Hi guys. I have been using a 2 year old blackberry and finally picked up a charge yesterday. I was in the boat hoping that we would see a bionic sometime soon but that has yet to transpire and I was in need of a new phone ASAP. That being said I am semi-happy with the charge. The bloatware is rediculous and I find the phone to be less then responsive as I want it to be. On the data saide its amazing, I average 28 down and 6 up so im happy there but want the phones IO to be more responsive. My dilemma is I know it needs rooted to remove all the bloatware and speed it up but I have 30 days to return it under my business account. Im afrais rooting it will not allow me to return it. The only reason I would return it is if something better comes out in the next 30 days which is a definate possibility.
I have done significant reading on here and I think it may be possible to do a stock backup and then root so i could revert to stock if needbe. However I have never rooted a phone and have allot of concern that they may be able to tell it was rooted and not take it back if I decide to return it.
Im looking for input as to what you would do if you were in my shoes. Like I said Im new to rooting so any basic info would be much appreciated.
Im getting my Charge today also, im hoping that this thing is as easy as the Galaxy S phones for Roms, Kernels and such, rooting is pretty easy with samsung devices, dont let using odin be a put off, its super simple and just make sure you follow what these guys tell you to do, im also looking forward to see what IMNUTS does with this phone, hey if you dont like it on the 29th day go back to stock and take it back, i know the LG Reveloution will be released in 2 days, but i dont know if its any better than this
one thing i wouldnt recommend is a Thunderbolt if your a business user and use your phone a lot like i do, id be luck to get 2 hours out of the phone, i had to carry 3 batteries at all times, my cell phone was almost always plugged in

You don't have to root to "hide" the bloat. Just install an alternative Launcher like ADW or Launcher Pro

When you say hide do you mean hide as in they will no longer eat up all the system resources? Really the only reason I am considering root is to speed up the phone by freeing up some resources.

Not correct. This will give you a new launcher, but nothing else. TouchWiz launcher will even still load unless you root and freeze/remove it (though you should have some other launcher in /system first, so don't fool around with this lightly).
OP: flashing the stock stuff back from an Odin package is pretty straightforward.
Where is the setting in ADW to hide apps? I know it's in Launcher Pro, but last time I played with ADW I couldn't find it (just the option to create groups in addition to the default "all")
I'm currently looking for a new Android phone, bouncing between Samsung SGS2 and the Atrix2.
Having a few questions about the A2.
1. After searching/reading, it looks like the A2 can be rooted for full access. So what is the advantage of unlock the bootloader? What is it good for?
2. Can we install a custom ROM on the A2, for example, a CM7 ROM (I don't even know that CM7 team actually has the ROM for this device or not, but they seem to have one for SGS2)?
Thanks all
Answers to your questions:
1. The advantage of unlocking the bootloader is that you gain the ability to flash ROM images and update.zip's (which can include many different mods). It does this by giving you the ability to load a custom recovery which is used to flash ROM's and updates, backup and restore your entire file system, clear the file system, and tons of other functionality depending on the custom recovery available for the phone.
2. Right now the A2 does not have an unlocked bootloader and there have been no ROM's made for it yet. If flashing is priority one, you might want to go with an SGSII since it has everything you need NOW. If you are patient, you can go with the A2 and wait for the blessings to come.
Clear!
Big thank for your quick reply lilhaiti.
So, up to now, after rooting, can we install different launcher (if not wanting the default GUI by Motorola, is it called Blur or something?)

you can install different launchers without rooting.....go to the market and install one....
I'm a big fan of Go Launcher EX. That stock Moto launcher is not very impressive.

Good to know, thanks ghost.
Just need a clarification, I am a B&N NC owner, by default B&N stock ROM has limited the apps and that's the reason why we root it to gain full access on the Android Market. Is the same theory applied for the A2?
Other meaning, what will I miss if I don't root the A2?

The NC isn't even in the same class of devices. You have access to most of the market on a phone. If you have to ask what the benefit is of rooting, then you don't need it. Most all the bloatware is user uninstallable out of the box.

