[Q] USB OTG won't mount or unmount, but still able to read - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, just got a Unitek Micro SD Card Reader (SN:131000001778) with a 32gb micro sd card. I hooked it up using Stickmount, I can access the memory card, but when I go to unmount it, nothing happens and when I pull the reader, I get "USB storage unexpectedly removed". I uninstalled Stickmount and loaded USB OTG Helper, when I hook up the reader and hit mount I get-
"Mount started at: /storage/UsbOtgDrives"
"No drives mounted! (code 9)"
When pressing unmount, I get-
"No drives found to unmount!' Of course.
Is there any way to get it to mount or unmount, and am I possibly looking at data corruption if I'm unable to get the drive to mount or unmount when inserting or unplugging it?

Solved: Kinda
Guess I have to use Settings/Storage to mount and unmount usb storage. Still doesn't explain why Stickmount and USB OTG Helper do not work. Is it an Android 4.x limitation?

Stickmount works just fine with my Meenova... not sure why it wouldn't work unless that OTG is not compatible...

Not sure why, I just got done using it and unmount through settings works perfectly. I just uninstalled USB Otg Helper and it still unmounts fine. I'm not gonna worry about it unless my data starts getting corrupted which it shouldn't now or I use a rom or kernel that doesn't have USB Otg built in which would be a rarity now a days.

I tried that but no result.
thx
It should be listed as usbdrive using your favorite file manager. Usually under
...
...
sdcard
sdcard2
usbdrive
Its not like windows. It doesn't pop up with a window when you plug it in. Flash drive must be formatted fat32. Android doesn't like ntfs

I do see the USB drive bit it's always empty. USB drive is fat32 formatted.
Using a USB mouse works great. I don't get a popup which notifies me about a connected usb drive like my archos 101 did.
Did a little discovery:
When connecting the tab to pc with a usb cable only then a "mount usb" message pops up.
Then a usb drive will work.
Now how do i get the gtab to mount the usb drive ?
I don't think any of these roms are gonna give you a popup when you load a usb drive. I just plugged one in on tnt 3.1 and it reads it thru file manager. I was on vegan beta4 and did the same thing yesterday
Edit: usb disk not usb drive
When you connect a cable from your pc to the tablet the pop up is to allow the tab to unmount the internal sdcard so your pc can read it.

I do not understand...what is location of the usb files then ?
Open iFileManager and hit the icon that looks like a house. Scroll down and you will find a folder named usbdisk. That is your usb drive. Open the folder. I'm assuming the usb drive is plugged in

/usbdrive is empty.
It becomes populates when i insert a mini usb cable and connect it to the pc.
This give me the mount option and only then i see files under /usbdrive.
idk then, I never had a problem reading the usb drive on vegan beta4. Sorry I can't help
OK, found it.
I have to unmount the sdcard first. Then the usb drive shows with files.
Thanks.
Cool....You may wanna drop a note in the vegan thread on what you did. Maybe others have had the same issue.

Hey. I just got a USB Flash Drive and tried connecting it to my GTab but no dice. I am running Vegan 5.1 and using ES File Explore. I navigate to the root directory and see sdcard, sdcard2, and usbdisk. Sdcard and sdcard2 has my internal storage and my micro usb storage files respectively. But nothing pops us in usbdisk. I tried removing the microsd, rebooting with the USB inserted, and unmounting the microSD but no dice.
Any hints?
Thanks,
Scott
Update: So I tried going to settings and unmounting the sdcard and now I can see the USBdisk. Odd. If I want to transfer data from one drive to another, I cant accomplish that because the SDcard is unmounted. Also all my appdata and stuff are not present. Any way to have both of these drives mounted at the same time?
Thanks

USB Host a 2TB Hard Drive (NTFS)

Is this possible? I have been reading forums and only catch things here and there
about it but nothing confirming it. I have rooted my xoom and installed the
1.4ghz OC kernel. I have the OTG cable and when I connect it to my xoom with
my hard drive I don't see anything happen. I would appreciate if someone could
confirm if this works or not and point me in the right direction as to how to set it
up.
Thanks in advance
i got my USB OTG usb stick working today, thx to @bigrushdog will try a 1tb hard disk toda.
meanwhile, read this:

Having exact same issue, can mount the powered drive via usb no problem, but usb sticks - no luck
im having no luck
tiamat 1.4.4
3.1
Running NTFS Mount, selecting sda1 to mount and it says:
Attempting to mount
Mount failed...
I am trying on a 2GB NTFS Formatted USB Stick.
I am only testing as I gave my 500gb NTFS External to a friend for the weekend and wasnt having any luck with that either although I havent tested it out with NTFS Mount.
Is there anything else I should be doing?
In 1.4.4. I was able to mount my 160gb NTFS drive, however it would NOT stay mounted...
I've switched back to 1.4.3. Testing now and it seems to be fine...
After 10 minutes it also unmounted itself...This is an older drive, not sure if its going bad, but it wasnt doing this before 1.4.4
Edit: if I unplug and remount it remounts fine...weird!
Edit2: USB Sticks and memory cards work just fine
Using the Motorola Camera Connection kit (their OTG cable):
No problem mounting a USB Stick at 16 GB formatted as FAT32 or EXT2
Recognizes the same stick and tried to mount if NTFS, but then "freaks" out (NTFS Mount can't actually mount it as NTFS, and File System gets confused) and is unable to read write.
Does not recognize either of my "self powered" USB external drives (1TB and 4TB) - no /dev/sda or /dev/sda1 appears in /dev/block unlike with the USB Stick.
This is with the Tiamat 3.1 and Kernel 1.4.4.
I heard 2TB harddrives work as well.
I don't have any proof though.
although USB is a preferred power method and a constant output of 5V (around about there)
Sometimes, the xoom is not powerful enough to power self powered hard drives, but if they come with a PSU then youll be fine.
As for Usb Sticks, thats beyond me however i think they may suffer from the same issue.
Remember, the Xoom is battery only and is not designed to be a USB power pocket unlike say, the transformer.

