[Q] google play music question - General Questions and Answers

Hello!
I have a question relating google's music app.
It says that you have an option to save music on the SD card on kit kat, and i have kit kat on my phone (unofficial cm11, the phone is samsung galaxy ace plus). However said option doesn't show up in the app's menu, so i have to use an xposed module to save music on my sd card.
While it normally wouldn't bother me, having xposed framework means i can't use ART, and i would like to try it out on my ancient phone. Also having a "native" way to do things is preferable to using a 3rd party app.
So my question is: how can i make it show the option to save music to SD card? Anyone else having kitkat but the option doesn't show up?

I feel bad for bumping, but i cannot find anyone with my issue and i would really like to find an answer to it

[Q] Developed app runs on tablet but not phones

So i wrote a quick small app, a media player, real basic. It scans the internal and external storage for mp3s and you can click on an artist, then click an album, then click a track and then it plays. I was able to run the app in two different emulators, and then i was able to install and run it on my Huawei s7 tablet. I then gave a copy to my two friends to load onto their phones, but they won't play on the phones. One has a motorola droid and the other has a nexus 1. They install my app using 'apk installer' (downloaded from the market), and it seems to install fine, but it has to force close when they try to run it. The option on the phones to install non market apps is enabled. I am at a lose as to why it won't run on the phones but it will run on my tablet and emulators. My app needs to permission to the wake lock, i don't know if that has anything to do with it. My tablet does have z4root on it, but i only do temporary root sometimes. I hoping that the phones don't need to be rooted to run my app.
Anyone have any ideas or things for me to investigate to figure this out? I would appreciate any clues.

[Q] Play Music cache to SD card? Works on my S4

I have a Note 10.1 (2012) and a Verizon Galaxy S4. I have the Play Music app on both and in Settings, both have the exact same version string - "v5.3.1317M.940995"
On my phone, in the Downloading section of the Settings, there is an option labeled "Storage location" and it lets me choose "59.5 GB External", which is my 64GB microSD card. I also have a 64 gig microSD in my Note 10.1. But, in the Play Music Settings, there is no setting listed for "Storage location".
That seems really odd when both apps claim to be the exact same version.
Can anybody tell me why the Note version isn't letting me download music to my SD, instead of internal? Is it because my S4 is on Android 4.3, but my Note is still 4.2?
I saw where somebody explained how to use a symlink to redirect the Play Music cache folder to the microSD. Is there a better/easier way to do it?
I checked and my Note is Android 4.1.2, not 4.2.
Also, looking at some tracks that I added via the Music Manager on my PC, when I see them on my Note, I don't see option to pin them to my device so I can be assured they get downloaded and are available for offline listening.
Does this have anything to do with being rooted? Even though I have used RootKeeper to temp unroot it?
It has nothing to do with being rooted. The almighty Google has deemed the feature to be in "beta" and only shows the option on certain devices. An alternative for the Note 10.1 is to install the Xposed (since your already rooted) framework and use the Music2SD module.
airesch, thanks for the info. I reckon that explains it. And I guess it's good as I can hope that it will come out of beta soon and show on my Note.
In the meantime, I that, since I'm rooted, I can make a folder on my SD card and use some utility (or probably do it from the command line) to create a symlink to my music folder, under the Play Music folder where it keeps its cache folder. Then delete the cache folder and rename the symlink to cache.
That sounds like it should work. Do you see any problem with doing that?

I think I have heard of other people having some success doing that. At the very least, I don't know of any definite problems with going that route. Personally, I find using Xposed is easier.
I did some searching on here for Xposed and couldn't find a thread on it. And I don't know what it actually is. Got any pointers for me?
Never mind. I find Xposed. I was only searching before in the Note 10.1 forum. My bad...
airesch: Thanks again for the tip on Xposed. The Music2SD module is not working for me, but the RootCloak module, which I found for it, is letting me use my DirecTV Genie GO app without having to do a temp unroot on my tablet, which is great!
I wish Music2SD worked for me, though. It opens and shows my storage location as Internal Storage. And it won't let me change it to anything else. When I tap it to change it, it just flashes and stays as "Internal Storage". I posted in the thread for the Music2SD module to see if somebody there can get me sorted out.
My tablet is rooted, but still on the stock TW ROM. The Music2SD app only mentions it working for the Note 10.1 with CM, so I was not exactly shocked when I tried it and it did not work. :-\
Odd, I am not stock, but still on a TW rom (Hyperdrive) and it works. Sorry, figured it would work on stock as well. My bad. Hopefully symlinking it works out. Glad you found another use for Xposed.

