I'm so dissapointed in andriod - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys I have im extremely dissapointed in android. And to lesser extend the devs. No offense to anyone but I just had to rant here.
Being a longtime iPhone user I finally found a nice phone that will take me away from iPhone, the nexus 5.
To my absolute shock, there's no CNAP support on these devices. Name display of a number that's not stored in your phone book. Herein Canada rogers and Fido offer this service, which I m subscribed to.
Being a business user its a must have for me. And seeing as how old 10 year old phones support this, I'm absolutely floored android doesn't. The closest thing is if you miss a call you'll see the name but as soon as you click call log it goes back to number
A user last year (on xda) found the fix and posted a patch with website but links are down. No one else, no Dev has fixed it. Its supposedly a really simple fix modding build file or patching frameworks I'm not sure. But I've tried everything. I've flashed 20 different Roms and nothing. A cm9 nightly had it but no longer is it enabled in the newer stuff.
I give up. I'm switching back to iPhone and never looking back. No CNAP on android devices is INSANE, not to mention the lack of a properly integrated visual voicemail. As far as I'm concerned android still a step behind.

Cool story bro

nice to see you go, dont let the door hit you on your way out

Your opinion is your own just as mine is. I find Iphones in general not my cup of tea. I find them bland, boring and way too small. The only thing I think they have going for them is the build materials but aside from that I don't think I could ever classify an iPhone on the same level.
If I were to buy an iPhone it would be used and would be permanently an iPod at my workplace and that's what I think they should be.
By the way I have had an iPhone 3g and iPhone 4s and I won't be going back.

I agree 100% they are small and visually very boring. Thats why i want to jump ship. However when this was an issue for iPhone in 4s it was fixed and was never an issue again.
And for those taking offense sorry to irritate you but my phone is first a phone if basic call features work, then you have issues.

"There's an app for that!"

And how do you think *****ing about it on a forum full of android fans is going to help you? This is a developers forum, not a complaint box.

You're missing the point. Phone is on kijiji already. I dont need help anymore. If it cant be fixed in 3 yesrs it wont be. But for a closed minded android users that defend defend defend. Guess what iPhone is better. And next release when the phone is at 5" and they implement solar charging it will be no contest... Again!
Funny how only response to this issue in two weeks is when I say iPhone has it enabled for years.
Haha enjoy mediocrity!

FYI nexus 5 from sprint has an add-on service for this exact thing. So I think it's more of the carriers stopping this rather than the device lacking the ability.
I might be wrong but who knows. Also what android phone were you using?

Iphone ahead of Android, news to me. I thought that the only OS, that can wake you up and tell you exactly how long to work is ahead of every other. Man you cant even put constant changing weather on your home screen. Emulation on iphone is a joke. No nfc, they just got LTE. Iphone 5s has the same dpi as the iphone 4. Everyone know that the notifications are a thousand times better on Android. I have never had a issue with peoples names not showing during a call, im confused because sync is vetter on Android also?

For someone who's is mocking close minded android users you seem pretty choose minded. iOs is fine and for a lot of users and is what they should stick with. For others it's not for them. We each have a personal choice.

It's your own fault for not doing your research, OP.
This thread is pointless and you should be banned.

You won't be missed. Not because I hate Apple, I have a mac, but because you have no idea what you're talking about. You can't even spell "Android" right. You said "Andriod". So you're right....Andriod sucks, but Android doesn't.

Iphone 5s still has alot of battery issues also

Sorry guys. Iphone 4 > Captivate

I just bought my wife an iPhone 4 (she previously had the 3G then 3GS). I gotta say the iPhone 4 is definitely much better than Captivate even before jailbreak. Dont get me wrong, I love the Captivate. Its my first Android phone. The iPhone 4 battery life is insane. Screen is SHARP. And you know what else? The iPhone apps have much better quality. I can download 2 of the same apps made for each OS by the same developer and the iOS one almost always have a better quality.
I love the fact that the Captivate is not made by Apple. Android is definitely a true iOS contender. But is it better? No. It will probably get there though.

Obvious troll is obvious
Have you tried both phone? Care to explain why you think im a troll?
Because you're on XDA on the Captivate forums creating a new thread just to say how much better another phone is than the Captivate?
I have both the iPhone 4 and the Captivate and find myself using the Captivate much more often than the iPhone. The iPhone is fine for people who are tech illiterate, much like how Macs are fine for people who can't take care of a normal PC.
I don't even understand why people keep bringing up a iPhone v. some Android phone debate. You like red and I like blue. Both are great phones, but coming into a place specifically for Winmo/Android devices to preach about an iPhone is pointless. There should a a filter on new threads that prevents anything with iPhone in the title or body (good or bad) from being created. It's getting old.
when will people realize WE DONT CARE if the iphone is better....i would be willing to be 95 percent of the people on the captivate section has used an iphone 4. We are still here...if we wanted an iphone (or wanted to read about it) we would have gone elsewhere.
THAT is why you are a troll. have a great day
The iPhone is a joke.
Moving on.