Oh, so why do need to root? What's the benefit of it if we can fully access to Android Market for apps and bloatwares can be uninstalled right out the box?
Thanks again.
Did they change something with the bootloader? On the backflip, noone ever touched the bootloader. it's always been locked/fastboot disabled. Yet it has several roms and recoveries?

root gives us access to the /system and to functions and features that are previously hidden from stock usage.
like i said, if you have to ask, WHY we would want/need root, then you dont need it. nothing mean, just that so many people go off thinking they have to root like its going to open up a magical door and make the phone self-aware. its just giving you access to stuff you normally dont have access to. this is good for people that know what they are doing, and bad for people that have no clue what root means.

while this may be true, we dont have any recoveries available yet. there are ways around a bootloader, but we have not gotten to that point yet. the phone is too new, and not enough dev support yet. i am working on a rom, and can make it a pseudo-rom like we had on the OG Atrix, but we need a way to get back to stock in case of a mishap first....
Thanks again, ghost.
I've been ripping my NC apart but I tend not to mess around with the phone.
Actually PG, not everyone is aware of the pennies and apps that open up with a root. I am sure almost everyone can benefit from more apps

Unfortunatly Go Launcher has a problem with notifications of Gmail (which I knew when I loaded it). That's not an issue I don't use Gmail
However I do use my alarms and it appears it stops almost all, if not all, notifications. I love the menus and how it works but I'm doing a factory reset. If we had not used a second alarm this morning my wife might have beat me to death with the Atrix 2 this morning.
I still have not rooted the phone so no titanium backup, it's downloading time
I have never seen go launcher remove notifications. Sounds like you got something else going on.

I reset the phone, loaded all the apps I wanted to keep and then put Go Launcher EX back on. Problem solved
I'm thinking that during my slew of loading and trying out apps, like a kid in a candy store, I loaded a data manager that allowed me to set kills on apps. I believe in my zeal I set the alarm to be shut down 2 min after the phone gets sleepy.
Thanks again guys, I really like go launcher and now have go manager too
Life after Rooting....
Just now took the plunge and rooted by new TF700 infinity.. Got Super User's Rights.. Loaded Root Checker and Titanium Backup. So, what bloatware is safe to delete? I know some apps/programs are tied to the ROM, like My Library and a few other apps that are "Red Flagged" by Titanium Backup, which makes me pause before trying to delete them. What bloatware/apps are safe to remove? Are there any tweaks that I can do to a "Rooted Only" table to increase performance or help extend battery life Or do I have to unlocked to realize any real/significant difference in performance??
Thanking you beforehand for your patience and advice to a newbie :fingers-crossed:

Trouble with the stock rom is - if you want to get future Asus updates to this tablet, you have to have a lot of the bloat installed before you update, or it will fail.
My advice: Do not uninstall anything with TiBu without making a backup first. Keep this backup in a safe place so that you can restore it before a system update.
Yes, the red entries are system apps - proceed with caution. I believe TiBu flags anything red if installed in \system. However, My Library and other Asus apps are were installed in \system instead of \data (where your other apps live) so that you, the user cannot uninstall them. They should be safe to remove.
My strategy would be to a) backup anything you want to get rid of, then b) freeze it for a few days and see if it has unintended consequences, then c) uninstall
To improve your browser you can implement Browser 2RAM. If you are on 4.2 B2R doesn't work as an app anymore. It has to run as a script, which is a little more involved to implement.

So, I'm guessing that there are no apparent advantages to a Root Only tablet. Unlocking is the only way to go. May as well leave it As Is unless you're going to go all the way....
Well you can freeze apps, uninstall apps, move frequent apps to the systems folder. All this can be done, and at least the good part is if you remove apps you might reduce some ram usage and might not lag as bad.
Also you can install Greenify, which you can tell certain apps to not run in the background unless you have it open. Again saves ran usage.
Really the best thing to do is unlock the boot loader and run over to cromi-x of cwm.

I actually read about Greenify a while ago but forgot about it. This served as a great reminder to read a little more, and maybe try it out. A sincere thanks goes out to you, Deathman20...
PS: Especially handy on our phones, since the 700 has that handy double battery. Today my wife's 'new' phone is coming, a Samsung Galaxy S3. LOL! We're falling behind in the phone department.
EDIT/PPS: Not to hijack the thread, but I stumbled onto the Xposed framework again, too. Life has been good today so far!

INTERESTING! Had never heard about Xposed Framework, but information on it and especially the mods seems to be scattered among several device forums.
This is very tempting for users who do not want to unlock the bootloader.
Now, only question is: Can you safely try this on the TF700?? Have you?
I am sorely tempted to try this on my old Droid 4. There's no really good custom rom out there for it (they all seem to break some crucial function). I'm getting a used D4 today which I bought on eBay to replace my phone (speaker croaked 6 weeks after warranty expired). Now if I had the time...

Actually, if you haven't unlocked yet and want to enjoy at least some of the advantages, try SD Booster. It's free in the Play Store and implements some tweaks sbdags also used in CROMi-X.
I tried it on my old, tired Droid1 and boy! This is a usable device again! Impressive!
Set the cache size to 4096 for the TF700. That's what sbdags set it to in CROMi-X.
If you try it, please report back. I'm very curious to hear how it works on a locked, rooted stock rom. I know of only one user who did this and he loves it! Says his TF700 on stock is now faster than his Nexus 7.

