile.
s4grudotcom - sprint lte connectivity issues due to circuit switched fallback technology.
If you need voice calls high priority like me, give a try to switch GSM only.it shows E network on signal bar.
I'm sitting at home nice good HSPA+ Signal then all of a sudden it just drops the EDGE
my other phone (iPhone is still on HSPA+ no issues) great so I toggle airplane mode on and off boom still edge, so I reboot and boom STILL EDGE
After a while it reconnect to HSPA+ or until it picks up LTE
Does this happen to you? It seems the radio got even crappier with 4.4.2
Im fully stock 100% I have 2 Nexus 5 units in hand one is from T-Mobile one is from play store both experience the same problem
Does anyone know if this is software or hardware Antenna or qFE1100 and does this happen to you?

Never had this issue. Tried reflashing the old radio back?
This should be in q&a by the way

no issues here as well.
Both nexus 4 and 5 suffer from signal drops.
LG and Samsung made devices in general have weaker antennas than Motorola/Apple for example.

Yes but it seems new or not they all have the issue I tested 5 of my friends with nexus 5's all of them report exact same issue
I also managed to catch my 2 units on video
Where i live i even have H+ indoors, couldn`t get that with a samsung or htc. So nothing wrong with the radio for me.

Why would i flash back to 4.4. The Point is google ffffed up somewhere and I hope this gains momentum as right now Google does not see it as an issue and is blaming it on the carrier.
I think I'm having the same issue, my data has been bad(between .5mbps-1mbps) since I got this phone. First I thought it was the APN settings, then I thought maybe the towers, right now I'm thinking I might be throttled by at&t. I call them one person says yes, call again another person says no, wtf!
I came from a galaxy s 3 with no build problems, just slow updates. Damn I guess there's no winning with Android.

Not the point at all. Either you want a solution or you want to blame. This isn't an issue for the 3 N5's I administer so it sounds like a localised problem.

Take your Nexus 5's to an area where you don't get HSPA+ for example your basement then take it out and bring it to an area with HSPA+
Let it sit and see if it will switch to HSPA+ if not toggle airplane mode on then off then see if it will switch.
About 3 out of 5 times when I make a call when I am originally on LTE the phone call drops. I am on AT&T and when I make a call it switches from LTE to H+ then all of a sudden it just completely drops signal and thus the call and about 3 seconds later regains signal. Does anyone know what may be causing this issue or has had this issue? I am on 4.4.4 Stock with Root.
Well dropping calls isn't normal, but dropping from LTE to H+ is. VoLTE isn't really a thing yet. Calls don't work over LTE, so when you make a call it automatically drops to H+. That's normal behavior.
Did this just start happening out of the blue? Or always done that? Make sure you have the correct APN settings. If so try calling your provider and see if there's anything they can do for you.

Sorry forget to mention I knew that was normal for the drop to H+, but yes the signal drop is not. Well it started out of the blue. IS there a thread on here with what should be the correct APN settings? Also my old nexus 5 started to do this before I returned it under warranty for refurbished, then I had a moto G lte for a month worked fine, got a refurbished (due to warranty) and started again.
Here is a graph of my network coverage to show that the signal just drops.

Mine doesn't seem to have any particular count pattern, it happens very randomly, usually when attempting to call someone and once they pickup on their end, my phone would hang up. This happens maybe 40-50%of the time, can't estimate a guess, but i can say that it happens enough to piss me off. I've checked my AT&T APN, which matches to what the carrier has it set, i even went and got my SIM replaced, rebooted in safe mode, gps works, so it's not a third party app causing this. Last resort is factory reset, although I'm almost positive that won't do anything. I'm currently also running android 4.4.4 stock aosp on a 32Gb N5. Device was purchased new in early may 2014, and came with android 4.4.2 preinstalled. The random call drops issue started in early October, a few months well into 4.4.4 update. All I've found online is that i it has something to do with a missing cellular radio, but to be honest, i don't want to mess with those as that may cause further problems. Called Google, and they act like they're clueless about this issue, all they can offer is a replacement, which is nice, but to be honest, it's probably going to happen again even with the new device. My coworker has the same issue with his 16gb N5 black model. If anyone with this device trying out android 5.0 lollipop preview can chime in on if this problem still persists, would be very awesome. I'm going to wait and see when the official android 5.0 comes out, if that fixes the dropped calls problem, then N5 can be used, if not then I'm getting it replaced and reselling it, may go with the moto x+1. So either a good portion of nexus 5 devices are factory defects or this really is a cellular radio problem. Really hope that lollipop will fix this issue.
The APN only handles packet data and not voice so that shouldn't be the issue.
I would try setting your phone to 3G only for a while and see if the drops still occur when you are on 3G prior to the call.