Captivate is an AT&T phone....majority of smartphone users who moved to a Captivate did so from an iphone after the contract ended.
Everybody is entitled to their favorites and thats a good thing. However, its almost meaningless to go into the captivate thread and say:
"Hey guys, i hate iphone, i bought android, but now i realize i actually prefer iphone"...... people will bag you out, call you a troll etc as no one wants to be told, sorry, you bought a ticket on the wrong train.
Its your view if you dont like apple but admire their well-thought out system/structure but things on android dont change overnight.
Its oft discussed how android apps still feel like beta, but give it time and like you said, it'll balance out. Just have a look at the change from android 1.6 to 2.2
I suspect these two things (below) may change the situation as well:

I admit the iPhone is easier - it is made so simple that anyone can use it - that is some of its appeal. If the designer only gives one way to access an app or do something then there is no confusion. Simplicity equals success.
Other then it being designed for the average person, i see little in your explanation to make it superior. The screen is higher density, but i prefer the deeper blacks of the AMOLED. The battery life is better in some tests and worse in others (Captivate did better in rated talk time, iPhone worse). Go to apple's forums and there are just as many people complaining about bad battery life as good - it all goes back to which apps are sucking down juice and the the iPhone has plenty of offenders.
As for app quality; the iPhone app world is more mature so there are more games; but of the 20 apps I use, they all look identical on my iPhone 3G as they do on my Android. BTW, where are all the widgets for the iPhone?
Everyone has different tastes - the iPhone is a fine for people that want it, but consider this:
1. iPhone 4 has a serious design flaw with the antenna - Apple made the decision to embrace form over function. Even Consumer Reports gave it a "do not buy rating" and they loved all past iPhones.
2. For enhanced functionality you must jailbreak - and then you are months behind OS updates waiting on developer updates
3. Re-jailbreaking every few months gets old fast
4. You are locked into the apple model. iTunes is required, no using drives as mass storage, limited to syncing with one PC/Mac, etc.
The iPhone is different, but I would not say it is better. It is made for the simple minded and it does that well.
Iphone 4 > Captivate FOR NOOBS!
Just be careful with that iphone screen... It scratches as easily as the droid incredible.

"I are has iPhone 4G and it are better than phone than all other has. I have posting onto android forum to prove I are know bester phone than are all you. You has impressed."
I have both.
Captivate is superior, in my opinion... iPhone4 is just more user friendly.
A Honda Civic is more user-friendly than a Leerjet... that doesn't make the Civic better.
I do believe that each phone has it's userbase, like a previous post, the iPhone are for people who like to be told how and what to do with their device. If you want to do any customization, good luck. You want to develop for the phone? You need to shell out cash for a Mac, if you don't already have one.
The Android platform is much more open, sure you have to root/sideload to accomplish things but most carriers lock phones just because they want to avoid any piracy problems. The phone is very customizable and open source, the SDK is free and multiplatform, meaning you can write apps on Windows, OSX and even Linux. So yeah.. before touting how great the iPhone is just because of the bigger screen and the thousands of fart apps you can download from the app store, you might want to do some research.
It must be troll season, everyone get a license. Is there a limit on trolls?
You will find an equal amount of people that say the iPhone is better, compared to the amount that says android is better. Its a preference.
Its obvious both are successful, and both have an audience.
The phone OS scene isn't crowded, there's room for more. Webos has potential, BB may get with the program eventually, and windows phone looks to be the next big thing.
I'm glad you're happy with your iPhone, I couldn't be happier since I put mine down.
How many "Captivates suck" posts does the Captivate forum need?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Speaking as a former Mac Genius at the Fort Worth Apple Store, I can tell you unequivocally that the iPhone has multiple issues. It's not just the 4 with it's known antenna and proximity sensor issues.
Just LOL at fail troll. LOL.
I have had every iPhone version... 8GB, 3G, 3GS, and 4. I returned the 4 because I don't think a free s****y case is a fix for a device that is defective and costs me over 1400 dollars. (subsidized purchase price+ two year contract) Fix the device. That is what set me over the edge.
And I couldn't be happier. I have yet to drop a single call with my Captivate. Every 3G based iPhone I have has dropped calls, usually in the same places. Like my house. The Captivate does not. Even with all the different ROM's and kernels I have loaded on it, it is still trucking along like a champ.
I got my iPhone 3G replaced 4 times in one year. 3GS 6 times. The 4 I had from launch day til late July. I'm still on the original Captivate.
I wouldn't go back.