Even thought I'm new to tablets (this is my first one), I build my on boxes (the latest - Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz LGA 1150 on the Gigabyte mb, GA-Z87X-UD5H LGA 1150) I haven't built up the nerves to unlock a 8 month old tablet. For fear that I will (1) screw something up and brick it or (2) it goes bad and I'm while I'm still under warranty. Again, I gather from everyone that by "Rooting" you're not getting any real significant advantages other than the ability to delete or freeze some apps.
chew1992, after the warranty period I may go for the unlock especially since this may end up being a hand me down to the wife if I decide to get the new Asus tablet in the Q4.
Think I will take berndblb suggestion and try the SD Booster.....Thomas

It might be nerve racking but after unlocking my first phone.. doing it has been so much easier on each device that I've gotten. Just take your time, read though many posts and give yourself a good 1-2 hours the first time you do it, alone, quiet not to be distracted and you'll be happy you did.
Though even now that its rooted you can do many things that you couldn't before. Customization, tweaks, etc. Case in point, I have a phone, that while yes I can load custom roms, its only via a bootloader program so its never officially flashed to a new rom per say. So technically on it I only have a rooted phone, but I can and have tweaked the phone to be faster. It takes longer to do this instead of doing it via a custom rom like Cromi-X or CWM but it can be done. The Rom's tweak many aspects and is updated pretty regularly with subtle changes that can improve performance. So yes really you don't need to unlock the bootloader but... to get much needed performance out of it then yes I would unlock it. Me personally, I unlocked it within 6 hours of having the tablet.
As yourself, I'm an avid PC Builder/Overclocker. I build PC's for myself and close friends/family. This would be more the equivalent to tweaking windows vs building a PC if you need a comparison.
So my battery is draining at a ridiculous rate. Google services are using 34% of my battery. I'm running completely stock GS3 on verizon now with 4.3. I've been doing some research, I'm thinking I need to root to debloat and get some battery increases. I think i can do the root easily enough, but installing roms and safestrap seem a tad daunting to me. So would I be best off to root and install a rom? And would anyone be willing to help me out?

Before you go overboard if you haven't already you should boot into recovery and do a factory reset. If you took the update over the air that would explain a lot. for some reason the ota changed settings and was just overall poorly executed. If a factory reset doesn't help download the 4.3 Odin file from this website and see if that helps. I say this website and not from a place like Samsung-updates because most of there files will not wipe the phone so problems tend to stick around.
Thread cleaned to remove warez reference. Be careful what you suggest and make sure it is properly done.
There are other, proper ways to get Rom Toolbox that don't involve using a third party app.

concerning that last part, i would read very carefully before attempting to install a custom rom on 4.3. i've seen a lot of people brick their phones because they failed to read up on it. Best place to start is rooting, then after that (if you still want to install a custom rom) go to the safestrap thread and read up on it.
Been reading up on it a bit. I enabled developer options and checked close apps when exiting i think. And my battery life was improved a lot. I still want to do root i think so i can freeze some bloatware at least.

Be careful on what you freeze. Most of the bloat is just a eye sore in the app draw. Touchwiz roms have a lot of layers depending on other layers to work properly and if you freeze the wrong thing your phone might get worse battery and be very buggy. There is a master list of what you can safely freeze somewhere on the forum.
So now a couple days later my battery is back to pitiful life and wont fully charge over night, draining to near nothing in half hour or so. Going to try a factory reset and see what happens...

I originally used the Dirty Santa routine on my Verizon VS995, so it remained on VS99513A for a couple of years. Had all manner of issues over time - apps "failing to respond", YouTube not displaying video but rather black screens, green-screen crashes, etc. Finally had enough and used the LGUP process to return to stock and unroot, of course. I probably (assuming, anyway) could have gone right to the latest Oreo firmware with LGUP, but decided to go to the stock version of VS99513A and then just do the many system updates to get current.
It's now happily sitting on Oreo, and knock on wood it's like having a new phone! It's so much smoother, YouTube is working, lol, battery life is an order of magnitude better and it's working like a phone should work. No one knows the future, of course, but today, I'm happy.
Just passing this along, but I've gone from being ready to trash this thing to being able to enjoy it again without worrying about having to dump some $$$ into something else.
I had originally rooted to get around the Verizon mobile-hotspot check, but I have an unlimited plan that includes it anyway, now, so that's no longer an issue.
Possible placebo effect...
A clean stock unrooted firmware may run smoother than a few custom roms, but not smoother than a rooted version of the exact same rom.
I wouldn't give up on root, even if the best ever unrootable phone was given to me for free (Ad-blocking being the primary reason)

Blokada DNS changer. Also working without root. All problems gone. :good: for me the main reason for root is to prevent screen retention. The sucked soooo hart. If there would be an option without root I would also go with an unrooted stock fw.

