I got around $500 bucks to spend.... and in my price range I have 2 options.
Galaxy S2 or the Galaxy Nexus.
I'm not sure which, all i know is my wife who has the Galaxy S2 has a lot of trouble with games, and the Nexus has a powerVR in, slower but more compatible.
S2 or Galaxy Nexus? (i'm not fussed about the 5mp camera on the nexus)
Which is more hackable of the 2 i guess lol or maybe i should wait for the Quad Core Beast from Samsung to drive the prices down a bit more...
If you are willing to get a used phone you have alot more options than just those two phones you mentioned. Look in the marketplace

Depends which S2 your wife has. If she has the T-Mobile one or the AT&T Skyrocket, there's your problem. Those have Snapdragons in them, which suck for gaming. They're not real Galaxy S II's. They're only branded that way to make people buy them. Only the Sprint Epic 4G Touch and the AT&T i777 (Galaxy S II) have the original Exynos chip with the Mali GPU (the one in the real GSII i9100).
If you want a high res display with no microSD slot (16/32GB for GSM/CDMA models respectively) and pure mod-ability, get the Galaxy Nexus. It's pretty good for gaming, but it probably won't handle the next generation of games as well as the GS2. The Galaxy S II has a better GPU and processor, but a lower res screen (which actually means better performance), and 16GB + MicroSD card slot, and a camera that rivals the iPhone 4S's.
They both have great development communities, and all GSII variants are getting ICS officially. (the i9100 already has it). If you want a phone that will 100% get Jelly Bean officially, go for the GNexus.
Gaming/Media-oriented -> Galaxy S II
Pure mod-ability -> Galaxy Nexus
A Galaxy Nexus from Expansys I think is $399, no tax. I know the Google Play store is selling it for the same price, but with tax here in NY that's $450. You should be able to pick up either phone for around $400.
have u considered xperia S?
Go with the galaxy nexus some pure google

The screen isn't that much larger on the nexus as it has the soft buttons which render the screen to be almost the same size as the s2. However, the nexus has a higher pixel density whereas the s2 exceeds in contrast ratios and looks better in my eyes

if u can go out of these two options then maybe htc one x?..or wait for other quad core phones...by sony or samsung(S3)..i think u should go with the latest coz it wont get outdated soon...
Nexus, without any doubt

You can consider also HTC Sentation XL
try out galaxy nexus.
Although the Galaxy Nexus would be the usual choice, I honestly suggest that you check both phones' Specs carefully.
While Nexus's display is quite nice and it is "more famous" than the S2, in terms of processor or camera, there's no reason not to choose the latter.
Also, you should consider the release of ICS and CM9 for the S2.
One things I'll chime in from my personal experience against the "pure modability" aka Nexus- the best experience I've had with my S2 was on the old, stock ATT rom with the clockwork mod recovery in the stock kernel. All the custom roms I've tried, above all, that the WORST battery life.
So while you'll be able to get more, useless modability out of a Nexus, S2 will work like a champ right out of the box without ANY issues.

Is there really any competition with these phones or does one blow away the other hands down?

Well since we have no idea what the official specs of the SGS3 are we can't really say. All we have is rumors, but some of the thing we can be fairly certain about are the exynos quad processor, a 720p screen, an 8-10MP camera,and a screen size ranging from 4.5-4.8". The main difference will be the processor and the screen size. If you want a hybrid phone/tablet the note will be best, if you are looking for pure performance then the S3 will give you the best results. You can't say one will blow the other one out of the water without solid spec sheets and an idea of what you want in the phone.
I am excited for Thursday. I hope that we don't only hear about the SGS3, but maybe some intel on when the TMobile version of the Note will be released.
I am going for the Note. Buying an international version is not an option for me financially, so it rules out these quad-core processors, which are probably not needed right now anyway.
I am still using a TMobile G2, and it does everything I need it to do. It only has 1 core I am sure at like 800 mhz, though I am overclocking it right now due to the fact that it makes it easier to run. Either way, that processor can't be as nice a the Galaxy Note's dual-core 1.5 ghz processor.
Quad cores are just being used in desktop computers really, so it's no surprise that you shouldn't really NEED it for a phone. I don't know the official technicalities to backup my statement, but it seems common sense.
I will look forward to having the GNote specific applications, S pen, and screen real estate. Can't wait!
S3. Only reason to get Note over GS2 is screen/pen. Not worth it imo.