It's weird. About 10 minutes after I gave up on it and just set my tablet down on my desk, all of a sudden it popped up a SuperSU dialog asking for permission for root for Music2SD. I clicked Grant and then it, basically, seemed to work. At least, it let me choose External Storage.
But then I went into Google Music Player and pinned a song from my own collection. I got a notification that my music download was complete.
I turned off WiFi on my tablet, then went back into GMP and started the song playing. That worked, so I knew it was now local.
But then I went into Astro File Manager to verify where it was stored. I looked in Android/data/com.google.android.music/cache on both the internal storage and the SD card and both were empty!
Then I did a Restart on my tablet, still with WiFi off. When it came back up, I tried to play the same song and it said an Internet connection was required.
So, the real answer is that Music2SD seems totally flaky on my tablet.

[Q] Apps for S4

Hello All,
I am new to forum. Also new to smart phone world. Earlier I used Iphone 4S. I have two questions as for now:-
1.) Weather application in Iphone was wonderfull but in S4 is useless. Can I uninstall this one which come along with S4 and if that application (Iphone ) is available for android/S4
2.) Is there any good camera application in which date and time get prints on pictures shot ( as in point and shoot camera or SLRs)
3.) Can I install application directly to SD Card so that phone memory remains free.
4.) And Lastly do I really need a antivirus to install on my phone, if yes than which do you suggest.
Thanks All
Answer
1) Yes- if your phone is rooted: you can use any app manager application from the GMarket to do so. If your phone is
is not rooted, you can only turn it off: settings->More->Application Manager->All->find the accuwether app, demon and widget->turn off
(i personally use "eye in the sky"- no complaints
2) Perhaps UCam ot APD TimeStam... i think that 4.3 camera app already has this as feature, but dont count on it
3) I dont know if you can install it directly, but u can move some of then (or all with rooted phone) after install in
'Application Manager' (showed in part 1) -> move to SD card
4) Android is pretty secured OS, so I would not recommend it (studies show that most antivirus apps are not very effective either)
but if you are planning to install external apps (not from Google Play store) and want to be 100% sure, i would recommend
AVG antivirus (lighter) or Avast (heavier, but considered more secured)

[Q] Does phone need to be rooted for this reason?

I like to tinker with wearables like Pebbles,Sony Smartwatches, Android Wear Watches, Meta Watch, etc. I have purchased about 8 of these and have managed write apps to talk to the Pebbles via WP8 and Windows 7.
I have a Nexus 7 Kit Kat 4.4 tablet and have been able to download the official companion apps for some of the devices. Google Play will not let me download some of the APKs because they require a phone and a tablet isn't supported even though it usually works.
So what I would like to do is purchase a low cost, contract free, Android phone that has at least Kit Kat 4.4 on it and download the wearable companion app on it. Then use the Air Droid app to pull the companions wearable APK off the phone to the Nexus tablet.
The question is would I have to root the Android phone to be able to use Air Droid to pull a copy of th APK?

Google has blocked write access to the external SD card on Android 4.4. If you want to move files to the external SD card on Kit Kat, the phone has to be rooted. If you just want to copy files from it, this is supported.

That's not really true. Applications are not blocked from writing to the external SD card, they are just restricted to their own folder on the SD card. That said, it really has nothing to do with this topic since the OP did not mention using an SD card at all.
To answer your question, there are many applications that can backup APKs without using root like Astro, ES File Explorer, etc... I believe Airdroid is capable of doing so, but even if it's not there are other options. You could also definitely use Airdroid to get the APK off the device and onto your tablet once it is extracted using another application. Now, I can't answer the question of "will you be able to use the applications once you transfer them to your tablet?"

Thank you! That answers my question perfectly.

[Q] Music and custom Ringtones/Alarm are not showing anymore

Howdy,
I'm sorry to bother, but after searching with many different combinations of words on Google I did not find anything, and posting on Nexus 5 subreddit did not offer me any answer :/ That's why I try here
So basically, for no reason (no update, no restart of the device), my Nexus 5 does not show my music in Google Play Music, and my Ringtones/Alarms/Notifications that I customized do not work too (and they do no show in the list when I try to apply parameters).
No file has disappeared:
- Music is in Nexus5 > Internatl Storage > Music
- The rest of the stuff is still in Nexus 5 > Internal Storage > Ringtones, or Alarms.
Everything is here right at its place. But nothing works as before. I tried to restart the device, but no. I tried to empy cache/clear data/force stop of Google Play Music, but no. I did the same with the Media Storage app, and it did not wrok too. I got all the files out and back with other names, but no. I'm clueless.
Moreover, since I forced stop of Google Music and relaunched it, now my library is polluted my dozens of songs and albums that I suppose are automatically put here as a "try it" thing, but I don't want them appearing at all, even more in my small library (okay, right now, nothing would appear I know).
Would you be so kind to help me in this matter? I would greatly appreciate it.
Best regards,
Hmm new piece of information!
I did not realized earlier, for my custom wallpaper stayed the same, however when I tried to put a new one, if was impossible for me to wander in the different folders I once created to put pictures (using the USB cable and all). So the custom wallpaper stayed probably because it was in cache or something. But technically, it seems like in addition to the music and ringtones it's impossible to access other media folders...
I took half an hour to explore parameters and apps without finding the needle I was looking for :/