Yea it wasn't an exact count but like 3 out of 5 says, enough that is annoys me. Tried all those as well and like I said I have a moto g lte that the sim worked in so it isn't the sim. This is my refurb unit, but the other one I have since November started to do the same thing in August as well on 4.4.4 never had an issue before that. Where did you find that if you don't mind me asking? I am comfy enough to mess with that stuff, so i'll give it a shot.

I found it here (just take away the spaces after .com and after 02/): ianmarmour.com /2014/02/02/ google-nexus-5-fixing-modemcellular-issues-on-34g-networks
It's an older post from February, but seems to have the best details and fixes. If you simply search nexus 5 cellular radio issues or nexus 5 4.4.4 call drops, you should find a lot of these recalls from lots of N5 users. I'm tempted to try it, but don't really feel like sorting all my files in case i brick my device. I'm also not sure if ota update will work if i tinker with cell radios. Otherwise that's the page containing all the details you'd need including links and step by step guides. And hey if it works for you, let me know, maybe I'll try it out if it goes well for you.

Exactly, i know that's totally possible, but i wouldn't want a smartphone that has no lte and/or hspa+ service at this point in time. This seems to happen wherever lte isn't as strong or available but hspa+ is. I think the modem responsible for switching between lte and hspa+ causes calls to drop. I took note of it a couple hours ago when i attempted to make a few phone calls resulting in instant call drops. Seems to do it while switching from lte to hspa+ network. I just wish Google would stop burying their heads from the outside world like an ostrich, and get in top of this. I mean this is their flagship device until N6 goes on sale. They should seriously fix this issue or at least stop denying that they've never heard of any complaints with their N4 and N5 customers. I love this device, but a simple fix like this not being addressed by Google is not very professional, especially because it's primary function is to call people. I'm really tempted to flash those radios, but really want to see if Google addresses this issue with an official ota lollipop update.

part of the price? no. you dont see any phone more expensive because it can handle lte. your issue is with your network, and its signals around you. as we all know that the lte available can not handle voice calls. your isdue involvez lte handing off to H or 3G. thats where your network comes in.

lol, ok. the moto g variants are an exception to the majority. their already cheap price point being the reason.
those are two different devices, with differing hardware. its possible that moto can catch the signal from a little further away than the n5 can. the n5 was made less expensive because they used less expensive hardware in places. a shorter antenna being one of those places.

anyways, if you bought it from google, you can request an exchange.
I wouldn't try any hardware mod, etc as the issue is with the software. This kind of thing happens to me also, regardless of where I am or what network I'm on (tested this with a friends AT&T sim also). In the settings menu my signal strength just says "0" (kid you not ZERO) and sticks there until I manually set the phone to 3g when I go to a place with weak LTE (like a basement).
DISCLAIMER: I am only assuming this as I don't know that much about this topic, but I think stock 4.4.4 doesn't understand that LTE can still be received at worse than -115dbm and causes this fault. It doesn't matter which radio you flash (using the newest dev preview radio on 4.4.4 still has this issue, but on 5.0 it works flawlessly), what network you are on, where you are with strong LTE coverage... If you go to the wrong LTE dead spot you have this issue. It's as if the radio is saying "I'm still good on LTE" and the phone says "-115dbm isn't good we need to switch" and the radio says "I'm still connected to LTE though" and the conflict causes the signal to go to 0. I don't think it's got anything to do with the handoff from LTE to 3G either (but it might, as I said I'm no expert). -115dbm seems to be the doom number for me on LTE with 4.4.4.
Try flashing the new dev preview if you want LTE. No network = 0 bug. Hell I can even get LTE in my basement (at worse than -115dbm, of course). I had to flash back to 4.4.4 though, too many games/apps not updated yet.
Long story short, this is fixed in Lollipop. Less than two weeks...