Not a fair competition at all. S3 should be compared to phones of the same calibre, like the HTC One X.
im sure someone will do a competition of these two phones. Even whitout the S3 full specs we all know who will win.
Quadcore is more than necessary for me
One phone!
HTC Evo Lte dual core s4 which is really fast.. It beats tegra 3 in some tests.

i think the SG S3 will be the same as the Note ( pen included ) but with a 4.6 screen
Each have their pluses and minuses. The GS3 will have the latest and greatest hardware and ICS out if the box, but the Note will have the bigger screen and S-Pen.
But seriously you're considering a phone already 6 months old vs a phone that will just be announced tomorrow. I love my Note and it has worked flawlessly for me, but I know after tomorrow it won't be the best hardware wise compared to the GS3. But that doesn't mean the Note is a slouch at all. The good thing though is I have my work phone with Sprint and my upgrade is June 30, so I may pick up the GS3, so best of both worlds!

The S3 will most likely have a 4.8 screen
..Can't wait for SIII
IiI can relate to the question I have a gsii and I really lobe the note. I will wait to deer what the new galaxy offers this weekend. I live near the brand new Samsung shop in Westfield next to the Olympic site and they reckon that the should have demo models this Saturday following the event tonight.
I only wish there were a gnote2 being announced. I love the idea of stylus
and big screen.
I have high expectations for GS3. Let's see what they have to offer for us today.
Anyway, I like my GS2 better than Galaxy Note already, so it seams clear to me that GS3 will also be better.
hummm, i like Galaxy S III better.
How do you like HUA WEI Ascend P1
BTW, I'm still waiting for media pad 10 fhd of HUA WEI
There will be quite a big difference according to the specs!
Well we will see at 7pm today
The SGS3 will be more popular than the Note, because the SGS3 is the direct concurrention of the HTC One X, iPhone etcetera.
If a phone gets really popular, you get extra things from the producer, like firmware upgrades etcetera.
Pick SGS3 after 7pm.
PS it is being expected the SGS3 will arive at the stores in approx 7 days
hahaha note vs a quadcore baby doesnt stand a chance find out today at 7:00pm GMT London time
according to leaked specs the s3 will have a 12mp camera a 4412 quadcore processor clocked at 1.5ghz
a mali 400(same as in the s2 just clocked much higher)
a 4.8 inch 720p HD regular RGB matrix not pentile
wireless charging (big maybe wuold be cool but unlikely)
2mp front cam
touchwiz bullcrap on android 4.0.4
a ceramic back

WAIT PATIENTLY !!!!!!!!!!!!! WHO IS GONNA DO THAT I WANT MY SIII NOW
Hey guys,
At the moment I'm using a Motorola Milestone 2 (mainly for its hardware keyboard) but the phone is sluggish and freezes quite often.
I tried nearly all available ROMs but none could give me the experience I wanted.
So I am currently searching a new phone (in Germany) under the following conditions:
max. screen size 4.3"
300€ budget (± a few bucks)
My biggest problem ist the screen size. I don't want a flagship with 4.7 inch and above. Thats just too much imho.
I use my phone mainly for calling, mailing, surfing and as an organizer.
I want a smooth user experience, even with lots of mails/messages.
Gaming would be nice but I don't nee GTA 3 running on my system.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 mini fits quite good but gets torn to pieces by the community.
Is it really such a bad decision for 260 - 280€?
I can't find a real alternative at the moment.
Thanks in advance for any help!
There is also the Razr I with a 4.3" screen but a small bezel so overall its still a small device. It just got the Jelly Bean 4.1 upgrade. It has better specs than the S3 Mini but I'm not sure what price they would be in Germany.
look into sony's xperia line ...
go for s2...gr8 dev support
@spunker88:
Has Mototola a better device support for the RAZR I (Prize in Germany is around 350€)?
Because normally I would'nt go back to Motorola because of their crappy updates/support.
@OMGWTFBBQRETARD:
I've seen the Xperia phones but I don't really know if the design is my thing.
But I will give it a look
@nmgavinash:
The Problem with the SGS2 is, that it still costs more than 300€ and there is no good availability here.
If I consider to pay more than 300€ I will go for the SGS2!
galaxy s plus....1.5 ghz....500mb of ram...android 4.2.1...=)
@biagio7xD:
But isn't the S3 mini with its dual core CPU faster as the Galaxy S plus?
Samsung Galaxy S II plus
Maybe the sumsung i9300 is ok. I love it very much.
Galaxy S2.
S2 Plus is unnecessary, because there are not important difference btw S2 and S2 Plus.