Wow look at all the nerd rage lol. Im new to this General forum and Ive seen several iPHone VS Android threads so I thought it was okay to discuss about the iPhone here too. All I see is people attacking the iPhone because they have some personal problem with Steve Jobs or AT&T. I kinda expected nerd rage but damn I tried so hard to be neutral in the OP. I thought I'd make a thread where people with unbiased opinions can discuss about the iPhone and Captivate.
If you look at the iPhone 4 objectively, with no bias. The device is a beautiful piece of technology in our generation. Despite some flaw like iTunes (grrr), stupid nerd politics and the antenna issue which is a non-issue to us. Were not fat and dont grip the **** out of our phones when we talk.
But anyway, If I offended any nerd here I apologize, kind of. Its really not entirely my fault you are mentally weak and cant handle different views

I Might Bite the Apple Tomorrow

Why i might get an iPhone, it is a lot to read. But please do.
Ive had multiple phones within the past 2 years and the Captivate has treated me well. But I have grown old of the constant reflashing and updating. It all started with my first unlocked phone, the Xpressmusic 5800, then came the N97. I loved the N97 and its design but once again nokia failed and put a horrible processor in their flagship. Also symbian got too clunky for me and was unbearable. then came The Bold 9700 which was great for the first week but within 2 weeks i had moved back to the N97. A week later i got the Touch Pro 2 and fell in love with the keyboard but wasn't fond of the bulkiness. I flashed different roms and it was great but once again it was just way too thick. the Xperia X2 was next of my many phones. the physical keys, optical track pad, and perfect keyboard was one of the best i have ever used. After many months of waiting for a HSPL it never came. the Design was perfect but it was just too slow for my preference.
Then came the Captivate. Ive had this phone for nearly a year which is a feat for me. i got it for 450 the first week it was out and fell is love with the Amoled Screen. The first thing i plashed was bugless beast which got rid of bloatware and allowed me to install non market apps. went through different roms and though i love android its the same old trying to make it better with different roms. here i am using MIUI losing the theming which is fairly close to the iphone
Keep in mind i have a first gen touch and i use it daily in the car, my itouch has been the oldest peice of tech i have used and still works. i never got sick of the itouch and still use it.
My contract has been up a few months after i got the captivate and ive been waiting for something to replace the captivate. i always admired the iphone 4 design but was waiting for maybe the new iphone 5. Just a few days ago they released that the iphone 4 WHITE was going to be released soon, which leads me to believe that the iphone 5 isnt going to be released this year.
I have used every mobile OS and IOS is the only os that i havnt gotten sick of yet.

That's a shame man. The white iPhone is pretty (I'd personally wait for the iPhone 5) but with the way I use my cappy I don't think I could do it. Drag and drop music and videos is something the iPhone will never do, and I use my captivate the most for those two things. On the flipside, you can be more social with an iPhone and it's FaceTime and the fact everyone has one and that sorta thing. Personally, I'm sticking with the cappy, at least until iPhone 6 or Galaxy s3
I honestly would never trade my cappy for an iphone.
I can barely live with the same rom and launcher for more than a few weeks, imagine having an uncustomizable phone.

I have a captivate, and well, love the way I can customize it to suit me. I tried using an iphone 4 for a couple days, but couldn't stick for more than a few hours. I don't say iphone 4 is bad, but its the feeling of "freedom" that I feel with captivate that I can't seem to let go of it. I came to Captivate after using 3GS for about an year.
Anyways, in the end, its all ur personal decision to go from a free land to alcazar prison. All I can say is all the best in ur move. But don't expect to get too far in the waters since all that can be done is jailbreak.
Since u waited this long, why not wait till June? Its just about a month from now, and if there is a new model then u'd be sitting holding ur head.
judging by his history, he doesnt research before he buys, just buys whats cool. He'll get it play with it for a month then come back to the captivate and unlock it for his new contract he'll pick up with the icrap....

What does this have anything to do with south korean mentality? Someone has in their possession something that belongs to samsung that wasn't released to public and they're demanding that person to return it. That's an issue?
Is this any different than what jason chan from gizmodo went through with iphone4 leakage to a lesser extreme?