Possible placebo effect...
A clean stock unrooted firmware may run smoother than a few custom roms, but not smoother than a rooted version of the exact same rom.
I wouldn't give up on root, even if the best ever unrootable phone was given to me for free (Ad-blocking being the primary reason)

It's not even a close comparison in my case. Admittedly I'm on Oreo now and not the original Nougat the phone came with (and was rooted with), but it's literally a night and day difference. It wasn't just performance - it was extreme instability, apps that wouldn't work or would constantly go into "not responding" mode, green screens, battery life that was awful to the point where it nearly always needed to be connected to a charger, etc. I'd tap on an app or a function in an app before, and I'd literally have to wait and wait for something to happen at times.
Now? Lightning fast and smooth operation, stability where there was none before, etc. And, as stated, for what I really needed root before (bypassing vendor check for mobile hotspot), it's no longer an issue due to the phone plan I'm on.
I'm not knocking rooting, so don't misunderstand. But for my experience with this phone, going back to stock where I could actually update the version of the OS, as well, has made all the difference in the world for my user experience. YMMV.
Interesting... I haven't tried stock Oreo yet but in every time I flash a new stock rom the phone runs great for 6 months then starts lagging.
oooh meee TOOO! me! meeeee!

Between the GIGANTIC pain in the ass that it was to root this phone (I have a VS995 rooted and on 13a ever since) and all the problems that rooting has caused I'd be ready to undo it all anyway. But due to some problem with internal storage* that started a couple weeks ago, I was fed-up and factory reset the phone. When it boots normally, a check in "about" shows the software status as "modified" but root checker says its not rooted, superSU can't find root (I installed it from play store).. Tried to update via the "system updates" in settings (could not get it to show developer options either).
* The storage issue: I have 50 gigs internal (or something similar) and I get a message that the storage is full and some apps may not work. Not possible, but I humored it and uninstalled everything, cleared cache, downloads cleared, etc ... still showing +/-1 gb free space avail. Factory reset, appears stock, but free space STILL less than 1 GB.
Regretted rooting this phone almost immediately since I still couldn't get rid of certain apps, I had to deal with the camera issues, etc... The only thing positive about it was that my work was unable to install their MDM crap (Mobile Iron shielding Gsuite etc). But anyway, it doesn't look like I'll be able to update the system - I tried it and now it boots to twrp, or boots regularly and then loops around to twrp again. I'm looking for the easiest way to get the phone working (with the persistent problem of internalstorage being full for no reason fixed) and at least reasonably updated. Don't care if it's rooted or not really.
Do you or does anyone have a link to a "play by play" for whatever might work? Its been too long since I rooted it for me to remember the nuances of the procedure so its safe to say that I don't really understand how Android works all that well, so instructions like, "flash xxx 3.2 then flash back to 2 then fastboot and load yer ROM but don't forget the dalvik blah blah" won't work... I'm looking for the idiot's version with hand-holding and everything.
Interesting analysis................ I mainly rooted my older phones due to the need for the mobile hotspot without paying VZ extra charges. However, now that I have the VS995, I was able to download and use the Foxfi app (I paid for the Pro upgrade license) so this left me thinking, do I really need to root my V20 at all? In the past, you couldn't run apps that ran many WIFI tools and other tech'y things, but it seems much of that has changed. I don't run custom ROMs so maybe I don't need to root. Would be glad to hear rebuttals on the subject
I received a new VS995 last week and I flash h910 to get FM radio. I could not be happier as I'm on OREO and the device is working perfectly without any issue whatsoever and with latest mk2000 kernel (2.2 beta) general interface performance is working very well - as it should. Hotspot needed a little workaround bit it wasn't too difficult. I wouldn't dream of going back to stock!

I know it's not straight to bootloader unlock and root this phone but it's worth the trouble. I hope my new fone will last and last untill manufactures change mind about removable batter and horrible new aspect ratio! No thanks V30 !
You're right.
There's no good reason to root the v20. Even rooted you can't do things that other phones can do, like enabling monitor mode on the Wi-Fi. Nor have I been able to get an external Wi-Fi adapter to work on it.

YOU ARE WRONG.
AD BLOCK Yeah they have rootless ad block but they work like ****
screen burn fixes. hows the ghosting?
titanium backup still best option for absolutely all apps getting backed up.
Sorry i have run root too long i cant live without it anymore.
is this happening to just verizon version of LG V20? anyone?