@Emery1617:
The i9300 is an awesome phone, but like I said it's too big imo.
Second point is, thats it's too expensive (300€ budget).
@karamatik:
Like is said to biagio7xD, isn't the S3 mini faster than the SGS plus?
It's even 20€ cheaper than the SGS plus.
@dj_tallboy:
I think my best option is to pay around 330€ and go for the SGS2.
Thanks so far for all the input!
I just saw the HTC Desire X.
What about this one? Some negative points?
Got a 1Ghz Dual-Core, 768MB RAM and a 4" display.
Looks nice to me and it's just 220€
HTC Desire X ist the best phone for that price.
230 Euro !
Absolutely Samsung Galaxy S2, great device, good support, you should take it
I'm with Koodo carrier and I'm not satisfied with my Samsung Galaxy Ace IIx. Here is what they offer, for a replacement (which I can afford) for now (price is in canadian money): Moto G (150$), HTC Desire 601 (300$), Nexus 4 16go (300$), Samsung Galaxy S III (300$), Galaxy S4 mini (300$). I like the Moto G, for its price, but it lack support for microsd card and it's a bummer. If I want something with microsd support, I need to buy something like HTC Desire or Galaxy S3. I also want to be able to install CyanogenMOD so I think the Galaxy S3 would be a good choice. What do you think? I could get an HTC Desire 601 for the same price, but information about custom rom support is sparse.

The S III beats the S4 mini in almost everything except ram since it has 512mb more which makes a difference. All in all I would go for a Nexus 4 out of all of them. For one it has a better display than all of them(318ppi). It also has a quad core proccessor and 2gb of ram. Down side it again the storage. 8gb internal memory so if memory would be an issue then I would look into something else. Nexus 4 also gets android updates first since it is a google device. So you are going to have to trade in the power and perks of the nexus 4 if you want more storage. If you want everything balanced out then a S III would be the way to go.

I'd love to have the Nexus 4 but does it have support for microsd?
Once again your going to have to trade off. Nexus 4 downside is no SD slot. So if you want storage your best bet is the SIII. But then you lose 1gb of ram which is quite Alot and the processor of the Nexus is pretty good. S4 mini you lose half of the ram you do with the SIII but also two cores.

Personally, I'd go with the S4 & I'd be wary about buying an S3 this late in the game. I've had the S3 since the week it came out in the states and I'm just about to upgrade myself.

It's an S4 Mini, only has a dual core proccessor and the battery life on an s3 is better with 4 cores.
I just bought the S3 yesterday, for someone like me who always had cheap cellphone (my first smartphone was a first gen Galaxy Ace), I can tell you it's a beast compared to what I used in the past. Also, I had to choose something which I can afford, the S4 wasn't affordable for me.
What do people think of the Moto g that are coming from a galaxy s3?
(my s3 is the dual core, Canadian version)
I'm not sure whether to give my mom my s3, or buy her a brand new Moto g.

I had the s3 and I like my g better than the s3.
Battery life is so much better on the moto g. It blows the s3 away! Only downside is the non removable battery but with the great battery life I've been getting I don't mind it. Moto g also runs a whole lot better than the s3 mainly due to being stock android.
This is from me using the dual core us model s3(with LTE) I don't know about the quad core model.

I have an S3. My wife has got the Moto G. In my opinion there is a lot less difference than there ought to be considering the price differential. If my S3 broke I would probably buy a Moto because I couldn't justify paying a lot more to get only a little extra. I would miss the larger screen but very little else and even then the difference isn't enough to be a dealbreaker IMO. The only other things that I can see might be a dealbreaker to some is the lack of expandable memory and non replaceable battery.
Thank you for the replies, and I forgot to mention in my initial post that my s3 is the dual core canadian version!
Impressive that this phone can go toe-to-toe (specs and user experience at least) with a phonr that unlocked can costa you more than 300 dollars, while the moto g goes for 200 dollar...