I can verify that my self-powered ntfs 750GB HDD works fine on HC3.2 with the Tiamat Rom 2.0 Manta Ray, when I use the free USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG app. This app also works for my 16GB FAT32 thumb drive.

sdcard visible only via cwm "mount usb storage"

Sorry for the title but I didnt know how could I describe it more precisely.
Problem is. I rooted gf`s htc explorer and I didnt have sd adapter so I tried to format micro sd via minitool partition wizard while it was inside phone connected via usb to pc.
After that I lost possibility to change usb mode from charging to file transfer since my card doesnt show up on pc/mobile/cwm anymore. EXCEPT "mount usb storage" in cwm. With that I see the card in pc, I can reformat it or transfer files. But I cant use it its not visible at all..only in that cwm mount usb storage.
I was browsing web/xda for like 2 hours and im quite desperate.
Any help how to make it visible again?
Its only unlocked-rooted-stock..was preparing it for link2sd.
thank a lot for a help

otg usb write access

OK, I've been able to connect my USB drive to my phone and view movies and files, but today I wanted to write to it and it says permission not supported. I use stickmount and ntfs mounter to mount and have tried es file explorer and astro. Neither will let me transfer files to USB... I have had the sdfix installed forever now, and I can write to my SD card, but just won't let me write to USB through org cable... Any help?
The only USB drives I've been able to use OTG with the M8 are flash drives (which don't require external power). Are you using something that needs power?
I've used powered and an unpowered western digital my passport 2tb harddrives and been able to watch movies off them even in ntfs format, but my ntfs USB flash drive will only read, no write at all... I'm going to try formatting it back to fat 32 and see if I can write to it when I get home. I thought i wrote to it before, but i recently formatted it to ntfs to put a movie on it... I'll post back tomorrow.

[Q] Mi 4i USB OTG Not Working

Hi,
I am extremely sorry if this is not the right place to ask this.
I got my Mi4i on the first flash. As soon as I got the phone, I did the MIUI 6.5.3.0 (LXIMICD) update. I did not check the USB OTG before the update, so not sure if it worked before the update or not. When I tried USB OTG, the Mount USB storage option is greyed out - always. I tried 2 different USBs and 2 different cables - still no luck. I am starting to suspect if its something wrong with this ROM release, as lots of areas in the setting is greyed out for me (for example, in the Headphones and Audio effects settings, the equalizer settings are always greyed out). So, have any of you tried USB OTG on MIUI 6.5.3.0? Any insights?
Yes I can assure u that USB OTG is working fine on MIUI 6.5.3.0
Check if the USB is a fat32 or ntfs?
Ntfs file system doesn't work with mi4i
Format the pen drive in fat32 and try again
I also tired a sd card reader it works brilliantly
Audio settings will be greyed out until u plugin headphones. Try any earphones or headphones then check if it still is greyed out

Thank you for the reply but I am still facing the issue...
Yes, the file system is Fat32 and the mi4i is still not recognizing the USB. Since the USB OTG is working fine for you, I suspect my OTG cable might be damaged ( weird- I tried 2 different cables).. Maybe I should try a different OTG pen drive?
PS: You were right about the audio settings, those worked when I plugged in the headphone..
same problem here.keyboard and mouse working but no usb drive with same otg cable. Otg card reader also not working.

If you're USB or SD Card is of huge capacity it may take time to load so I would suggest you to wait for a while, Android checks if the storage has an errors. It doesnt show in MIUI though. But wait for a while after plugging in.

I have sandisk otg 64gb and it works without an issue. Make sure it is formatted with FAT. Other FS like exFAT and NTFS wont work, not sure about Fat32 though.
Hope this helps.
I bought a new 16gb Sandisk 3.0 OTG usb and its working fine for me now.
What's working:
* FAT formatted USB flash drives

What's not working:
* NTFS formatted USB flash drives
* Portable USB hard drive
* USB Gamepad
I have an OTG cable lying around. Will soon test Linux file systems (ext2, ext3, etc.). Give me more suggestions, and i'll test it on the Mi 4i.

Aren't there root apps which enable ntfs support by installing a ntfs-3g driver?
The functionality is kernel-baked and not all kernels support the ntfs-3g driver. Also Xiaomi seems reluctant to release its sources anytime soon. There are alternatives like Stickmount however.