I saw that too after reading some of the comments from people about it, they also fail to give a source for where they found it at. Although, by the looks of how Nexus Prime is highlighted it may have accidentally been indexed by Google. As Yale just found a few days ago Google is very good at finding stuff it's not supposed to and exposing it for the whole world to see.

Although, by the looks of how Nexus Prime is highlighted it may have accidentally been indexed by Google. As Yale just found a few days ago Google is very good at finding stuff it's not supposed to and exposing it for the whole world to see.

Lack of updates only applies to the US carrier devices as the international version of galaxy s was updated to gingerbread before pretty much anyone else. Also this is a nexus device we're discussing here. No matter who the manufacturer is, update will be released on these devices first
the nexus s, was....meh, samsung pretty much was known to be making it ever since they announced the prime. that pic that was leaked a few months ago (the one with the phone sitting on the fur rug) i could have told you right away that was a sammy.
i'm not a big fan of the sammy's. mainly because without a rubber case or bumper, their phones are VERY VERY VERY VERY easy to drop.

Well Verizon says they aren't getting the SGS2 because thy are already getting another Samsung device and Tmoble, Sprint and ATT are all getting the SGS2 refresh so it would appear to me that Verizon wont be the only carrier to get the Nexus Prime but it seems that Verizon may be the sole carrier for a limited time.

No Nexus device became available in CDMA only model when it launched. Either they are getting a world phone or they are getting it later ala Nexus S 4G
No way Google decides something like this. Bet my head on this

I hope you're right it would just seem odd to release the SGS2 then release the Nexus prime a couple weeks later...
When google first released the nexus s it wasnt directly thru tmobile. You had to go to best buy. I wonder if the nexus prime will be one phone for all carriers, one phone that is open with gsm/ cdma capability and all bands for world use.

I hope that the email is fake lol Samsung's screens are aweful imo they have yellow tints to the whites and their phones always feel cheap. id like it to be made by HTC. Idk how the bid goes on to make the nexus line if its based off of $ it will be hard for another company to get the contract seeing how Samsung has deep pockets...

I have the nexus s and I got to say. It is a lovely phone. I am not happy or disappointed that they are making the next nexus. Personally I thought it would of been Motorola as Google have bought them out now. Or maybe LG was the other speculation. I hope this phone dont have the efs folder like the galaxy s and the nexus s has as that has caused a lot problem with people losing there imei number when flashing roms.

Darker colors aren't the only ones to be excited about. Unlike most typical LCD panels which can't support the whole color gamut, amoled panels typically exceed the color gamut support along with other benefits such as overall thinner panel package and power efficiency difference from lack of backlight usage
oh yeah yellow tint is really bad on these phones right? In real life, my laptop screen looks more yellowish than my phone

What happen when your wife who have an Iphone meet your new Android phone?

Last December my wife asked an Iphone 4S as gift, knowing already the device and the way Apple working I tell her not to go for an Iphone cause it's expensive for the specs and only work in one way, the way Apple want it to work.
The answer was "My friends have an Iphone, it's pretty and they can install many things really amazing!!!" with the same eyes than puss in boots. How can I resist, even if I start being bellyache just by thinking that it's me who'll be in charge to take care of the phone for the setting and all stuff that can be made on the phone.
This month I finally can decide which Android phone i want to buy, a HTC Sensation XE. At the beginning my wife start being jealous with my phone, cause I spent severals hours to flashing and personalize my phone, she didn't want to use my phone, on and on.
Then last week we went to a coffee shop and her Iphone was out of battery. As she like watching Korean drama all the time she couldn't resist asking for my phone. After 5 minutes spent to navigate on the menu and loading heavy website with flash videos and other features she looked at me with the same eyes as before and said "I want an Android phone!", saying "Iphone is too strict, can't do what I want and personalize the phone that much. Since then I no longer can enjoy my phone at a coffee shop. Wtf!!!
So, now if I want to enjoy my phone while she is watching her drama at coffee shop, my only solution is to buy another Android phone...
Just sell her iPhone and get her an Android phone The more android users the better
cool story bro, now do this ^^^
Lol, maybe you can sell the iPhone and buy her a good second hand android device.

mind you for a second hand 4s in mint condition you can do a straight swap for a galaxy note or SGS2. win win situation
you just need to find and apple fanboy which doesn't like his new android phone.
iPhone 4s upgrade
I say wait till the announcement for the iPhone 5 so you can sell it to Gazelle or related site for the most money (or now i suppose depending on how bad you want to wait lol) and buy yourself the latest and greatest...
...now obviously the Galaxy Nexus, otherwise whatever is out this summer :-D
Man, I know exactly how you feel. You know your wife better than she knows herself, you pretty much called it right on the dot that she wasn't going to like her Iphone. Same thing with my girl, I swear she never listens to me and then later on she'll do the exact same I told her she was going to do.
It must be a female gene.

Does a Nexus hit the 7620 at Antutu benchmark? Fot what I saw it doesn't, for my point of view Samsung is only focus on marketing, as same as Iphone. People follow the vibe of what they see the most. Htc never desapointed me, and I had a lot of Samsung on the hands but nothing to be impress by.

lol xD, yeah the older androids are pretty ****teh.

Made an iphone user a believer today.

Have a friend i work with who has a Iphone 5. He hasn't had a Android phone since 2011, which happened to be an Xperia Play . This was basically the phone that gave him his lasting impression of Android. Up until today
We were on break and he saw me using the multi window in conjunction with pen window and goes " what the f*ck. can that do the eye scrolling thing too?" Im like yea. He says " it pauses the video when you look away at it too?" Im like yea. So for the next 10 minutes i showed him action memo, scrapbooker, 4k video, a little Asphalt 8, and S Note. The look on his face after seeing all of this was priceless enough. But then he says "f*ck this ****" and throws his phone (which was in an otterbox) on the ground jokingly. Im not kidding. I say to him "come on man your good with the Iphone 5. i know you want that 5s.) He says "na i need that sh*t in my life."
It has to be one of the most rewarding feelings ever to have that happen lol.
Haha yeah, this is my favorite thing to do. I feel rewarded when I convert people!
Seems like samsungs gimmicky features are almost made for demonstration purposes (whens the last time you used air gesture out of convenience)
The thing that gets iphone users from my experience is the photo sphere, and how you can view them using the gyro.
I remember that in my next demonstration. hehe
hehehe, That because your friend not F IFan.
-Ifan everytime they hold their f phone they all said the best they don't accept world is bigger than they thought.
-I'm an FanDroid, hahaha.

Do you not also attend The Church of Android? Please, feel free to stop by this Sunday. We'll be preaching the good word of Andy Rubin and how he created Android in 7 days.
Cupcake 1:5-
Then Andy Rubin blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Wooo, you fixed someone that was brainwashed by apple It's always a good thing!
They truly are brainwashed.
After my photosphere demo this guy was trying to convince me that his iph5s panorama feature was better and mine was lacking by not having it.
He was speechless when I showed him we have stock panorama as well as photosphere.
Someone needs to make a 'how to convert an iphone believer' article.
Lol. Thats rich
Try not to bring him here, too much useless negativity here will make him rethink :-/
I was able to successfully harvested many souls with my note 2. Not sure what I'm supposed to do with them now, but I guess it's always useful to have some spares......

I have got 4 people at my office to order the note 3 , 2 others to order the S4 and 2 to change over to tmobile, at this point tmobile and Samsung should start paying me a commission
I convinced the guy who sold me my note 3 to get one.
Its always fun to go into a store and spit out more knowledge about the phones in the store than they know about.
He sold his 5 to get a 5s but got the note 3 instead.
Had a similar experience today. Went to find a working Note 3 demo unit at a retail store today. After contently checking out the Note 3 was playing around with iDevices since I was curious how many apps and browser tabs it would take to exhaust the low DRAM they're equipped with and cause memory used by background apps to be cleared thereby forcing a reload upon switching back and losing whatever I was working on. The iPad Mini is particularly bad with only 512MB DRAM where all it took was one browser tab displaying a mobile device review with a lot of comments and Apple maps with 3D enabled where task switching back to the browser caused a reload so if I was in the middle of writing a comment it would've been lost. While testing the same on iPhone 5S another customer wanders over and asks me what I thought of the iPhone 5S (he mentioned he currently owns an iPhone 4 something). While refraining from being critical such as not mentioning the toyish looking iOS 7, copy of Android's drop-down quick-access menu but swipe up and pop-up from bottom instead, non-intuitiveness with double-tapping the home button to task switch when that action is associated with zooming in (Android's long press makes more sense), what I was testing with low DRAM, etc. I merely mentioned that the experience was ok but the screen was too small and that it would be better with a bigger screen. He acknowledged and mentioned he's also looking into the Galaxy S4, I responded by suggesting the kick ass Note 3 but he says he's concerned with getting something too big then I pointed to my front pocket and asked if it looked too big and pulled out the Note 2. Commented that once you go big it's tough to go back. Shortly later I see him with the sales associate in front of the Note 3. Felt I saved a soul.
